After 15 minutes we get the wine. Again, it's maybe 2 tables of people. We get our 3rd appetizer over 60 minutes later. We ordered another bottle of wine, the most expensive, along with 3 more appetizers. The appetizers came out a little quicker. It took us 30 minutes for the check and to get the card back. It's a Friday, there is a cover band and it got pretty crowded. My problem is, there were 2 people serving and one of the servers, our server, is now bartending! There were 2 other people when we got there, who I assumed were the owners. 2 people can not handle a Friday night crowd on their own. Service was sloooooow. Atmosphere and food were very good. I actually felt bad for the servers. Shame on the management!

The building reminded me more of what I would encounter in northern Sonoma, to the west of Healdsburg, or further south in the Paso Robles region. The tasting room is a decent size, although as I was the only visitor at the time, it seemed quite large. Quite a different experience from trying to enter on a Saturday night of a Jazz'n in the Vines concert. There is a patio terrace next to the building which overlooks the vineyard. Since it was a blazing hot June afternoon, I stayed inside rather than sit on the patio. There were seven wines to taste for a modest $5 fee. Four were from sourced grapes (California), two were American/French hybrids grown on the estate and the final was from a native American cultivar, also grown on the estate. All vintages were between 2005 & 2007, except for the recently released Syrah/Cabernet blend which is a 2009. I liked the Roux Saint Louis (a white wine based on the Blanc du Bois grape) as a nice summer wine. The Rouge Militaire is based on the American Cynthiana/Norton (a native red grape). It's a heavier red wine, and still needs a little time to open up. John Seago, the winemaker is often behind the bar, in the tasting room, but was out working the fields on this trip.

We started with the house-made whipped ricotta at our server's suggestion. Lightly topped with rosemary honey and served with grilled ciabatta, it was absolutely delicious. For our entrées, my wife ordered the Chicken Molli while I chose the Pork Cheek Marsala. Both dishes were phenomenal. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert, so I guess we'll just have to return, which I'm sure won't disappoint my wife in the slightest. When we received the bill we were both surprised because we had expected it to be significantly higher than it was based on the service and quality of the food. The attentive staff, inviting atmosphere, and excellent food all help make this place stand out. We're already looking forward to our next visit.

Service at the bar was friendly, welcoming, and efficient. We enjoyed a tasty hot pretzel appetizer, a special Barley Oak cheeseburger, and a Reuben sandwich, which may have been the star of the show. Old Fashioneds were the drinks of the evening. The Barly Oak is a great place to meet friends for drinks and eats, or just to watch the sun go down over the lake. Highly recommended!
