I somewhat remember this bar this past weekend. I was with my pissy friend who pouted in the corner over some imagined slight all night. This bar made it easy to ignore her BS. Service was prompt and the patrons were cool. I think I drank some beer here. I got smashed to deal with my idiot friend. Now if I could only remember the bar that was south and around the corner from this place because I really liked the band that played there. The Saloon is an unassuming little bar that has standing room only. There's a tiny table tucked away in a nook but that's it - no bar stools. I actually liked this because having to stand made it feel more casual and lively. The crowd was fun and the vibe was very easy-going - perfect for a beach town bar. Drinks were good, even though I got a maraschino cherry in my old fashioned...I can forgive them because it was still good nonetheless. We saw people get shots of some kind of dark liquor topped with coffee, and found out that this is the po po shot. I was a little hesitant but we decided to go for it. It tastes like sweet coffee and goes down like a charm; I can easily see how these shots can be dangerous ; ) I've also heard good things about their pineapple-infused vodka but didn't try it myself. Came here last Saturday to get a drink while waiting for my table at nicks.. loved the vibe, dim lighting, traditional/nostalgic looking old school saloon. Hadn't been home for the holidays in like 4 years and told my gf "let's go to Laguna" for dinner. While looking for a place to grab dinner, we walked by this place and I said "we're coming here after". I was attracted by exactly what it looked like...a saloon, like I should have tied my horse up to the front before moseying up to the bar. My friend ordered the infamous Pine-O after being sold on it by a woman who was standing next to us at the bar. Oh, and yes, it's standing room only. I loved that. I ordered a snifter of B & B. I had been craving B & B for like weeks. My gf loved the Pine-O, simply describing it as "refreshing". It looked and smelled so. We were having a great time with our new friend and her FWB and their friend. So why only 3 stars? The bartender wasn't the most welcoming individual. People who work in restaurants forget or quite possibly have no clue that they are members of the hospitality sector. Their job is to make guests feel welcome, give them great service, a reason to return, and on top of that do it with a friendly, engaging attitude, and some fucking personality wouldn't hurt as well. If you don't have the people skills, you have no business being behind a bar. Having said that, I didn't let our not-so-friendly barkeep ruin our fun. I made up his backstory that could have quite possibly been true. I would come back here but not necessarily on a potentially packed night needing a doorman like I read about in other reviews. Bobby and Michael know how to take care of their customers and when they aren't around Erin and the other Michael hold down the fort pretty good. Their pineapple infused vodka is tasty as is their famous coffee shot. I also like to come by on a Friday evening and sip some Tia Maria. The atmosphere is just like Cheers! There are two distinct crowds there - the silver lined before 8 variety and the younger generation that arrives between 8-9pm. Its a standup bar. There are a few chairs to sit in but its 90% standing only. There are a couple of TVs usually showing sports. Alcohol is present in a wide variety. Came here for a before dinner drink of some simple old fashions that was simply great. Old fashions I've had in the past tend to have a slight burning of the throat when you drink them, but the ones that was ordered by a friend was just perfect with a nice smooth refreshing edge to it that you can sip a couple and it doesn't make you pause to let your throat clear from the whiskey. Right next door to Nick's Laguna Beach, this place is pretty popular as it always full when I walk in. There is the bar front and center where patrons can walk right up and order drinks from, but also a few seating benches as well inside the Saloon. My favorite are two specific spots: 1) the small table seated right by the front window where there are only 2 chairs and a wonderful view of the passerbyers walking to and from wherever they need to go down PCH and 2) the bay window benches where it's perfect to just sit and chat with friends and also to watch foot traffic of people walking down PCH. Dimly lit but just the right amount of light to produce a nice intimate environment for guests to grab a quick drink and then head off to dinner, or for post dinner drinks as well! read more

You know I've tired. I get what it is, it's a minimalistic old style saloon. At night there aren't even seats at the bar, no big deal, I like the vibe. It's situated in a cool area, Great for a night cap and a place to drink while you wait for a table at the local restaurants. I live up the street and so I've walked into here a few times. The woman with the Irish accent (I think Irish) who bartends at times is a sweetheart but the past few times I've gone it's been a huskier bald man and because of his attitude and rude behavior I won't ever be back. I don't know who hired this buffoon but honestly he's a dick. My last encounter here went like this: My family decided to visit, they wanted to go to Nicks for food. The wait was an hour and so we decided to head next door for a drink. We walk in, the place is dead. Just a couple standing at the bar with the bartender and us. We aren't greeted, we aren't acknowledged. My parents take a seat at the table and I walk up to the bar. I stand there...and stand there and stand there while the bartender throws me an irritated look and then continues his conversation with the couple about his depression and how he has been on this medication and that medication. Still nothing so I finally and awkwardly say, "hey bud can I get a beer?" Man if looks could kill. I got a nice eye roll thrown in too. He came over, didn't say a word, and handed me my beer. I ordered another for my mom and an old fashioned for my dad. Didn't ask what kind of whiskey I wanted, just appeared pissed off that I was even in his bar giving him patronage. I pay and say thank you... not a word, he just walked back to the couple and started up his conversation again. If this was the first and only time, I could have gotten over it, this was the THIRD time I've experienced this rudeass and you know how the saying goes.. fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, but fool me three times etc etc. Not sure who the owner is, but this man is a problem. And if he's the owner, well sir perhaps owning a bar isn't the best job for you... especially with your depression issues. Either way it's not my problem because you lost a local customer. The saloon is a bar. Just a bar. Really, it's just. a. bar. No barstools or much seating to speak of, but lots and lots of drinks to order. The pine-o drink with the pineapple infused vodka is the drink to get. I know how it sounds. I thought it sounded ridiculous and collegey and too sweet too, but it was surprisingly refreshing. The service is good ol' fashioned bar service, and the big windows make for some great day drinking. But a couple more seats would make me more a fan of this bar for sure. read more

