We frequent the lobby bar and it used to be one of my favorite places to go on the weekend. The property is beautiful. However, the service here has been always slow. I usually overlook it as the overall experience had been acceptable and I liked the view. Unfortunately, this may be my last time here. We had a waitress, Paige, who was horrible. There was practically no service. We had to walk over each time to ask for snacks and even had to walk to the bar to pay our bill since she never collected the check and was no where to be found. The worst part of the experience is we mentioned our request to close out our tab to a manager (after 25 minutes of waiting for the waitress to come by and collect our card) -- he was unfortunately just as aloof and just said "ok we will close out" and walked away, without addressing the issue at hand. The ritz and monarch has been much superior in overall service. You should take your business to the other resorts nearby instead of this place. read more

They had a wonderful pianist who takes requests and plays a large variation of songs beautifully. In the lounge, you can just have drinks or light bites or just work there as a guest. The lobby at the Montage is a rare case of an establishment where you can casually walk in, seat yourself, and enjoy a couple drinks, yet the ambiance, service, and cocktails are all top notch, in a classy-yet-casual sort of way. When we visited, there was a live music performer that regaled us with pleasant lounge music. Just the right volume to provide a sweet backdrop and still allow for conversation at a comfortable volume. Our servers were attentive to the extreme, and the little cup of nuts and olives that they bring you is such a small gesture, but it really makes you feel special. Out of their wide array of options on their drink menu, we were feeling cocktails. Now, I am no connoisseur of mixology, but the bartenders at the Montage clearly know their stuff. I had a Last Word and a Sidecar, and both were simply perfect, with a charming presentation to boot. However, I must admit my priorities do not lie in drinks, but in food, and when I heard that the chocolate molten cake was to die for, I just could not leave without trying it. The chocolate was decadent, and the melted chocolate was just begging to burst through its soft cake prison. Flanked by an assortment of berries, mousses, it was a beautiful sight and a transcendental dessert experience. This review is for the seasonal afternoon tea service. We made reservations a few weeks in advance and showed up on a Sunday in December to celebrate our anniversary. The afternoon tea is in the lobby bar area. First impression was that it's casual and there was no host stand where you get greeted so you kind of have to chase down one of the servers which is a little awkward. Once they were ready for us they asked us our seat preference which included some lounge couch chairs with coffee tables and some regular sized tables. The live piano was a highlight and the pianist was excellent playing Christmas themed music as well as some newer hits. We started off with some complimentary champagne which was a pleasant surprise. The tea selection was decent. I went with the vanilla almond soufflé flavor which I highly recommend. For food we were served a tower of bite sized sandwiches. The highlight was the lobster roll. Next arrived the sweets tower. The scones were very good and paired well with the fresh strawberry jam. I was really surprised not to find any chocolate flavored pastries which I would expect to be a standard. One of the sweets was a yuzu flavored lollipop which I wasn't a fan of since yuzu is not a flavor I prefer. Service was friendly and valet was free with validation. After out afternoon tea we went for a walk on the grounds which I recommend to enjoy the ocean views from one of the benches by the paved walkway. read more

A large lobby lounge that has quite the view. You can go outside and view the ocean and pool or you can stay inside and be on a couch, at a table, at the bar, or nestle up by the fireplace. There are plenty of drink options along with a snack or small items to eat in the evening. Enjoy the company of your travel companions (be it family, friends, or co-workers (hopefully ones you like)) and listen to live music until midnight. The ambience is great and while you have music and others around you, you will be pleasantly surprised that you can actually hear those in your party without everyone leaning forward and shouting. Keep in mind it is busy and a lounge so it can take some time for your order to be taken and food to come out, but the wait staff is friendly and quick with a recommendation when asked. The lobby lounge has a spectacular view of the pool and property. Waitresses bring you olives and a nut/berry mixture. The cocktails are pricy but worth the experience. You can see several people stop in just to snap a photo. We parked offsite because our rental didn't quite fit in with all the range rovers and then we walked down to the beach after. My friend invited me to the lobby lounge for a nice atmosphere drink and wow was it beautiful and our server Kat was lovely and recommended great drinks! I had the Yuzu Bloom drink and my friend had a hazy sculpin. Both were delicious! I'd like to point out Jake for being so spot on. This review is specifically for the weekend evenings. Come! Don't think twice, just come. Saturday night this is the place to be! Some hotel guests of course, but I'd say almost equally a ton of locals. The gentleman on the piano rocks out with reckless abandon to all the hip songs you know and love, and the whole lobby bar drunkenly joins in. We really loved the show, lol. My family has lived in Laguna since 1961. Back when the plot of land called the Montage was the Treasure