How has this bar been around since 1934, while we've walked up-&-down these streets visiting the beach and nearby establishments for decades, only to discover this bar now?! Searching for "bars" while in the area, Marine Room Tavern immediately sparked my interest being described as a "whiskey bar" (they have over 200!)! What a cool place -- with the long, dark wood bar top; rich, sophisticated, luxurious leather furniture; and dim lighting. It's visually interesting, inviting, classic -- not what I consider a dive bar (as I understand it once was). I can imagine the vibe is quite different at night, with entertainment; however, this first visit, within the first hour of opening, on a Monday afternoon was peaceful and relaxed at this locals bar. We honestly kinda stumbled upon this place and it was very lively. It was a Sunday night so we weren't necessarily expecting that. It had a fancy bar and bartenders. I ended up ordering a Tequila Sunrise which was a little strong but I still enjoyed it. They had life music playing and a big pool table. I've always believed that great bars are built on the experience they create just as much as the drinks they serve. As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I know every shift can be busy and challenging, but making guests feel welcome should always be the priority. Unfortunately, our experience at Marine Room Tavern was disappointing. The female bartender we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and exactly the kind of hospitality that keeps people coming back. However, the male bartender working on the opposite end of the bar was the complete opposite. He came across as rude, dismissive, and uninterested in helping us. It felt like we were an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests. Our group consisted of locals along with friends visiting from out of town, and we were excited to show them one of Laguna Beach's iconic spots. Instead, the service from the male bartender left a negative impression and completely changed the vibe of our visit. I understand everyone has off days, but hospitality is about creating an atmosphere where guests want to return. Unfortunately, this experience did the opposite. I genuinely hope management addresses this, because the Marine Room has a great reputation and deserves service that reflects it. read more

Having our Christmas party for my Squad and we fancied Marine Room Tavern and loved the atmosphere and the staff the live music played there & the patrons that were there it seemed like a bigger party than what it was. The live music was the highlight of the night, with a lot of fun throwback songs that kept the energy up. It's a lively spot with a small but active dance floor, and overall the atmosphere had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, our group had a very uncomfortable experience involving racial discrimination from another patron. A man approached my boyfriend and asked what he was doing at the bar. When my boyfriend said he was trying to order drinks, the individual responded, completely unprompted, "Oh, they only serve white people here." The comment was inappropriate, upsetting, and totally unprompted. I immediately reported the incident to a bartender, but the response was disappointing. We were told there was nothing they could do, and there was no acknowledgment or apology for what we experienced. I didn't expect anything dramatic, but at the very least, "I'm sorry that happened but we can't do anything" a simple apology or a statement making it clear that racist behavior is not tolerated would have been appreciated considering how it dampened our night. Instead, the bartender made us feel stupid for mentioning it and was extremely dismissive. The lack of response from staff was just as troubling as the comment itself. Although the bar was fun for the rest of the time, I wouldn't feel comfortable coming here again. read more

We are here today 3/8/26 at 3:42. The bartender didn't acknowledge us coming in. We asked for a menu, he said they didn't have one. Since he only nodded when asked questions, asked if they were even open. Then we saw a beer menu, so I asked is this a menu "he said it is not a menu, it's a beer list". Bartender "You know this is a bar, right?!" The agro-roid-induced mania was palpable. My friend group of mostly women came in on a chill Saturday afternoon at 4pm looking for a place to grab some drinks and chat. No one wanted an alcoholic drink at that point so we proceeded to ask for NA drinks (soda, Shirley, water, etc). The immediate response to our order was "you know this a bar, right? A real bar?!" After 5 seconds of dead silence he proceeded to make the drinks. At that point I wish we he gone to a "fake" bar or whatever else he was talking about. What started as a fun night quickly turned into a disappointing experience. While on the dance floor, someone kept stepping on my foot, and when we politely asked him to stop, things got briefly tense but were resolved calmly between us. Despite that, a bouncer stepped in and immediately kicked us out without even hearing our side or speaking to the other person involved. The way the situation was handled felt completely one-sided and unfair. We left feeling disrespected and unwelcome. Horrible experience with the bouncer that was in charge of coordinating inside the bar. He was so unnecessary rude. It was weird and ruined our experience. After spending good money and enjoying ourselves..out of nowhere he demands and forcefully removed my barstool! Didn't offer any other option! Before this exchange..he was giving off a horrible vibe. My female friend and I have been here a couple times but never actually had a drink here. We had to use the restroom so our guy friend went to order himself a drink. He did and found a table to sit at. We made our way out and over to the bar to order our drinks. We sat and waited for someone to serve us. It was quite busy so we didn't mind the wait. I was there 04/18/2025. I went with a friend him and I went to the bar expecting a slight weight the bar was pretty full. After waiting for almost 20 minutes the bartender clearly seeing I was there with no drink gave the couple next to me their drink never even asked if I wanted anything. I said excuse me two or three times as he continued to ignore me. Finally I went down to the other end of the bar where he was spending most of his time and the gentleman next to me said be patient he has two or three orders ahead of you. Even though patience is what I was having the problem was he never looked at me never said give me a moment I have other orders ahead of you I will get yours as soon as I can. He never even so much as looked me in the eye not once then when he did he glanced up quickly what was your order and that was that. Even after he served me he was very rude. APparently the female behind the bar that was a brunette was equally as rude because I said excuse me to her too and she looked at me and then ignored me. I'm not much for leaving reviews of any kind but I was so upset this is the first time I've gone out and quite a long time expecting to have a good experience especially being in Laguna Beach. After that I really didn't want to stay any longer we decided to go down to Nick's Restaurant and man was the respect and service completely different. That goes to say what going to a higher-end restaurant bar is. Gem in Laguna ... Cool little spot right off the coast in Laguna. Nice lay out with lots of seating and a very comfortable feel. They really love Amy here and I can see why, she is a sweetheart of a hostess and ran things very well. Parking, lol ... Not their fault, its a city issue. Mostly involves short walks to park but its a great city to walk around. Plan a short walk. 35 plus years ago I have memories of our projectionist drinking here in-between movies and having to run over to get him sometimes. Love this spot! It's great for a drink, some live music and to move on. The drinks are great quality, especially the espresso martinis here, but it gets really crowded and the bar is narrow so there's not much room to hang out. There is one table in the front, bar seats, a VIP section in the back, 1 pool table and a fireplace with 4 chairs - everything else is packed like sardines standing room.
