I've been wanting to check out Hail Snail for some time thanks to Yelp Elite Jason C's review a few months back. They prepare light and fluffy vegan cinnamon roll bases that customers can customize with an assortment of toppings. And for the folks who have a difficult time picking out the right combo of toppings, there are a number of "predestined snails" that make all the right decisions for you. The Explorer (chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and graham) and the Lunchbox (strawberry sauce, peanut butter drizzle, and crushed Lay's potato chips) really stood out to me, so I ordered both to enjoy with my husband later that evening. I appreciate that the rolls aren't dense, overly moist, or too sweet. They are the perfect base for any assortment of toppings. And they're a great value, too, because I was able to enjoy two nights of dessert from a single roll. Considering how difficult it is to make good (and seemingly-healthy despite all the sugar) cinnamon rolls without dairy or eggs, these are fantastic. And not too pricy given the quality of the ingredients. I went with two different pre-selected options - the Planetarium (with strawberry sauce, sesame seeds, and freeze-dried apples) and the Quake (with banana, pistachios, carrot bacon, and mini chocolate chips); both were good, with standouts including the freeze-dried apples and the carrot bacon. It's a counter-service spot, with a few tables in the back and in the front. Service moves slow, mostly because I arrived at opening time and things needed to get warmed up. I am by no means vegan yet I have vegan friends and the occasional vegan guest that stays at my local Airbnb. I have been curious about this place, their quality, and if they are a business worth recommending to others. Wow!!! My daughter and I tried the cinnamon rolls with the royal purple icing and we shared some with another family and a 'boyfriend-in-law'. We ALL truly enjoyed them! I can in fact say these are the best cinnamon rolls I've tasted ever. They are soft, moist, and oh so yummy! The quality is much better than what I've had. This is a funky little roadside restaurant. The inside of the building is very small and doesn't really accommodate dining in, it's more like pick up and go. The clerk was nice and helpful in making selections especially for the kids. In the backyard though, there are several picnic tables and a couple of food carts that happened to be closed when we were there. The snails were large and delicious but a little on the pricey side. I've got my go-to spots for doughnuts in Portland and now I know this is my go-to spot for amazing cinnamon rolls! I took mom here and she got the bee which comes with pecans, maple cream, toasted coconut, and crushed newmans. I made my own and it had peanut butter, chocolate sauce, maple cream, toasted coconut, brownie, and cookie dough. Long story short, we both absolutely LOVED ours. The toppings were so delicious when eaten with the cinnamon roll, and the cinnamon itself was incredibly soft and cooked just right. I may have been slightly overzealous with toppings (I asked and our server said they didn't have a limit so you can put as many different ones as you like!) and could probably get away with not as much next time, but I really loved the peanut butter and brownie combination. But the cookie dough was tasty too! And so was the fresh toasted coconut! Awh hell, who am I kidding, you can never have *too much* toppings on a perfect tasting cinnamon like these :) I forgot to ask for a name but the server who was working at 11am (we got there about 10 minutes after they opened) on Saturday, September 5th was incredibly helpful and had an extremely friendly personality - exactly the kind of person you'd like to interact with when stopping in for a sweet treat. Overall, mom and I were very happy we stopped by. The cinnamon roll itself is already wonderful, but once you bite into that soft dough with your favorite toppings and have everything mingling in your mouth, you'll be thankful you decided to eat here! Been wanting to try this place for awhile and was in the area one day and finally stopped by! Smallish cafe with mainly outdoor seating. Ordered one regular snail and 5 small ones (both same price). They were delicious and not as heavy and sweet like your typical Cinnabon ones. They drizzle the purple vanilla icing on top of each one which is sooo cute. My mom loved as well. Look. We only got chocolate milk with whip cream and sprinkles because sadly, arriving after 3pm, they were sold out of everything sweet (and it was Mother's Day,) and only had Pizza Rolls on offer. Who I assume was the owner, working the restaurant, was SO incredibly kind. They told my two kids that they had a "snail scavenger hunt" and if they could find all 5 snails they'd get a crystal gem! Well they couldn't possibly have known, but my kids love BOTH crystals AND scavenger hunts. So both my kids were over the moon at the crystal, which was really pretty and not some cheap plastic crystal but a beautiful white