I have been told countless times to try the lobster roll here, and we finally had a chance this summer. It was a scorcher that day so we sat inside on a barstool. Service was pretty quick. Pleasant. Obviously a place chock full of locals. I ordered a cold lobster roll, but was served a hot one. There wasn't really a chance to speak up because I was floored by the one that was served to me. You can see in the picture, it's just really sad, and really small. $30 for 3 rubbery bites of lobster! A casual (dive) seaside shack with a view of the bay. Friendly service and good food (well - the bit I had). Chowder is a creamy white New England chowder (oh yeah - I'm not in Rhode Island anymore) with lots of potato and clams. Goes great with a Sam Adams and a shot of Tabasco sauce. (Louisiana natives beware- the Tabasco is a bit cloudy - apparently not a popular addition - but still good.) The stuffed quahog (how do say that again??) was delivered hot and fresh. Lots of "stuffing" with a bit of clam in there, but pretty tasty. Chowder and stuffed quahog for $8 is a pretty tasty deal. Great for a quick snack before heading out again. read more

A really decent place for a family get together. The place is not too fancy and attracts a mix of tourists and locals. It is a great choice if you don't want to stand in line or be crowded in some of the more popular places in Plymouth. The prices are typical for the area. The clam chowder, quahogs, fried scallops and lobster rolls were all good with generous portions. The variety of beers is not the largest, and they should have more local offerings, but everyone was satisfied. read more

My wife and I ate here a few times, but if you're an Eggs Benedict fan you need to check out the Haddock Benedict. WOW!!! Matt was taking care of us that morning what a Great Personality, easy to talk too, very Professional, even the coffee was Amazing. Talk about a small town bar! The Shanty Rose is the size of one room! Nonetheless, the staff are very cordial, the drinks are fairly cheap, and its a great spot to relax. Bonus points also for dealing with a group of New Yorkers. We weren't abrasive by any means, but hey, we're just loud. I had a couple of specials that advertised on the wall: 1) Guinness with Vanilla vodka - $5.75 - This was amazing. She poured half a glass of Guinness, then poured Vanilla Skyy vodka while filled the rest of the pint of Guinness. This will certainly warm you up. 2)Cider with rum - $6 - Nothing like a warm apple cider, especially spiked! If I'm in Plymouth again i will definitely seek this place out. read more

Great seafood and gem away from some other tourist traps! When we walked into the restaurant we were the only ones there and it was well into lunch hour. The neighboring establishments were full of people. But we trusted previous reviews and stayed. I got the clam chowder and fried whole belly clam roll - delicious! The chowder was rich, well seasoned, full of clams - I could have had another bowl! The whole belly clams were fried very well, lightly breaded, crispy and fresh. The serving sizes were so generous! The Shanty Rose is absolutely my top 3 bars in downtown Plymouth and my main reason? They treat tourists and locals THE SAME. Unlike most restaurants/bars in that same area, that could care less about the locals when it comes to the summertime/tourist season- The Shanty Rose loves everyone the same. Could it be considered a dive bar? Maybe. Their staff is down to earth, real, fun and personable. They don't care if you came from far away and don't care about your attire or social status. These are real people making an honest living and I truly enjoy coming here for a few beverages from time to time. When it comes to reviews, some might think this bar isn't up to standards, but if they want fancy with frills, go to the restaurants down the road and pay 3 times the price. Have had some good experiences here and after reading the reviews decided to try it again. It is off season so maybe the cook is different. Absolutely terrible!! One waitress for the both the bar and dining room. Dirty! Crab Cakes were pasty, tasteless and burnt. Sweet potato fries were good. My husband had the seafood chowder which was a mass of canned tomatoes and a few pieces of shrimp etc. my son had the fish Rueben which had a good portion of fish but again the toast/bread was burnt. I took my one year-old son here for lunch earlier today (Monday) approximately 12:30 PM. There were many open seats available, and it did not appear busy. We sat outside and our waitress seemed to be stressed and in a panic. I ordered our food and my drink right away. A grilled cheese for my son, a tuna melt and soda water with cranberry for me. I had to ask another time for my drink. She was very new, and did not even know what a soda water meant. She said, "I think we have that with just water and carbonation." (Duhh, is all I could think). She never brought my drink, and I had to ask for it again- but my cranberry and lime were both missing. My tuna melt came- but wrong. The bread and cheese were not what I asked for and my son never got his sandwich. On the way out, I asked to speak with a manager. She was busy with another table whose food was also wrong and missing. The manager commented, "we took the grilled cheese off." I never received that meal, so why would I have paid for it?! I waitressed for a number of years, and know what it's like to be in the weeds. But this girl didn't have enough tables to be in that situation. She blamed the kitchen, but it isn't hard to distinguish pumpernickel from whit bread. The manager was also lackluster. Everyone has an off day, but the service today was enough for us to never return. read more

