Stopped here on a road trip and it was a great meeting spot to eat and rest a while. The food wasn't anything amazing, but our groups' favorites were the fries (10/10!) and mocha cheesecake (tasted like a rolo). I was disappointed in the Mac being pretty bland. The sandwich was good since they had several great tasting barbecue sauces to add. Plenty to do here including an arcade room, gift/souvenir shop, pirate ship to climb on, and plenty of interesting metal statues. More like the Slow Pokey. Two simple sandwiches ordered TO GO took an hour. Nothing complicated about the order at all. Once we finally got our order, got in the car and then realized we actually had to make the sandwiches ourselves. They basically threw the ingredients into a styrofoam container, added packets of condiments in the to-go bag and that's it. This used to be our go to stop for eats whenever traveling in the area. It has really gone downhill. I had a mushroom Swiss burger. Menu states burgers as fresh, never frozen. Highlights include - An actual petting zoo - An arcade upstairs with an array of games - A pirate ship for kids to explore If you're on a road trip and need a place for your kids to run feral for a bit, this seems about as great a place you could possibly hope for. It is the embodiment of extra. I'm left wondering how and why this all came to be, and how it's sustainable. There's a story here. Anyway, the barbecue. We went on a Sunday and ordered takeout. The ribs were tough. The brisket was on the dry side. And it was there we arrived at the crossroads of expectations: as a standalone restaurant, our meal was objectively not great. The staff seemed nice enough, so I'm wondering/hoping if it's just Sunday afternoon inattention or something. So there's really two reactions to have. Option One: In this location, with the size of the kitchen and surrounding facilities, it seems like exactly the sort of hidden niche that you stumble into and end up having some of the best barbecue in your life. It could be symphonic, to the point of tragedy: It ends up so good that when you get home you have the overwhelming need to tell all your friends, but when you try to describe the experience no one quite believes you because it all sounds like a hallucinogenic fugue state: "We waited by the pirate ship that had landed inside, you could see the basketball games from the crow's nest and also there were llamas, maybe alpacas. I couldn't tell, it was from a distance, I didn't go to the zoo. Anyway, the cheesy corn was so good you have to try it." I mean, come on, would you believe you? "I don't know where this was, somewhere in Oklahoma. We turned off the interstate and it just appeared. Guanacos. They could have been guanacos." Your friends listen and smile politely each time, but you can tell they're indulging you. They eventually drift away. Years go by. Every subsequent meal you have for the rest of your life tries but doesn't recapture the euphoric delight from that one day long ago off a mysterious stretch of highway. You yourself begin to question whether it happened at all. Doesn't that sound amazing? So when we try the food and it doesn't result in long-term social isolation and the questioning of our own sanity, how can you help but be disappointed. Option Two: The food isn't the point, the overall atmosphere is. Complaining about the quality of barbecue here is as insightful as criticizing the pizza at Chuck E Cheese. There's a pirate ship and a goat pen, and a section with tee shirts that contain wry observations about marriage and bad drivers, how good could it realistically be? As with long road trips, it's never going to be great, but best to just find ways to enjoy the ride. So all this to say, it depends on your expectations. Good to keep them low, but I also think it's completely fair to want better from the kitchen. They appear to have the resources to make something amazing. It's just going to come down to execution on a given day. I hope they're able to tighten it up. In the meantime, enjoy the ride as best you can. read more

My wife and I went in a couple days ago and had the grilled pork chops, baked potatoes and homemade chili. Service was good and the waitress was friendly. Not a big negative, but the chops were barely over cooked. Overall the flavor was really good and the French fries were crispy, and the grilled bread with butter was absolutely amazing. Came here to eat after the OSU wrestling Dual on Sunday. There was 20+ in our group. We had one waitress to our table,so getting drinks and orders took a bit. Our server was super friendly and did make sure to fill our drinks and get all our orders right. The food was average. The portions were pretty big. The smokehouse salad was a little on the light side with the meat ( pulled pork) but overall it was a great meal. Nobody complained about their food or the service,so that is always a plus when dealing with big parties. The kids really enjoyed playing inside the boat and running around. The decor is pretty fun . OH FER CUTE This is an adorable truck stop/amusement center/restaurant/petting zoo in the middle of nowhere! It is sooo cute! However, it is extremely OLD. Which means it has character, but needs a deep deep cleaning. Lotta dust in there. Did I mention the cute gift shop? The sign outside said PORK BUTT SALAD. So I went into the restaurant to try it out. The sweet blond server was the only one working, and she was doing a heck of a job! She was polite, personable , articulate , efficient and cute all at the same time. Then BAMM, the restaurant filled up, and to go orders piled in. So I ordered a brisket sandwich instead, so I could eat it on the road, with ORs. Yummy rings! She had everything under control with a little food running from the gift shop gal. When I paid her, I told her if she was in Minnesota she would make a ton of money. She laughed and said So your saying I need to move? With a sly smile. Just a doll! Great service! Came in at 5:30, place filled up as we ate. I got the fish tacos. Tasty with lime, coleslaw, bbq and ranch. Hubby got two meat dinner with fries and Mac and cheese. Prices scared me but after we ate, it was worth it. For a two meat dinner $20, the fish tacos $14, two extra sides $3 each, and a kids meal $7, it was $55.13 after tax, before tip. Stopped here on a Wednesday evening and thought we'd try some food. I ordered a simple burger 1/2# burger. Daughter a 2 bbq meat plate. Burger was a bit over cooked. Charred and dry. Looks like they poked the middle of burger and let the juices out. The 2 meat plate of smoked turkey and pulled pork tasted okay but the portions were very small. Not a positive experience food-wise and thought the price was a bit on the