It's long gone and the only remainders and reminders are on the 3rd floor of the City Museum and on this one stretch of Boyle in the West End. If the headliners and the patrons of early 1960s Gaslight Square take my time machine to the future, I'll tell them Black Mountain Wine House is where to have a quality 2020s dining experience. This is another "how have I not reviewed this place?" review. I've only eaten here twice and I'm an enthusiast. The toughest decision is when to go. As of a few months ago... Monday night is wine tasting night. Complimentary. Tuesday and Wednesday nights: One is pasta night and one is pizza night. So, choose. Wine? Pizza? Pasta? Of course you can get wine any night. We had a fantastic visit to Black Mountain. As soon as we walked in, the scent of the wood fired stove filled the room. It immediately made the vibe feel like a cozy mountain cabin. They have a free tasting on Mondays, so I went with a friend to check it out. This past Monday, they had four Spanish wines for us to try. The tasting itself flew by, and we did wind up purchasing a bottle, which they were able to a split at the bar on our tabs for us. Then, we stayed for a glass and food. Food was amazingggg. I've been here twice and the vibe is AMAZING. Think warm, happy, wooden atmosphere. Kind of like I was in a cabin. The entrance is on the far right side of the building. It's a great size, the fireplace is so cute, and the servers/bartenders are great. No matter the day that I go, people are here having a good time. The menu is quite vast with wines from multiple countries. The first time I came here, I sat at the bar and ordered a chilled half bottle of red wine that the bartender recommended. It was great! The second time, I sat at a table. Each of the tables are pretty close together, and it gave us the chance to talk with a stranger next to us who, because I was being vocal about not knowing what to order, recommended one of the wines off the special menu on the blackboard in the back (probably changes weekly?). This was our first time there. He got a red wine and I got a house Chardonnay. Both of our wines were excellent. This space is where the old WEGAP use to be. Their sign isn't that visible. It's black on black. We had recommendations from a friend on the food. We started and shared the goat cheese tart. Goat cheese, potatoes and beets served warm. Wonderful. Then we looked at the board. Fondue!! Only on Tuesdays do they serve fondue. I was a fondue virgin and it was delicious. I told him he could not pick up the fondue pot to drink it because it would be hot. My brother had suggested this spot as it has been on his list for a while, so we planned a day date. It's on the border of midtown and CWE in the middle of a very unique neighborhood - we live in the area and I was so infatuated with the buildings and homes! A very pretty spot. The place itself has a cool aesthetic, kinda old farmhouse/rustic but not in the modern style that people are making their kitchens like. I'm talking old school, old barn with stained glass and real wooden character. Very cool. I felt like I was on the east coast in an old pub. The service was great, it wasn't very busy on a Sunday afternoon so I would definitely recommend that time. They had so many great, unique wines to try. Ones I had never heard of. The bartender was also super knowledgeable and helpful. I love that they have half bottles to split! The food was also good. We got the goat cheese tart which was super unique with a potato base instead of pastry. The Mac n cheese was phenomenal, so cheesy and flavorful. The poutine was traditional - if you're looking for the Americanized poutine with green onions and cheese sauce and BBQ and crazy toppings, this isn't it. This is true Canadian poutine. The best thing about this place in my opinion is the ambiance, super cozy, rustic and intimate. It was even better on a cold Sunday evening. The wines they had were good, ended up trying several ones on the table and all were pretty solid, the server didn't know some answer but try to get them for us so that's nice. I think the food is the weakest thing, we had olives, 3 cheeses, roasted tomatoes, meatballs, beans and Mac and cheese. The beans were, to me the best ones and most flavorful. The Mac and cheese was a little salty and the meatballs were good but bland. A couple of plates came with bread and it was not the best bread, not sure what the deal is but I hoped for crispy/toasted bread but it was a bit hard. Took the table in the corner near the entrance to the 2nd side. Opted for the red wine sangria and my friend went with the rose sangria I absolutely luved the sangria! The bread pudding was good but had an unexpected crunch and not at all what you would normally expect . The tables are tiny and it's a little tough fitting food and cutlery and glasses on them. I decided to check out the space since it opened in the space where WEGAP (West End Grill & Pub) Was. Exterior: The antique kitchen decor gives off a rustic mountain family vibe ( higher level than Ma & Pa Kettle). Interior: Upon entering, the inviting aroma of the wood burning fire welcomed me in with an arm around my shoulder!! I decided to check out the interior to see what changes had been made. The bar/front dining room is perfect for a quick drop-in (best friends, solo just because and let's have a drink at the bar). The Lounge music is a mix you'll enjoy! The better the music, the happier vibe it gives off, the more soothing tunes you'll notice the quieter vibe. It's absolutely perfect! Menu: One half of the restaurant ownership is Canadian (hence the fried Poutine), along with a local STL Native hence the nice selection of lil' bites of apps. Then you have the East Coast influence of the sexy mountain antique feel. (Yes, I wrote that)!! I tried an item from the menu of the day, Fire Roasted Tomato Bisque. The presentation was beautiful and not over the top (like Vegas or NYC)! A bowl of piping hot thick, gooey, delicious tasting bisque. I tasted pine nuts, cinnamon and lemon oil swirled to perfection. I asked for toast points and a glass of Prosecco (sorry Italians).... Just a tad bit of ribbon cut fennel made it so nice. The fondue came with a bountiful amount of bread for dipping (which in embarrassed to say we did eat every last bit of it), and remained melty and gooey the entire time.
