We have been to The Midwestern three times in 2 visits to St Louis. We love the location. But better than that, the service is friendly and prices are very reasonable. We came early for Sunday brunch and the manager offered to let us in to wait while they opened. Who does that?! We have the Southern style Benedict which is a fabulous biscuit topped with a fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, and gravy. Delicious! (Which I countered with a side salad, just to be healthy...) They offer bottomless drinks for $20, too--worth it if you're loading up for the ballpark so you won't be paying their bloated prices. We will be back. Now a standard for us in St Louis. read more

Cool spot in downtown St Louis to have a company event which I attended while in town for business recently. Located not too far from Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village area. Long bar with plenty of seating with tables and spots to perch your drink around it, flat screens to watch a game, and even a small arcade area with games to play. Walking distance to Busch Stadium. They also offer free parking and golf cart shuttle to the Blues arena if you dine with them, which is a nice perk (as of Mar 2025)! Casual and loud atmosphere with fast and friendly service. Lots of bar and arcade games to play, along with plenty of TVs for whatever sports event you're into. I tried the brussel sprouts and candied bacons sides, along with a pitcher of Michelob Ultra, and the Spruce Street burger with fries as a side. Everything was delicious! Not the biggest servings, but definitely high quality. They have amazing deals on pitchers and bottomless mimosas if you're into that. The restaurant was empty (only one group was in the resturant) when we arrived but we had to wait until the staff's watermelon was removed and the table was cleaned before we could be seated. It took five minutes after that for a waitress to come to the table and give us any attention. The waitress was nice, when she finally did acknowledge that we were there but it was like pulling teeth to get her attention, even after we had been served our water. We were in a party of two and we charged 20% gratuity automatically. The food was subpar, like the service. I will not be returning. read more

We're from out of town and showed up around 3:30, a bit before they officially opened, and the staff was kind enough to let us in to sit down and grab some drinks early -- which they definitely didn't have to do, and we really appreciated it. I had the mac & cheese with brisket on top, and it was phenomenal. Huge portion -- definitely enough to share or take home for leftovers (not complaining!). Everyone in our group of eight had nothing but great things to say about their food. No complaints whatsoever. I also had a Moscow Mule, which was super tasty. Went here for a graduation celebration and the food was great. I ordered the fried chicken and wasn't disappointed. It was crispy and flavorful. I shared. Waffle with my husband and it was plenty of food. The breakfast potatoes are a must and the bottomless mimosas aren't bad either! I was excited I found a place to take brunch reservations as we are new to the area and didn't know location well. We chose this place as it is close to stadium and took reservations. I ordered a cold brew with cream and it was a ton of ice and few sips of coffee. Tasted good but need to lessen ice. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles and requested additional butter for his waffle. It did not come with butter and he asked waitress for more butter and it never came. I tried the waffle and it was a weird sweet flavor, so I was glad I didn't order that. We had to flag down waitress multiple times. Not great or attentive service. I had the smoked hash and it was ok but not great. Tons of potatoes with little pulled pork on top and two poached eggs. I found a short black hair in my food so I was done. I had been to The Midwestern years ago and I remembered it as a positive experience. Six of us went there for dinner last night before the hockey game. It was a seat yourself situation so we found a booth that would comfortably fit all of us. Half of our group arrived a little later - maybe 10 minutes. In that time, no staff approached our table. After everyone was there for a little bit, we still had seen no server. Someone in our group eventually went to the bar and asked for menus. After we had all made our decisions, I walked around looking for someone to come take our order. Eventually someone came over. We're pretty sure he wasn't a server and he was clearly not happy he had to serve us. We asked for waters. They were never brought, so two people in our group went and got them from the bartender. Our food was delivered by the GM. He didn't seem happy be doing so. We had to ask for cutlery and napkins. Overall, we liked our food. My husband's order was wrong, but he just ate what they brought him. I had the Buffalo chicken dip which I liked, but it had a LOT of blue cheese in it - that was the main flavor. If you're not a blue cheese fan, do not order the dip! I'm assuming they were understaffed, but having to get up, find a staff member to get anything at all, and then the attitudes - made for a not very good experience. read more

