The lines get long pretty quickly on the weekends but the staff is so quick that people are in and out even quicker. The front bar seating is first come first serve but we opted to get alternative seating because it was too cold to sit by the door. Onto the food. The menu is pretty typical breakfast foods and different combinations for indecisive individuals. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. It consisted of sausage gravy and I was surprised at how rich it was. I absolutely enjoyed it but halfway in I couldn't finish it because the gravy was just too rich for me. I'd definitely suggest saving half for later. My friend got 2 blueberry pancakes, sausage, bacon, and eggs. They said they enjoyed it. So I'd say you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Our whole visit was about half an hour, most of which was standing in line for a table. Food comes out pretty fast. In addition to speedy service, they are pretty friendly. This is my spot. Every town needs a place you can go milk many cups of coffee and get good, well-executed and fairly priced breakfast and lunch staples. Don't go in expecting a hoity-toity suburban brunch place. There are plenty other places in the valley that are meant for that. Standouts are the homemade corned beef hash, eggs Benedict and eggs Duchess (tomato and bacon Benedict instead of ham), and the homemade banana bread fresh toast. For something extra decadent, go for the biscuits and sausage gravy. Like 99% of breakfast joints, they suffer from non-crispy homefries. If you order a muffin, ask them to grill it for you. They'll cut it in half and toast each side on the grill. This seems to be a very New England thing to do with muffins, but in case you're passing by and don't know, now you do. For lunch (weekdays and non-holidays only), they do grilled sandwiches well. Toasty and melty. Yum. They do most soups well, too. The turkey chili is better than the normal chili, for whatever reason. Some times they have more dinner-ish items on the lunch specials menu. Turkey dinner is nice and one time they did a good roasted pork dish. The specials are more expensive on the weekends, so if you sense a price disparity between visits, that's likely why. The regular menu stays the same price. read more

Important. The "homemade hash" is a breakfast special that is run often. The standard hash in the menu is not the homemade hash. That is why some people are raving about the hash and others are sayings it's canned. They are both correct. You have to ask if the homemade is available. Very good diner. Walked in and wanted to sit at the bar but my husband and i were ushered to a table near a window. The waitress asked coffee? and my husband said yes and she brought 2 out a few mins later. I'm 6 months pregnant and can't have coffee, and we told her sorry, but we had only asked for one. I asked for a water which was never brought out. About 5 mins later, she looped back around to take our order. I had blueberry pancakes, sausage, bacon, and eggs. Still no water. I asked a different server for a water and they didnt bring me one- I guess they just let the waitress know. I actually went out to the car and grabbed a bottle of water that I had been drinking earlier in the day to drink with my meal. I felt shunned for her mistake in bringing coffee to a pregnant lady that didnt order one. As for the food, the pancakes were completely undercooked. It looked like the person cooking forgot it had blueberries in it and threw them in after it had started cooking because they were all plopped in the center and not connected to the rest of the pancake. They were also small, frozen blueberries, so I ended up just eating around the blueberry pile in the center. The hubs ordered ham, eggs, toast, and hashbrowns, and his rye toast was probably the best thing out of our two dishes. The waitress brought us our check and never returned. Meal came to about $19. I saw her grab signed credit card slips from tables before folks had left (rude!) so it's possible that her shift was over and she left for the day. After a 10 min wait for her to come back to us, we ended up leaving cash on the table and walking out. Although confusing at first, their "cold coffee, bad food, lousy service" logo actually makes a lot more sense to me after dining here. Definitely won't be giving this place another shot. read more

I went to Stables yesterday for a late breakfast and sat at the counter. I was disappointed based on the expectations from the reviews on Yelp. I ordered: 3 eggs over, home fries, cinnamon swirl bread, Corn Bread French Toast. The eggs were done right. The home fries (no thanks thumbs down !!) were cut up pieces of potato left on the griddle for 4 hrs and dried out, I would have enjoyed dehydrated more! No flavor, no seasoning added, & no onion or pepper bits that can make home fries a home run. The house made bread "cinnamon swirl" was a nice touch but I wasn't told when the bread choices were being offered that it was $1. more (don't like that). The corn bread french toast was nothing special just a slice of corn bread, under-dipped (soaked) in egg batter and griddled. With it being under dipped, it was much like plain old corn bread, just griddled and dry. I looked at the meals the folks to my right & left were eating and they looked OK, nothing special. Very Inexpensive, so yeah if you are on a budget go with expectations of average. Waitress was super super friendly and attentive despite not mentioning the up charge! read more

I didn't know The Stables was a sandwich 'shoppe'. For me it is the second best place in Amherst to get breakfast (right after Sully's). And it probably is for a lot of college students and locals, so the best advice I can give you is either go early or be prepared to wait. It's not a very big place so the line is usually smushed up in the doorway or behind the counter. But don't let it deter you; there is honey wheat toast at the end of that line and it's worth it. With your breakfast you can ask for their homemade bread; I'm partial to the honey wheat but there are usually a few more kinds that are equally good. Fans of french toast can choose from homemade bread, challah, or cornbread. And as expected, the bacon gets two thumbs up. read more

