I have never had better french toast in my life. The sour cream walnut french toast were tasty and I had to come back home and give them a two thumbs up rating. A five star rating for the french toast. My wife had a more normal breakfast eggs on an english muffin with bacon. It was good but nothing really special. A four rating for that meal. The atmosphere is interesting and I really like the counter area but there could be a little more space for eating. Highly recommended. At first I rated this five stars but I went back and had a good meal but not great. I guess the french toast was a special for the day. If they want me to rate it five stars again bring back the french toast! read more

This place has amazing fresh baked bread, an affordable menu, and occasionally an awesome breakfast special (a crab eggs benny comes to mind...). As a result, it is usually pretty busy. While it might not get top marks for decor, all is forgiven after a bite of that molasses oat toast... Keep in mind that it's cash only. read more

Stables is okay. It's definitely not anything to rave about... Always a wait, currently in line this time for about 20 minutes still not at the front on a Saturday morning. Sucks that it's so small and you have to avoid making eye contact when you're standing right next to another table where they're eating. The kitchen is open however, so you get to see how many of the kitchen staff wipe their faces with their hands and wipe them on their shirts before going right back in making toast.... Ive worked food service, hands should be washed! Common courtesy. Their homemade hash is good, and the home fries are too, so if you do go try those. Since moving to Amherst I've been looking for a local spot that serves great food consistently and doesn't break the bank. Stables is it. The servers are always friendly and I can always find a seat at the counter and be in and out within 30 minutes. For parties larger than 2 the wait seems to be 10-15 minute minutes but you're able to wait inside. I always order the club breakfast and it's tons of food! The hazelnut coffee is really good so order it if it's available. Stables is a great find and its location in Hadley is convenient to everything. read more

Very disappointing.... corn beef hash is not homemade. There were no chunks of corn beef or fresh cut potatoes it honestly came from a can. I eat corn beef hash all the time & I can tell the difference. So it's a HUGE disappointment when they say homemade & it's not. As for the eggs benedict we had 3 orders at our table & all the eggs were over cooked. For a first timer there & reading all the hype & reviews about how great the "homemade" food was.... um... Yeah! Never again. Also why bake your own bread & not use it for your french toast? Makes you wonder what else is going on in there kitchen. read more

Stables is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the area. Every time I've gone, the service and food have both been good with great portions, and the prices are outstanding. By far my favorite meal there is the homemade cinnamon swirl french toast. My only complaint is that there isn't a great spot for the line to stand, but the waits are never very long, and it's really not an issue to worry about. read more

Stables doesn't aim too high; five stars would feel unnatural to it. The location isn't quaint or particularly convenient. You can't walk there from downtown anything. There's no evidence of an interior designer. But there's solid (read: sometimes greasy) diner fare at prices that won't make you regret going. The food is a little better than Miss Flo's and there's none of that inscrutable Miss Flo attitude. You don't have to sit in a train car with indigent dudes like at Kathy's. There's no anachronistic kitsch to tolerate like at the Route 9 Diner. You won't have to try to look good for the wait staff because they wouldn't care if you did. Unlike other PV staples like Elmer's or the Green Bean, Stables' menu doesn't emphasize local ingredients. Do you think the strawberries in your Valentine's Day french toast were picked locally last summer and frozen for the occasion? No, they weren't. But you chose to order them anyway, and Stables' locally grown wait staff didn't judge you. And they were sweet and delicious. read more

It's hard to mess up breakfast but Stables managed to do it. The wife said the cinnamon swirl french toast was okay, and the breakfast meats were passable. The real culprit, I think, was bad/old oil. Cash only breakfast on Rt. 9 with reasonable prices and great portions. Stables gets crowded during weekends around 10am, but you should be able to tell how long the wait is from the street. The Blizzard and AJ's Grilled Cheese are phenomenal options but the Farmer's Daughter and Starving College boy are sick too. read more

This place has cheap food and a nice country atmosphere and pleasant staff. I rate it as two stars because the food tastes aweful. It is greasy and has no flavor. The pancakes tastes like the hashbrowns tastes like the eggs. I will not be returning especially when I discovered a much nicer place aile down the road (Elson Coffee). read more

This was one of the worst "eating out" experiences I've had. My husband, daughter and I went out for lunch and breakfast here after having lived here for 4 years and were all put off by the food and service. No one said anything to us for a while when waiting to be seated, and then once we received service it was not very friendly. The food was awful; no one finished eating. The pancake my daughter got was not the worst, but very bland. It seemed as though they had their regulars there and wanted to keep it that way. I would NEVER go back. I had the best brunch here yesterday. The waiters/waitresses were super friendly. Took our orders promptly and it was out within 10 minutes. I got 2 eggs with home fries and bacon. Just wonderful. Had a lovely breakfast here. The service was great and the Omelette was delicious. The price was remarkably low for the quality of food. Luckily we went there when there wasn't a wait, but I could see it being quite crowded on a Saturday or Sunday morning. This is the BEST place for breakfast in the area hands down. Particularly good pancakes, waffles. All kinds of eggs and omelets and combos and benedicts and some specialty items. Very homey, great food, always busy and the service is excellent. Very efficient and attentive service with a SMILE. They are serving, clearing tables, pouring coffee, taking orders, etc like crazy but again -- you never feel rushed. They just have it down to a science! "Green Acres meets the Marines." LOL! My friend recommended this place a month back, and I remembered it this morning. Actually ran into him here, as I was sitting down, he was heading back to work. As I said to him, great food, well worth the praise he gave. A huge amount of food and a low price. Like I couldn't eat it all, amount. As a Chicopee native, having grown up on Jennifer's Kitchen and Manny's/Earlee Mug (Granby) this place is right up there with them. Small, cozy, homely. The staff is super friendly. They know their regular customers by name, and know about their family. Jeez, even now I'm reeling a little from an overload of food. We just ate at Stables this morning. This restaurant feels very comfortable and the food was delicious. It is a great value for the price and the service was quick and friendly. The only negative is it can get loud when parties are waiting to be seated. The waiter seemed to have a lot of people and I finished my coffee before he refilled it and he gave us our food and check immediately. It would have been nice to have someone going around just filling coffee. The food was great and service was okay. We just ate at Stables last week for the first time. It was very good. The food tasted fresh and it was well prepared. We both got eggs benedict and they were delicious. The hollandaise sauce had a good flavour and was not too tart and the coffee was decent. We will likely go there more now that we know. The proceedure for getting in to this little restaurant is a bit like waiting in line for lunch at school. You don't give your name, you just stand in line. That would be the only thing that I didn't like about it, but that probably wont change my mind about going there in future. read more