DO NOT VISIT THE SAME DAY AS 12 BARS!!! Can't stress this enough.... My friends and I made a 6-person reservation days before the event. While making the reservation, their website never mentioned a limited menu or food service to stop at 1pm. That's not even the beginning of the bad. When we arrived on time, we were seated 20 minutes after our reservation time of 11:30. There was no signage of the limited menus, no brunch service, or drink specials ending at a certain time, HOWEVER, there was a sign at the host that read "Reservations, check in here or seat yourself. Obviously we waited for 20 minutes for the staff to bring us to our table (for 4, not 6 seats), we then waited for 30 minutes for a server who told us that the mimosa special would shortly expire, however the table next to us just ordered the same drink special.... After getting our drinks, we were then putting in our food orders and our waitress stopped us and mentioned that there is no food service at that time.. Horrible attitude and not a pleasant experience for a first time visit. Will not be back. read more

This was a fun spot for brunch! We came for bottomless mimosas. Our server was great & made sure we got our moneys worth, she was constantly bringing over refills. I didn't get to try all the food pictured, but overall I think everyone was happy with what they got. I was told the pretzels and spinach artichoke dip were average. I thought their fries were soooo good though & their ranch seemed homemade. It had a strong dill flavor, it almost didn't taste like ranch. I was a huge fan because I love dill, but if you don't like dill then you probably won't like the ranch. I've been hearing about this place for quite some time now and I finally got the chance to try it out for lunch the other day. We came in on a Saturday around 2 and the brunch menu just ended. It was pretty full but there were some spots at the bar. We looked over the menu and everything sounded amazing. My fiancé ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and I ordered the brisket cheesesteak sandwich. Since I'm doing dry January I ordered a water but the bartender offering a healthy mocktail. His name was Sea and he was the BEST bartender. How could I say no? He mixed me up a yummy drink and I was floored by the flavor. Our food was delivered and wow was there a lot of food! The spices and heat of the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich was probably the best I've had. The brisket cheesesteak had such a good flavor and the cheese was unreal. NEVER going back again. I went there for a company happy hour and my bill was $50 and I tipped $10. My waitress named Kaleigh B gave herself an extra $10 tip, making this a $70 bill which I only found out the following week when I was looking at my expense report. This is LITERALLY theft. When I tried to call and report this, no one answers the phone and there is nowhere on the website to file a complaint. If someone at Midwestern is reading this, your employee is literally stealing from customers and should be fired immediately. read more

The Midwestern was recommended to me by a local, so my friends and I stopped in for some BBQ before heading back home to Michigan. The space is big and we found street parking nearby. Luckily it was early on a Sunday and no one was really around. Our server was a bit abrupt and never really hung around long enough for us to ask many questions. I ordered the brisket platter with collard greens and mac and cheese (my go-to whenever trying a BBQ place). My boyfriend got the pulled pork with coleslaw, potato salad, and a fancy bloody Mary. Their bloody Mary menu is pretty impressive with 13 different spirits and 4 spice levels. You can also get a loaded skewer which included a pickled stuffed jalapeno, pastrami, bacon, and maybe a couple other things. He chose the pork washed tomatillo vodka, which is something I'd never seen before. It was super interesting and different. The brisket was tasty and pretty tender. The bark on it was intense! The sides were just okay - the mac and cheese had some spice or flavor I couldn't quite identify, but was pretty saucy which I liked. The greens were basic, not overly vinegary. The cornbread was super dry and I could barely eat a small bite. There were four different sauces on the table: house, spicy, Alabama, and Carolina. All were great and it was fun to see the Alabama white sauce which isn't common in Michigan. Overall a decent visit and I'm glad we tried it, but I would probably check out a different place for BBQ next time. read more