crystal you'd but for $2-5 in a store! To me, it's always the small details, and KINDNESS, that add into a place being 5 stars. And the fact that they have great and unique products or food. Hail Snail is unique as they have all vegan sweet treats that no one locally has. They've got a super cute set up, easy parking, some outdoor picnic tables if you want to sit down and chow down and a scavenger hunt! How cool! After an afternoon of Bloody Mary's and savory food, a sticky sweet treat sounded amazing. I don't often crave sweet but I will 100% be going back because the kind of person who treats you so well and makes your KIDS feel special (on Mother's Day no less,) is the kind of business I want to support. I was exploding with joy when I heard that a gluten free and vegan cinnamon roll existed! My partner and I came out here to treat ourselves, it's in a cute small building with other goodies nearby (beer, food pods). The shop itself is small and therefore inherently mostly take-out. They had a vegan taco popup there which used a table or two that I'm guessing could fit a couple people pre-quarantine. Without the taco popup, it would be a spacious waiting area. It was super easy to order online and they texted me when they were out of something and if I can wait another 40 minutes for the next batch to come out. Such good communication! They all start with the basic cinnamon roll (everything is vegan) and their signature purple icing, then comes the toppings. The menu has a good selection of crazy named topping combinations, which are also insane. Just looking at the menu makes me sugar high. I had to keep with the basic bun with icing. I noted on the order that I wanted one bun with icing on the side so I can try saving it for later, and they wrapped it up for me! HOW NICE. The regular (gluten) roll was good, it had a nice chew/elasticity according to my partner and by my poking it. The gluten free one was really good for gluten free! It was a little crumbly but had good chew to it. You're better off shoving the gf bun straight into your mouth rather than trying to peel off pieces, getting icing and crumbs all over your fingers and pants... Lastly, find a spot where you can eat and then immediately pass out from a sugar coma. We fell asleep in a parked car. Good nap. read more

If you're reading this, it means you probably haven't been to Hail Snail yet. Boy, are you in for a treat! I almost wish I could go back and have my first amazing experience here all over again but, alas, time travel isn't very practical, and that would erase the memory of all the delicious snails I've had here since then. Hail Snail has the fluffiest, most magical cinnamon rolls I've ever had: not too dense, and ready to receive a whole pile of toppings. And they're vegan, in that awesome way where you wouldn't have known it if no one told you, and the vegans among us won't feel like they're settling for the lesser version of something. Same goes for gluten-free. I've tried to make gluten free cinnamon rolls over the years, as have family and friends and they always taste good, but they end up pretty hard and that's ok I guess. Or, it would be ok if there wasn't the superior option of Hail Snail. Fluffy, airy, gluten-free and vegan rolls. It's not just a dream; at Hail Snail, it's a reality! Toppings galore, with so many combinations to try, served up by friendly faces in an unassuming store front. They share a back patio with Arbor Beer Lodge, so if you're thinking your cinnamon roll would taste better with a beer and a side of disc golf, I have even better news for you. I've been dying to stop by this adorable snail themed pop-up for a month and finally did it this rainy morning. Hail Snail offers customizable vegan cinnamon buns with gluten free options too! My husband and I stopped in this morning to try a bun and were happy to meet the owners and check out the cute space. Branding is on point (snail shell = cinnamon roll) and the shop is small and clean. A medium sized roll is around $6 with toppings. Taste is amazing (we had maple cream with pecans) but for the price, I'd personally expect a bigger roll. The roll was beautifully crafted with our selections and the ingredients are definitely high quality. We devoured it and can't wait to go in again. While the price for a single roll is higher than I'd typically expect, we're happy to support a queer owned local business with a fun offering for the vegan and GF community. The best cinnamon roll I've ever had! The owners are super cool and friendly and they made me feel right at home. Their vegan chocolate and strawberry milks are so tasty, I almost cried. I will be definitely be coming regularly! Their store is super clean and hand sanitizer was available. Was so excited to find this little spot when I visited Portland in the summer! A queer-owned vegan cinnamon roll business with artisan rolls! They also use fair trade chocolate in their ingredients, so it's always quality and always sourced from workers that have fair wages and not slave or child labor. Hooray!
