My friend and I drove over from Boston to check out this spot. I get why it's hyped up for sure. You totally feel like you're transported back in time, especially with all the memorabilia hanging on the walls. It's a very casual spot. You order at the counter and grab a table... don't expect the seats to be overly confortable. As for the roast beef, that's the star of the show. I think I prefer a bit more of a salty, juicy flavor to the meat, but it was still rare, just how I like it. The onion buns were a nice touch. I absolutely recommend this restaurant! The sandwiches are so filling, the plate sizes are enough to feed two, and the food itself is delicious! Don't skip the bbq sauce for the sandwich. The service was quick, and there was plenty of room to dine in. I wish I had one of these at home. They seemed to have a number of regulars stop in while we were there. Love to see that also. Sister lives up the road and we make this place a regular stop when we're in town. Love the Super Beef 3 ways. And the sister family loves the pastrami! Skip the salad, order fries instead. Not what it used to be. I've been a Nick's customer since it opened in '75. It's been among the best for decades. I'd rate my last visit at 2.5-3.0 stars. Beef was not bad, but not the best anymore. Quite a few other local shops making excellent beefs. Fries, while plentiful, had an odd taste: either some strange seasoning, or just old fryer oil. I ended up throwing most of them out. Onion rings were very good. Online ordering system is horrible. I arrived 10 minutes later than the pickup time they suggested, & still had to wait an additional 15 minutes. All in all, not horrible, but It's no longer my go-to for North Shore Beef. Probably won't be going back anytime soon. read more

We drove 250 miles especially to Nick's roast Beef to try their roast beef sandwich. And yes, it's the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. We had the "Super Beef" on onion roll which was loaded with warm roast beef with 3 different types of sauces. BBQ, cheese sauce,...and I forgot the other. And somehow they just worked. The cashier lady was extremely nice and informative, she can tell we're not locals. I thought only wagyu can melt in your mouth but Nick's roast beef can also do it. Leave your dentures at home because chewing isn't required. The restaurant has limited seating which is really the only down side. It's dining area seems to have this 80s diner feel with a lot of yellow colors but doesn't feel dirty at all. The seats, tables, counters are all very clean which is always a plus. As good as Nick's roast beef is...I wouldn't drive 250 miles again just for the sandwich but if I'm in the area within 50 miles, I'll be sure to stop by. read more

Can't say enough good things about Nick's. Learned about Nick's back around 2007 when my brother who attended college in the area brought us here. Fast forward almost 10 years later and, when vacationing in the area, I knew I had to go back. I remembered it being small, but it was even smaller than I remembered (or maybe I'm just bigger), but just as good -- and maybe even better. Not being from New England or growing up eating roast beef like this, I wasn't sure how to order. The staff was so kind and patient and gave their recommended order which I went with and it did not disappoint! A roast beef with mayo, bbq sauce and cheese is now my go-to for my next visit. Everything is cooked perfectly and tastes AMAZING. We also tried their zucchini sticks, which were delicious. Nick's had always been a staple in my life starting when I was a teenager going there after being out at the clubs. The food was always consistent delicious hot and the staff was always pleasant. Yesterday we were in town for my husband's 40-year high school reunion and couldn't wait to get back to Nick's. Well let me just tell you, it is not the same restaurant. The service was slow, they needed two people working the front . My fries were cold and the onion rings let me just tell you they are not the same recipe. Come to find out next has been bought out by another family. The assured me that the recipes are the same but the fries and the onion rings are not . The beef was okay but it still did not taste the same as I remember I am devastated this place is always been my go-to place every time I come back home from Virginia . I am NOT a fan of roast beef. That said, when in Rome, I had to try the north shore beef; and if you're going to try something, why not get the best. For me the 3-way is a tad much. Google it. After spying a couple of locals...the JR. is the way to go. I surmise that this is so the sandwich does not get soggy and is manageable. 1 is enough (with onion rings) but uh...(I ate 2). Horseradish sauce and onions were my add-ons. *The sauce is light IMO. **May want to ask for a side of horseradish sauce should you have an option to add more. BBQ sauce may also be a legit choice but I witnessed all sorts of combinations. There is a sign above the counter that lists the options- many combinations of add-ons available. After a long day of travel to Boston my partner and I were craving the famous Nicks Roast Beef. It was our first time at this restaurant and we were beyond excited. As you walk in you are greeted by a team of smiling faces who are all happy to help you. The menu is on the wall and you walk up to the counter to order your delicious choices. After much deliberation we settled on two super Beef sandwiches that were all the way: BBQ sauce, mayonnaise and cheese, onion rings and a large fry. Damn. IT WAS JUST AS AMAZING AS I ANTICIPATED!
