I can't believe I forgot to review this last summer!! If you visit North Idaho you have to stop by this place for it's history, local color and just down right fun! It is a great place to go after being outdoors. We went hucklebuckin' up in the mountains close by and stopped by here for an ice cold Kokanee. This place is over a 100 years old and has a long history. It was a ...a... uh ... how do say....hmmmm..... a whore house. Unfortunately, because of the recent economy they had to shut that part of the business down. This is the type of place that is charming and hoking with out even trying. It is like stepping back in the past. This is a truly u nique one of kind place. It is a bar and restaurant. My uncle Ken said I had to try the Rocky Mountain Oysters... The food comes out and I get the "oysters." Took a bite and I said "it tastes like fish." My Uncle Ken said "What's wrong with you, give me a bite." He then said, "that tastes like fish!" Apparently, the waitress gave us the wrong order and we were eating fish! The fish fillets are somewhat similar looking to the oysters. That was worth a good laugh. I finally got the oysters and they were well - balls. I would say they were somewhat similar to calamari. I could never eat them again and not get upset. The food here is okay. Ice Cube said a Good Day is "a day with no barking from the dog, no smog and mama cooked a breakfast with no hog." I would say a good day is "picking huckleberries - going to the snake pit and washing down balls with ice cold beers" read more

Friendly, quick service. Very family friendly. Good selection of beer. Buffalo burger was dry - but that isn't unexpected. Recommend rainbow trout. Mashed potatoes with brown gravy was luke warm. Salad bar was fine. Huckleberry ice cream, which comes at the end of all meals, was fantastic. Ms. Pac Man and Donkey Kong are a plus. read more

This was a fun stop for lunch with the family while camping. If this were in town, it would be a 3-star place...nothing special...but it gets a bonus star for having good food at a reasonable price out here in the more rural area. Plus the atmosphere is cool! We had burgers, onion rings, fish and chips, beers...the usual pub stuff. Service was friendly and efficient, no complaints. I could see stopping here again if in the area...it's a great break from camp site food, and again, the atmosphere is cool and historical. I'd recommend they have a large patio or something to cater to the floaters...seems like a great opportunity to get some beers out to thirsty floaters! read more

While we really enjoyed our dinner of butterflied shrimp and some excellent beans this Saturday, we were once again disappointed that there was no handicap Porta-Potty as has been promised in the past. Come on Tom! I can't be the only one would appreciate an accessible bathroom. read more

We were in on Saturday night. Ordered dinner at 5:45 pm. Friends arrived at 6:50 and our food had not been served. They ordered and we were all served at 7:20 pm. We had to send two orders back to the kitchen for being cold. The one was especially gross, hot turkey sandwich and the gravy was refrigerator cold and the turkey was room temp. They fixed it by pouring hot gravy over it. I hope this was just an incredibly off night. We dropped $200 on dinner and it was one off the worst meals I have had in my life. PS they must have spilled the salt shaker in the brown gravy. The large chicken fried steak was about 2/3 the size of the one at the Cataldo Inn. read more

My husband and I tried Snake Pit again for breakfast and it was even worse than the last time. We both asked for over medium eggs and rec'd fried, hard eggs. Hash browns were extremely greasy. I asked for a biscuit and honey and the cook gave me an engish muffin. I asked the server why I got an english muffin and she said "Oh, I forgot to tell you we are out of biscuits." This was at 10:00 a.m. I asked what if I had ordered biscuits and gravy and she said the "new" cook would have probably given me english muffins because it's "only his second day as a cook." Well, it showed. I also asked for extremely crispy bacon and it was limp and under cooked. NEVER AGAIN will we be back. It's a shame because it used to be our favorite place to have breakfast. Have been going to the Snake Pit since the late 60's. My favorite stop in Northern Idaho. Joe, the owner, and the staff treat you like family. The food is great "comfort" food. The Huckleberry ice cream on a hot summer day, hits the spot. The perfect place to end a day of hiking or bike riding. Would be very sorry if this place ever were to close! read more