Cannot give even one star but had to to be able to post. Went there a couple of years ago and had a nice clam boil at a fair price. So we decided to go there Saturday for the Jumbo Lobster roll with French Fries @ $18 a pop. We waited 30 minutes for a toasted hotdog bun with not even 3oz of lobster salad in it. No napkins or utensils. Had to ask for the bill & was told by the waitress who was described by another customer as pretty but dumb that they were very busy. The place is difunctional & unsanitary. The soup station is in the walkway for everyone to past by as they spill their drinks on the carpet and all around. I was told by several people not to pay just leave, they only care about the bar area. read more

I'll never forget my days going to the shanty when I was a regular down on the warf. I'd spend my days sucking down Marlboro reds and hanging by the winch as the lobstermen would come in. Sometimes when I was hungry in the morning I'd eat a piece or two of bait out of the totes. That would just hold me over until the Shanty Rose would open. I very much enjoyed the buffalo scallops and their burgers were great too. If you wanna meet authentic New England fishermen you come here. The stories I would hear about long days on the sea fighting giant squid and sharks would take me places I thought were only possible in movies. There's just something about a man with a few teeth missing and the smell of fish that gets me going I can't even explain it. This place has the coldest beers in town and the best ice water. The fishermen would always buy me drinks so clearly they all have a thing for spunky red heads! I can't wait to get back here and make more memories. read more

This is a very casual place right on town wharf. Fresh seafood. Perfect for fish and chips.

This is a good local bar and you should ONLY GO FOR DRINKS and hope you're sitting at the bar, bc you will never be able to get service for food bc not one of the 3 waitresses on ( during dinner time, in season, on weekend ) will pay attention to you. They will not offer a menu. They will not ask if you want another drink. You are invisible unless seated directly in front of them. It may also be hard to get food when the cook ( or at least one of them ) is found outside smoking. Great location too read more

Right on the wharf, this tiny restuarant is a real gem. Greeted warmly as soon as we enetered, waitress came over right away to tell us about specials and get our drink orders. The food was fantastic, perfectly cooked and large portoins. Was asked more than once, but the waitress and the owners how everything was, my sister's water was almost empty and the owner came over with a refill. Reasonable price wise. My only complaint was they have Lobster tails on the menu *a must try* and they wee out of them :( read more

I came here for lunch during my visit to Plymouth. My fiance and I ordered a couple of items to share including a cup of the clam chowder, the lobster dinner, and fried scallops. Everything was delicious. Being from California and having tried my fair share of clam chowder in San Francisco and Monterey, I can honestly say that the chowder here is way better than anything I have had on the west coast. The lobster was really meaty and well seasoned and the $12.00 special for lunch was quite the steal. The scallops were very good but I was not a fan of the batter so I just picked it off and enjoyed the scallops. Both the lobster and scallops came with french fries which were also very good. Normally, I don't comment on the fries but these ones are worth mentioning. Finally, what made this place 5 stars for me was the excellent service that we received from our waitress. She was super friendly, efficient, and helpful to us when we were making our menu selections. I wish I lived closer to this place. read more

I went here for lunch with my girlfriend today and it was amazing. The food was all cooked perfectly and the drinks were better than I expected. I had a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap that tasted really good and was served in a glass with great lacing. After that I had a rum and coke that was as strong as the ones I make at home! I've lived in Plymouth since 1992 , yesterday was my first visit to the Shanty Rose but it won't be my last. Service was excellent and so was the food. I am vegan and they had veggie burgers I was not expecting that at all. I loved the charm and atmosphere , it's very small and intimate. Really disappointed-I didn't even get inside to try the menu. I parked outside the restaurant and was deciding whether to get take out when a waitress came out yelling at me not to park there. I told her I was just deciding whether to come in and get take out. She starting swearing at me and stood by the door watching. I was so uncomfortable I moved my car and got take out at Woods instead. Tried 3x to get ahold of the owner to tell him what happened but was unsuccessful. Would never come here nor recommend. Okay so their french fries are good, some good french fries. Like damn. French fries. They have events and stuff which is kind of cool, it's like open mic I guess. I appreciate that, community stuff is a good thing and it's nice they've got that going on. They have some pretty good specials, I don't remember them right now, but they seemed pretty good when I was there. The place consists of two rooms, the room with the bar, and the room with the speakers (which is the dining room?). It's a small place for sure. The waitress we had was really nice and did a good job at waitressing, definitely good service here. I think you'd expect this from such a small place though. Their fried stuff comes pretty greasy, on the level that there's still some pooling in your tray/plate, kind of takes away in presentation, but I guess that's freshly cooked anyway. Place is kind of loud when there's something going on, so if you aren't about loudness, I don't recommend it. It's good for having some food I guess. Wasn't really expensive. TBH if you want seafood there are better places, but if you want a bar with your seafood, this is a good option. read more
