Was able to get last minute reservations on Saturday evening. Prior Yelp reviews influenced our decision to try this small restaurant. The building is very historic with a small and lively bar and a narrow winding staircase to get to the quaint second floor area where we dined. Most of the tables had a sofa seating option and some eclectic groupings of chairs. Our server was friendly and efficient. We planned to begin our meal with the grilled octopus (that had an interesting preparation including broccoli rabe and raisins) but they were out of the octopus. We pivoted to the fennel salad which included shaved cheese, celery, pine nuts and a zesty lemon dressing. We'll try the octopus next time but we were very pleased with the salad. For our entrees we enjoyed the grilled scallops and the sea bass. Both were delicious. Highly recommend The Salt House. read more

Had a date night reservation and sat upstairs in one of the couch tables. Super cute and intimate atmosphere. Stairs are small and steep for people with walking issues. We had the goat cheese crustini and Brussels sprouts for appetizer. Both were amazing! For my dinner I had crab cakes, my husband had scallops. While the crab cakes were good, they leaned on the salty side. By far the appetizers outshined our entrees but that could have been the meal choices. Let's get salty...okay maybe that would not be the best way to publicize a good experience at The Salt House. How about tasty? Eclectic? A little historic? Let's go with that as there's more to work with in that description from when my wife and I recently visited and had a splendid enough dinner. Now The Salt House is definitely a quaint spot and if the weather isn't cooperating (there's a decent outdoor patio in the front), it will not hold many people inside it, so it's a smart idea to snag a reservation in advance. We did just that though the table reserve was specifically for the upstairs portion of the place. I was fine with this as I'll repeat, The Salt House is small. Just a few tables and a quaint bar makes up the lower level while upstairs you can fit a few more folks, but this too is not so large, and it's also rather unique in its setup. Some tables are your normal size and shape while others are positioned around sofas and some straddling between a half sofa/half seat situation. Luckily, my wife and I had a regular table, though we both found it a little odd we were seated at a spot meant for four and were initially a little concerned that the hostess might eventually plant two people directly next to us after spacing out our portion of the table by about an inch or two, but thankfully that didn't happen. I'm also glad we didn't have any sunset issues as The Salt House is definitely a historically old building which helps to lock in the charm, but several tables struggled with sun glare as the windows in TSH do not have any blinds or a way to filter out the light. Oy. But hey, ambiance is still cool and it didn't take away from our tasty meal which began with charred Brussels sprouts in a honey sriracha. A nice slight burn and zing accompanied each bite of these little morsels. For a main meal my wife went with The Salt House Cheeseburger which was pretty juicy (even for a well done patty; how she prefers things) along with some crispy Belgian fries on the side. I dove into the ocean with the Nantucket sea scallops that were tender and had some creamy polenta and bitter (in a good way) broccoli rabe to go with it. I don't order scallops often because I'm never sure if I feel like the portion size warrants the price, but we were on vacation so hey, when in New Hope. Oh and I don't want to forget my solid drink choice (the wife went sans drink that night) of the Ye Olde Fashioned which was bourbon based along with some other nice ingredients and finished with a smoking at the table. Love that. While I round things out in all Yelp aspects, our server smoked the drink and she was friendly enough throughout our time, and for price point, The Salt House could definitely enter slightly pricy regions, but it's pretty much worth it. Overall, like I just said, The Salt House is a spot worthy of your meal. It's got some quirk to it that could come off wrong for some people, but the food/drink quality will hopefully make up for it. The Salt House is not big at all. As crowded as downstairs is, if you can grab a reservation there it might be more comfortable than upstairs. The Library seating is charming but with couches or chairs at unusual heights compared to the tables they service, this is definitely not a place where everyone is going to be happy. For my time there, it worked. Eating wasn't the most comfortable, but being able to kick back and relax balanced that. The venison chili to start was amazing and the Maine Salmon, Crushed Pecan Crust, Apple Cider Glaze, Haricot Verts, for my "Maine" course was amazing. This place is an incredible find. Was looking for some nice spot to take my mother-in-law, who is visiting from Korea. New Hope was a wonderful choice -and the salt house made it incredible with such a delicious lunch. I chose this place because I knew it was an amazing setting, and I expected decent food. I was looking for a unique place to eat in New Hope and an online picture caught my eye. Reservations are required for this little quaint Gastro pub since seating was limited. We were seated upstairs and the decors was dim light with a British touch in an old library type of theme. We stared off with some apps. My lovely lady wasn't as happy as I was because she was really