Slate has that typical small town bar vibe. Unexpectedly large venue, with your standard beers on tap, weekly specials, & a Spring Cocktail menu. Fast service, good recommendations by our server, Jordyn. I had the Korean Beef BBQ Spring Rolls, Corn Nuggets (with syrup), & Bone In Sweet Chili Garlic Wings. Everything was great. Normally we have great visits, but tonight was the worst! Ordered nachos for the first time soggy mess, my wife ordered the pizza, again for the first time, she ate one slice and she was done. I got the garlic butter cheesesteak which I always get and love it, this time it had so much butter in it I couldn't eat it. The service there is always good except tonight, the server was more concerned about the table next to us , she knew them then us, when I was asked why we weren't getting boxes togo I told her about the food, her response was, u will have to talk to jim tommorow. A bad meal at my home is always better than what this restaurant served us today! I anticipated a good meal after reading the reviews but should have known that TRINITY, our server, may have lied when I asked her if the specials' Fried haddock was fresh, hand breaded? I mean for $20? It's not nice to lie, trinity! I really wanted a burger but she shared that they no longer serve fresh cut fries and so, I pivoted to an entree. Ok, Saturday @ 4 pm: my husband ordered the SPECIALS Butter Steak, Brussels sprouts and baked potato. The contents were all brown, he couldn't even distinguish between the glob of (grey meat) steak and the Brussels which were accompanied by a left over, barely warm, starched baked potato!!!!! Disgusting, he cut into his steak and it was recooked as evident by the GREY middle meat. $22.49 And to pay an up charge for the lobster bisque soup that starts in a poly bag and is standard issue throughout restaurants from the purveyor. Ever notice the soup looks the same at most restaurants. Sad but true! My haddock was deep fried, out of a frozen food box as both ends were super hard and inside fish was hardly haddock. More like whiting or pollock. $20 When a person pays for food, it should be exceptional. I have been here many times and have reviewed this wonderful establishment before. Last night we had another fantastic meal! I had the Italian chopped salad, which was HUGE!!! He had the cowboy ribeye with sweet potatoes and grilled Brussel sprouts. We even enjoyed dessert. We shared the limoncello mascarpone cake and the apple peach cobbler! Went for a quick snack and beverage with a friend. The bartender was great, service fast and food was amazing. For such a tiny spot it's impressive. They have a very nice front deck where you can bring your drinks and enjoy the small town setting. read more

Nice place, super friendly staff and owner. The steak special was ok, not a fan of NY Strip , too much gristle, but tasted good and for $15, can't complain too much...everything else was very good...my buddy loved his wings...definitely will return. I'll get the wings next time! read more

Food was very good, nice portions and reasonable prices. Nice home town bar vibe, clean and comfortable. Once we were seated, the owner came over to our table and welcomed us and thank us for coming in. He knew it was our first time. Once we had our food, he came over again and asked if everything was to our liking. When we were leaving he came over and thanked us again for coming in and hoped we would come back. Food, service, and hospitality is always top notch. We haven't had a single meal we didn't like, but the cheesesteak sauce has a special pepper-y kick to it. My kids love the boneless wings, and we will keep going back. read more

Generous rating here solely based on that it is the best place in Pen Argyl and the burgers and the wings are great (blue cheese watery). The atmosphere is very nice for a pub. A few TV's going but no volume. The negatives are as follows: Ask for prices of beer bottles because they run high. No excuse in America not to have pickle chips on a hamburger. No place in America shouldn't have lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle chips on a burger. Nobody wants to cut a pickle spear. Here is why the place doesn't fill seats. THE WORLDS WORST French fries. Fries are the lifeblood of a pub. They have those fries with that infused crust that serves no purpose but to trap oil and minimize the potato flavor. It ruins the entire experience. No excuse to serve these ever. My entire table left angry. Steak fries, hand cut, regular cut, curly fries, waffle cut and even tater tots would be acceptable. These are the only fries made that are terrible. Please change them and the place will be packed. read more

Just moved to Pen Argyl. Friendly atmosphere and great pub food menu. The wings were great. Spicy wings were wet and good blue cheese. Great wine by the glass. Beer selection a little limited but manageable. Can't wait to come back again. One of my favorite places in Bangor. Great wings, good vibes, strong drinks! Just be sure to watch your step if you visit during the cold months. Parking is up a hill behind the restaurant, so it can be wet or icy sometimes. read more

This is the best place to eat and drink in Pen Argyl and its within walking distance from me wooohooo!!! This place was known as a biker bar but the new owners completely gutted the place and changed EVERYTHING. The first time I stepped into the Slate I couldn't believe it was the same place! It looks absolutely amazing! It is now my local bar and I love it there! The owners, bartenders, and waitstaff all make you feel so welcome. It is such a well rounded restaurant and bar. Its great to go and grab some drinks at the bar, but it is also a great family restaurant. My favorite part about the bar is that they have great draft and bottle selections for beer...finally some decent beer in this town! The food is also really good. Worst food we have had in a long time. French fries were under cooked and greasy. The salad showed signs of feeze on the edges of the Romain. The waitress acted offended and was very sarcastic. Don't want to go ever do that place again. Am usually a big tipper,not that night. read more

The wings are very good. Hot wings are in fact, hot. I tried the chipotle lime wings and they were good, maybe a bit more sauce than I prefer, but tasty. I've had a few specials and they were freshly made and good. The flatbread pizza was homemade bread with homemade sauce. Next time I'd get toppings because mozzarella itself is pretty tasteless. This place was amazing! The food was absolutely wonderful and our bartender was above expectation! We ended up spending several hours in there trying different foods and all were amazing!
