I was in Boston for work but took an extra day off to explore the area around Boston (and to try some hot dogs, of course). My first stop was The Salty Seagull in Beverly. As I drove up, I was really excited about this spot. I found parking on the street about a block away. It was shortly after 11 on a Friday morning. I took some time reviewing the menu at the window. I ordered a French Connection and a Midtown. Both were really good. Of course, I appreciated the Vienna Beef dogs and the poppy seed buns. I wanted more seagull special sauce on the Midtown but the French Connection was really excellent. I ended up sitting outside to enjoy my meal. I enjoyed watching the steady stream of customers. I can tell that this is a spot that the community loves and supports and I can see why. I'd definitely return if I'm in the area to try the smashburgers and one of the other hot dog variations. Taking a detour to visit Salem, MA, on my way to Maine, I came across this little gem. Seating is outdoors, and the building is small, fun, and appealing. The food was excellent! The time taken to deliver the food I ordered was excellent! We had a hamburger, The North Ave Italian sausage, Hannah smash hamburger, and Fast Break Smash (Outstanding). I've been wanting to try a smash burger and finally tried one here. I got the Mick, my son got the Helen (double patty--it was big he had a hard time finishing it) and my daughter got the Scotty and we thought that one tasted the best! They had friendly and fast service and a nice, clean open area to eat. You can also drive up and order and they'll bring out the food to you in the stall--we saw some peeps drive up. Everything I had here was excellent. Fast service and a great vibe. There's not many restaurants/car hops around so I really hope this place sticks around. I may opt to try their burgers next time in hopes that it's a more filling meal that's reasonably priced. While their hot dogs are delicious, they aren't very large. Most people will need two to consider it a meal. Normal bun length hot dogs start at $7 for a plain and can quickly add up to $10 with a few additions. After adding fries and a drink, you're easily at ~$20-25 per person before tax and tip. read more

Stopped on a whim because we needed a little something to hold us over after having a late lunch. When we saw this cute little corner permanent stand with an eye catching sign that reminded of something I would have seen on the Jersey boardwalk. I love a good hot dog-especially a chili dog with raw onions and mustard, my personal fave! So the Coney dog was right up my alley with a tangy chili on a poppy seed hot dog bun. My husband got the Beverly hotdog combo meal which is a customization to your liking with choice of French fries or sweet potato fries. He chose caramelized onions and mustard on his dog. Pickles on the side, and fries. I liked that this is like the hot dog stands of my past in NJ. Food was delivered to our outside picnic style table but if we opted to stay in our car, they would have delivered it there as well. The server took our order on a hand held device as we waited in line which was cool because we got to ask her questions without feeling like we were holding up the line. The Salty Seagull took over the former Scotty Dog at the Rantoul/Elliott/Chestnut Street intersections in Beverly. They carry on the tradition of serving up a variety of Chicago style hot dogs, plus sausage rolls, smashburgers, lobster rolls, fries, and can soda. They use Vienna natural beef casing hot dogs, and vegetarian hot dogs and gluten free rolls available. Since parking is very tight on site, staff will come outside to your vehicle to give out laminated menus to look at and take your order, cash or credit, and bring out your order when it's ready. I stopped by The Salty Seagull recently. I ordered a Windy City Dog ($7 plus tax), a Gold Coast Dog ($7 plus tax) and The Dip Smashburger ($6 plus tax). My order was all set in 8 minutes and I headed out. The Windy City Dog had a grilled beef hot dog, mustard, neon relish, onion, tomato, sports peppers, pickle spear & celery salt on a steamed poppy seed roll. The Gold Coast Dog had a grilled beef hot dog, Vienna chili, shredded cheese, diced onions, bacon, sport peppers, & potato sticks on a grilled brioche roll. Both specialty hot dogs were pretty good. The Dip Smashburger had a crisp grilled beef patty topped with melted cheese and caramelized onions on a soft chewy grilled bun, but realized the au jus for dipping was missing from the order. The dogs here are delicious! All beef franks. You can choose their various select dogs or make your own toppings. The service is swift as it's a drive up business where you order at the window. Our order took about 6 minutes. I can't say about other items on the menu, just the hotdogs, but don't miss this place for their yummy dogs. read more

Pros: food was good when it came, staff were polite. Cons: took 30min for 2 burgers and 1 hot dog at 7:30. For a walk up dog stand this is unacceptable. To their credit they did come.to us shortly after ordering and told us it may be longer due to a lot of orders placed recsntly. I asked if it would be more than 15-20min and was told "no", if I had known it was going to be 30 I would have cancelled the order. Tried this place for the first time but it won't be the last! If you enjoy Chicago style hot dogs, this place is for you! Prices are very reasonable, service is fast and friendly, and they'll even deliver your order to your car. The food here is amazing! My husband even tipped the cook. If you want a traditional smash burger they do it right. They have a wide variety of options for burgers and dogs. You can also create whatever you would like. It's a small hotdog shack so you can either pull up and they bring trays to your car , you can sit at their picnic tables or just order it to go. Only thing to be aware of when they give you their paper menu it's a bit different from the online menu so i went off the online menu. They'll make you whatever though regardless! I've tried the salty seagull now, three times and enjoyed the food each time. The operation is very similar to previous Scotty Dog. It is drive-in service, pull in your car and an attendant will come to take your order. They have quite a mix of hotdogs and they have a great Smashburger. Very convenient. The Salty Seagull does their Chicago Style Italian beef like it came out of a Chicago Italian Beef restaurant. We grew up in the Chicagoland area, and are transplants to the North Shore. We have lived here for 15 years and have been looking for Italian Beef since we moved here. The Salty Seagull by far is the best roast beef in New England. The Hot Dogs are amazing as well with the Chicago Poppy seed bun. All in all we will be a regular customer going forward. Love this place. read more
