What an incredible place! From the moment I walked through the door, the experience was top-notch. Security greeted me with a smile, and the staff upstairs at the entrance were just as friendly and welcoming. Every single employee I interacted with--from the bartenders to the rest of the staff--was genuinely kind, polite, and made me feel welcome. The atmosphere is amazing! Everywhere you look, there's something cool to check out. The décor is unique, eclectic, and full of personality. They have a great stage for live entertainment, arcade games, a huge bar, plenty of seating, and lots of room to hang out without feeling crowded. The music and overall vibe were exactly what I was looking for--fun, energetic, and just a great place to spend the evening. Ollie's bar is discriminatory, ZERO STARS I came to meet some friends upstairs at the bar here Sunday night (it's actually a fun spot) but unfortunately I'm in crutches at the moment so I needed to take the elevator. When we asked the bartender he said the owner would need to turn it on, bartender called the owner & he was extremely helpful but the owner on the other hand was extremely rude from the beginning. First off who tf wears sunglasses at night? He came off irritated immediately that he needed to get up and actually do his job & run the elevator for someone who is handicap. The first words out of his mouth was "who needs the elevator" as I'm standing there with crutches, common sense isn't his strong suit... maybe had he taken off the glasses he could've used context clues to determine that answer. I simply tried to ask, in that loud environment, if someone was able to ride the elevator with me to accompany me because again I'm in crutches & he refused because there's a weight limit of 600 pounds (spoiler 2 of us in an elevator was definitely not 600 lbs). He absolutely could've said he would be the one to take me up and down that's fine as long as someone was there but instead he refused to run the elevator & proceeded to kick us out after we had just ordered a drink downstairs (mind you we waited approx 15 mins for him). He had security come and escort us out. Even after hearing the situation both the security & the bartender were apologetic on the owners behalf because they even knew he was wrong , I quote " sorry guys, yea thats not right but that's just how he is". I'm sorry as the owner you couldn't be bothered to keep a running elevator on at all times for your handicapped patrons (which is required by law). I finally checked out Uncle Ollie's Penthouse, located right above The Escondite. The space is huge--there's a private room for parties, a section with pinball machines, a stage for entertainment, plus a big bar and ample seating. The décor is fun, with tons of lights that really make the place feel warm and inviting. You walk up the stairs to check in, show your ID, and they hand you their signature red cup, and you add your name on it--which you use for all your drinks the rest of the night. Such a fun concept and definitely gives that nostalgic backyard party vibe. Great spot overall--we'll definitely be back! read more

Visited for a friend's birthday gathering. Not my first time in this neighborhood, but definitely my first time at this bar. The area feels a little sketchy at night, so we parked in the gated lot thinking it belonged to another bar next door. Thankfully the security guard working the gate let us keep our car there when we realized we were actually going to Uncle Ollie's. The security officer at Ollie's entrance set the tone immediately. She was friendly, had music going, and made us feel welcomed right away. We were directed upstairs and told to wait to be called over. The man at the desk gave us red solo cups with name tags and sent us in. That moment felt like crossing a threshold into a secret spot. Inside, the vibe was awesome. Wild decor, statement art on the walls, a legit dance floor with a live DJ, pinball machines, a photo booth, and a private room for events. The staff behind the bar was quick and kind, and the drink prices were surprisingly affordable for LA. Lots of comfortable seating if you want to sit back and take in the scene. What a hidden gem! Had no idea Uncle Ollie's Penthouse even existed until now ; tucked away in a dark, industrial part of the Arts District and upstairs from another bar. The parking lot belongs to the bar downstairs, so street parking is your best bet. Don't be thrown off by the location though. Once you're inside, it's a whole different world. A super chill security guard with great taste in music (her speaker is helping her create her own party) sends you upstairs. You wait at the bottom of the second flight until a host greets you, hands you a red Solo cup, and asks you to write your name on it . Bonus points for creativity if you come up with a nickname or wrestler name. Such a fun, unexpected touch! When you walk in, your eyes don't know where to look first. It's like your grandparents' garage exploded in the best possible way. A wild mix of vintage decor, neon signs, random treasures, and a giant lion statue right at the entrance. Boob paintings everywhere (yay for boobs ), a stripper pole on the