But lucky me, The Spotted Trotter was out at the Grant Park Farmers Market that I attended recently and I got to check them out irl and support. (I told the gentleman who was at the table why I hadn't been in yet and he did explain that there was an easier way to enter. Ooops.) He was also so patient with me and explained the offerings and how I could use them all. Their menu board was calling my name and although I didn't need to buy anything, we love supporting local, yes? Yes. They had so many delicious options. You simply can't beat their hot dogs and brats. One of my go tos for a cheap meal for myself, or a way to impress your friends at a bbq. They don't dress them up there. The quality and juiciness of their dogs is unparalleled. If I were them I would have a little hot dog and brat stand from 4-7 PM called Moreland Traffic dogs. Traffic gets so backed up here getting on the interstate. The smell alone will bring the customers inside while having delicious dawgs instead of standing in traffic. read more

Other reviewers claim they're expensive, and maybe they are, but the quality of the meats and the service is beyond reproach. If you're looking to make an impressive charcuterie board, this is the place to go. They also have the best duck breasts I've ever had, but they often sell out quickly, so you may want to call in advance to have them set some aside. I picked up a variety of meats for a charcuterie date night and the Pecan Fuet was my favorite by far! The flavor of the ground pecan powder was awesome. I would describe it as smooth and slightly tart. I wasn't as impressed with the Sujuk or the Chupacabra. I did a blind taste test with my lady using cured meats from the grocery store that were half the price and she chose the grocery store meat both times. The business is nice and clean on the inside and I would shop here again just for the Pecan Fuet... It was that good. They have a large selection of cured meats so grab a variety and hopefully you'll find something you like. read more

Stay away from the sausages! The Weiss wursts sold here are the opposite of the German sausages: they are spicy, dry, and very hard after boiling them for few minutes (see pictures). They ended up in the trash. What is called "Beer brat" are ok if you like a lot of pepper. Considering that each sausage costs more than $4 I was expecting a quality way higher than Publix (which has good sausages for a third of the price). Service is not great either: barely able to see the server behind all the stuff that is on the countertop. read more

The gentleman helping us a couple of Sundays ago was super friendly, helpful, and answered all of our questions. We grabbed a couple of steaks and they were delicious when we had it at our friend's house. It's a bit pricy but very good quality. They also sell other cool things like different herbs, seasonings, different flavored marshmallows, and a variety of jam/jelly. If you've dined around in Atlanta, chances are strong that you'd consumed some of The Spotted Trotters delicious meaty offerings. Picked up some sausages a while back and here are some thoughts. Andouille: A Louisiana favorite. Coarse-ground meadow-raised pork, with the perfect amount of heat. Smoked to perfection. Comments: Not too spicy the first few bites, but the heat builds. Perfect if you like zingy sausage. Knock-Braut: Traditional Brautwurst, made in the Knockwurst style using cream and the finest, local meadow-raised pork, instead of veal. Comments: Surprisingly ended up being my favorite of the three sausages. I was a bit skeptical at the idea of cream in your sausage but it adds a nice note of milkiness. Black Cherry & Pork: Port-macerated black cherries, garlic, and a bit of smoky pimenton. One of our best sellers and great on the grill. Comments: I've had this on the scrumptious Amarena pizza at Ammazza. It was pretty good by itself but needs the pizza backing it up! Prices are not exactly rock bottom since the sausages were around $12/pound (three or so make up a pound), but it's not like you're picking up gourmet prepared meats daily. But if you are, can we be friends? Parking was plentiful, and the guy working was patient and nice. Plus, gotta love an establishment that offers a Yelp check-in offer for 10% off your purchase. read more

These are just two of the super tasty items that I picked up for my non-pork charcuterie platter for Thanksgiving. Both items super reasonably priced and both were delicious. The store front is right off Moreland, but easy to miss if you don't drive slow. Parking in front is a little limited too. Inside they offer tons of fresh cured meats and an assortment of cheeses. They also have a shelf of different accompaniments like olives and garlic and chocolates. I love shopping local and this is a new go-to when entertaining! Go in, but don't go in hungry because you might spend more than you planned to. read more

Spotted Trotter has the best meat around town and when I saw best I mean it in both the sense of quality and ethics in their sourcing. Atlanta is fortunate to have them as there is very little like it around. I've had friends over a few times for grilling and everybody always asks where the sausages and burger meat come from. They have a fairly wide variety too. I was happy to learn recently that they are also now finally carrying chickens! BBQ'ed 2 Springer Mountain local pre-marinated chickens yesterday and they came out great; Moist and flavorful. While you'll probably pay less than $5/lb. at the chain grocery store for flavorless non-fresh chicken, you won't be supporting an alternative food chain which treats and kills animals more humanely. As others have mentioned, the butchers are also incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Yesterday Wesleyan let me sample some of their home-made delicious sweet southern jerky which I appreciated. They also change up their menu week to week and sometimes offer hard to find meats like duck and pork belly. I will definitely continue to support this business! read more

