I cannot say enough good things about State Line, or the County Line franchise, in general. Damn. Good. Barbecue. Whenever I pass through the region (even if I'm just in Las Cruces), I make sure to wheel down to Sunland Park and come here, at least to get some of that bread. Food-wise, this is about as good as it gets anywhere. There's no such thing as a bad dish on this extensive menu. You can eat the barbecue with no sauce at all, or with a ton of sauce (it's some of the best sauce you'll find anywhere in the country, IMHO). It works either way. I love the brisket though. For Texas BBQ, you cannot go wrong with the brisket. Then (and this totally does deserve it's own paragraph), there's the bread. How do they do it? One of my first memories as a kid, living in Austin, was eating this bread. Seriously. They have made a change recently though (at least at the El Paso location), where, although the sandwiches are still served on the good bread, the bread served as a sort of complimentary appetizer is annoyingly inferior. It's still okay, but, when you compare it to the "real" bread, it sucks. I usually leave here with a fresh loaf (they bake it every day, even Sundays) to take home. Service has always been fantastic. I mean, this could be the worst service imaginable, and I would still come here all the time, because the food's just so good. But I have always had such great experiences here with the service, that it's made even better and makes me love the place all the more. Sure, you can get better barbecue in the state. But take a look at Salt Lick, for instance: you have to wait at least one hour for a table, it's cash-only, and the service isn't very good. If you want to sit down and enjoy yourself without a lot of hassle, County Line is always a better choice, and really the best choice once you get west of Midland. A caveat though: if you're a vegetarian or are health-conscious, you just need to stay the hell away. Seriously. No salads on the menu, which should tell you something right away. This is not a place where you come to eat healthy. It's barbecue, and makes no apologies for being so. Another suggestion: they have Barq's Red Cream Soda, and it comes with free refills. If you want a soda, get that. For whatever reason, it goes great with barbecue. And Yelp made me recall something: all County Lines have great patios, and this place is no exception. Because it lacks the views, it's walled in and has a patio with fountains, plants and a really nice atmosphere. On a nice day, it would be a good place to sit. read more

The State Line should be considered the best Bar-B-Que in El Paso, which is nice that the company expanded this way, but also sad that a Texas chain, 600-miles from ground zero can steak claim in another Texas city and reign supreme. Still, their combinations are excellent, and the Mixed Platter (1 rib, brisket, sausage link, beans, and cole slaw) is a fantastic value for $14. Their meat is always tender, ribs are huge, and sides very complimentary of the main dishes. Their sauce (for the non-purists) is nice and tangy and plentiful. The building itself takes from the style of the County Line and provides a very comfortable, relaxed setting for its patrons. Its also pretty interesting that half of this restaurant resides in New Mexico, while the other half sits in Texas. read more

I'll keep it short: I had the 5 meat combo, and of the group I only liked both brisket cuts. Turkey and short ribs were both dry, the beef rib was ok. All the above were slathered with the same uninspired BBQ sauce, not appealing. Coleslaw was flavorless, potato salad mediocre.... Do you see where I'm going here? I've had better. My husband and I had our wedding reception here nearly two years ago and it was an amazing experience! The food was great, the service was wonderful and everything was as expected. The lady (forgot her name) I spoke to about the packages was very helpful and informative and didn't pressure me on the options. I highly recommend this venue for events! When we were done, the service took care of packaging everything up and helped us clean up. The prices for events are not so exuberant, especially considering the quality of the resturaunt! Caught a little later lunch (1pm-ish) while in town on business. Quickly seated, quickly attended to by very personable and nice waiter. The waiter explained the difference between the regular dinners and the "lite" dinners...so I got the "Lite" because I couldn't eat an entire cow. Had the "Lean Brisket", which was great. It came with these beans - they aren't baked beans in the Bushes-canned sense. I'd call them more akin to delicious red beans one might eat over rice. It also came with cole slaw and potato salad. The cole slaw was really good, and I wont comment on the potato salad since I am not unbiased towards potato salads in general. Brisket came with sauce on it - not my favorite way, but the sauce was fantastic so no complaints. They had homemade bread - worth it (just as the menu indicated). I had the white bread, which was totally tasty and crusty and good. Should I come back to El Paso - I hope it is with someone who is a DD, because they have a lovely outdoor seating area that I think I would like to sit on with a few pitchers of beer and enjoy an evening. Dined at this establishment last night with 5 co-workers. I had the Brisket and Turkey platter with grilled veggies, slaw and beans. The Brisket was fantastic, connective tissue well broken down, good flavor. The Turkey was pretty dry and...well.....turkey. Veggies were OK, the onion was only cooked on the outside. Slaw was great. The beans......I'm not a fan of this flavor, I like them flavored more on the brown sugar and bacon side. I've had better BBQ plates. IMO, this establishment should add more greens to the menu. A side salad, steamed kale, or something. I can only assume that this place gets a significant amount of business travelers. Yes, I am on a business trip, but that doesn't mean I need to skip the nutrients I eat normally. I've yet to decide if I will make this a normal source of food when I am here on business. read more