Hole-in-the-wall bars a mystery to me. I mean, I know they exist and all, but they're sort of like a unicorn. Or maybe a kumquat. You've heard about them, and maybe seen a picture or two of them, but never experienced them directly. One night of bar hopping not TOO long ago, and sobriety being a near recent memory, my friends and I made our way into this place. Kick ass. It's a mans bar. They can do the foo foo drinks, but this is a place who's image exudes that sort of macho machismo, and where the bartenders look that they'll go as sweet in terms of a drink as a whiskey sour for your girlfriend. The problem with the place, which is actually one of it's greatest benefits, is that it's small. However the ambiance of the place, plus it's location near EVERYTHING in Laguna is what makes it ganz toll. read more

Extremely rude service. Some girlfriends and I came in for a drink and the older white male turned down my California ID, saying it's fake and laughing in my face about it. I asked him to explain how it's fake. And he didn't give a clear answer but was very sure of it. It's one of the new CA IDs and they do look a little different but he continued to crack jokes at me with the other people at the bar. It is absolutely a real ID that I have never had problems with. The bearded bartender tonight treated me extremely unprofessionally with his "regulars," making it an extremely unsatisfactory and uncomfortable and extremely sexist experience with me and my two girflfriends. Our server at Tommy Bahamas told us about this lil spot~ she told us about the local secret shot called the "po po" they won't tell u what's in it~ but it's a shot of something that gives u a warm burn in ur chest, and the shot is topped off with coffee~ AMAZING!!! I spent last Saturday evening in Laguna Beach with some of my closest friends. After having dinner at K'ya Bistro Bar, we took a stroll down PCH and arrived at The Saloon - it's only a few blocks away. It's a really tiny place. If I had to guess, it's about 50 feet long and about 20 feet wide. Picture a rectangle with a bathroom attached at the end. Naturally the bar takes up a HUGE portion of the space. It has one small table and some booth seating in the two back corners. The only lighting you get is from the bar area so it's pretty dim. Even though this place is tiny, it never really gets packed (this wasn't my first time here). It doesn't attract the party animals in Laguna. Instead, you get the crowd that wants a slightly mellow night but with all the benefits of a hip bar. The bouncers and bartenders are really friendly. They don't bully you around or make you wait forever for your drink. It's the kind of place you want to go to if you're looking to get buzzed or drunk at a low key spot. They usually have some kind of "special" drink. I didn't pay attention to what they were pouring that night. They have a full bar and I only order Ginny T's (gin and tonic). One cool thing about The Saloon is that they make their own pineapple infused vodka. You can see it behind the bar in this large glass dispenser. The pineapples are laid neatly inside the container bathing in Russian vodka. Even though I didn't try it, some of my friends enjoyed shots of it. They said it was really smooth. WHO THE F TAKES SHOTS OF VODKA? Anyway, if they say it's good, I'll take their word for it instead of trying to find out myself. I've always been a fan of this place. If you don't mind getting drunk while standing, check this place out. Grab a few drinks and if you're not feeling it, you can take off and walk to another nearby bar to cap off your night. read more

This quaint saloon is reminiscent of another era, not just reminiscent, I think the building is historic. Be sure to look at the courtyard and rest of the little building, it's very cool. Wish I'd asked about the history. The saloon has very good drink prices. The pineapple infused vodka cocktail was $6. I had to ask the price again to clarify that is was that low! I was very impressed with the saloon. I don't typically go out in Laguna, I usually stay in Newport but this Friday I went out with a friend who loves the scene in Laguna beach. She told me we were startingoff at the saloon and I pictured a trashy place out of Texas in the 1930s. I couldn't have been more wrong. This little gem was classy and fun! We walked in and met up with a few guys who had been drinking there for an hour or two. We didn't have to wait to get in or to order. I wasn't drinking but I caught a glimpse of my friends shots and the bartenders were very generous with their pours. The whole vibe of the saloon screams "I'm classy and I just want to mingle with my classy friends". But not in a pretencious or snobby way. I would totally come back to this spot!
