We had reservations at 9:45am on a Sunday. We arrived right at 9:45 and were seated immediately...at the bar with a direct view of the kitchen. The dining room itself had lots of open tables, so we were a bit confused and asked to be moved to a table. This was no issue, but after we were seated at our new table it took us a while to be waited on or even spoken to by a waiter. Our waiter, Levi, was the BEST. He was so kind and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the restaurant. The 3 stars of this review are reflective of Levi, not the restaurant. The atmosphere itself is very hipster and staff just seemed angry to be there. No one was overly kind or even nice. We were met at the hostess stand with a cold shoulder and no one else seemed to be an exception. It did not have a welcoming environment. Maybe it was an off day. The food itself was underwhelming after the reviews we read for The Speckled Egg. The Lox bagel was extremely oily and hard to eat. The bagel, sourced from outside The Speckled Egg, was very good. The lox themselves are cured in house and are good. The Nester was..not great. The bread is full of seeds (I'm talking huge seeds. Pumpkin, sunflower, etc) and this is not disclosed on the menu. After attempting the crunchy nested egg, I decided to pass on eating the rest of it. The upside is, the salad on the side and bacon were very good. And the goat cheese was good quality so no complaints there. Overall, maybe it just wasn't my vibe or maybe it's personal preference. My family and I went to The Speckled Egg SSW for breakfast. I made a reservation the night before as I had family in town and know that this location is often busy. After arriving we were promptly seated. Our waitress came over to take our drink orders and asked us if we needed a minute. We said yes, of course. The waitress then came back a literal minute later and asked if we knew what we wanted. We asked again for a minute, and again, the waitress was back at our table about 60 seconds later. At this point she appeared impatient. I decided to just pick something and give the rest of the table a little time to decide. I chose the very first option on the breakfast menu which required you to choose a protein. I asked "Do you have sausage?" The waitress quickly replied, no eye contact, on her device "Yeah white, wheat, or sourdough?" Unsure if she had heard me I asked again "Do you have sausage?" She then stared directly at me, visibly annoyed, and said "Yeah, Im asking you about toast. White, Wheat or sourdough?" An awkward moment passed while she aggressivly stared at me. I completed my order and she then moved on to the rest of the table. When the food came, it was delivered by a kind young man and the food was perfect. I saw that the sausage was a sausage patty. Greasy food first thing in the morning upsets my stomach so I usually avoid sausage patties and opt for sausage links or something else altogether. Because of this I only had two eggs and toast for breakfast. Throughout breakfast our water was never refilled while we watched her pour water for the tables around us. After the table was cleared she asked if we needed anything else. I started to ask for the check when she interrupted me and asked someone else at the table if they wanted anything else, which they did not. No acknowledgement. I said again "I'll take the check when you have a chance." She glanced at me, gave a nod, then walked away. At this point the another person at my table stated "So rude". I still tipped 25% as everything else was very good. The food was cooked perfectly, the hosts were kind, and the young man who delivered our food was professional. I didn't want them to lose out because the waitress was short and unaccomadating to us. I understand how demanding restaurant work can be as I have also worked in that industry and other customer facing positions. It was hard for me to justify our experience as when we arrived about a third of the tables were empty and when we left about half of the tables were empty, all while being fully staffed. Love these restaurants but may think twice about coming to this location again. At the very least I hope Maura F. can exercise a little bit more patience with people just starting their day. read more

Anytime I want to impress someone who enjoys good coffee and breakfast foods, I take them here. Never had a bad meal at this location or the one downtown. Highly recommend any omelette they have on or chicken biscuit! read more

The steak was so tough and overcooked. biting and chewing caused me to feel like an animal in the wild who had to fight a pack of hyenas to get a dried up piece of meat that had been scorched by the desert sun. The coffee was so bitter it didn't make any sense how the brewing process would yield such a horrendous cup. No amount of cream or sugar could redeem it. Horrible! As someone young who came here for my aniversary I am appalled at how we were treated. First off we had a reservation at 10:45 and were sat at that time. It took our waiter approximatley 25 minutes to take our order then once we got the food we were bombarded with check-ins from the manager and server while eating. We were getting rushed. Then towards the end of our meal we were asked to leave becuase they needed the table for another party. We were there for maybe an hour and other tables around us were there for longer and allowed to stay. We were the youngest and I cant help but think that was a deciding factor. As someone who works in the service industry I am genuinley upset with how we were treated. The food was good and prices fair but the fact that we were rushed becuase of their poor planning is highly upsetting. I will not be going back if this is how they decide to treat paying customers. read more