bar, a photo booth tucked in the corner, and even a private enclosed room you can rent for parties. The energy is pure fun. There's a dance floor with a live DJ spinning in the center of the space, and the women's restroom has Hello Kitty paintings that made me laugh out loud. Drinks are cheap (most $10 or under!), which is practically unheard of in LA these days. Absolutely loved everything about this quirky, creative, anything-goes kind of spot. There was a $5 cover charge and a small wait up the stairs to get in. They give you a red cup to create the house party experience atmosphere. It's like a dive bar fever dream experience. The decor is interesting like a carnival with statues of horses and a lion, since it's Halloween season has some cute spookiness thrown in. Drinks aren't as expensive as other bars in downtown but since there's a cover they probably aren't losing money. Have about 3-4 types of lager and same for IPA, mixed drinks you bring your red cup up to the bar and they'll fill it with your chosen poison. Very cool place! Hint, in case you are as confused as we were: there is a free parking lot next door. The bar downstairs is awesome with a live band and great style. We finally realized it wasn't Uncle Ollie's and made our way upstairs (around the corner and upstairs). They take apple pay for the $5 cover after 9pm and you get a red solo cup with your name. Keep this! It will be yours for drinks all night. Awesome mix of dj music for dancing. A great mix of 80s (ABBA, Depeche Mode, Joy Division) and a welcoming dance floor where everyone from 25 -60 were having a great time. Dancing not your thing? Pinball and old school arcade games are also available (have I always had such bad hand eye coordination?)- many (most? all?) were free! We stuck with Guinness but the drinks looked tasty as well. Definitely my most recent love. I try to visit as much as I can and have brought/met up with friends here multiple times. Street parking feels sketch, but nothing has happened so far (knock on wood), and for me and everyone else's sake, I hope it stays that way. I don't want to give away too much, just come and see for yourself. Unless you have a stick up your ass, you'll love the place. Extremely Disappointing Customer Service by General Manager, Lauren We had a deeply disappointing experience due to the behavior of the general manager, Lauren. We were waiting patiently at a full bar, expecting that she would eventually take our order. However, after being skipped over multiple times, even as she served guests who arrived after us, I finally called for her attention. I said, "Excuse me, can we order some drinks?" She responded with a sharp, unfriendly look, which immediately set a negative tone. I calmly explained that we had been waiting for quite a while and had been passed over more than once. Instead of acknowledging this or offering a quick apology, she responded curtly, dramatically gesturing to the crowd and saying, "Can't you see I have all these people and there's only two of us?" I want to be clear, I only spoke up after waiting extensively and being repeatedly overlooked. As someone who has worked in customer service for nearly a decade, I fully understand the challenges of being short-staffed. But a simple, "I'll be right with you," would have gone a long way. Her tone and attitude were unnecessary and dismissive. When she finally came over to take our order, she stared me down and asked what we wanted. We ordered two drinks, including the house punch. She informed me it wasn't ready. Given her hostile attitude up to that point, I couldn't help but feel she was being deliberately difficult. I pointed out that I could see the punch right in front of me, and she snapped back, "I'm telling you it's not ready," continuing to hold eye contact in a confrontational way. Again, a professional approach would have been to let us know when it might be available, or recommend a suitable alternative. Anything, really, to demonstrate basic hospitality, which she clearly had no interest in offering. At that point, I'd had enough of her power trip and told her, "I don't like your attitude." She said, "Okay," and walked away to make the other drink. I looked over at my partner and we were both incredulous. He asked if I wanted to leave, and I said no, but I also didn't want to spend a cent there either. I can't say for certain, but it genuinely felt like we were being intentionally ignored, and her interactions with us only reinforced that feeling. When she returned to bring the drink, she said -- in a forced, insincere tone, "I know it's right there, but it's not ready yet." At that point, there was no recovering the experience. I told her we no longer wanted the drinks. I refuse to give my business to someone who shows such blatant disregard for customer experience. To learn that she is the general manager was incredibly disappointing, leadership should set the tone for the rest of the team, and this tone was completely unprofessional. We didn't leave because we weren't going to let her ruin our night, but we didn't order anything else, either. Truly a disappointing encounter, and we won't be returning anytime soon. read more