I am a fan of care and quality. I make a lot of my own food from scratch and I know how much work goes into it. And I believe that care and quality justifies a higher price. But I also hate pretentiousness and with any store that sells artisanal anything, there is a fine line and it seems to be really easy for a culture of snobbery to develop. The Spotted Trotter, at least every time I have gone, falls squarely on the side of quality and care over pretentiousness. I have never had an experience there in which I was not attended to with thoughtfulness and friendliness. And their meat is soooooooo good. I honestly can not recommend it more highly. read more

We asked if we could pick up the prime rib today, and they said yes. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the store today, there was no bone in prime rib. The guy at the store offered to sell us a bone out prime rib, but that's not what we ordered. The folks at the store were apologetic, but they offered no explanation or solution. Not only that, we were going to pick up some steaks for dinner and their selection was not what we've usually come to expect. This was a great butcher, but we won't be coming back. read more

This place is a not-so-hidden gem for cured meats and one of the best highlights of my trip to Atlanta. When I came by the shop, the gentleman at the counter came by and pulled out one of the butchers from the back to help me select the multitude of cuts they offer. They take the time to really know the local cheeses and meats they work with to offer wonderful cured and fermented products. Their housemade sausages never disappoint and have the most interesting flavor combinations. The flavors frequently change so if you find one you like, buy a lot and freeze them! They also have a terrific salami selection; many great restaurants in Atlanta feature their salamis on their charcuterie boards. This place is REALLY expensive. Throw away cuts of meat are priced like Filet. If you wanna pay $13 lb for Chuck & $9 lb for Ground, this is your spot. I tried and it was in fact, just chuck steak. No dry aging, nothing magical. The meat is perfectly fine and the guy behind the counter was at least as knowledgeable as a Kroger meat dept. employee (probably, I think). The Spotted Trotter produces the most exquisitely fine meat I've ever put in my mouth. I don't care how dirty that sounds. It's TRUE. The gentlemen behind the counter were warm and personable, happy to offer up samples and eager to talk about the various cuts for sale. (Jonathan and Brad? I hope I'm getting that right. They were both nice.) I also met Kevin, the chef. I ended up going home with the following: Nduja (a spicy spreadable sausage) Sorghum and black pepper salumi Petit salami snack stick Samples of their meat jerkys (southern stained and peppered umami) Sweet/Hot Italian sausage Everything was just fantastic. I can't rave about it enough. I cooked the Italian sausage my usual way, with homemade tomato gravy and spaghetti rigati. It was the best I've ever made. We've all seen Italian sausage in "hot" and "sweet" varieties, but never in the same batch. It was perfectly balanced; a little bit of heat, a little bit of sweet. The guys at Spotted Trotter have completely changed my thoughts on high-end packaged meats, charcuterie, great cheeses, and how all of these can become an artful arrangement. I've had the pleasure of experiencing their wonderful work at several events and have picked up many of their dried meats, beef jerky, and other items from around town at other vendors. The shop is just magical. Located right off of Hosea L Williams, really close to the middle school, with a great deal of parking out front. As soon as you walk in, the aroma of all things beef, pork, smoke, spice, age, and aromatic hits your nostrils. It's a wonderland of smells met with a wonderful array of things to look at in the deli case and on the giant TV with the day's menu. Both Kevin and Scott are great guys and will help you figure out exactly what you're in the mood for. They really have it all -- sausages, steaks, bacon, pork, chicken... you name it. They have tons of variety within each protein family, too. My recommendation would be to know what you'd like to prepare, whether grilling, roasting, what have you, and let the guys help you find what you're looking for. One of the places we tend to pick up some small items from is Ale Yeah in Decatur. They have a nice array of salamis and cheese to make a board to go along with your beer selections. The Spotted Trotter will change every way you've viewed high-end meats. Pick up their products around town at a farmer's market or at the shop. So good. read more

Heaven. . . . .I'm in Heaven! I've found the happiness that I seeeeeeek! Kevin has raised the bar on all meat period. If you love meat and you love to eat meat, you simply have to stop by the Spotted Trotter! Kevin and his beautiful wife are a wealth of knowledge, on breed, on preparation, on cheeses even! Store is clean and located on Hosea Williams next to Coan Middle school. Everything I've tasted has been amazeballs. The chorizo, the hot dogs ( you will never be able to stomach a Nathans or Hebrew national again), the salami, the BACON! All Amazeballs. And yes, the prices are steeper than what you'd find at publix, so if you want tasteless, hormone infused meat from antartica, by all means continue to buy your meat at the mega stores. But if you love flavor, and are willing to pay for local humanly raised meat without all the chemicals and crap, then this is the place for you! Now if you will excuse me, I have to go eat another hot dog. Judge away! P.S. I'm new to the area and have been looking for a meat market or store to get beef jerky at. I found this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try. I waited in line for about 15 min to taste test the 2 different jerkys they sell. (only one person in fount of me, but the 2 people behind the counter were both helping that 1 customer) Finally one of the guys came over to help us. He was very nice and gave both my mother and I a taste test. Unfortunately both of the beef jerkys were terrible. Everybody has different tastes, but neither my mom or I liked the meat there. And at about $26 a lbs...I would need to really love it to get it. So while some might like this place...it's not for me. Better luck to the next person! read more