looking forward to the butternut squash soup, but they ran out. She settle on the oysters. I got the chowder and it was really good. My date for the baked Brie dish with fruit and I had the seared scallops. The scallops were perfect and delish as it sat on a bed of creamy polenta. I forgot to add that the drinks we got were also really good! The table next to us was raving about the bacon rapped dates so we had to order them and they were amazing! We arrived mid afternoon and it took some time for the food to come out but the staff was attentive and pleasant. The cheeseburger was perfectly medium and was tasty but need a bit more seasoning. The fries were good. The garlic aioli was very nice. My daughter had the chicken sandwich which she said was very good. My other daughter had the crab cake sandwich which she also said was very good. I had dinner at the Salt House on Saturday night when I was visiting New Hope for the first time. It has charm to spare. The Salt House's building dates back to 1751, and it feels like you're eating in tavern the founders might have stopped by and eaten a meal at. The fireplace in that main tavern room!? Beautiful. There's also outside seating and bar seating. I sat at the bar in the main room, which was perfect for a solo diner. (The website says there's a "cozy upstairs library lounge," too, but I didn't wander upstairs!) The menu is great - classic tavern with a twist. There were a million things I wanted (smoked haddock chowder, deviled eggs, NY strip, crab cakes with white burgundy cream), but I just felt like a classic - their Salt House Cheeseburger with Gruyere cheese and caramelized onions. I ordered it medium rare, as I do at a place like this, and the burger was absolutely delicious. I really wanted to have a drink (their cocktail menu looked great), but unfortunately, I'd hit my limit for the day/evening. Fortunately, they have some creative mocktails, which made me feel like I was experiencing the tavern's great bar vibes - I had their Barely Legal mocktail (in-house grenadine, lime, and tonic water), which was very good. Each time we return I am met with a 1-2 star review feeling based on cost / billing / and service I just can't shake. Go for the food. Stay because you get left for untold amount of time. Service is slow. We've been there 4 times and 1 time service was amazing. This last time we went, we were sat a table that was not a dinner table. I think it was an ill sized coffee table with a table cloth on it. The adults knees were above the table and the kids were sat in a couch that hit the floor. No mention or thought was given to who was sitting in this ridiculous makeshift table. Finally and the reason I was compelled to write a review - watch your bill. You have to put a downpayment down for reservations and 1x I went this was not deducted from my bill - I should have checked of course before I left, but last time I did not and had to go back and forth a few times to get my money back. And finally, soft drinks / lemonade. Glasses are small, packed with ice and when the server asks "do you want another drink" - he doesn't mention it will be nearly 5 dollars for minute maid lemonade. When you are (gladly) spending nearly 30 dollars for a burger to then have to spend 5 bucks a soft drink that is clearly understood as a free refill is a bummer. Hunched over celebrating my birthday this year - hit with a silly bill $20+ in lemonade - left to sit with no check in for a silly amount of time. I've been here a few times, but this was my first time eating outside for lunch, and it was a great experience. The service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and perfectly paced. I normally order the burger or the chicken sandwich, but I decided to order the crab cake sandwich. I am happy I ordered the crab cake sandwich bc it was solid and satisfying. I went to The Salt House for a friend's birthday. I would not recommend this restaurant for groups over 4. Due to the restaurant being small, we had to wait over an hour to be seated with a reservation. The seating situation wasn't ideal but we made it work and had a good experience. The Salt House has a cozy and moody vibe at night (perfect for dates). Our server was very attentive & made sure we were well taken care of. I ordered dirty martinis to drink & the linguine seafood pasta for my meal. The portions were small but the food was fantastic. The food was outstanding! I had the mushroom bisque and it was smooth and rich and without a doubt the best i can recall. The Nantucket Scallops were tasty, delicate and perfect with the polenta and garlic spinach. I was able to taste a friend's flank steak and it was moist and flavorful with the perfect char on the outside. What an incredible menu. We recently dined here with a group and unfortunately left disappointed with both the food and service. The appetizers were good, but the rest of the experience went downhill quickly. Our server had an attitude throughout the meal. I asked for a replacement soda because it was flat and syrupy, but was told that it all comes from the same fountain so it was going to be the same. She did replace, but the soda still did not taste right. It was supposed to be a Coca-Cola beverage, but honestly I'm not sure what kind of soda system they use because it definitely tasted off. With the entrees, I ordered a burger with no onions and had to ask for a replacement because it came out with onions. The replacement burger was also not medium well as requested, it was well done and dry. My friend ordered a NY Strip medium rare and it was very overcooked and pale grey inside. When we brought it up, the manager said he needed to vouch for the chef and insisted the steak was cooked fine. I think we all know what a medium rare steak should look like. To avoid making a bigger deal out of it, my friend kept the meal as is. Our group was very excited to dine here, but we were rapidly disappointed with both the food and service. read more

