Got to say I was impressed with the place. Stopped in the way to Dallas and had looked at getting the CFS since I heard it was good. Got there and guess what the special was...yep CFS. I noticed a pleasant smell when I walked in, the kind you get when you go into an old tobacco wear house or a cigar shop. I had the mushroom burger with onion rings. The burger was very tasty and was cooked well. The onion rings were seasoned well and were not greasy. I stole a bite of my wife's chicken fried steak and the batter was good and the gravy added to the flavor. We split a coconut cream pie. It was very good and had real meringue on top. My waitress was very attentive and kept my glass of Diet Coke filled. Very glad we made this stop and will plan to visit this place again. read more

The hamburger buns are soggy and fall apart while eating, onion rings taste stale. You servers treat the bussers and food runners very rudely. I find this behavior non professional. The only thing that is positive is the decorum. read more

If you are traveling on I20 between Ft. Worth and Abilene, this is a great mid-way place to stop for some really good "home cooking". They have daily specials and the food and service was great. Our table ordered the chicken fried steak, meatloaf and catfish. No complaints, we all liked our meal! I noticed the burgers at the table next to us and they looked really good as well. read more

We travel for work, my husband and I drive a truck together. So....we eat all over the country, we enjoy sampling local, non-chain restaurants. Sometimes you find a gem while scratching around. Near Mingus, TX we found the Smokestack Restaurant. It was the general store for now ghost town Thurber, TX, built in 1890! Cool old brick building. The staff was polite, pleasant, Texas of course. My husband had a grilled porkchop, he said it was great. He did not finish it however. I fed him just some of my chicken fried steak. It was delicious. I mean perhaps best I've had! Side items were good, loaded baked potato has everything. Texas Toothpicks string onions and jalapeños, battered and fried....super! This time venturing off the beaten path led us to a neat place, with well prepared food. If we come back this way, we will definitely stop again. read more

The food was good. I had the jalapeño burger and onion rings. Both were tasty. The service left a lot to be desired. My drink was refilled only after I asked for one and despite my plan to order dessert the waitress brought my check and never even asked if I wanted anything else. OK, not really a lot of choices in this area, but my wife and I wandered in here tonight and it was a delight. The building is a repurposed mercantile, right off of I20 and has a nice atmosphere. I had the Jalapeño burger and my wife had the grilled chicken sandwich. Both were outstanding. Our waitress was funny and knowledgeable and gave us great recommendations. They have a good selection of packaged craft beers and the usual selection of domestics on tap. My wife had the house Cabernet and she enjoyed it enough to get a second pour. I'm not sure why you would be in this area, but you can't go wrong with a stop here. read more

The Chicken tenders are amazing!! My mom and I went here for a late lunch and decided we would split their Chicken tender plate and the Smokestack Spuds. It was delicious! The Smokestack Spuds are stuffed tator tots with cheese and jalapeños, they were cooked just right and brought out with ranch. The chicken tenders are huge!! Served with a dipping sauce of your choice, we also got french fries and fried okra. Everything was generously portioned. The employees were so kind and attentive, also very very polite. This place is like a ghost town! No, it's literally a ghost town - Population 5. Thurber was a thriving coal-mining town of about 10,000 from the late 1800's up until the end of the Great Depression. They also have tons of other goodies on the menu like chicken livers, catfish, burgers, sandwiches, steaks, liver and onions, salads, cobblers, and pies. If you're driving by this place and see the smokestack, please do yourself a favor and drop by just for the touch of history. They also have a museum on site as well. The only negative in my opinion is that they allow cigarette smoking in the restaurant, but I guess it's their town and they can make up the rules. This is a must stop place! Good food and a great historical spot. I had the hot meatloaf sandwich with fried okra. The sandwich had a huge slice of meatloaf that was moist and flavorful. My husband had the chicken mushroom sandwich on rye with onion rings. His sandwich had a full chicken breast half and the rye bread was a nice twist. The restaurant is the old mercantile building. Wonderful little restaurant! Portions are big enough to share, especially since they have wonderful pie! Mom and I split a mushroom , swiss chicken sandwich on the most wonderful sourdough bun! I'm visiting my parents in Stephenville for my Spring Break. I'm at SFA in Nacogdoches. We just had lunch at the Smokestack. My dad does HVAC for Tarleton and has to go out to Thurber sometimes so he knew about and has been there before. We were going to go to Mary's at first but when my dad said y'all offer a wheat bun and Mary's doesn't I was sold. I had weight loss surgery(LapBand) in 2009 and people's bands very on their quirks of what they will and will not tolerate, my intolerance is white flour! It will NOT go down, but wheat flour does. I of course still love hamburgers. It was really good, even though I only had like 2 bites! The only thing I didn't like was that the water in the sweet tea was kind of awful. But truthfully if that's what's bad you can't really complain, the food being good or bad is much more important! read more

I'd give 5 stars if the service had been better. First, the food was great. As well as the atmosphere. However the service was greatly lacking. We went after the lunch crowd and the place wasn't busy at all. Looks like they were either short staffed or didn't care, because the service was extremely slow. read more

Great restaurant. Happening on it by chance because the kids were hunger in the middle of nowhere. Saw that it had some good reviews on Yelp and saw several big rigs parked outside so I figured that it must be good. We were not disappointed. I got the catfish which was excellent. Seasoned just right and that is saying something since I am from Louisiana. My wife got a buffalo chicken sandwich which was tasty and huge. My son got a steak which was very good. My husband had a small chicken fried steak and it was plenty big and "The best chicken fried steak I've had in a long time." Their french fries were amazing!
