A few days before, at a Llywelyn's Pub, I joke-not-joked that I'd never order a burger that comes on an English muffin, because then I'd have to eat it. Yesterday, at Schlafly Tap Room, I did just that. My excuse is that I didn't read the menu as closely as I should have. I don't read well anyway, and it was late on what had been a long, difficult Monday--a manic Monday, if you will. I wished it was still Sunday. I'd just run five miles with a group that meets once a month, on the third Monday. But they alternate between here and another location, so they're not here that often, and after last night, they might not be back. Also, they might not offer a burger that comes on a regular bun. I know they have a few sandwiches that come on hoagie rolls or toast. If they just happened to a random, lone hamburger bun in the back for some reason, perhaps for emergencies, it would have been easy enough to ask them to use that instead. Their Tap Room Burger, or whatever they're calling it, is a decent-size sandwich. It just seems small because the English muffin they use isn't any bigger than one you'd get with, say, an Egg McMuffin. But the meat is nice and thick (ayo) and hangs out over the side of the, erm, bread a little bit. It's a shockingly high quality beef, better than on the last several steaks I've eaten, for what it's worth. They actually asked how I'd like it cooked. I requested medium, and would you believe they actually cooked it medium? I order a steak mid-rare, but I find that a burger benefits from just a bit more time on the grill. I'm no savage. It comes with a weird shredded lettuce (possibly a KFC Shredder) that doesn't contribute any value and a mild, melty white cheddar that's really good and really complements the beef. Clearly, the idea is for the meat to be the dominant flavor. The English muffin is neither very good nor very bad, as far as these things go. It's just a regular ol' English muffin, like you might find in a grocery store. It would have been better if it were toasted (or toasted more?) and buttered, but the butter in particular might have overpowered the subtle flavor of the beef. I suppose that if they only had one guy who knew what he was doing, it was for the best that they had him working the kitchen. The guy they had taking orders was out of his depth. You'd think that this was his first day, except he had all of these weird systems. He was very adamant that no one switch seats, like in a certain kind of fire drill, lest he get the orders mixed up. Which was very thoughtful of him, I guess, but the way he said it was like we'd done something wrong, or were in jail. He tried to count how many people wanted water (in a group of people who just ran five miles in 80-degree weather), lost count, then asked, by show of hands, who *didn't* want water. He accidentally brought an extra beer and then, instead of just leaving it for someone to drink, let us know he was gonna go pour it down a drain. LOL what a spazz. It's tragic, because this is a fairly easygoing group. All of the really crazy people I know are in another group I run with. He didn't screw anything up that badly, but he would have been better off if he did and he had a more likable personality. Hopefully, he took that extra beer in the back and drank it himself. Schlafly Tap room is my favorite place to go before an SC City game. They have a great bar space with tables and bar area. They have a restaurant side, upstairs and small patio space. And the most important....always great beer on tap! My favorite is the hefe! Service is friendly and attentive. Even when they are at there max crowd and filled inside and out! Plenty of variety on the menu. I have had their salads, sandwiches, appetizers. Their pita and hummus and pretzels are so delicious! I recently tried the ribeye and for being a brewery even the steak was juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The tap room is also centrally located and easy to get to. This was a pre-symphony dinner on a Sunday evening. We chose it on a whim and glad we did. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Even gave us samples of some things to try, which we didn't expect. It was a pretty calm environment. Decent amount of people so it wasn't too loud. I got a Vanilla Pumpkin Ale which was delicious. We ordered a Caesar salad, Steak and Fries, and a fried pork cutlet with mashed potatoes. It was a great meal. Def a bargain for ribeye steak and fries (which was charred nicely). I had a genuinely enjoyable evening at the Schlafly Tap Room. I kicked things off with their crisp, refreshing pilsner. This was just the right kind of easy-drinking beer to settle into the evening and relax with my FitBit showing I had completed 12000 steps today. Then came a glorious mountain of chicken wings, generously sauced and perfectly messy. I took my time with them and once I'd cleaned up and reclaimed the use of my fingers, I caught up on writing Yelp reviews. The Tap Room has free wifi and I was lucky enough to be seated near a power outlet. After a full day of wandering around downtown, my phone was running on fumes, so being able to recharge both my device and