It was almost a year ago now and I'm still baffled by the horrible breakfast I had here... I love breakfast and was super excited to try The Speckled Egg after hearing such good things. We had a reservation for New Year's Day, and this was only a short walk from our hotel. I was in the mood for a breakfast sandwich and there really wasn't a sandwich like I was looking for on the menu. The server suggested a breakfast that would include the items I wanted, and I could put it together as a sandwich... Great! that would work just fine. Unfortunately, it did not. First... I ordered broke yolk eggs. I honestly thought that meant I would get eggs where the yolk was broken and mostly cooked. When my eggs came, they were the most undercooked over easy eggs I've ever had. My dining partner explained that that's what broke yolk meant, that you could break the yolk... Not that it was already broken. I'm still baffled by this. I really don't understand, if I wanted over easy I would just ask for over easy. Second, the bread was burned and so hard I couldn't bite into it. I sent this back and got bread that was slightly less burned, but still too hard to bite into. I gave up on the bread. Third, I really wanted a veggie sausage. I generally like them better because they're more seasoned than the meat kind. But they didn't have any so I went ahead and got a meat sausage. It was the most unusual tasting sausage I've ever had and not in a good way. I'm the one that normally likes unusual food, but this just didn't taste good. The server was super nice and super helpful. In retrospect, I should've gotten Eggs Benedict (was it on the menu then?) This restaurant was amazing! When you walk in you are greeted by the very nice and accommodating staff. It's also very beautifully decorated and clean. The food was absolutely amazing. Went for a late breakfast on a Friday, the service was excellent! My friend got the French toast and I had the breakfast sandwich and home fries. Everything was delicious. The restaurant was clean and the commonplace coffee is next door so you're able to order any coffee drink and a full bar! I had the kombucha mimosa, highly recommended! read more

So happy I finally got to eat here! I always go to the Commonplace Coffee next door, but haven't had time to stay and eat breakfast. Our waiter (it was his 31st bday today) was one of the nicest and happiest people I've ever met. Everyone working there seems very passionate about the menu, sourcing of the ingredients from the local community, and customer service. Our waiter even went out of the way to make a fresh iced Earl Grey tea when they ran out. The strawberry French toast, the potatoes, and the tea were all fantastic. Cant wait to come back! The ambience was kind of crowded, but in a good hometown way. It wasn't overly loud so we could still hear each other speaking. The brunch was amazing everything we got tasted delicious and was huge. The bloody Mary's were amazing. That was the best bloody Mary I have ever had. Service was excellent! We were from out of town and our server gave us excellent advise on what to order!! First off, the food is excellent. The only thing I think this location needs to reconsider is their reservation-only seating on weekends. We ate here the first week they opened for my birthday. My sister made reservations due to not wanting to have to wait for a table since they were first opening and probably would be packed. This morning, I just woke up deciding I wanted to get breakfast from here, not even thinking about needing a reservation. I can understand having some tables for reservation but the whole restaurant is reservation only. Walk-ins can only sit at the counter and the bar. Today, I also had my mother with me and she has a bad hip so the bar and counter aren't really senior-friendly seating. The owner did mention they do this because they really hurt during the pandemic, but I think at this point that shouldn't be an excuse/reason since this is their second location and they seemed pretty busy. A few of the reserved tables were also empty while we ate, so if people don't show up for their reservation or if the reservation is for a certain time the table just sits empty. The owner and manager rectified the initial experience but more people need to be aware of this reservation-only seating policy on weekends if they are going to eat here and enjoy their dining experience. read more

There are better more deserving places in the SOUTHSIDE go to them. If you do make sure that you have all of your party when you arrive or you will have to stand around after you buy coffee. You cannot sit at the bar unless you are a 'walk in'. The host and management are not helpful and more than a little happy to tell you why you are wrong. That should never make it out of the kitchen to a table. The sever heard my dismay when she dropped the plate and took off. Coffee was never refilled because she vanished all throughout our meal. When I served as a waitress we always checked back if the order was correct and if anything additional needed. We placed our reservations for Southside yet when my first guests arrived before me, they did not have my reservation. They apologized profusely. Okay, I can get it. I am from a restaurant family. Yet we waited almost an hour for our food to arrive. One of my guests was in a matinee show and had to leave early. Mind you there were empty tables at the time. Again, they apologized. Now for a party of six and a $300 tab, I would expect better. The upside, the server was wonderful and accommodating yet the reservation was for six and they had place settings for five! To make it tongue in cheek, my sweetie received a message from their flagship restaurant stating " where are you?" A group of friends had brunch here. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated and very busy. Our server was great and handled our group of 11 with patience and attentiveness. My Bloody Mary was delicious and everyone enjoyed their food. They were gracious to allow us to bring in a birthday cake and help us serve it. I'll come back to try other things on the menu because I wasn't crazy about the goat cheese omelette but that's not their fault .