Island Trailor Park, where several of our high school teachers lived. Happy to say, the beautiful Montage has kept the inviting feel of Laguna Beach by welcoming the city folk as well as tourists. He is always welcoming and remembers us each time. He is a very interesting person, besides being an excellent representative of the hotel. He makes every visit feel like being greeted by a friend. So glad the corporate bosses recognize what a positve influence staff like him make on return customers and longevity in the business world. I hope you show him how he is valued. I've joined large groups of people several times here and it's a beautiful place, facing the ocean and a great place for relaxing around sunset time. The wine list is full of amazing wines from all over the world. You'll find a selection of teas (cold or hot) and cocktails, all of which are delicious. The food options are limited here, but we enjoyed and shared the cheese platter and the charcuterie sliced meats, which were served with nuts, olives and honey. Great selections here. The Lobby Lounge isn't really connected to the lobby, but has a bar at one end and a wonderful pianist playing live music. A very elegant and relaxing vibe. I have wanted to experience afternoon tea at the Montage for quite some time. The afternoon tea is only offered 2 months out of the year (December and January) and the reservations fill up rather quickly. Luckily, I was able to snag a Saturday reservation for the last tea time of the day. Firstly, I would like to say that I have been to this hotel in the past and enjoyed a wonderful lunch and a beautiful spa day. With that said, I had high expectations for the afternoon tea. Unfortunately, I felt a little letdown. Upon arrival, you make your way to the main lobby and are essentially greeted by no one. I had to go to the front desk of the hotel to seek guidance on who could assist me with my afternoon tea reservation. The friendly front desk representative guided me back to the main lobby and asked one of the waiters if he could help me. I told the gentlemen that I had a 4:00 pm tea reservation. His response to me was that my guest and I "could sit anywhere in the lobby." I was confused because I made a reservation and was told that if I missed the reservation, my credit card would be charged. This gentleman did not take my name nor assist us with a table. During this time, my guest and I stood around the busy lounge (looking pretty ridiculous) trying to find a table. After about 20 minutes of waiting, I spotted someone leaving a couch area and decided to take that open seat. When we sat down, another gentleman came to the table and gave us a regular menu. I told him that we were at the hotel for afternoon tea and did not need a regular menu. He looked at me with confusion. By this point, a lady came to our table (I presume the manager) and asked us about the tea situation. I told her what happened and she said that there was a reserved table for us in the middle of the room. I explained to her that no one guided us to the designated tea table and that we would prefer to stay seated where we were. The manager apologized to us and allowed us to stay seated in the area which we already claimed. After the seating fiasco, we were greeted by our waiter. He was very friendly and had a good understanding of the tea selections. After he reviewed the tea menu with us, I briefly let him know of my dietary restrictions. I also told him that it was noted on my reservation call. He shook his head as though he understood. We went forward and ordered the Montage Blend Black, which was decent, but not amazing. In my opinion, the 3 tiered tray of sandwiches was a little peculiar and not worth the price. As I mentioned above, I told the waiter that I had dietary restrictions (I am a vegetarian) and our tiered tray came out with mostly fish and meat sandwiches. Needless to say, I complained because I was only able to eat 2 of the sandwiches off of the tea platter. The waiter apologized profusely and brought out a vegetarian platter for me to compensate for the mix-up. To be very honest, the vegetarian platter was a joke. I have been to over 40+ afternoon teas in my life and the platter that was presented to me was probably the 2nd worst platter that I have ever had. One of the items on the vegetarian platter was a cup of salsa. Really? For a whopping $95.00 a person, you would think the platters would be exciting and top-notch, but no. I will say that the dessert platter was very good and had a nice variety of sweets. It definitely made up for the horrible finger sandwiches. I would say that the scones and clotted cream were my favorite. The macaroons were also very good. All in all, I would not say this experience was worth a total of $300.00. Maybe if a quartet sang while I ate then I could vouch for the idea, but that didn't happen. The food was below average, the tea was lukewarm, and the table situation was frustrating. I made a secondary reservation for the end of the month, but after my experience yesterday, I plan on canceling it. read more

