There are a few brick and mortar fry bread places around Phoenix, but now of them feel as legit as getting it in what appears like someone's front yard in a native community. Dough was literally made that hour and freshly fried. Also, there was a pickle-slushee stand in the same place that serves this wild, local food oddity. Oh, my goodness! I'm glad I read the reviews before going -this place is in the desert on the reservation in a semi-remote area. Maps is reliable though and you are in the right place as noted by a handmade rudimentary sign declaring it so. If you are wanting fine dining or a refined experience, fuhgeddaboudit. If you want authentic, great food with friendly locals, then welcome! We were lucky as the reviews mention lines, we didn't wait long considering that it is made fresh. I was so excited to see that they serve poke cake which i have only ever seen as a homemade dessert. We took the food to go although there are little places to cop a squat on the little plot of land. I just wanted to savor it in the privacy of my home. We had the bean and cheese, a plain frybread and the green chile frybread. All delicious! As I walked up I was so excited to try it after seeing it on social media. However, as I approached, I greeted the man in a courteous manner and I was brushed off and he began to help the people behind me that clearly parked after me and walked up after me. I felt racially profiled. The place was dirty and the staff was rude. They didn't have any chile options as they said they were out. So, I ordered a fried bread (basically a sopapilla). It took 45 minutes for 1! It was cold and hard like it was old. There was trash everywhere. As a former New Mexican, I'm used to Native American stands on the side of the road with amazing food. But this one is a hard pass for me from now on. Save your money and time and go elsewhere! read more

I looked up the best Fry Bread in the Scottsdale area and this was the top rated so I just had to give it a try. Before we came to Arizona I kept raving about fry bread tacos to my husband and daughter so they were both anxious to try them. We got there around 11:30am on a Thursday, there were a couple of people there already but we were able to place our order and snag three seats (tree stumps) in the shade of the tree. I ordered the green chili combo taco, my husband had the red chili combo (combo means that it has the chili AND beans). My daughter had the hamburger taco. After we ordered they let us know that it was going to be a little bit of a wait because they still had to cut up all the greens, we didn't mind waiting at all. We all loved our food and it was worth whatever wait there was (although it was really short). It seemed like it was mostly locals that were coming up to order, which is a good thing in my book. I love supporting these type of businesses whether I am at home or traveling. Don't hesitate to stop here... you won't be sorry! read more

Where do I start? We hired The Stand food truck for a company event. I have to admit I was a nervous nelly as I had never catered with a food truck before and we had 200 people to feed. What an exceptional experience! The owner, Eva had to reassure me 10 time that there would be enough food and everyone would be happy. Well, she was wrong, everyone was thrilled. I have known the owners Cindy & Mitch for a few years now. It was an honor to get to know them and their daughters over the years and to see their business grow. From what started as a stay at home mom making traditional Native American tortillas called "Chumuth" became a bustling and booming food stand. On Indian reservations, food stands are very common and offer homemade delicacies that cannot be found in the city. In the Salt River Reservation, just east of the city of Scottsdale, is The Stand that was named by the community and frequent guests. Cindy & Mitch sell homemade Indian frybread and Chumuth (tortillas) topped or wrapped around red chili beef that was stewed all day, green chili beef that sings a song of savory spiciness; ground beef with shredded lettuce, tomatoes and shredded cheese. It's all fresh, it's all good and it's all hand made. And when I say "hand made" I MEAN hand made! The dough is made by hand, no mixers here! The pinto beans are sorted and stirred by hand, even the fresh toppings are cut and doled by hand. Recently, I had a true honor of taking the film crew of "Eden Eats" of the Cooking Channel to the Stand, and we made chumuth and red chili and it was so much fun! I hope you are inspired by the show and by this review to go about 5 minutes outside of Scottsdale to the intersection of school and school, Alma School & Indian School (just east of the 101) and try some authentic Native American food! To my yelpers I say: If you go - be sure to get there EARLY! The stand is only open from 11am - 4PM, but sometimes they run out of food. They are closed on weekends and sometimes they have breakfast burritos in the morning. Their parking lot is dirt, so expect to get your car a little dusty, and there is very limited seating. So be prepared to eat in the car. Just crank up the AC and try not to fall into a food coma... you might affixiate yourself! lol! read more

Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. From around 11:00 until after lunch. Bring cash. Need to eat in car or take with you. Really basic maybe 6 items and soda. OMG!! Best Green Chili I think I've ever eaten! I am a green chili junkie, always searching for that illusive perfect combination of flavor that is true to the pepper, and meat that is melt in your mouth tender with NO gristle or fat and expertly seasoned. Then there's the green chili sauce with excellent consistency and flavor that binds it all together, AND spicy but not overpowering. And to add to the culinary delight... it is presented in an awesome Indian fry bread wrap. I've tried green chili in the Chili Meccas of New Mexico, Colorado, California and of coarse Arizona, and made multiple attempts with various recipes at home... but the one I just ate tops them all. And, incredibly reasonably priced, as of this post only $6. The facility is funky, one of a kind cool, the person taking my order was very friendly and helpful. I ate it sitting in my truck, and I'm still sitting here cuz I wanted to be sure to support this awesome place before I forgot. Super cute little food place on the Rez! Very native to the area and they serve delicious fry bread! Only 20 minutes from Mesa and definitely worth the price. They do charge $1 if you want cheese on your fry bread and they also charge $1 if you want a to go box which is strange to me. They work with what they have so I believe they deserve 5 stars for mostly kind service and 10/10 delicious food. I did go home and eat my fry bread. There wasn't much but a sprinkle of cheese on my fry bread so I added more and it really enhanced the flavor. read more

I can't even begin to explain how amazing our experience was at The Stand. From the overall ambience to the service and then to the food, everything was great. The place is literally nothing more than a stand in what seems to be the middle of nowhere but it was fairly busy when we arrived. The guy taking our order was extremely friendly. While we were waiting for our food (which did take a little while) we chatted it up with regulars that were also waiting for their food. When our order arrived it was piping hot and the stand taco that I ordered took up the entire clamshell container that it was in. The fry bread was crispy yet soft and the beans and beef were seasoned extremely well. I'm so sad that we aren't local to the area because I want to eat here weekly now. read more

I love Indian Fry Bread so when we saw The Stand, we had to stop for lunch. I had the Red Chili combo (chili and beans) and my wife had Indian Taco. Both were served on fry bread. Both meals were a lot of food and were great. This place is very rustic and right on the reservation, here in Scottsdale. The people that run The Stand were great and fun to visit. A little of the main drags but well worth the trip. We will be back. read more
