The Sand and the Sea, although remote, provides an amazing dining experience. I've eaten here three times and the food is always excellent. What's more, the view is probably the most amazing I've seen, especially while eating. The Sand and the Sea is perched high atop a mountain in Cayey, Puerto Rico. Once you locate the restaurant, prepare yourself for music, food, fun and a terrific view of the southern coast of Puerto Rico. We visited on the busiest day of the year - Three Kings Day. Luckily, we had reserved a table, so we didn't wait at all. Others had to wait hours. I had the Chicken Marsala, which was okay, but don't order it. Instead, get the Churrasco or the Pinones con Arroz. Evidently, the restaurant is under new management, so we had to wait extra long for our food because they had to make it from scratch. Some people just left because the wait was so long. But this all can be written off due to the holiday. The location is beautiful. The Sand and the Seas sits atop a mountain range in the center of Cayey and has a clear view of the Island's Southern coast. The food was ok. For the first plate, I ordered a four item sampler consisting of empanadas (cheese and guava), fried cheese, and sorullitos (Puerto Rican take on hush puppies). All of the items in this plate were good, but nothing special or anything I would drive up the mountain for a second time. The second plate consisted of carne frita (deep fried pork chunks from either pork butt or shoulder) and tostones (flattened and fried plantain rolls). Again, both items were ok, but lacked anything special that would make me drive there again. Bottom line is that if you happen to be around the area, it is a very nice place to get food and spend quality time with the family while enjoying the view. Other than that, not really worth the trouble of getting to the location if you are not already nearby. read more

The Sand and The Sea was everything I thought it was going to be! My girlfriend and I just got to Puerto Rico and this was one of the few things we knew we had to visit. From the food to the service and even the view, it all made a wonderful experience. They also had the best mojito I've ever had in my life!! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a chill and relaxed dinner with an A+ view of the rainforest and sea that surrounds you! To tourists, it's a great opportunity to help these wonderful people who lost the original restaurant to Hurricane Maria. read more

So glad to be back after a pause.. Mostly because of our 6 month "Presby adventure" .. So glad to see the ugly cheap folding chairs gone and nice arm chairs back!!! Food is amazing :mini bacalaitos were fluffy but crisp.. Cazuela de mariscos Was great (could use some bread to stop up the great sauce! Looks bad to use your fingers! ) and my Piononos were divine! You want to eat at a place with a view!? There is few places with better options than this spot. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. The place is owned and operated but a great fan that speak perfect English and throw great parties. There was a celebration when we were there and the place seemed perfect for it. Driving up the winding road leads you to an expansive outdoor area with views that rival any scenic overlook. The mountains flanking both sides of the ocean evoke the most perfect treetop feel. The outdoor deck led us to order Sangria (phenomenal) and the sopa con camarones made with arroz, a mildly spiced broth and a side of tostones de platanos. So i went and ask another employee who ended up being the manager, It went worse, he told us (2 couples) that we could wait but he was gonna close in 1 hour ( 2 hours earlier than what was advised on their FB Page that very same day. ) He said we could go outside and order appetizers, we ask for drink and appetizers they told us we could only get "sorullitos", but, somehow The guys that stood right side by side to us were able to order FOOD not appetizers. We got a clear message that they didn't wanted to serve us, even though it was our first time visiting the restaurant. The attitude of the employees and specially the owner was very rude. Not ever coming back. Llegamos a las 4:15 pm(2 parejas = 4 personas) porque habian anunciado que estarian abiertos de medio dia a 7 pm. Was there yesterday with family and friends. The view is amazingly beautiful. The atmosphere typical of Puerto Rico's inland festive, carefree and laid back lifestyle. Now, the food is neither impressive nor distinguished as suggested and definitely not meritorious of their prices. The service was less than average and the owners seem to lack in "first impressions are everything". We had a good time otherwise because of the company; family and great friends. Oh, dessert could have been excellent, however, "coffee pot broke" we were told and even the owner couldn't find a solution. I gave it 3 stars because of the view. Upon arriving I asked if they had a new owner because the decor had change so much. the nice decor had been replaced with plastic folding chairs and everything seemed a little disheveled. The waiter got my husbands order wrong not once but twice. And my husband had to get up and chase down the waiter to get his order fixed each time. We took a quick day trip to this restaurant and it was such a wonderful experience. The view was incredible. The outdoor restaurant was clean, simple but really nice. And best of all the people who worked there made us feel so at home. They were very friendly and went above and beyond with service. The food arrived quickly, they took some family pictures of us. And when we arrived, our baby suddenly had a dirty diaper and the owner jumped in an insisted on helping us change his diaper. Great ambiance and the best alternative for a special occasion where you want to dine out and just relax. The view can not be beat. First time visitors are always amazed by the drive up and the numerous signs along the way of Sand and Sea builds up the anticipation. A bottle of wine, glasses for all, and the aranitas with fried queso satisfies everyone. I do recommend ordering early for this is a place with a leisurely pace. Luckily since everything is made to order, all palettes can be satisfied- from kids to vegans. The piononos are what I often recommend, but ask for the guava sauce to be on the side (add to taste). My favorite entrée is the grilled fish fillet, potatoes with butter/ cilantro, and a chef salad. End the visit with the chocolate amaretto pie (call ahead and request this great desert), coffee or a Frangelico cordial. In closing -Really nice people provide great service. read more

The service is HORRIBLE! We arrived, having a reservation. While we didn't mind waiting for the table, the employees (all of them) had attitude. Even with each other! The owners clearly are just relying on the place since they don't do anything about it. The food, two hours later and having to chase down the waitress, which after an hour came back to say that some plates we ordered they'd run out of, was REALLY cold and nothing out of the ordinary. Adding insult, we were charged with the tip automatically. The owners clearly have no sense of customer service and they don't train their team for it either. Bottom Line: nice views!