We had a break from work on a Saturday afternoon and headed out to this place a tad west of downtown El Paso. I had the two meat lunch special with brisket and a beef rib. The beef rib was tough to get into, but the brisket was tender and juicy. $9.99 was a pretty good deal for all the food. Decent beans and fresh cole slaw and potato salad made for a good deal. Nothing special here though. I've heard Cattleman's is the place to go around here so I'll try to get there before my work trip is over. Go meat! read more

Setting: Just like a BBQ place should be, loud and busy! The walls are busy too, lots of eye candy. All in all a fun place to be. And it's kinda cool how it is right in the border of Texas and New Mexico. You can literally be in both states at once. Food: One of the best barbecues I've ever had. The biggest portions you will find anywhere of some of the best food you will ever eat. Hands-down, a great Texan BBQ. The ribs, chicken, brisket, and even veggie kabobs are amazing. State Line gives you the freshest, warmest, biggest Texas style bread to munch on (piece after piece, not for anyone doing low-carb!) before your very large meal. Recently, a lot of new BBQ places have moved into El Paso. These new places claim they are the best in town, but I will stick with the original best BBQ in El Paso joint, even though most the restaurant is located in New Mexico. The food, especially the baby back ribs and sausage, is worth the drive to the far west side. The homemade ice cream, specifically vanilla bean, is a great way to top of a meal. I recommend you order their bread as well. If you are familiar with the County Line restaurants then consider the State Line the El Paso equivalent. 5 out of 5, and don't forget to ask for extra napkins! read more

A mere shadow of its former self. Used to be one of the best barbecue places on the planet, now it's just another barbecue place. If you're there on an "off" night, you can get meat that was made yesterday. Oh, trust me - I can tell when ribs were made yesterday. They freeze their leftovers (that weren't eaten, of course) and then re-heat them the next day. Their smoked sausage was excellent the last time I was there. Years ago (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), there was a place in Ranchland called "Herman's Pit Barbecue". Now that place was REAL smoked barbecue. Alas, that place is long gone. The default was always State Line. Still in all, State Line is probably the best of all the barbecue places in El Paso. There's always Chris' place in the Lower Valley, but it's not open on weekends. Good but pricey. This place sells pretty run of the mill BBQ. Their meat is done really well but the BBQ sauce is funny and has a non-BBQ taste. We had the ribeye for the main course and for about $25 it was really tasty. The decor is outdated and I think it's probably purposeful but I wasn't impressed. It felt cramped but tolerable. These guys do a nice job with the BBQ, I got the 5 meat platter and ordered a side of the pulled pork in order to try all their meats. All of them were juicy, had the right amount of smoke and were drenched in their yummy sauce. Service was very good, the price was reasonable, and the joint was busy and fun to be in. Was it the best BBQ? No, but it was a very good experience and I am glad I went. We went here on a trip to El Paso and Mexico a few months ago. Since it was a while back, I don't remember all the details. But it was a fun place to eat. We were only there for a few nights and it was with a group of people who kept pointing out all the chain restaurants we have at home. I wanted to make sure to eat somewhere unique to where we were so I found out about this place and dragged everyone here. Afterwards, everyone was glad that I did. The atmosphere is totally Texas. Longhorn horns hanging in the bar, lots of people in cowboy hats, etc. As for the food, it was lots of good food for cheap. I got one of the combinations that comes with a little of just about everything. Ribs, brisket, I think some chicken, three sides, etc. Everything was quite good but not as incredible as you think it'll be when you see TV shows showing how great Texas barbecue is. And the bread was good like everyone else said. We had a big group, the service was quite good, and we all enjoyed the food and the atmosphere here. read more

The food is pretty good, although the ribs, as mentioned in other reviews, were not quite "fall off the bone" delicious. They tasted as if they had been cooked quickly and the "skin" was left on the backs. For a place that is so busy, they did not seem to be able to handle the rush. I was part of a large group and we waited for nearly 1.5 hours to be seated. The staff seemed to be in a constant state of distress and confusion. While we waited, they ran out of their awesome bread. :( If you go, go early, and keep in mind that a large group 8+ will wait for a long time for a table on a weekend night. Between you, me, and the wall, I have had better BBQ at the chains like Dickey's and Famous Dave's, but this place has them beat on ambiance. read more