We heard this was the "local flavor" and that all tourists and locals alike had to try this place. I went with my local relatives and I think we could all agree it was definitely characteristic of Idaho. The menu had alot of "exotic" meals that you wouldn't find in other parts of the country like buffalo burgers and rocky mountain oysters (didn't venture far enough to try those). The decor was also very western feeling, with mounted heads and other stuffed animals everywhere. Had a huge fireplace and lots of handmade looking chairs. Only downside was the service was a bit lacking. I didn't get my drink until after I got my food, which took a while to make anyway. I ususally like friendly, personal staff, but when they get so laid back that their service suffers it kinda bums me out. It could have been a bad day, but I'll rate it on my one experience and upgrade it next year when I go back. read more

We wanted to see this historic restaurant and reviews said their food is good. Let me say their food is amazing! Very satisfied with the grilled Asiago cheese with house smoked pulled pork. My mom had chicken fried steak. It is grass fed beef and the gravy had lots of sausage. My husband had a more traditional breakfast with house smoked sausage. He gave me a bite and that was special order sausage. The people are friendly, the atmosphere is quirky but homey lodge. We are definitely coming back here. read more

The Snake Pit is a GREAT place to eat for both kids and adults! The menu has loads of things to choose from, excluding vegetarians. The beer selection will satisfy, the service is ALWAYS extremely friendly and nice, and the atmosphere is wonderful. I don't think I have ever visited another restaurant with more fun things all over the walls. There are miner's hats, dead animals, beer advertisements, old pictures, and all sorts of other fun items. The food ALWAYS leaves me full and completely satisfied too. I would recommend this place to EVERYONE passing through the area! read more

This place was a one of our stops during our bar hopping out in the sticks. Just had drinks there and some rocky mountain oysters. Never had the oysters before, but they were edible. We went, hoping for a great visit with friends and some good food. The interior decor immediate grabbed my attention as a rustic North Idaho culinary experience. We were seated by the friendly and helpful hostess. Two of our party of four were given plastic seats that had seen much better days. We swapped them out for steel framed ones. We were asked if we wanted something to drink and ordered a couple of beers. One of us received the wrong beer. Ordered a stout and received an IPA. Then was told that it would be 1.5 hours before we received our food if we ordered. Server was exceedingly honest and friendly. I've been dying to come here for years. We go floating on the river just north of this place all summer long and I have to drive out to the Silver Valley often for work. I finally stopped by and I can definitely say I wasn't disappointed. I ordered a Western Burger w/ buffalo chips and it was really good! The BBQ sauce was perfect and the burger was juicy and messy - like a good burger should be. I can't wait to come back and try something else. The chicken fried steak was the star of the meal - absolutely delicious - although all of the food we were served was wonderful. We had the pleasure of catching the owner and we had a nice conversation with him and the shift manager. This place has the best food. My Mom told me to stop and eat here. We were 5miles away driving from Spokane, WA back home to Denham Springs, LA. It was so cozy! The staff went above and beyond. I tried Huckleberry ice cream for the first time and it was excellent. My BBQ sandwich was better than any southern BBQ I've ever eatin! You have to try this place! By far the best food we are on our entire 36 hr trip back home. I'll be going back for sure. read more

