Then one day this summer I was walking out of a downtown bagel shop when I was drawn to the sound of great music filling the street from the next block down. It's got a very comfortable feel. At least in part because they have a couch! The couch sits behind a ew rows of chairs that all face a small stage at the back of the store. The owner's connections allow him to bring in a wide range of artists that wouldn't normally come to Owatonna to do an intimate show. A couple other locations have been used when a larger venue was need. Back in June, I attended a Prince tribute performance (Nothing Compares 2P) here and neither the venue nor the music disappointed. The layout is great; starting with an elevated staged and just below that is a dance floor and beyond that area is seating (tables/chairs). There are great views of the stage from mostly anywhere in the space and most importantly, the sound system was on point. Because of demand, for this performance, the dance floor was converted to seating and while understandable, other than in your seat, it made dancing virtually nonexistent. So much so that if someone stood up to dance at their table, the staff working the event would quickly swoop in ask them to be seated so as not to block the view of the people behind them. While relatively large, there is a single bar which was well-stocked and staffed when I was there. I am not sure if it the norm, but on the night I was there they had a $20 minimum for credit card use. Also, the only water they were serving was bottled (no cups of water) so be mindful of that. While this was my first visit to the Minnesota Music Café, it won't be the last. I will gladly return here for future performances.

The main room (aka Mattson Room) has a great wood dance floor and you'll see things happening here in the afternoon (line dancing, square dancing, etc) and then bands rocking out in the evening. The 2nd room, is the medium size room. Here too I've seen all sorts of great bands play and it too has room to throw down your dance moves or just rock out. The 3rd room. Wow. This room is tiny and it is where the metal bands play. It is loud and it'll melt your face. They also offer food and drinks are way cheap. We'll come here to watch Vikings games. They have both a kitchen that offers salads and burgers, and the traditional bar frozen pizza. You're not getting a Heggies here but you will get a Jakeeno's. In the Twin Cities, this is the only place I know serving up this variety. You need a place to watch a Vikes game or the Wild? This is the place. Drink specials during Vikes games too!

Myself and my date was a witness to his behavior that sprung out of control! He was getting too fresh with my Sister that kept pushing his hands away! He kept using cuss words! And yelling where's that bartender? And I would say to him if you want a drink? Go to the bar yourself these two bartenders have been working so hard in this heat all day long!! Well he didn't like that and started screaming at me! I then told the man that it's not the bartenders job to come to the table .. It's his responsibility to go ask for his own drink of choice, He grew more angry at me for no reason then he got our bartender Joy involved and was making things up that I had never said? I don't even know this man.. My Sister was just texting with him for a couple months on some date site.. And asked him if he wanted to meet her.. He came to the bar and seemed really hyper.. My Sister.. my date and I were still very respectful and nice to the man until he sprung out of control, And because all of that took place my Sister, date and I were asked to leave because Joy the bartender didn't want any more loudness.. We respected that and I was about to go get my Sister and date and let them know that we have to leave the bar .. and just when I was about to go get my Sister at our table... That man came back to see my Sister at the table! I thought that security asked him to leave? But he came back to to try to talk to my Sister.. I wasn't at the table so I didn't hear what he had said, Neither did my Sister or my date because he was screaming! When that man had walked away from the table he came right up to me real close and looked like he was very angry.. I didn't say anything and I went to our table and took my Sister by the hand and walked out the door.. I can't believe the man that started the feud wasn't asked to leave also? It was a very sad and shocking night for my Sister, My Date and I .. We never have been treated so disrespectfully ever at any place of business!!