Charming old space with great food & service. Tiny indoor dining areas on 2 floors. First floor has a 6-8 seat bar and 4 tables, one next to real fireplace. Upstairs is lounge-like with mostly couches & coffee tables. Reservations suggested but res system is strange to me. They reserve 1/2 the seats, you may wind up on a couch if the reservation system says "upstairs dining" (which is fine for drinks and appies) and you need to pay $50 (refundable) to hold a reservation. I think next time we'll go wi to out a reservation during off hours & have a drinks at the bar and hope for a table. Husband had haddock chowder which was rich, chunky, generous. We shared deviled eggs (good), goat cheese crostini (very good) and grilled long stem artichokes (excellent) Very reasonable drink prices! Excellent service. Stairs to upstairs dining area and downstairs restrooms are very narrow and steep (but cool!) Only complaints were that wine glasses weren't clean and front door slammed BAM-Bam every time someone came in . Will definitely go back for the charm & to try more dishes in the menu! read more

I wanted to try The Salt House based on the history of the 1700's building. They do use a credit card hold for reservations $26 for lunch & $50 for dinner because this place is TINY. It literally only has a few tables inside downstairs, a few bar stools and then up a VERY steep staircase there is couch seating and a couple of tables in a more lounge type speak easy vibe area. Upstairs is called the library lounge. The couch seating with tables makes it look nice and is conducive to cocktails, however, it is not that conducive to eating a meal at all. Especially for people of a certain age. So I would definitely caution people to try to book a table downstairs, unless you are comfortable sitting on a large soft couch and leaning over a rather short coffee table, which can be awkward & messy. Also, anybody who is disabled or has mobility issues would not be able to eat in the upstairs area, the stairs are way too steep and inaccessible for elderly or those with physical issues. They have a nice cocktail menu and we very much enjoyed our cocktails. I had Seedless in Seattle & my friend had Round Trip to Paris. She enjoyed her crab cake sandwich & the haddock chowder. I ordered a dozen oysters & they were better than the ones I had at Stella, but the ice melted quickly & my oysters were sinking at the end. They also didn't put cheese cloth on the lemon or at least remove the seeds which they often do for oysters and so when squeezing the lemon there were seeds in almost every oyster unfortunately. The grilled octopus was my fave, very well prepared I then got the burger on recommendation of our server who was sweet & chatty. The burger was good & cooked to my preferred temperature of medium but it wasn't the best I ever had. The fries are Belgian frites, and I like that they came with garlic aïoli... But keep in mind that means these are shoestring fries and not fat steak fries. The burger and the crabcake came on the tiniest plates with a good amount of fries, but it was way too small a plate for both the sandwich & the fries so again eating at a cocktail table via a couch meant spillage. The Salt House has been one of my favorite Lambertville/New Hope establishments for years. It's a little off the main thoroughfare in downtown New Hope (so it's not quite as chaotic as some of the nearby areas, but still has very decent people watching if you're outside), and the interior is exactly what you'd expect from a converted 1751 salt house - personality oozing out of its ye olde wooden pores. I've had a solid handful of great experiences here, which is why it was disappointing that this was only pretty good. In a roundabout way, it's actually a compliment overall. I came here with my top tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality this past Saturday for a lunchtime break from our Stockton/Lambertville/New Hope hike, which I heartily recommend to anyone with working hindpaws. It was GORGEOUS out so the only question was whether Salt House was open to accommodate a meal that clearly needed to be enjoyed in their patio. (They sometimes have very weird hours and don't have a normal website - I've definitely wandered over here during standard business hours to see it not open and it being frankly unclear if the restaurant had shut down permanently. A wave of emotions every time.) We were warmly greeted by the hostess and had our pick of quite a few seating options; my chum chose one right on the edge close to the Ferry St. side, and we made ourselves comfortable. I was thrilled to see my old cocktail chum What's the Buzz still on the menu (bourbon and honey for the win), which really hit the spot. Perfect blend of tastes, and rivals one of my all-time favorites, the Gold Rush at The Vault in Sedona, AZ. However, the second one wasn't mixed at all, which I discovered when my straw sucked up nothing but straight-up bourbon. A real unforced error in my book, all the more egregious because the template is there for a fantastic beverage. A highlight? The honey/goat cheese crostini is also still on the menu, which is