Brisket was good, the ribs were sorta over "rubbed" with seasoning for my taste. I ordered broccolini which never made it to the table. Our appetizer of Idaho Nachos came with brisket (that was not ordered), but they made good on the replacement. Our server was friendly but did mess up on a couple things. This has been on my bookmark for 2 years and I'm so sad for my experience we drove 40 minutes for this. We finally had time to go without a kiddo on a Monday we missed breakfast and didn't come during a buffet. I went to order shrimp and grits which I was so excited for and was given a list of things I could not order wich was the top five things I wanted to along with six other items. That is alot to be out of which left you with choices of a burger or....a bacon burger. I ordered a burger (surprise) it was so soaked in blood that the bun was soaked red and so soggy I couldn't hold it and had to put 3 napkins in my plate to soak up the liquid. The restaurant was so cold that it was warmer outside and all the servers had jackets on. it was so cold we had to go to the truck and get our coat nobody wants to eat a meal while they are freezing that's why they are inside. The restaurant is way cool looking...but may I suggest the you pick chairs as the booths are shared back to back and you get to jerked around if you have a large person behind you. The reason for 3 stars is this....I feel it deserves a second chance on a buffet or breakfast time. Our waitress was lovely and amazing a young bleach blonde long hair with a face piercing she worked with urgency but had a genuine nice compassionate feel and smile. TSP is a gem on the river and along the Trail of the Couer d'Alenes. The food is plentiful and tasty with good size portions. The real treat is meeting the very friendly, kind server named Gerrie. Well me and my wife got their after 9:00am stairs covered in snow no one made a effort to remove snow from handrails or stairs.Came in sat down another table of people said how did we like the stairs ,and they told the help needed to be shoveled.We left after 10:00am I was just starting on stairs and my wife was close to bottom and fell .This could have been very serious! Came in on a Sunday after floating the Coeur d'Alene river. Not sure if we had a terrible server or a lazy server, since they can expect consistent business all summer long. NOTE: IF YOU SIT ON THE OUTSIDE PATIO, you MAY NOT order from the regular menu. This was explained to us after sitting and waiting with NO menus for 15 minutes. Asked server to be moved inside due to dietary restrictions. Server told us it was open seating, sat near the bar. Had to ask "hostess" for menus after sitting there for 10 minutes... also had to grab our own silverware. Our original server from outside was working our section yet took 25 minutes to acknowledge us... even had to ask her to refresh our waters. this is the 3rd time we have been here, but the very first time we have been basically ignored and left to serve ourselves. But the worst was the ROTTEN SPOILED mac n cheese. It was in a ramkon an I took 1 taste n it tasted like spoiled rotten moldy cheese. Couldn't get the awful taste out of my mouth. Barf!!! Then I got the smell. Ugh. This mac n cheese was badly spoiled, thankfully I only took a small bite thinking it was hot. We told our waitress, she said sorry n went to tell cooks. She said get some mac off buffett n assured us it was fresh. She never even took the spoiled stuff to the cooks. She took $3 off the bill. Just reopened with new owner. Closed quite a while after the last owner passed away. They cleaned everything but kept the same great historic atmosphere. The food is good too. We shared the chicken fried steak and it was more than enough for both of us. Neighboring table was saying how yummy the burger is. TL; DR First timer; would never return - extremely terrible service! Mediocre food at best. Not worth the drive from CdA. The rest of the story... Had reservations for a party of 7 @ 6pm. Was greeted at the door by a lady barking 'were full' at us. 'Oh hello, we have a reservation at 6'. Barking lady, 'Oh. It's over there in the corner!' At this point my cackles have been raised to say the least. Waited 20 minutes to be greeted and take our order. 15 minutes to get our drinks. Still no food at 7. How long does it take to cook three buggers and fries, three brisket sandwiches, and a kid's corn dog? Normally I'd be long gone, but it was a family dinner. Finally at 7:30, 1 1/2 hours after arriving, Food! Hockey puck burgers that had probably been cooking for the 1 1/2 we were waiting, frozen fries, 'spicy' beans that would have been too hot for Satan himself, and brisket dipped in grease. All the while we waited, 1/3 of the tables were eating their slop or waiting for plates at the iceberg lettuce bar, 1/3 were waiting for service debating if they should bail, and a 1/3 were empty waiting to be bussed - while there was a line out the door! Would have had a better dinner with frozen chicken nuggets from Costco. To be honest, it's a pretty cool atmosphere; could be something really nice. But, the actual restaurant part...steer clear if you expect to actually eat something my friends, steer clear. read more

It's definitely a must see if you are in the area. We ride the trail of the Coeur d Alene's and the restaurant is about 100 yards off the trail. A very old establishment with a mountain of history, but whoever owns the Snake Pit is not a wise person and doesn't treat the employees with much respect. We stopped in after riding 65 miles ready for water and a cold beer. The hostess seated us immediately and we noticed it was almost a full house. There were only 3 servers, 1 busser, bartender and the kitchen staff. Oh and the owner, but he didn't appear to be doing much except chatting with his pals. The servers were totally overwhelmed with the amount of tables they had to cover and the 1 busser was having a hard time as well. We waited over 15 minutes just to get water and then another 15 minutes to get a beer and when we gave our order we got worried that it might not get placed correctly or would come out cold. While we were drinking our beer we noticed other tables were getting the same insufficient service and several just got up and left. To our surprise the food was above average when it arrived to the table, but the server was so overcome by the volume of tables that he had to cover he couldn't even take time to offer another beer, because he had others waiting for him. We didn't blame the employees, but we do blame the owner for putting his people in this predicament. In the future we will probably skip the Snake Pit and stop somewhere else on the way home. read more