My experience of the high tea service at The Montage would be ranked mediocre at best. It definitely fell short of the lofty expectations I had for the panache a resort of this calibre commands. We arrived a bit early for our 4pm tea appointment. We parked at the entrance and the valets were courteous, welcoming and prompt to take our car keys in exchange for a parking voucher. We entered the beautiful interior of The Montage resort with no indication on where to go. We went to the lobby area which was allegedly where our tea was scheduled to transpire. Alas, there was no maître d' or anyone to greet us. We went to hotel front desk to inquire where we were to go for our tea reservation. We were sent right back to the lobby and told someone would help us. We flagged a waiter down who told us to grab an open chair and we'd be helped shortly. There were no tables readily available but there were a few chairs, so we grabbed them. After 20 mins elapsed, we weren't approached again about seating so I flagged down another waiter to inquire what to do. He told us to grab an open table. Grab an open table? What about our reservation? Fortunately, we saw a comfy looking couch opening up as a couple of guests had just left. We snatched it up and it was promptly bussed shortly thereafter. Our server arrived and greeted us and gave us a couple of meal menus. We told our server we were here for tea and had reservations. He left and fetched, I presume, the manager who arrived and gave us a tea menu and then placed a RESERVED plaque on our table. Not really sure what the point was of denoting our table as reserved after we'd already sat there...but ok! The manager gave us the correct tea menu and apologized for the mix up. At this point, we mentioned my girlfriend is a vegetarian and for her food to reflect that. Our friendly waiter returned and asked if I'd like the speech on what makes The Montages' tea so special. I said "Let's hear it." He proceeded to inform me that most subpar tea takes 1.5-2 minutes to properly defuse into the hot water. But here at The Montage, the tea diffuses in only 30 seconds because of it's superior quality. Woa! Expectations = HIGH! Bring on the superior tea! We ordered the the black tea and some champagne. I retired from drinking alcohol a few years ago so I took just a small sip of the champagne (which I felt had an apple cider taste to it) and then I passed it along to my girlfriend. The tea was fine, but I didn't feel it was anything particularly special. This was a big let down after the tea speech the waiter provided. Next, our finger foods arrived. The waiter started attempting to describe the items on the platter. He didn't know all of them. One of them he pointed to and said "This one is topped with...ya know...they eat it a lot in India?!" I decided to guess the dish India is probably best known for: Curry. "Yes!" the waiter exclaimed. "It's topped with curry." He then pointed out a pretzel bread stuffed with lobster. This was a problem because, as we mentioned earlier, my girlfriend is a vegetarian. We reminded him, again, that we requested a vegetarian dish and the waiter said he'd be right back with one. After a while, the waiter returned with the vegetarian order. The vegetarian dish was odd, to say the least. Most notably, there was a small shot glass sized cup filled with what can only be described as salsa. Salsa for what, exactly? I don't know. There was nothing to apply it to. We asked our waiter to confirm what the cup contained and he said "fruit." Well, tomatoes are a fruit. But onions and cilantro aren't and those were also in the fruit/salsa cup. Also on the platter was some very average hummus and veggie crust-less sandwiches. As for the non-vegan plate, it too was average. None of it blew me away. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing, either. The portions were also exceedingly small. Not that I was expecting a full on meal, but the platter looked pretty barren with our entire order on it. The saving grace was the desert portion. The scones in particular were EXCELLENT. The cream tasted fresh and thoroughly whipped. The jam, too, tasted very fresh. There were also macaroons, dark chocolate cake, cookies and some tasty almond cake. Out the door, this tea experience cost about $300. I did not think the value was there. Sure, the resort itself is beautiful and situated in a stunning location. The staff are well groomed and polite. The atmosphere is definitely upscale. But the disorganization over our reservation and where to sit, the mixups about our diet restrictions, the not knowing the details of what is being served and the quality of the same were just not worth the price in my eyes. For the price, I expect a near flawless performance from the staff and unparalleled quality from the product being served. I've been coming to the Montage lobby lounge since I can remember. Parents have always come here and brought us here, and I try to come with friends because it's always so homey and fun! However, this past Tuesday I went with my family to grab a drink (espresso martini) after dinner in celebration of my dads birthday and the waitress, Chelsea, was beyond enthusiastic, kind, attentive, and caring. She made our experience the best we've ever had here at the Montage. She brought out the cutest birthday dessert for my dad after briefly mentioning his birthday. Came for the popular view and picture of the pool job completed haha. It's a nice hotel located in laguna beach, definitely cool car ride enjoying the scenery. Me and the gf decided to come check out this spot and it's located at the montage hotel. It felt upscale and as you enter, the valet area is small and I could imagine it being a pain when it's busy or backed up. Luckily, for us it was a Monday. As you enter, the lobby smelled like old fashion or a whiskey smell. It's more of a lounge area and they make good drinks. It's a bit over pricey so we decided to just take a picture of the pool from the balcony and left lol. I would come if it's a non busy day or time. read more

I had been coming to the Montage regularly for many years, but recently took a break because the service and quality had gone way off a cliff. But I can definitively say the new management has truly revamped and brought back everything I loved about the Montage, maybe even surpassed it. I wandered into the Lobby Lounge after a long shift hoping for a relaxing experience. I was BLOWN AWAY! The live music by David Alan Baker was unbelievably entertaining, and the service was fabulous.
