Starting off there is a $5 cover, street parking only, and the place is pretty cramped. Especially if you're going after a Dodgers game the place will be packed and HOT so come prepared. Plenty of drink options and a water station in the back, you can bring in water bottles as long as they're empty. The music was pretty good, a little quick to change up for my taste but if you want to dance you'll still be good. I went to The Short Stop for my best friend's send-off and had already been admitted and paid the $5 cover. While I was inside, my friend was at the door with a service dog. Staff asked her for "documentation" or "papers" for the dog, which is not permitted under ADA guidelines (staff are only allowed to ask two specific questions). I initially went to understand what staff were telling her so I could relay it clearly, and that's when I learned what they were requiring. When this was pointed out, the tone of the interaction changed and became confrontational. I spoke up during the exchange when one of the bouncers was being rude. At one point I expressed frustration, and shortly after that I was asked to leave. I had been drinking, but I was not acting aggressively. When I asked for a reason, I was told I was being "disrespectful," specifically after I told one staff member to "get your boy" when another was being extremely rude for no reason- it was unacceptable. During the process, a staff member recorded me on a personal phone. I began recording as well for my own documentation. I do have video of this interaction. I was refunded my $5 and told they were "being nice," while also being warned about trespassing. From my perspective, the situation escalated after I questioned how a service dog was being handled, rather than due to any meaningful behavioral issue. read more

I have been going to the short stop for years before dodger games. This time I was able to go after a Dodger game and was very excited. There was a $5 cover, which was fine. However, what wasn't fine was the $75 bill before tip for four well drinks. I was shocked and asked the bartender as to why they charged me this much, to which they responded pretty rudely. I am not dead yet, and thus, I have the right to party, even if my fun does not reach a Saturday night fever pitch! My friend Conrad, happily takes the role of designated driver (silent heroes on wheels) and thus I was afforded the opportunity to have drinks which usually lift the fun to a few wonderful degrees. And to be clear, I do not drink to black-out, or pass out, or pass the line of appropriate behavior. I just drink to have a bit more courage on social settings. Perhaps, the cowardly lion can take cue, and drink liquor, on days when his roar and mane are not feeling kingly. This bar sits on Sunset, a famous boulevard of Los Angeles and thus it invites a cast of characters that made the night spectacular. Let us start with the individual who left a 100 dollar bill on the pool table to mark his place in line. As the picture shows, some people place a business card to mark their place, while others take their bill and curl it slightly, while others just sit in the nearby couches and watch for their turn for cue and triangle. I wondered why this individual placed a 100 dollar bill? Was the person just out of smaller bills or was he trying to communicate the wealth he had in a subliminal way? Like, when a rich from a posh European city, takes her hand and sweeps her costly and highlighted hair to draw the curtain that reveals diamond earrings that cost more than tuition at Vassar? I am not sure why, but I think the person was trying to communicate wealth with quiet yet blaring actions. But what do I know of how the rich communicate excess in quiet ways. While I was waiting for my turn at the pool table, I went from the room with the pool table, and the dance floor, with the bar in between. It is important to note that the pool room also had a window bar. That is where I got my drinks, not in the more traditional bar between the dance floor and the pool table. And you all, the dance floor was modestly lit. Please do not imagine a dance floor replete with people, as if were in Mardi Gras. But the floor had enough people to make the bump and grind charged with the kind of electricity that only revelers in motion can produce. In some of the videos, I tried to capture the feeling I just described. My favorite moment of the night, was when the red disco spined with conviction and flare as a song of the princess of pop blared--- I am slave for U. That kind of moment, when the body moves with glee, when a performer you adore blasts in the waves of the room, and the disco ball hypnotizes, cannot be bought, only lived, which means, again, that I am not dead yet! The Short Stop, has a lot going on, and that includes pictures and signs! For example, there is a sign that reminds patrons, "crowded area, stay alert!" I saw a similar sign when I visited the Griffith Observatory. And I will make the same comment, as I made then, how can we be expected to stay alert when the place is crowded by design! And if pickpockets came to steal, how can I prevent them, when my focus is on the night and its free flowing fun flow? Signs like that are a sobering reminder, and in a place like this that signs, is a turn down, a cautionary tale, that brings my level of glee, a few notches down. But, I understand that their necessary, I know that people steal to survive or to buy expensive cars, with other reasons within and without these polar points. I also sign a picture of a police car next to a recent explosion--- the big blooming fire ball, was proof. It reminded me that LA has many wonderful attributes (like frappes and Rodeo Drive) but it also has a violent history. I guess, LA is a tapestry of events, that all together make LA a city of Angels and Demons, and of course humans. Regardless, I feel lucky to be part of its people because it means that I am par of its history. My dent in its existence might be small, but at least, I am a speck in the palace of LA. Eventually, I did get to play pool, and I lost the game, alongside my partner in crime Conrad. While we were waiting for our turn, we saw some folks having an ugly party contest. One of them had a sweater with a target on it. He also had a pocket with a ball. I had the courage to ask if I could play. Before he said yes, I rummaged the ball pocket for the ball that I could throw at his bullseye. He told me, in a joking way, that I should have waited for consent to touch his pocket. I apologized because he was right, then he gave me the ball, with no blame attached. then I threw it. I made it to the sweater but not to target. He did not make me buy him a drink. This bar is a good time you all, highly recommend it, it has a lit bit for any partier. read more

