Disappointing! The restaurant started out strong when it first opened a few years ago. Now the restaurant is crowded--mainly becuause it has a great river view, but the kitchen staff cannot handle success. The meals are expensive, but the portions are smaller. The food at a recent meal arrived cold. The "roasted" beet salad--one of the specials on the menu that night--was horrible and must of been fashioned from pickled beets in a jar. There are many, much better placed to dine in and around Thomaston- Rockland. Do yourself a favor: don't bother to detour to Slipway. You are likely to regret spending a lot of money for a mediocre meal. read more

View outstanding. We had good service but we're early for dinner. Had flounder special that was a 10. Summer vegetables also excellent. Rice was undercooked or maybe a re-heat. Not seasoned much but that was ok. Chicken dish not so good. Dry and tough. Did not appear cooked to order. Something in the kitchens procedures robbed the chicken of its juices. I shared my flounder with my wife. Desert was a blueberry pie and it was good. Because of the location we will try again but will order carefully. read more

We used to go here a lot and it was our favorite as of 3-4 years ago. The past few times we have gone, the service has typically been slow and the food was lacking. This past time, the service was average but the food wasn't great. Our clams were under cooked, the grilled cheese for our daughter was very crunchy, and our $14 scallop plate was comprised of 3 small scallops and a tiny salad. We loved going here because it's a beautiful deck and the food was always excellent, but the food has gone to average or below average and the prices are high. read more

By now everyone should know that the owner of the Slipway came from the that place in Port Clyde that they used to rave about. If you liked the old place in Port Clyde your gonna love the Slipway. First lets talk about the view. You get a choice of eating on the pier or inside looking out at the harbor. What a view. Go at sunset. The food. The fried oysters are a must. Light, juicy and very tasty. Mussells are good, reasonably priced (they are an appetizer but it is a dinner sized serving anywhere else, and not as costly). The fish and chips was a little light on the fish portion but the fish fresh, flaky and moist. We ordered a side order of corn. It sure tasted like it came off the stalk that day, and I wonder if it came from Beth's Farm. If so, what a treat because it was sweeeet. We saw a table order the steak, ribeye I believe, and it looked like a huge cut. If your travelling and you want to get away from the more tourist focused places, enjoy a fabulous view and nothing but fresh seafood and local greens and veggies this is your place. This must be the best location in Maine. Sure, standard calamari and sea-shanty grub, but seriously, a bar on a pier? It's just heavenly. And the service I had was great- fast, funny, and attentive. A must visit while staying in the area. Party of 6, so we called for reservations, which puts you inside. Turned out to be a nice night, but didnt want to risk bugs or temp change. We've been coming here annually for a few yrs, as we have local relatives. This time, it was better than average. New owner. What a great waitress we had, too. Nice wine list, we chose a greneche which is hard to find! 2 in our group requested the menu item, macaroni and cheese, but with lobster. No problem. Tons of lobster meat, and creamy delicious mac cheese, BTW. So, may I suggest they put it on the menu? Prices were fine, about $22 for a swordfish special, good portion size. The pier/deck looked inviting, but we had been warned about bug potential in evening.so, try it at lunch! read more

I am in love with this place! My husband and I were staying in Camden last weekend and we had read about Slipway while doing some research and just had to check it out...It exceeded expectations...We only stopped for some appetizers and cold beers on this trip - We shared the fried oysters and fried monkfish bites - both came with tasty sauces and food portions were perfect for us for an afternoon snack and they were cooked perfectly. The ambience is just fun and light and the music selection playing made you want to stay all day. Service was outstanding....the only reason it isn't 5 stars is because we really didn't have much to eat but I'm confident on my return trip - they'll prove to be 5 stars...especially after seeing what was landing on tables around us. We are returning to Maine in September for a week and something tells me this will be our afternoon stop many days that week! read more