high side for the quantity and quality of the food. Wish I would have taken a picture don't want bash a place if they had an off day. The waitress was nice. In the past we stopped for just snacks. We will do it again but just for the snacks. Honestly one of my favorite stops on the way between Wichita and Oklahoma. While I wouldn't write home about their BBQ as the bestest ever--it doesn't need to be that. Service and ambiance make up for it all. On 7/19/2024 or around that time (it was a Friday evening), we went to try out Smokey Pokey BBQ at the Cowboy Travel Plaza. We both ordered 2 rib dinners and the ribs were HORRIBLE and high-priced. The reason why the ribs were horrible, was because they were DAYS-OLD, at least 2 days and probably older. I couldn't believe they served food that was that old. You CAN'T HIDE the taste of several days-old ribs with rub or bbq sauce or anything for that matter, let alone 1 day-old, but this was absolutely the worst I've ever had. The barbeque beans and french fries were fine, the waitress was very helpful, the dining area was nice, but the meat was a disaster. I am not a bbq restaurant competitor or any kind of restaurant competitor trying to harm Smokey Pokey BBQ at the Cowboy Travel Plaza, I'm not somebody who got paid to write this review, I am a legitimate bbq customer who enjoys good bbq...but when you serve old meat like that, You Show Disrespect Towards Your Customers. I'm going to be honest. The BBQ is fine - good flavor, a little messy so better to eat in than on the road. But I've become a BBQ snob of sorts so I have to admit that I don't really like messy BBQ. I like great smoked meat that doesn't really need sauce to make it good. So this is just not my first choice, particularly if I am traveling. The service is great and friendly. The fries are slightly spicy (in a good way) but a little oversalted - definitely get water to drink. I do not like to leave negative reviews, but I am leaving this one in hopes that the owner is from Finland and believes boiled pork is BBQ. I wanted lemon in my tea but our server said they were out of lemon (0 for 1). I wanted to order a Smokey Spud but the server said they were out Smoked Spuds and I told she was 0 for 2. Then I got my Pulled Pork sandwich (0 for 3) but I did not have the heart to tell her since she was so sweet. The pork had no smoke ring, no bark, no hint of oak or pecan smoke taste, and not a waft of smoke. This pork butt had no dry rub and had not been brined in apple cider or dill pickle juice. It literally was placed in a pan covered with water and foil then placed in an oven and cooked low and slow. My old granny would have said "that is boiled meat not BBQ". This might have passed for BBQ 50 years ago, but these days every neighborhood has a smoke expert turning out good pork in his back yard. The owner needs to go down Hwy 51 on game day and checkout a few tailgaters to see what good/great pulled pork tastes like. This review got two stars based on the quality of the staff. read more

Came upon this place a couple years ago by accident... pleasant accident! They used to have steak fingers the main reason I fell in love with this place. Sadlly my last visit the steak fingers were off the menu. I'm so sad and disappointed because I had waited all the way from NC to OK for the steak fingers that I loved. I had the brisket chili and though I miss the steak fingers I was happy it was good chilii . Good flavor not too over powering with fake chili seasoning but not bland at all. It had well balanced flavor and came in a huge bowl. I wondered after ordering if possibly I shOuld have ordered an app or side but there was so much in the bowl I couldn't finish regretfully because it was so good I didn't want to not finish it. My favorite part of this place is the complimentary pickle bar... yes I said pickle bar. It's thick cut house made pickles that are SO sour and tart if you are a pickle lover you must have these they are phenomenal. For those who don't like sour they aLso offer bread and better, sweet heat, peppercinnis, and jalapeños. Their sodas and tea come in a souvenir plastic stadium cup which is a fun little treat considering this is a road side truck stop diner. This review is not about the restaurant off I-35 but the one at the OSU football venue. First of all I usually don't purchase food at sports events due to high volume, low quality of food. This place did not disappoint. The food was terrible. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, cost $15.00, which is very pricey. The bottom of bun was harder then rock, the top bun was soggy, only 2 very small slivers on top of the meat being burnt. I went back and they have me another sandwich. They have a very large seating area and we were able to sit down immediately, even at peak lunch time. I had a lunch with ribs, hot links, fries, and mac'n'cheese! The ribs were smoked to perfection and were falling off the bone. Literally. The mac and cheese was thick and creamy and was a pretty good amount. I did not leave hungry! The hot link was center split and cooked to a really good temp. They had a good heat, but not quite enough for my taste. Then again, I can be a heat freak. This was a stop on our recent trip. There is very little along this stretch of road so this seemed like an ok place to stop, get gas and food. The kids had a great time running around the "indoor pirate ship" and the restrooms were very clean which is always a plus on the road. My partner and I had the brisket while the kids had chicken strips and a hamburger. Personally, I thought the BBQ was poor. It was dry and did not have a good flavor to it, it was as if they didn't season the meat at all prior to cooking it. The sides on the other hand were very good. We had mashed potatoes, mixed veggies and green beans. They made up for the crappy brisket. The BBQ sauce and pickles were also killer. They have a pickle bar which allows you to sample all the pickles which are very, very well done. They offer several flavors. Same goes for the sauce, they have at least 3 or 4 flavors which we liked. The chicken strips were great but the burger seems like it might have been a frozen patty so I wasn't too impressed with that. We did have great service, our waitress was very attentive and nice. For 2 BBQ plates, a kids burger and kids chicken strips, it was a little over $50 and with tip, that brings it up to around $58. Totally not worth it for that price. I drive this stretch of road several times a year and doubt I will be back. If I could give 2 1/2 stars, I would. Very much on the fence of 2 or 3 stars, decided on the 2 because the whole point behind a BBQ place is the meat and that is where they missed the mark. read more