myself was a welcome bonus. The staff were warm and attentive without hovering, and the whole place has that laid-back brewpub charm - exposed brick, high ceilings, and the comforting hum of conversation. It's the kind of spot where you can settle in for a solo evening or meet up with friends and feel equally at home. Okay. I'll say I'm not a beer person, but I love me a brewery! This was one was wonderful and our beer/bartender was soo nice and helpful. Super chill atmosphere :) I tried samples of the raspberry (it was very light on raspberry), pumpkin ale (dessert in your mouth!), vanilla pumpkin ale (the original is better), and cider (very nice and refreshing)! The sample size was enough for me to enjoy what I needed. I can't imagine drinking a full glass of beer! I'm a cocktail girlie... and behold, I ordered a g and t, fabulous! I can still remember my first visit to the Schlafly tap room in the early 2000s. I ordered a Bud Light by mistake. I always get a chuckle out of what the bartender told me. Immediately I was taught what real good beer taste like. Later I went to my first hop in the city beer fest at the taproom. With over 40 beers on tap I was able to try so many great beers by Schlafly. After that, I was hooked some might say I became a beer snob. I have been returning to the Schlafly tap room for over 20 years and it always has great service, great food and of course great beers. The taproom is huge. It has an area with a bar and seating along with a restaurant. If you want to book your party for the upstairs gathering space they will accommodate pretty large parties. I do miss the pool table as I used to go up there after Blues games to shoot pool. Maybe they moved it I just didn't see it. Love this location. It's in a cool, old, historic, downtown building. You have all the old wood, flooring, and windows. There's a ton of seating. Service was great. The beer cheese soup is to die for. Be careful with parking if you have to use the meters. I love going to breweries as they are the most chillest vibes places to hang out at. This one is no different. We sat at the bar area and enjoyed some beers, cocktails and food. My friend does not drink beer so she was able to get a gin and tonic. I had sampled a few beers before landing on the one to get which was the summer lager. My other friend got the Oktoberfest one. I had a very tasting pretzel too and it came with cheese sauce and mustard. My friend had got the chicken wings. They smelled good. We all talked to the beer tender and he was super chill. We did not get his name. This space has a rustic type feeling to it. It has plenty of seating and two sides to it. Visited on a Saturday afternoon with a group of about 22. Our server (didn't get his name) was phenomenal, he was very attentive to our large party. We ordered a few appetizers; the pork rinds and crispy spare ribs. Everyone loves the pork rinds a lot. The ribs were a little over done. The favorite entrees were jagerschnitzel, fish & fries, tap room burger and fish tacos. I was told the pork loin wasn't seasoned enough but the gravy was very well seasoned along with the potatoes. Tap room burger was great and the fish tacos were not dry and the red chili aioli made the tacos. I also had a garden salad loved the blue cheese crumbles and dried cranberries. I always have a solid time at the Tap Room. I love this location downtown. The big parking lot is so convenient and makes for a perfect stop before or after baseball, soccer, hockey, or football. Five times I've been here. And for a reason. The people are so darn lovely. I mean genuine good folks. The French onion soup is thick and flavorful and cheesy and an ideal escape from a cold winter day. The prime rib sandwich is perfect in its garlicky goodness. Just the right amount of horseradish. It's almost too big, but I eat it all each time. It's so good. Their fried are not sliced but have that coating that adds flavor? No ketchup or aoili needed. I love going to tap room for the beer flights! Schlafly has so many options on top so the flights are endless. The food is also great. My husband and I's favorite is the turkey burger, the pita chips with hummus, the flatbread special and the steak sandwich! The servers are beyond helpful and kind. This place was a pleasant surprise. My family and I went there for lunch both of our boys six and four enjoyed their meal which were ribs and chicken. The ribs were a little bit dry but still good. I think the wings would've been better if they was coated in a sauce, but our four-year-old wanted them naked and they were good for what they were . Having never been to Schlafly's I did not know what to expect. We were greeted by friendly staff and sat at a nice table with a view. My friend had driven in from Chicago and wanted to retrace his steps from two decades earlier. Our server Zack walked us through the menu and suggested I have the Jagerschnitzel when I could not decide between the safe order of fish and chips or something adventurous. Once the Jagerschnitzel arrived at the table Zach pared it with the perfect beer, and then suggested I sample other beers that paired well with my meal.