But if you're a BBQ connaisseur, Cattleman's is the absolute best, and Rudy's brisket, Famous Dave's ribs, and the Great American's steaks are all better, I would say. The one thing they do better at Stateline than at Famous Dave's and Rudy's is the interior. Also, cool that there is a liquor store next door where they sell affordable great Belgian beers like Hoegaarden and Leffe. You can order those inside of Stateline, and they'll bring them from the store to your table. read more

I have always loved state line. It's the place I eat at every time I'm back in my home town, every time. Tonight may have changed that. They no longer have baby back ribs on the menu. Let that sink in....NO BABY BACKS. They now have St. Louis style pork ribs, which the waitress assured me were "exactly the same, just meatier." They aren't and this 5 star place has dropped to 3. The bread is still great, the cobbler fantastic, the sausage divine. Just don't go expecting the delicious baby backs of yesteryear. And the service was rough. Party of 10, so I guess when 18% gratuity is automatic you can expect to ask for extra sauce and honey butter twice and wait 10 minutes for it. "Can I get you more water?" ...forget it. We were on a 1 glass per person limit. DP refill? "I'll be right back." Sure.... read more

My sister and I went looking for great Texas Bar b que and found it in New Mexico! Parking is in Texas! :-) Our waiter was fabulous! I rate this place a solid 3.5. It was good. The chicken, sausage and pulled pork was amazing. Their fresh homemade bread was awesome!! They really give you a lot of food for your money thats for sure. The problems we had was the baby back ribs. The ribs itself were tasteless, the bbq sauce was the only thing giving it taste but even that was a little more on the vinegary side than it should have been. The potato salad was ok, I dont really know what to say about it but, ok. This place had its ups and downs but it is definatly worth at least one visit if you havent tried it. read more

We have been going to Stateline off/on for over 40 years, but tonight was our last time. I had the smoked sausage and 2d cut brisket. The smoked sausage, wasn't smoked. Looked as if they had thrown it on a grill, and took it off. Could not eat the 2d cut brisket, sent it back as it looked like roast beef vice brisket and just did not taste good. They did exchange the 2d cut brisket for pulled pork but it was not much of an improvement. The pulled pork was, "soggy," and it did not taste of any kind of smoke. My wife had the pulled pork and the pork ribs. Same comment as mine for the pulled pork and the ribs were tough, and again, did not taste of smoke. She also had the wings and they were pretty good. The bread pudding was really good. We drove 30 miles one way to get there. It used to be really, really good, but I think they've begun taking short cuts. They say you can't go back and I will not go back to Stateline. **1 hour later, both my wife and I have been sick to our stomachs since returning from the Stateline. **3 hours later I am STILL sick to my stomach with cramps and diarrhea **24 hours later, stomach STILL hurting but diarrhea finally went away. Sounds like Texas Department of Health should take a HARD look at their food prep and distribution!!! read more

It's been quite a while since I've been to State Line, but here it goes, what can I say about this place, I think this picture is worth a 1000 words! Pork baby-backs that fall off the bone drenched in a succulent smoked BBQ sauce, a fully loaded baked potato, and your choice of sides. The homemade bread ( pictured at right) is so worth the drive, moist, fluffy, and when paired with a pat of real honey-butter, well, what can I say, "Don't mess with Texas!". The sauce is good, but not the greatest, but I'm partial to some sauces back home. After working long days and feeling exhausted a friend took me to Stateline to experience Texas barbecue. I'm from California so I love barbecue and must say wow, those ribs were delish. The food is abundant and the sides are yummy too. We tried the homemade bread as an appetizer and drank Margaritas along with chowing down on great barbecued food. The service was a bit inattentive. We had to find our server to order more drinks and when we wanted to pay we had to search her down again. Aside from that I really enjoyed it. Plus I have to say the prices are low compared to California. Two huge meals, appetizer and drinks cost us $70 including the tip. read more

I am visiting from Atlanta. I am in El Paso for a few days and decided I would like some TX bbq. So I get in my rental and drive to New Mexico, then drive back with my food. I was soo excited. I got back to the room and opened up my food. Man it was meh, not good. I spent $27 for the sampler. None of ribs were fresh, they were very dry. The brisket was okay and the turkey was good, never touched the sausage. To say the least I was disappointed. Way forward, never give customers the old dried out food. You may end up on the Yelp. One star for the service, half for the brisket, half for the turkey. read more