Finally got to check this place out yesterday, after having it bookmarked for months! First off, the dry aged rib eyes.. They carry it in one big slab & slice of your individual steaks based on thickness required. These steaks had amazing flavor, cooked them with a little coarse sea salt & fresh ground pepper, no need for a sauce, topping etc. They melt in your mouth & the meat has an abundance of flavor on it's own. Yes, it's a little pricey per pound, but damn is it good! We also each got a bacon & gruyere crepinette, also delicious. The young man working there, Luke, gave us instructions on how to cook them & they came out perfect. The smell when we opened the oven made me drool with excitement, I can't wait to try the other ones they make! We wanted to get some more items, but all of a sudden the small storefront was packed with 2 more families. We offered to step to the side & let them order so we wouldn't be rushed & could ask more questions, but they weren't going for it. I quickly asked for a few ounces of lomo (which angered the guys who refused to cut us in line), and I'm so glad I did. It was awesome! It was cured perfectly and the taste pretty much brought tears to my eyes. I sat on my couch savoring each bite & kicking myself for only buying 4oz. We can't wait to go back, hopefully next time we won't be so rushed by other patrons, as we'd really like to explore the charcuterie & cheese selections a bit more! read more

The only reason I can't give this place five stars was the miserable man behind the counter. He sassed me when I asked questions, was purposefully vague, and very reluctant to help in any productive way. I'm by no means a salumi-pro, and I definitely got the vibe that he didn't want me to be a part of his elite dried-meat-club. That being said, it's a very cute tiny place and the meats we did manage to get (had he been helpful I'm sure we would have bought more) were very good. The free jerky from the scoutmob was awesome, and we tried some chorizo and hanger steak (which may or may not have been grassfed? Upon inquiring, Mean Meat Man's only response was "it's natural"). I live close by, and everything I've ever tried from here has been AWESOME!!! I've had the dry age ribeyes, strips, and hanger steaks. They'll cut them to your specifications, and they grill up perfectly. The sausages are awesome, and the variety they have is impressive; Italian sweet & hot, lamb merguez, rabbit boudin, chorizo, andouille (and those are just the staples, menu changes weekly). The salumi is also fantastic. Everything they do is top notch, all the guys that work in the store are super-friendly and knowledgeable. Love, love this place. I have had their meat at Deckard's, and a friend cooked a meal for me recently with their rabbit boudin. I had to check the place out. The owners are incredibly nice folks. They gave us samples of 4 or 5 things in the case. The jerky is great. It tastes like a cow. Try the tasso as well. I purchased a couple of ribeye steaks, they are waiting to be cooked. But they are locally produced and dry-aged. They definitely look better than any steaks I've purchased in recent memory in the city. read more

Lots of fun for carnivores, this is a fabulous place to buy meat. It's nice to know when my purchases have impact on local people, small shops, and regional farms. I feel really good about the meat served here and everything I've bought has been super tasty. I've tried the following: Brasstown steaks, North Carolina cheeses, rabbit boudin, pork belly wrapped rabbit crepinettes, bacon, andouille (best ever!), chorizo, jerky, and... (drumroll!) ground beef with bacon trimmings. The latter made for the baconiest burger I've made. Not only is every single thing I've gotten over at the Grant Park Farmer's Market or their cute little store absolutely amazing, the guys behind the counter are extremely nice. I came away very impressed by my first visit to this place. The Genoa Salami was delicious and as fine as any I've had on a pricey antipasto plate. The beef jerky was awesome. Like something you stumble upon in a country store on a road trip, and you feel sad you can't go back for more. Lastly, the fegatelli was something new for me, but it was one of the tastiest meat snacks I've ever had. Because the place is small and no-frills, it helps to have an idea of what you want. But the proprietors couldn't be friendlier. Seriously some of the nicest people. It is a little pricey, but worth the splurge if you're serious about getting some good meat products. read more

Kevin, you are my bacon brother!! I have been going here since they opened and always find the best, rarest cuts of meat and the biggest selection of fresh sausages made daily. I have day dreams about the dry salami, crepinettes, Kentucky bourbon jerky and...wait for it... cured pork belly that has such a smoky sweet flavor when it hits your lips, you think you've just experienced your first kiss all over again! I have loved every recipe Kevin suggests and find myself going in even if I don't need anything. I can't wait for the new cuts coming for the holidays. Great product. Gumpy people. I go out of my way to shop local, pay extra for quality products like their fantastic meats and navigate their treacherous parking lot off Moreland. I've met Brad at Decatur and Grant Park Farmer's Markets and John in the store. They have both been extremely patient and courteous when discussing their products. The meat is of the highest caliber. This is probably the best sausage I've ever had. Things I have tried: Chorizo Lamb Merguez Brandy Boudin Salchichon del Diablo Black Pepper Pork Toulouse Smoked Whole Chicken The chorizo and the lamb merguez have been my favorites so far. Chorizo seasoning is usually a winner for me and their blend is on the mild side but allows you to enjoy the quality of the pork. You can't really go wrong here. It's definitely not cheap, so start small with something you know you will like such as a few links of lamb or the new burger mix they came out with containing a special mix of brisket, chuck, and pork belly. read more