Scott Yakovenko is the chef/owner, who ran the Dip Net in Port Clyde for many years. We noticed that the food there seemed to be less special a while back, then we heard that he was no longer involved, which explains it. The menu and quality is much like the Dip Net was - interesting and unusual items as well as the fry shack classics, and very well prepared. The dock seating has a great view and now he has a huge amount of indoor seating, and lots of parking. Very easy to find: as you're passing thru Thomaston towards Rockland, take a right at the Thomaston Cafe (pretty good too), go a few blocks to a dead end, turn left and follow the shore road. read more

Extremely poor service, I had to wait over an hour and half for my meal. Every other family around us was served first, regardless that we ordered before them. Twice the waitress told us our food would be out and those were nearly half hour increments of waiting in between, still no service although the restaurant was not even that busy. I couldn't hear my family and our conversation over the loud jazz band. The servers were slow and inexperienced. And the corn was ice cold, undercooked and the meals were bland. Not impressed. After reading the wonderful reviews of this restaurant, and the fact that dining with your dog is allowed on the deck, we were tremendously disappointed our dinner at the end of July. The soup special was clam chowder; it arrived cold and tasted as if it had come from a can. Our waitress was nowhere to be found, so I walked the plate back to the kitchen. I waited until someone figured out I was unhappy. My wife ordered the special salad, listed as "roasted beet" salad. What arrived were jellied beets from a can. Again, we had to chase down our waitress to complain. We are seasoned diners, and are not high maintenance. Never did we hear from the chef, owner. The more the problems arose, the more our waitress seemed to be absent. Even the hostess was less than cordial when we explained the poor food and service. Awesome location, good layout for Covid-19 dining, mediocre service, inconsistent quality, way overpriced. The "local" cheese plate was two hunks of cheese, a sliver of another cheese, three small slices of ciabatta from the grocery store, and some carmelized onion relish. When we asked about the Aleppo pepper and chives advertised on the menu, they said, ah, well, we don't have those. Fourteen bucks. Local oysters on the half shell were outstanding -- but 6 for $14, in Maine! Haddock plate a generous and fresh portion, properly cooked, fries really good. Roasted beet salad for $12 was not as good as Whole Foods. Mussels farmed from PEI, that's okay, but 12 of them for another $14 with a weak wine and dijon sauce. With two decent glasses of wine, two good craft beers, two cocktails, bill with tip at $200 for 4, I'm underwhelmed. Try downtown Rockland, 4 miles away, with more choice, better quality, better pricing, better service. read more

We spent a month in Rockport this year and during our stay we were introduced to the Slipway by Darryl (from down the road with his business "Rowable Classics")& Beverley who we met during our stay. Our first visit was a light lunch on a wonderful summers day where we discussed the merits of the film Lincoln with an Irishman playing the lead and Tom Cruise trying to "extend" himself into the role of Jack Reacher. I digress we had a wonderful lunch of lightly curried haddock with salad and it was wonderful. So good we went back three times to enjoy both food, the location and view. I phoned the Slipway all day to make a reservation. Phone line was always busy. Arrived at 5:30 with a party of 11 and asked for a table with a view of the water. There were tables on both porches available. We were told they had been reserved. An hour later and a $250 tab the tables on the porch were still empty. Our table, across from the kitchen window, had a strong kerosine like smell.It was quite unpleasant. I have eaten at Slipway since it first opened. I was thoroughly disappointed by the seating choice and the ambiance of the seating we had. The food was ok. The steak was quite fatty. Come on Slipway, you can do better. read more

Had it not have been for the excellent and friendly server I would have given only a one star review to The Slipway. My wife and I had lunch there today and were disappointed with the food. She ordered the fish and chips which were served in a basket which made it impossible to eat without using your fingers. Not the way one expects to eat fish and chips. It consisted of three small pieces of fish and a tiny portion of cole slaw and a lot of small pieces of greasy French fries. My chowder was luke warm and looked and tasted like Snow's clam chowder right out of the can. My fried clam basket for $22 had the same greasy pieces of French fries with a tiny portion of Cole slaw with a reasonable size portion of fried clams. Unfortunately the clams were not at all crisp and appeared to be somewhat undercooked. Not a good lunch and we will not return. read more