a phenomenal app. Huge recommend. It hits every spectrum of the palate and I don't mind the inevitable stickiness on the paws afterwards. Perfect way to start a meal. The entree section always looks good to me - frankly, any menu featuring wild boar is probably going to be okay in my book. At the very last minute, I switched from the wild boar pasta dish to the braised short ribs on the recommendation of our server, which was honestly a mistake. The ribs were good - tender but not quite as flavorful as I would have expected. And the garlic mashed were a big swing and miss - they were drowned out in a watery, greasy mess, and a few chunks weren't even mashed. That was by far the low point of the meal and the loss of the wild boar haunted the rest of my waking hours. My chum was underwhelmed with her scallops, mostly due to their miniscule size, but did say that the polenta was very good. The service was off the charts exceptional though, which really redeemed this experience for me overall. It's always really good but this particular time was an all-timer. The hostess was SO friendly/accommodating, and it was honestly a treat to keep running into her throughout the meal (when I had to go inside to use the restroom, for instance). I assume somewhere in the world they have hostess classes, and I'm also assuming this woman teaches them. Perfect. Our waiter was also excellent - very engaging and helpful, despite diverting me from the wild boar. He was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and also candid about the age of the scallops (he admitted he wasn't entirely sure how long they'd been at the restaurant since he hadn't worked since Wednesday, but sometime between then and our meal, which was apparently acceptable to my dining companion). Like every tourist trap, the New Hope restaurant scene is super uneven. This is one of the better ones though when it's open. read more

We've made many trips to New Hope but never noticed nor knew about Salt House until I found it through a Yelp search looking for a place for a nice lunch on a Sunday. The restaurant is just off the main drag on a tiny side street by the river. The restaurant is in a historic building built in 1751. Reservations are recommended as the restaurant is quite small and only one room on the main floor can accommodate a party of 6. We sat on the main floor next to a fireplace. It was cozy and relaxing and quite rustic. The small bar was right next to us and filled up quickly. The bathroom is tiny and down a dark narrow flight of stairs so definitely not handicap accessible. We ordered cocktails and everyone loved them. The espresso martini was excellent as was the homemade Bloody Mary. We also started with a few apps...mussels, goat cheese baguette, and some of us ordered the bowl of haddock soup. Everything was delicious and the mussels may be some of the best I've ever tasted. Our server was very cool and relaxed and explained the menu and told us about some of his favorite dishes. He also mentioned that Bradley Cooper dined in the restaurant the night before and he had the opportunity to wait on him! For our entrees a few ordered the chicken sandwich and burger based on our server's recommendation. My wife ordered the short rib and it was fabulous. We had heard good things so we came for early dinner. Disappointing. It's an interesting space of an old building but in the library we were seated at an arm chair that had a broken down seat and I had to put two pillows on the chair to make up for it. The tuna tartar appetizer was pretty good but the chips overpowered the flavors and there was only a tiny touch of wasabi so no heat. When the runner brought our entree they took the appetizer dishes but left us dirty knives. The linguini with clams, mussels and seafood was not worth the $35. The amount of seafood in the dish would have fit in the palm of one hand. The sauce was a creamy unexpected sauce for this kind of dish and was not a good fit. The Duck Confit was ok. Not great and not exciting. It was just ok. Server was infrequent . He never checked back for a second cocktail, never checked back during the meal and when I said we were done he didn't offer dessert or coffee or anything. Simply brought the credit card terminal and disappeared. I clicked I wanted a printed receipt and no one ever brought it. On our way out I had to ask for it. My husband and I ate here late September to celebrate our anniversary. It was a great location in New Hope and has parking nearby. It's really cool that it is in an old house from the 1700s. They have a lot of outdoor seating which is wonderful in the warmer weather months, as well as a downstairs dining area with a fireplace, bar, and an upstairs dining area, which is where we sat. we had a reservation at 12:30 and pretty much had the upstairs dining area to ourselves. It smelled old and had a lot of character and made for unique dining experience. Our server was nice, and the food was delicious. We split dessert and it was a really nice meal to celebrate our anniversary. I deducted a star because the chair I sat in was very flat and a little uncomfortable, but other than that, I would definitely return. Bathroom is located down a narrow flight of stairs so keep that in mind if those would be a challenge for you. It's an old house after all! read more