I came here with my family at 5pm before a Cardinals game. We had a reservation but our table wasn't ready for another 15 minutes. The waiter dropped the menus and came back quickly for the drink order. I told him I needed a few to look and he just stood there and waited so I hurried to make a decision without getting to read the menu. My whiskey cocktail was good but I found some I would have liked to try instead if I had more time to read through. Our food came very quickly and definitely looked really good. Two people at our table ordered the burger which definitely seemed like the winner of the meal. My husband got the pork sandwich which was a nice big portion. I got the turkey plate with Mac and cheese, a little gem salad, and cornbread. The Mac and cheese looks really cheesy but doesn't taste it. It was just ok in my book. I loved the salad! It was nice to have that as a side option. The cornbread was too dry. I love BBQ sauces but these missed the mark for me. I didn't find one that I really loved but they're ok. The turkey had great flavor so I was fine eating it on its own. I think they just need some more time they are still fairly new. I was excited to try Midwestern after a friend hyped up this place for me, explaining how delicious Ben Welch's Big Baby Q and Smokehouse was. I immediately noticed upon walking in just how spacious the building is. The decorated interior had a relaxed and casual bar vibe. The server was proficient at taking care of our table throughout. Unfortunately, the exhilaration came to a halt when I tried some of the menu items. I ordered the following: 1. Fried Chicken Sandwich (with a side of potato salad): I wasn't a fan of the biscuits as buns because they were crumbly and extremely dry. I was longing for sips of water in between each bite. The fried chicken breading was soggy, and the fried chicken itself was bland. The egg in between wasn't seasoned and didn't seem to add too much value to the sandwich. However, the potato salad was decent. 2. Double Burger (with a side of mac and cheese): The tomato jam in this burger was a home run. I couldn't get enough of it. The burger was satisfactory and will satiate a burger craving. Unfortunately, the mac and cheese missed the mark for me. It was not cheesy enough and was a bit flavorless. read more

Opening Day & they nailed it! I can already tell you, this is going to be the place to meet your friends, before and after a STL Cardinals game. The bar selections and the food are top notch. I always judge a bar by their ability to make classic cocktails. Today, I tested them with a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned, two favorites. To my surprise, they were made with extreme care and professionalism. I'm tempted to say, the Manhattan was one of the best I've had in 2019. Another go to for me when seen on a menu, is Fried Green Tomatoes. Theirs was prepared with a thick, crisp crust and the green tomato still stayed firm. Nice. The tomato jam and the tomato aioli were nice accents to the flavor. When reading the menu, I questioned the ricotta in my head, but was proven wrong. To swirl my bites of the tomato in the ricotta before eating, added to the flavor. I knew my eyes were bigger then my stomach, but I could not resist. I wanted it all. I ordered the Sampler Platter and got it all. It consisted of; 3 ribs, brisket, pastrami, pulled pork, turkey and 2 Smoked wings. Of course I did not eat it all, I have a fantastic lunch for working OT tomorrow. Brisket - Best in the city. Pulled Pork - Moist & Flavorful Turkey - Seasoned well & fork tender. Pastrami - I am in love. Replaces my old time favorite from Soulard. Ribs - Dry Rub, thick & meaty. Smoked Wings - LARGE & meaty. Not a fan of the tips still being attached, but I dealt with it. Food: 2 Stars Service: 4 Stars What the heck happened?! Ben's original joint down in Maryland Heights, Big Baby Q, was a smash. Meats were juicy, seasoned perfectly, and trimmed thoughtfully. The sides were just as good and made great compliments to the main dishes. There was a lot of love that went into that food. You can only imagine how thrilled I was when The Midwestern finally opened their doors... Conveniently located right in front of Busch Stadium and a few blocks from the Enterprise Center, The Midwestern touts a modern rustic vibe with plenty of seating for all of your family and friends. Their menu has been kept simple although if you ask for their alcohol menu, you'll find several pages of JUST whiskey (it's a heavy alcohol menu- don't break your wrist LOL). The Roasted Beets caught my attention and it turned out to be the ultimate dish of the night. The tangy grapefruit and earthy beets were nestled in whipped ricotta, sprinkled with dill and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. This made for a perfect pallet cleanser and I could easily eat this every day/all week. My only complaint was that the beets didn't taste roasted at all. A handful of us ordered the brisket platter and what happened next was such a let down. All of our brisket were different in texture and taste. One was too dry, mine was nothing but fat, a couple had beautiful pink smoke rings, while another was gray as if it had been reheated. The bark lacked all flavor. What was in the rub? Who knew? You couldn't taste anything. In my opinion, good BBQ doesn't need sauce because there should be enough flavor in the meat by the way it's been prepared. But in this case, I needed to drown my plate in sauce except... Oh right, they only brought out 6 tiny sample cups for 8 of us to share. (Who does this?!) Cornbread was pretty flavorless and dry. Fries were limp, cold, and sad (you can see from the photo below). Mac & Cheese was bland and cold. We loved the potato salad (loved the addition of jalapenos to give them a kick) and the beans were solid. I get that we arrived towards the end of dinner, but if the quality wasn't there, the food shouldn't have been served. Poor quality control, in my opinion. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of the Midwestern, so I just had to check it out myself. Flying Saucer formerly occupied the space that the Midwestern now resides. The restaurant is situated in a great location right next to Busch Stadium. You can literally see Busch Stadium down the street at the front doors. This place is big and the super tall ceilings make it look even bigger! There's both indoor and outdoor seating. The space is inviting and the wooden decor fits perfectly with the food. Now food wise, I was pretty darn excited. Ben Welch, the owner of the now closed Big Baby Q, is the culinary partner for the Midwestern. I hadn't gotten a chance to check out Big Baby Q when they were open but this was my chance! Brisket is my go to for BBQ, and I've heard Big Baby Q had award winning brisket. I visited with a total of six, 4 adults and 2 kids around 1 year old. I made a reservation for 6 at 12:30pm on a Saturday, just in case, but when I got there it was not needed. The servers were very friendly, commenting on how cute both kids were (which I always like to hear :P). For food, I ordered the Double Cheeseburger with a side of mac n cheese and an additional side of brisket (I specified fatty). Just an FYI, you can't order 1/4 lb meat as your side that already comes with a meal, it needs to be an additional side. The double cheeseburger was superb, with it's American cheddar pub cheese and tomato jam. I really enjoyed it. Reminded me of a smashed burger, but just slightly thicker. The mac n cheese was pretty good, doesn't make my top 5 list of mac n cheese's, but no complaints. However the brisket was disappointing. The brisket was tougher than expected and was cold. Though I specified fatty brisket, it really wasn't fatty at all. The brisket did have really good smoke flavor though. Unfortuantely, this was not what I expected from award winning brisket. I can't recommend the brisket here, but the burger was on point. I wouldn't mind coming back here again to checkout some other menu items. read more