I used to come here all the time, and loved it. Now it's full of thieves, and employees you can't trust that don't care at all about their customers. I was there Saturday night, and my iPhone got stolen, I right away did find my iPhone and it showed it in the back patio. The security guard out there wouldn't even help me track down who had my phone. Now I've been calling everyday since to see if maybe it just got "left behind" somehow and they've found it now, but the won't answer their phone if my life depended on it. read more

My friends and I came here on Saturday night, and unfortunately it turned into a terrible experience. Two phones were stolen from our group -- one taken straight out of my zipped purse and another taken from my friend's back pocket. Throughout the night, two dark-haired girls and a taller guy were extremely pushy about dancing with us. They kept trying to separate members of our group and were very insistent, which in hindsight felt like a deliberate distraction tactic. Shortly after these interactions, we realized our phones were gone. When my friend returned to the bar during closing to ask about her missing phone, the bartenders told her she hadn't closed out her tab and hadn't paid. This felt like an intimidation tactic to discourage her from sticking around and asking questions. It added to the overall sense that something sketchy was going on. Whether the staff is aware or not, there appears to be a pattern of suspicious activity happening here (almost half the reviews on here are talking about how sketchy and weird this place is). There is a whole underground operation happening here. We felt targeted and unsafe. I would strongly urge others to NOT come here. Very disappointing and disturbing experience. read more

I went out with a friend last night to see a band, and afterwards we decided to stop by The Shortstop for their Funky Soul Night. I hadn't been there in 20 years, and at age 50 I was looking forward to revisiting. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that I wasn't allowed inside because I didn't have my ID with me. My friend, who is 55, did have hers, but since I didn't, the doorman would not let me in. I completely understand checking IDs for younger patrons, but it felt strange and frustrating to be turned away at my age. We were ready to enjoy some drinks, dance, and have fun, but instead we had to leave. This spot is one of my favorites in LA and it always has great vibes! The last time I went, I parked on the street and walked on over, which only took about a minute. It was a fun night and they played a variety of genres that consisted of bangers! Everyone was having a good time from the dance floor to the area where they have the pool table to the line outside. I recommend going early to get a good parking spot and easy access since the line can get pretty long. It does get packed, so be aware of that. I'm going 3 stars because the mezcal drink I had was absolute undrinkable. It was one of the worst drinks I've ever had and would have been better off just taking a shot. The music was just okay and the crowd was definitely not a vibe, the place was full of people in their early twenties and it definitely made the ambiance lackluster. I saw two girls fall over drunkenly and several groups of people just dancing sloppily. I didn't really enjoy myself and stayed about 30 minutes and returned to Bar Flores down the street where the crowd was more mature and the drinks are drinkable. I know this is a Dodger spot for post games and it's usually a good vibe then with a very different crowd but this just wasn't a good night. Probably won't be coming back. read more

Stopped in yesterday after Echo Park Rising, usually a very chill time but I witnessed an incident that totally turned me off from this place. I was passing by the bathroom (women's line was so long, so I didn't end up using it) but as I was leaving the area one of the security guards was upset that a girl had used the men's bathroom. I could tell they were trying to talk it out and the girl was pretty calm but the security guard had an attitude about the situation and then PUT HIS HANDS ON HER. I can understand putting your hands on someone who is drunk or belligerent but putting your hands on someone who just needed to use the bathroom? And a girl on top of that? All he had to do was say "hey please don't do that again" instead of getting aggressive. There wasn't even a line for the men's restroom. Short Stop needs to either train their security guards better or hire a new one. Def not coming back here again if security can't handle such a simple task. read more
