We are so glad we came across this gem of a restaurant on a previous trip to Ouray. Staying nearby this time we decided to stop in again. To us, this place represents exactly what we love about Ouray: unassuming, welcoming and exceeding expectations. It's a place where you can sit inside or outside and sip a martini from a full bar. (Although we fell for the smokey Old Fashioned). A piano and saxophone combo played jazz. Conversations flowed on all sides at big tables. Located on the cozy grounds of the Ouray Riverside Resort complex, the Smokehouse recently added an enclosed patio with roll-up garage doors to give diners the indoor-outdoor feel. The rib platter and sides were terrific. The meat had a nice peppery bark and came easily off the bone. The Caesar salad and Mac and Cheese sides also were thoughtfully prepared. Desert was a rich Creme Brûlée cheesecake. Travis and his fellow hard-working servers were helpful and friendly. We can't recommend this place enough. read more

Fun place, picnic tables but industrial inside with metal and wood. We had the Brussels sprouts and they are amazing! So tasty, definitely sweetened, multiple textures and flavors. We ordered the Feast for 3 of us with some leftovers. Now to start off, I grew up in Texas and have opinions about BBQ. Hands down I love the ribs here, good smoky flavor, well seasoned, good bark. So yum! Brisket and pulled pork are good. I love to put the coleslaw with the pulled pork. Desserts were tasty too. Staff is so friendly. We had live jazz music while we were here. Go here! We meandered through town prior to and nothing was calling to us so we started down the road and happened upon this place and I'm so thrilled about it! Wow. Such complex pairings in the brisket eggs Benedict. Loved the chunky potatoes to clean up the hollandaise sauce. Son had eggs, brisket and hash. This place left me overhearing multiple people say to waitress "wow this was good." It is a memorable experience. Heard good things about The Smokehouse in Ouray, Colorado. We decided to give it a try on Thursday evening. Service was fair but slow and they didn't offer refills on our soda which were almost empty when our food was delivered to the table. We both had the brisket 1/2 lb meal that came with baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw. I was not a fan of any of the meal. My wife thought it was fine. Meat was dry and little taste, potato salad was dry, coleslaw was swimming in juice, the beans were similar to a can of cheap baked beans. Bbq sauce was too vinegary for me. I really had high hopes for this joint, but in the evening both my wife and I were feeling sick and she decided to throw out the leftovers she brought from our two plates back to our camper. When we got the bill there was an extra charge for the "kitchen" and when we selected to continue (cc payment) the next page asked for the TIP. That is pretty bold! However they gave me a bill that stated tip would be added to parties of six or more and they still added it to our party of 2 as well as a 5% for kitchen. They did not tell us but I read it and saw it was added. I also ordered an iced tea. Most places give free refills but not here and the cup was so small. The ribs were absolutely cooked to perfects melting in your mouth right off the bone. We got the meat feast for two. It was 1/4 chicken, half rack ribs and beef brisket with Mac and cheese, beans and coleslaw. Service is quick and the food by far the best we ever had! read more

The pros - the food was great! We had the Smokehouse special for 2. That included beef brisket, pork ribs and chicken. The brisket was really tender as were the ribs! The chicken was a little dry. The service was great but we also got there right when it opened at 5 PM. The cons - [[HIGHLIGHT]]we were second in line when it opened and of course, the restaurant was totally empty. Most of the tables had Reserve signs on them. We got a cramped little table in the center that the hostess said was the only one not reserved or we could sit at the bar and have dinner.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]By the time we left, there were several tables that still had Reserve signs on them and they were still empty.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They gave you nice, heavy, silverware, nice cloth napkins, nice heavy plates and - silly plastic glasses for water.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They give you a little iPad looking thing to pay. All of the charges looked accurate so we hit continue left a nice 20% tip and asked to have our receipt printed. I had read the other yelp review that said that there were added charges and I wanted to see if they did that to us as well. They did! There was a 5% added tax for kitchen help. It did not show up on the charges prior to getting the printed receipt. I too strongly object to this. It's one thing if they had put it on the list of charges prior to you deciding on your tip and prior to you paying the total amount. There was no way to opt out of it gracefully other than to tell the server or manager, you weren't going to pay it. Also, call ahead to make sure they're open. We actually came a long way on bicycle to have an early dinner at 4 o'clock and you bike back home by dark. On their website & on Apple Maps and even on a board above their front door- it all shows they're open!! But they are not open for several hours between lunch and dinner. read more