Beautiful restaurant. Food is average at best. Not worth the price point though. Service was great, besides the fact I was never asked why my bland soup was barely touched (warm spots/ not hot). This small quaint restaurant sits on the corner of a street without a sign!! And packed! We found because of Yelp. . We decided not to order entrees this visit. We ordered the following. A great charcuterie board with a variety of meats, cheeses, olives, grapes and a wonderful truffle honey to drizzle on what ever you want. Amazing flavor combinations. Then we ordered the grilled artichokes with a garlic aioli, smoked haddock chowder and lastly the duck meatballs with balsamic glaze. All were very good!!! The service was adequate. The server forgot our drinks. We asked for the apps to be served in stages. Not!! Everything arrived all at once. ‍. I watched the six top next to us order their dishes. They all came out at once with no room on the table. Oh, forgot to mention the runners auctioned all of the dishes off because, the server was not present to serve the dishes properly. With the check average in the food restaurant, one would expect the next level of service. Definitely a must to enjoy great food. Be clear with your server not to deliver all the courses together. Overall, a 5 star experience all the way. My partner and I had one of our best meals here and the ambiance felt like we were transported back to the early 1900s. This is an example of a restaurant that goes above and beyond with its service. From the moment we entered, we felt so welcomed by everyone including the fellow diners. We were given a seat in the window, which was so special. It was a little warm but nice to be spared from the mosquitos outside. Our server was so warm and authentic. We loved it, and she was so nice to our kids (in a restaurant that probably doesn't see many toddlers). For our main course, I ordered the chicken milanese, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a salad topped with lemon dressing. This was a birthday dinner for my partner and they provided a delicious flourless chocolate cake with a candle. It was the perfect night! read more

It's a small outside dining area. Servers were friendly but the food took forever to get out. Close to 40 minutes for our apps and another 30 mins for our entrees. Now the food. Braised Short Rib: 0/5. In fact I would go negative if I could. First off they presented a boneless short rib. Which is a beef chuck. If I knew it was "boneless" I would not get it for $27. The flavor? Terrible. It's the taste of a light beef stew. Literally what they presented was large piece of beef chuck beef stew on some mash potatoes and broccoli rabi and charged $27 while saying it's short ribs. Big scam. "Seafood" Linguini: 4/5 not a lot of seafood but flavor wise it's good. Gives you a little sample of everything. Goat Cheese and Truffle Honey Crostini: 4/5 it's was good. Good pairing of the sweet honey with the goat cheese. Crostini a bit soft. Duck Meatball: 4/5 this was pretty decent. Nice flavors that melded well together. Overall: The short ribs ruined the whole experience. Everything was ok but certainly on the more expensive side of food. Definitely not worth the price, time, and quality of food. read more

It has been about five years since we have last been to Salt House. It was restaurant week so six of us decided to take advantage of the four course $55 fixed price restaurant week menu. So glad we did because we all enjoyed it. It was a good value since it included a signature cocktail, appetizer, dinner and dessert. Our friends had to put $150 deposit down to reserve the captains table. $150 seems like a lot, but I understand why they do that. It is a small place. It is nonrefundable, but you can move that to a different night. Since it was a blistery cold night, parking wasn't too bad. We parked a few blocks away. The place is very cozy, small, but very dark. A few extra lights or candles, would have been appreciated. We had to use our cell phone flashlight to read the menu...and hoping we didn't have any bugs in our food because we could not see our food. It was that dark. The place is not large and we enjoyed sitting at the captains table right next to the warm gas fireplace. The fixed price restaurant week menu had some great choices. I have to say I picked well. We all started with their signature cocktails as part of their fixed price menu. My cocktail choice was the Freudian slip (I believe). It was served in a martini glass. It was a nice change from my usual dirty martini and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would order it again. For my appetizer course, I started with the brussels sprouts in a Sriracha sauce. It was absolutely delicious. I was fluctuating between that and the artichokes, but glad I went with the brussels sprouts. The wedge salad with lots of fresh Bacon pieces and dressing looked heavenly but I am sure tons of calories. I'm so glad I went with the brussels sprouts. It was hard to narrow down my main course, but I decided on the haddock fish and chips. I am still thinking about how good they were today. It was excellent. Others chose the short ribs which they said was good, but not the best and a few others picked the burgers which they enjoyed. For dessert, our Server told us about the rice pudding which the owner's mother apparently makes which has blueberries and a lemon zest. It sounded so good that I had to try it. Especially since the bread pudding, which she also makes was not available. The bread pudding would have been my first choice. Nonetheless the rice pudding is outstanding and a great pick. Devon was an awesome server. We were not rushed, food was served timely including refills on drinks, friendly and he explained the menu and drinks really well.