Eight of us in a wedding party had lunch here one day on the recommendation of a friend who lives in the area. We enjoyed our visit so much that we returned the next day with more of our party. We were seated on the dock area at picnic tables. We found the service to be friendly and attentive. The clam chowder was tasty, meaty, and not starchy like you might get at a local diner. The oysters were cold, briny, and delicious. Try the smoked salmon appetizer with a fine array of accompaniments. We all agreed that the mussels were the tastiest and largest we have ever experienced. While the lobster roll is delightful, chock full of mostly lobster meat, the crab roll disappoints with shredded crab with little flavor. There is no better whole lobster than what is served here, either chilled and shelled, or steamed. Oh, no matter how full you think that you are, do not miss desert, especially the home made blue berry pie. read more

This place fits the profile for tourists. You can get your beautiful harbor view at a cute little spot and stomach a single bad, expensive meal and then move on. The food is unremarkable, underseasoned, and the portions are decidedly skimpy. I got a daily special of "blackened" hake, scallops, and quinoa. The hake piece was well cooked, but totally underseasoned (yet blackened!) and tiny and came with two scallops. The small amount of quinoa was disappeared into a giant amount of salad, meant to look like it was a substantial meal, I suppose. I left most of what was brought on my plate and left hungry. Folks complain about the service...ours was okay...they were way overstaffed that day. I've been there three different times hoping this convenient local place would turn the corner, but no such luck. Avoid. read more

Do NOT do it. First visit. Lifelong Mainers and our first visit on the way to the Olson House. Overpriced. Our lunch was $75 with tip. Poor quality food. I had mussels (which I order often at other establishments), and hands down these were the worst I have ever had. Slimy and not cooked completely though the shells were open. Very large size. Broth with no flavor, had to ask for butter. Could not eat more than three, the slime factor. Had haddock dinner, the fries were shoestring and so overcooked and cool that I could not get a fork into them without them breaking apart. Tried eating with my fingers and crunched like potato chips. My companion had a lobster roll without lettuce that had the equivalent of a hot dog's worth of meat in a hot dog bun. The cup of lobster bisque was a very strange non-lobster flavor for Maine. Go to Red's for the best lobster roll in Maine. The establishment is in poor condition, paint peeling, some picnic tables very worn etc. Such a disappointing and overly expensive lunch. read more

Very disappointed. The best thing about this restaurant is the view!! This is our first time in mid coast Maine and we drove from where we are staying in Hope to try this restaurant, not worth the drive. The waitress was not very friendly and that impacted the meal from the start. I got the tuna tartar app which I will say was beautifully presented and very tasty. My husband got the cheese plate and it was underwhelming- 2 small slices of not very fresh tasting bread and 3 small pieces of cheese with some olives. My husband got the Fish and Chips basket and boy was it small. It looked like a lunch portion. Four little pieces of fish and the batter was soggy and the fries were cold. I ordered the Lobster dinner with corn and bread. They forgot the bread and when I asked for it I received 2 small slices of the same "not so fresh" bread my husband had on his cheese plate. The corn on the cob was stone cold and the lobster slightly undercooked to the point that some of it was gelatinous and inedible!! We left hungry and spent quite a pretty penny, will never return! read more

The outdoor seating and the view are lovely. But not enough to make up for the poor/slow service, meager portions, and expensive prices. Examples: it took a loooong time for our waitress to come by after we were seated. And we were never given the specials menu. Also, we ordered lobster bisque. Not hot, sent it back. Second try, a little hotter but we had been waiting so long by then that we just ate it -- even though it wasn't very good. Dinner entree was supposed to be fish and scallops, came out as a small piece of fish without scallops. We pointed it out, they brought them eventually: just two scallops. My daughter's corn on the cob was undercooked, my son's was overcooked. We asked to see the manager, he sent a waitress, didn't bother to come by himself.
