It's not "close" to transit or in a particularly interesting part of town but that doesn't stop me from going there almost every week! For what the location lacks, the food makes up for. We really wanted Indian food, without making the drive to Devon to our usual spot so we found ourselves here. We ordered the chicken Briyani, chicken tikka masala, and okra dish. We ordered online from beyond menu. Everything except the tikka masala was inedible it was so spicy. We are not strangers to spice but this was the only flavor profile the dishes had. There is no option on beyond menu to adjust the spice level. We ordered the food and it came at 7pm, we have a newborn and didn't get around to eating it until 1030ish that night. The restaurant was already closed and we were unable to call them back. I had to wait until they reopened at 4 pm the next day. Upon calling the person on the phone stated they couldn't do anything for us, because we didn't call them back on the same day. I still have it sitting in my fridge as I type this and it's been a few days! She didn't offer any recourse, except that she will add our name to a list in the event that we order again... which that won't be happening. In edition to that the portion of food that we did receive was not worth the price. Disappointing,we really wanted to like this place since it has so many good reviews. read more

Best Indian food I've found close to downtown Chicago. We were staying near magnificent mile and were able to get delivery in a short time. Food was very flavorful and just the right amount of kick. They are not kidding with the name Spice Room! While most of our group could handle spicy, 2 of our party cannot. So we specifically asked for their dishes and our appetizer to be made mild. Didn't happen. In fact, one of our diners didn't even get her food for another 10 minutes after the rest of us were served. That's never ok. And a takeout order was placed in plenty of time for it to arrive by the end of our meal. That didn't happen either. We waited 20 minutes after we paid our check for that, even though our server got 3 reminders about it before we finished eating. We all really enjoyed the stare down of the group that was waiting for our table for those 20 minutes. Their food is quite delicious but it loses its luster when 2 diners can barely eat it and 1 of them had to wait for hers to even get there. On a 1-10 level of spice most dishes were in the 6+ range and the Chicken Chettinad was a full 9. Guess we'll stick to Rangoli with the same menu and better service. read more

We are Indian and have tried nearly every restaurant in Chicago so I was excited to see a new one pop up. Brought my parents from the suburbs. Fist off, super new that we missed it because there wasn't a sign outside. There's probably enough tables for 15 people. It was an intimate setting. We gave the owner some suggestions on maybe having some papad available since they didn't. They service was good and very responsive. Food came out in a timely fashion. The place is byob which we didn't know. Prices are not cheap but the servings are family style. He asked is the level of spice we wanted which was great but just beware! Even for us it was a little much but very tasty. Hopefully they can expand their menu because they only have kulfi as dessert but everything tastes great. I've been to Spice Room a number of times and the food is fantastic, however I carried out from SR on 3/25 an noticed I was missing a dish. I live a few miles away so I called, informed them of the issue and they said they would refund my the cost of the missing dish. I called two other times and they acknowledged they needed to do it and the manager would call when it's done. It's now six days later and I'm still waiting. When I order Iranian food, I know it's gonna be hot... unfortunately some places make it so hot that it overpowers they incredible flavors of Indian spices...but not here! It's all perfect!! Logan Square was lacking in Indian restaurants but finally that has been solved! The Spice Room is the best new addition to Armitage. The food was some of the best Indian I have had anywhere. Very vegetarian friendly with both appetizers and entrees. Definitely get the gobi Manchurian, samosas and the veg korma. In addition the the food, the service goes above and beyond. The waiter was extremely friendly and willing to help with suggestions of what to try. They will accommodate to everyone's liking of spice level. It's also a plus that it's BYOB! This is one of my favorite spots to get take out. I live super close and it is convenient, but I would honestly travel a distance to get this food! I have tried several menu items including 2 Keema Samosa, Garlic Naan, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Chicken Vindaloo. Every one has been delicious and super flavorful. If you are looking for something not as spicy, I would choose the butter chicken. I personally enjoyed all of these dishes because they are very flavorful and have the perfect amount of spice. The garlic naan is soo good and perfectly compliments any of the dishes. The portion sizes are very generous and we usually have leftovers for a day or two after ordering. The food reheats very well. My dad has surgery and as a side effect he cannot ha duke spice - esophagus issues, it physically hurts him. But he's an Indian man and loves his food, and on his 48th wedding anniversary during a pandemic, he wanted Indian food, plus my mom got a break from cooking. When he picked up the food, and brought it home, we were excited bc i talked all day about how delicious the food is and that even though we can't dine in, we still get a night off from cooking and can celebrate. Very solid choice for Indian food in the Logan area. We ordered butter chicken, lamb biryani and garlic naan. Food was delicious overall, generous portions - more than enough food for two hungry people. Butter chicken was rich with delicious tomatoey notes, and meat was tender. Lamb biryani was tasty and fragrant, if a bit spicy for our taste. Luckily it was served with a side of yogurt to neutralize the kick. We used to order from The Spice Room a lot. Lately, in my old age, spice hits me hard (this makes me really sad). We placed an order with them (our first in some time) and my partner realized immediately they didn't have a spice option available. He called and asked if it was possible to get our food mild and the person on the phone said that wasn't a problem. It came and was "easily on the higher side of medium" (this is my partner's description, as I know my taste buds aren't reliable when describing spice). I couldn't eat it at all, which sucked as food was delivered and I was searching the kitchen for something to eat. I know from the past, and could tell from the bites I had that the food was good tasting if you're fine with spice. We just really would have preferred them telling us they don't do mild, rather than delivering something that definitely wasn't. read more