I've been to the Snake Pit twice. I almost gave the place two stars because the service was great the second time and my meal was taken off my bill because I wasn't satisfied with it. Still, the entrees I ordered both times left much to be desired and I just can't justify a second star. A few years back, the Snake Pit was featured on a Food Network show. Since I live about 75 miles from the place, a friend and I decided to make the trek and try it out. We waited an inordinate amount of time to order, around thirty minutes, then for our BBQ - about an hour. When it comes to real BBQ, it's not cook to order. Either they have it, or they don't. Found out later into the meal that they were slammed with HS graduation parties. Still, that doesn't excuse the pool of blood on my plate from the "BBQ" chicken I ordered. The chicken parts that were edible were exceedingly dry and tough. My friend and I decided to give the place another shot this last Saturday. A few things were different - there was a salad bar to start with and it was pretty good, the service was excellent and our meals came out quickly. We both ordered the BBQ chicken with "buffalo chips" (deep-fried potato slices). It went downhill from there. I went for the drumstick first. The meat was dry and stringy. The skin was limp and slippery. Next, I started in on a thigh, but not wanting to eat any more of the skin, I removed it. The thigh was also dry and stringy and I finished about half of it. Went onto the breast next after also removing the skin. Dug the fork in, pulled out some meat and took a bite. The meat was fully cooked this time (no pools of blood), but also refrigerator-cold. At this point it occurred to me that I was likely served yesterday's chicken inadequately warmed over and served at full price. To top it off, the "buffalo chips" were not served crispy-golden as the server suggested they would be, but were instead greasy and limp slices of potato. My friend ordered the same, but didn't end up with cold meat. Afterward, he characterized his meal as chicken jerky. I know how to make real BBQ - chicken, pulled pork, ribs, brisket, etc. It takes a while to make it right. A whole chicken requires about 120-150 minutes of cooking. Once it's done, it should be fall-off-the-bone tender. If done right, it should still be pretty tender the next day even after refrigeration and reheat, though the skin won't be so great at that point. I don't know if the Snake Pit smokes whole chickens and cuts the pieces apart or tries to smoke the individual pieces (really bad idea IMHO). If you're going to run a "BBQ" joint, you need to recognize the realities of BBQ - that you need to plan ahead for what you'll need to serve and cook it fresh each day. If you run out, you run out. If you make too much, you find something to do with the leftovers that doesn't involve reheating it and serving it at full price the next day (or later?). read more

Unfortunately the incredible building and scenery are as good as this restaurant gets. The food leaves a lot to be desired and you have to fight off cats for your seat inside the restaurant. Located a good distance away from just about anything, the snake pit is in an old cabin style building that will transport you back to the old west days. The scenery is amazing, a beautiful river is just across the street from the restaurant. This place highlights it's BBQ with a large section on the menu and an all you can eat night on Sundays. We got a mixture of the BBQ offerings and unfortunately it was disappointment all around. The ribs were fatty, and clearly over cooked which unfortunately was common among the dishes. The pulled pork was so over cooked it was dry and chewy, more like beef jerky than pulled pork. The sausage was also disappointing and the biscuits were burned. Out of 3 dishes all of them came out cold. The servers were friendly but generally disengaged. Now we get to move on to the cat, which apparently lives in the restaurant? Not my idea of a great dinner when I have a cat running around my feet. With so many fantastic restaurants in the area I would recommend passing on this one. read more

Extremely rude bartender, sent 2 drinks back because they were awful and still got charged for them, when asked to take them off our bill she rolled her eyes and adjusted our bill, both my husband and son got the wrong food and the salad bar was empty even after we asked several times if they could please refill it. read more

Showed up for the reservation after driving 90 minutes and was told by the indifferent man bun wearing ginger he didn't have a reservation under my name and if there was a reservation it would be in the book he gestured to. He only had one reservation that night and it would be an hour or more for a big table to clear out. The indifferent man bun wearing ginger proceeded to turn his back and never returned.
