Our setup inside the barn - almost everything provided by The Slate Barn!

We were looking for a beautiful, private, and affordable wedding venue, which seemed impossible to find. After hours of stressful online searching and a bunch of disappointing visits to other venues, I finally found The Slate Barn. After meeting with Emily for a tour of the venue and to discuss details, we knew we'd found the perfect place. The garden lawn for the ceremony and the poolside patio are beautifully maintained and colorful. The reception barn has such a romantic/rustic vibe with market lights strung from the ceilings, candles everywhere and the cool metal walls. They have a lot of great decorations on hand available for your use, as well as all the tables/chairs/linens, and even a couple lawn games which were a huge hit during cocktail hour. They even handle the catering! It made things SO much easier to have all of this taken care of for us. The food is cooked up onsite and is AMAZING. We had guests telling it was the best meal they'd ever had at a wedding. The staff (catering, bartender, day-of coordinator) were completely on top of everything, so we were able to just enjoy the day knowing our guests were taken care of. Working with Emily made it possible for us to have exactly the wedding we wanted while staying within our reasonable budget and with as little stress as possible. Thanks so much for taking care of us!

This venue had everything we wanted! Emily answered all our questions on time and was really really helpful. She gave recommendations and shes also a florist and our flowers were wonderful! Unless you wanted specific decor, all the decorations were also included. The food was delicious and was enough for everybody. There was also a bridal suite available for the bridal or the groom party. Even though there was no parking on site, shuttle was available for pick up and drop off. Emily and her team gave us the dream wedding weve always wanted and everything was EXACTLY the way she had promised! Thank you for an unforgettable day!

The cheeses they served during the cocktail hour were tasty, especially the crumbly cheese.

We were looking for a venue that felt like an elevated backyard wedding, and this perfectly fit the bill. The flow of the event space from where the ceremony is held, to the cocktail hour, to the reception to the dance floor felt like everywhere had a specific place and purpose, but allowed for guests to still have places to talk outside of just sitting at the if they didn't want to be on the dance floor. It still felt like everyone was in the mix of the night, even if they were playing some provided games like corn hole, or sitting above the reception area and viewing everyone else from above. We got so many compliments of the space as well as the food! Personal Touch dining is included in the venue fee, which was such a relief because they had the best food options and amazing staff! I didn't have to worry about anything involving catering because everything was handled for us. Side note, we randomly got so many compliments about the garlic mashed potatoes and the mini churros in chocolate, LOL. We got so lucky with Ashely W. as our event coordinator throughout the process and the day of. She was so calm cool and collected the entire day, kept us on track with our agenda, all with the smile on her face. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a seamless, beautiful elevated backyard wedding vibe!

Admission to tractor ride included picking a vegetable and animal feeding/petting. The market is adorable, and we really appreciated that many of the ingredients used in the prepared food sold are organic and locally sourced. We ordered the pizza and salad, and both were fresh and delicious; our kids enjoyed them too. Parking onsite is limited, but we had no trouble finding nearby street parking and walking over. There were also plenty of clean bathrooms, which is always a plus when visiting with young children. Overall, a fun, relaxing experience for families. Great place to take guests.

Lime zest was sprinkled over the cookie in addition to some coconut flakes and a glaze over part of the cookie. Definitely a re-buy. Tried a new-to-me Kombucha as well. There are so many items in the market, but it doesn't feel crowded. I was able to get the last bag of Steep & Sourdough English Muffin Sourdough Bagels. I just noticed that there is a little sticker on the bag - Best in Show from the 2026 San Diego County Fair. Now I'm extra-glad I picked them up! I wish the pizzas offered a vegan cheese. The tacos had one vegan taco, but as an fyi, their beans are vegan. There is a great open space for picnicking, playing, or watching soccer! Fun little playground with a great tree to play on.