Like Sky A. before me, I made a trip from the South Loop to check out The Spice Room. Service was great. Our water glasses kept getting refilled, which helped because the dishes had plenty of kick. The restaurant itself was also cute. The food was pretty good, but no better than other Indian restaurants around Chicago and definitely not worth a special trip. I came back here and had a much better culinary experience! The service was overall friendly and laid back. The older gentleman was excellent with the water refills. We ordered the veggie samosas and they were crispy and sooo fresh! The ginger flavor was really prominent. The chutneys were very fresh and it was affordable being $4 total for two large samosas. Having loved the Vegetarian Tikka Masala, we ordered the paneer butter masala for similar flavors but with paneer because I love paneer. We ordered it with extra spice and they definitely delivered on that front. I can handle spicy food but even I was needing those water refills. The sauce was perfection. It was creamy with tomato, peppers and onions, and firm chunks of paneer. I will definitely be ordering this again. Considering that we ordered a paneer dish, we wanted a less fattening dish so we ordered the Dal Makhani. I really liked their take on the Dal. Instead of just using lentils, they included kidney beans and the sauce was more tomato based than what I am used to. I really loved it, yet it was distinct from the tomato sauce that the paneer was served in. It was also very spicy as we ordered it with extra spice, but that did not take away from the flavor. I can't eat Indian food without a side of garlic naan, which was delicious. The garlic was generously applied on the naan. It was crispy and not too heavy. Both of the entrees came with rice, which was nice considering that you have to pay extra at other places sometimes. Spice Room will definitely be my go to Indian neighborhood spot. read more

In a nutshell: prices up, quantity and quality down. I've always enjoyed the food here and found it to be quite good. Not so much now. First off, the cooking oil needs to be changed. the Veggie Samosas tasted of old, overused oil, and did not have their usual flavor - not enjoyable. They have new menus with increased prices, for that the Lamb Tikka Masala, which comes in a very flavorful sauce, was just that, mostly sauce. There were maybe 8 small, small pieces of lamb in the dish, even less than the reduced amount of meat in the dish we had a week ago. The onion kulcha was about half of it's usual size, and did not have its usual good taste. It's a shame, because their food used to be some of the best Indian food I've experienced in Chicago. read more

This please is called "Spice Room", granted, but they also say they'll happily adapt the spice level to suit your taste. I'm yet to find this! I can take spice, this is BEYOND spicy! I fully appreciate that we're not in the UK, I appreciate they're adapting the food for American taste-buds but this leads me to believe that Americans have no taste-buds! The food is boring, it's just heat. There are non complex flavours at play, just pain! Their samosas are lovely, their aloo-paratha is one of the best I've ever eaten - I've eaten A LOT of aloo-paratha!! When you have a sit-in I recommend trying to sit in the area being serviced by the tall gentleman with a moustache, he's very friendly and gives good customer service, the other gentleman is....an experience. A fair comment would be that he's very business-like in his approach, he's just bit so hot on customer-service with regards to smiles, chat, and there have been only two occasions where I've had an issue with my order during a sit-in and both times were with him - he argued with me both times about what I'd ordered. There are three dishes I order on rotation - one of the mistakes was a paneer dish and I'm vegan! A small issue but he definitely is a force to be reckoned with! I can recommend this place because if you like HOT spicy food this is for you. We order from here infrequently, I live in hope that I can get through a meal without needing to drink two litres of water with the meal. Reasonable prices considering the location and they have lovely delivery drivers. read more

Genuinely, and I'm not kidding, one of the best meals I've ever eaten. Before Spice Room, I'd never tried Indian cuisine, and now I'm absolutely HOOKED. Usually when I pay $17 for butter chicken I'm able to get two to three meals out of it, but I didn't have enough for even a second plate tomorrow. Unfair labor practices? The wait staff does not get the tip you leave if you eat in, which I believe is illegal. Please ask the manager who the money will go to if you leave a tip, then hand directly to the server if possible! I tried to hand our server a cash tip and was told that the spice room kept all tip money, and that it could not be accepted by our server (from the server, nothing was posted about tipping being unacceptable). I was told that it had to be left on the table. I was confused and asked if tips were split by all front of house staff, and that was why.....but was told no, they did not receive any tip money. Only hourly wages. Our server stated that they had previously worked at another restaurant and did earn hourly wages plus tips, but this restaurant was different and they kept the money. The manager started watching closely after I had tried to hand our server the cash directly again. Our server looked very nervous about the situation. We decided to leave and contact the state of IL labor relations about the strange encounter. The food and service were very good, but I cannot support a restaurant that is cheating its employees out of earned income, and also deceiving patrons. If no tipping is allowed, it should be clearly posted. Otherwise it is stealing money patrons are intending for the servers. I had already compensated the restaurant for its services when I paid the bill, why would I hand over an extra $10 to the business for no additional goods or services? This is the best Indian place in the city. All of their food is excellent and it's a BYOB. If you haven't tried the mango chicken its a must try. If you expect good service and expect your dishes come out on time or properly spaced out, this is not the place for you. They're just not great at that concept. I cant tell you how many times I've thought "ughh where is this dish" BUT every time it comes out, it's soooo good I forget how riled up I was. It's our go-to Indian place. read more