My biggest turn off is when you walk in an establishment and the person greeting you barely acknowledges your existence. Was planning on doing dinner and drinks here but we left without even finishing our warm beer and cocktail. There are so many amazing places to eat in STL. Oh how I hate to write this update. This place was killing it on food but decided to cater to the bar and party crowd and destroyed their menu in the process. Gone are the platters, now only sandwiches with tiny portions of meat. Gone is the pastrami and all fun, inventive foods. The menu might list a lot of draft beers too but apparently most of those are gone and out of stock. Gone is also my server, it took more than 10 minutes for anyone to come over. I wouldn't mind if ahead of game times (as well as during/after the local game of your choice) they'd swap out a more bar-friendly menu but I was here during the overlap of brunch (which used to be awesome) and lunch and the menu was sad and the food wasn't much better. I actually wondered if the chef was still there until I saw him greeting guests as usual which made me keep the second star because I've always loved his service and commitment. The Midwestern is now just a bar that happens to serve food though instead of my favorite pastrami stop ever. read more

Saturday evening visit around 7:30p, on a non-Cardinals game night and no problem getting seated. This location is only a short walk from the stadium, so I can only imagine how crowded it gets. Primarily high table seating in this space, but there are a few booths available. The chairs are super sturdy and heavy. Kicked things off with the Fried Burrata Toast, add Bacon, as an appetizer. The tomato jam served on this dish really lifts the flavor and the toast itself is awesome to enjoy. The deviled eggs were just ok, not much standing out. I was so intrigued about the Fry Nachos that I went with those with the Brisket and Beans and BBQ sauce on the side. This plate is super huge!! About 10 people can eat off it. The Brisket was very tender and well seasoned. The cheese sauce worked perfectly. Beware, once this starts to get cold, it's not very good anymore.