Initially, we were scheduled to hold her special day at a venue aboard Camp Pendleton, however, with the current state of... everything... we made the decision to start looking elsewhere for a venue out in town. My daughter and I were vendors at an event a couple weeks prior and fell in love with the look and feel of the Vistonian. Once we realized that having the her party on base was no longer an option, the first place we looked was this downtown Vista gem. The location was major. Moving it off base, alleviated the stress of having to worry about guests not being able to attend due to security restrictions, there was ample parking, the venue was partially decorated in the style that we were hoping to capture, we were able to bring in our own catering, vendors were able to access and move about the venue with ease, and working with Shelly Firth made for a stress-free, accommodating, professional experience. The Vistonian Venue offers a rustic, refined, Boho, modern, minimalistic aesthetic that fit perfectly with our rustic tropical Philippines Filipina vision we had for the party. The luscious greens throughout the venue helped to minimize the amount of greenery we had to bring in to curate the vibe. The open, high ceilings with exposed beams and tasteful touches of modern wood elements also added to the ambiance we were hoping to achieve. As our coordinator, Shelly was amazing. She worked with my desired layout so that the day of the event we walked in and start setting up without hang-ups. It made it a lot easier for everyone involved in set-up on our side. During the event, the restrooms stayed clean, the trash levels were maintained, and as the go-to gal, even I was able to relax, visit with guests, and enjoy the special evening. When I share with others about the Vistonian Venue, the first thing I say is that it was truly serendipitous. It played out exactly as it should have. For it to work out the way that it did, made it better than I could have possibly imagined. Reflecting on the night, the first adjective that comes to mind is FUN. Everyone had fun, especially the birthday girl.

It was one of the most beautiful venues we toured, though there were some limitations regarding event spaces and accessibility. There were two primary areas capable of accommodating our guest count of 150: the Lawn Garden and the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. I preferred the ceremony setup at the Conservatory, while the Lawn Garden offered a more appealing space for cocktail hour. However, the Lawn Garden is entirely outdoors, so couples should have a weather contingency plan. The amphitheater adjacent to the Conservatory felt relatively plain and undersized compared to the lush surroundings. Both venues were conveniently located near parking lots and restrooms, though the restrooms themselves resembled standard public facilities. The garden grounds were expansive and quite hilly. The Lawn Garden parking area required navigating a significant incline that could be difficult for some guests. While a shuttle service exists, we were informed it is volunteer operated and unavailable for private events. Venue rentals included ceremony chairs and cocktail hour belly bar tables. Most other services and rentals must be booked through approved vendors. During our tour, we explored many of the garden's attractions and found it to be highly family friendly, though less accommodating for elderly guests or those with mobility concerns. Children would love the children's garden, streams, and treehouse areas. Meanwhile, sections such as the Rainforest Garden and New Zealand Garden featured steep pathways that may be challenging to navigate. My favorite areas were the Walled Garden and the dancing topiaries, where flowers were sculpted into whimsical musicians and dancers. We also attended the Orchid Showcase inside the Conservatory, which featured an impressive collection of orchids. The volunteers were exceptionally knowledgeable and eager to share information beyond what was available on the website, adding a great deal to the experience. The gift shop was an underrated highlight. I picked up a pressed flower magnet where each one featured a unique arrangement. Ultimately, the venue felt a bit too small for our wedding, but it remained one of our top contenders. For couples who value greenery and natural beauty, this would be an incredible choice for a smaller guest count. Just be aware that much of the planning, design, and personalization will fall on the couple.

I took my Mom who I learned my gawking skills from and we had an excellent time walking and gawking at all of the amazingly designed lighting exhibits. It is very dark in the area say take time to slow down and watch for the entrance and parking signs and people. There were quite a few parking attendants around to point people toward spots and away from full lots. We went the day after Thanksgiving and it was full but it didn't take us long to find a parking spot. There were signs and the attendants also pointed everyone in the direction to the entrance. At the front, security checked bags and scanned tickets and ushered people into the park. Guides at the front suggested a route which included following the arrows lighted along the routes through the garden. It was so gorgeous! People were quite respectful of others trying to get photos of displays and couple and group photos. At one location I became the honorary photographer after helping out a few people. We walked around and posed and all for over three hours. It was a well spent wholesome family evening. You're killing it, SD Botanic Garden!