The hours are a bit odd as is the fact that a restaurant still exists in this area without accepting credit cards. They do have an ATM but honestly...make the extra effort. Another thing is the hours on weekends, given that this is located next to such large schools maybe staying open a bit later would be more desireable then closing around noon on the days that college kids have off. Besides that, the service is exceptional and the food is phenomenal. The only food that I didn't like were the grits but given that we are in MA I will forgive them of their sins there. This is the kind of place that everyone has in their home town or little corner of the world that is always reliable and the waitresses seem to be the friendliest on earth. It's like part of a script for a scene in a tv show or a movie. These places always serve reasonable food that reminds you of home cooking. The wife and I split some eggs, sausage, hash browns and their home made corn bread and banana nut bread. The home made breads definitely are a winner. The sausage was delicious too. This quaint roadside restaurant is Wonderful! It has counter and table service. The staff greeted us New Yorkers upon entering. Our waitress even indulged me when I asked why she pronounces her "R's" (as in pock for Park)! I ordered the Country Skillet and my food wasn't salty, and the bacon had a nice smoked flavor. My eggs were perfectly cooked. The red potatoes are their home fries, and they are creamy chunks of potatoes. They have homemade bread as well as regular. It was worth the up charge. We also ordered the Farmers Daughter which had the French toast that tasted like it had extra vanilla. Mmm! We split an order of sausage gravy and biscuits and when I traveled to NC last year, I thought that was the way it's done. Nope! This plate has gravy that didn't taste like a real flour component. This was creamy and Not sandy. The sausage were fresh and Smokey too! And it didn't have tiny bits. Theirs has nice size pieces of sausage. So even though I live two states south of here, if I come up this way, I'd definitely eat here again! And if You're in this area, look out for Stables, and get there early- because they close at 2pm! read more

This used to be my favorite place for breakfast in the Amherst area before I left town. The food here is amazing. It's fattening, filling and greasy; I believe we call that "homestyle cooking". The prices are horrifically cheap. I eat quite a bit and yet I can still get a full breakfast for $6 or less. They have a Hungry College Boy special and I've only known one man who was enough man (he's over 300 lbs) to stomach it all; that costs $10. The place is super busy though, so it does not get 5 stars from me. Yet the cost and the tastiness of the food makes it worthwhile if you can get there early. People tend to confuse quantity with quality. First visit was on a Saturday morning and the first thing to greet you is a handmade sign on both doors advising you are not to bring food or drink into the facility, really? Once inside, more handmade signs, one advising the dining area is for parties of two or more and you will not be seated until your entire party arrives and the final sign is it is a cash only establishment but they do provide a handy ATM, signed the management. So it began. She ordered a breakfast sandwich on toasted cinnamon swirl toast and it looked great, until she opened it up, I think it was a quail egg it was so small. My home fries, which I ordered well done and crispy were anything but, lackluster comes to mind but the cornbread toast was OK. We happened to be in the neighborhood and in a hurry the next day so we tried it again. Surprise, surprise, still no better. I had the scramble, described as 2 eggs scramble with bacon or sausage, home fries, onions and peppers and topped with melted cheese, which turned out to be a slice of American cheese, slowly melting. I am very disgusted with the service I received at this restaurant. Not only did I find one small black curly hair in my food, the next plate I received had one long brown hair also in my food. I was respectful and didn't cause a scene because I have been a waitress and know thats a stressful situation but I was charged for BOTH plates still. Let me be very clear, I'm fair with my reviews. I give everywhere a second chance and a benefit of the doubt. But in the two times I've ordered from The Stables I have been nothing, NOTHING, short of disgusted. The first time we ordered was purely for a pregnant coworker, whom chose the restaurant. We spent 50 dollars on a breakfast order that arrived two hours late, at exactly two when they close, and they had forgotten our pregnant workers food. She was the lucky one it turns out. Aside from my cold home fries, none of my co workers could even finish their own meals. Everything was cold, everything was inedible, and yet here I was giving it a second chance. I regret this. Again, an hour and a half late and stone cold. An omelet 96% full of cold wet spinach and nothing more, my chances have run dry. Make the drive to Blue Bonnet, Sylvester's, Jesus Christ pick a half eaten egg McMuffin out of the trash can behind your work, I'm past disappointment. What a tragedy. read more

I have never had better french toast in my life. The sour cream walnut french toast were tasty and I had to come back home and give them a two thumbs up rating. A five star rating for the french toast. My wife had a more normal breakfast eggs on an english muffin with bacon. It was good but nothing really special. A four rating for that meal. The atmosphere is interesting and I really like the counter area but there could be a little more space for eating. Highly recommended. At first I rated this five stars but I went back and had a good meal but not great. I guess the french toast was a special for the day.
