Service needs improvement We went to this tavern to watch the World Cup soccer game. I was with a party at four and our dog. We sat out on the patio, which was dog friendly, which was very nice My gripe is that the service was rather slow, and the server wasn't very friendly. The kicker was we were ordering off the happy hour menu, which goes until 6 PM, and around 5:30 we asked the server if he would come back in about 15 minutes so that we can get our last order in before 6 PM He came back at 5:55 and we ordered a few more things from the happy hour menu and he said "happy hour is over, you can no longer order off the happy hour menu." I asked him "how can that be? It's still 5:55. The menu clearly states that happy hour goes until 6 PM plus we asked you 30 minutes ago if you can come back in 15 minutes and you said yes." He said he was told that happy hour is over and he can't take any more happy hour orders I told him to ask his boss or whoever told him that to come over and explain it to us He said the owner told him that I asked him please have the owner come over and explain that to us He went over and talked to the owner and then came back and said I can take your happy hour orders But that's just uncalled for you. They have a happy hour to attract business and they need to honor it. If it's 'till 6 o'clock they gotta take happy orders 'till 6 o'clock. Cutting people off five minutes early just results in upset customers. It's poor way to run a business. Other than that, the place is OK Food was all right, nothing to write home about. Let's just say the food is good - the service sucks- that's being nice . So here we go- We were seated in the corner which was actually nice away from people and it was better for us to talk. So we thought- to my left was glass and seated there was a couple- it was a little uncomfortable - they can do something about that - a little Curtain - some steamed something ? we were looking at each other and it was kinda different . Not bad - not good - just different . We waited 10 full minutes before someone came over and brought two small waters which is ok- and then left - at least he said hi. Our waitress then showed up and didn't say her name - and asked us if we were ready - and then we ordered - I was in mid sentence and looking down and then swoop - the menu was gone - I guess I didn't want to add to my order- Our food came out and the Calimari was good, a decent portion, a bit salty - but - it was good . Then came our food - I got the short ribs - I will say it was really good and the meat just shredded nicely ....it was exceptional actually. My brother got the salmon and I will say it was delicious-- both were small portions with a big price - that's Napa . I don't know how it was 140$ for dinner - for two- but it is what it is. Then we were asked for dessert - a menu came and we waited it took a while for our server to come back - and since we waited so long we were turned off to get dessert ... so we went to Annette's up the street . No worries there is always something around the corner . If you read my review.. you will see she never checked on us - she did come back to get a drink refill - and that's it.. It's the 16$ an hour plus tips I guess... bad service for she will get paid anyway- service used to be important - now it's devices- it seems like she was looking at her device the whole time - the little computer they used to order the food. Maybe that's how they run the place .. it wasn't busy- it looked steady - but not busy tonight 3/7 around 730 pm... No one came by to say hi, or to welcome us in. Maybe at the desk ,, the hostesses . Overall, the food was delicious. The busboy was amazing--super friendly, attentive, and consistently refilled our water. His service really stood out. Unfortunately, our waiter wasn't quite at the same level. Not bad, but not 5-star--could have been warmer and more attentive. We interacted with a couple of servers, and the experience was fairly consistent across them. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from Napa: clean, elegant, and relaxing. Stopped in for a late lunch this past weekend with my husband. It's been a while since we've been and I was really happy to see the Goat Cheese Spinach dip appetizer still on the menu. It was as good as I remembered. For lunch we both had burgers, shared Truffle Parmesan fries, and loved every bite. Our server Spencer was friendly and took great care of us. I am born and raised in Napa, I haven't eaten here in years but thought we would give it a try... What a disappointment it was!!! My chicken sandwich had literally no chicken and on the smallest plate , Embarrassing! My husband had short ribs, one rib., $40.00 and $9.00 side salad , ( this is not a $50,00 per person place! ) My son had French dip, came with no fries or sides. $150.00 meal ( no extras for a cafe style atmosphere) Very disappointed!, Would never recommend!!! Boy I should look around more often. My laser focus was getting some red meat into my breadbasket. It was early dinner late lunch time when we came in. The place looked very nice, kind of big and empty. We worked our way to the bar seats, ordered drinks and looked at the menu. I had a wine because I knew I wanted, red meat. My wife had an Old Fashioned because she's...you know. Then boom, there it was, a hanger steak and fries. My wife wasn't hungry at this ridiculous time of day so she just ordered some breaded pickles, that she didn't eat until tomorrow. Anyway, that steak was perfectly cooked. Great lunch or dinner spot. Tried their house made barley and bean burger. It was good, sauce was great, on a soft brioche bun. Cheeseburger was solid as well. Right in the heart of downtown Napa, we found this to be a delicious stop for lunch, in between wine tastings. Our servers were friendly and our food came out quickly. I had and liked my barley and bean burger with avocado slice and Swiss cheese. It was tasty but a bit on the dry side. I shared the peach burrata salad with my spouse and we loved it! I haven't eaten at Norman Rose or gotten to-go food in a few years now. We went in the other night to give it one last chance after having a few too many disappointing meals. The spinach goat cheese dip is just as I remembered, rich and delicious. My husband got the lamb burger and said it was lacking in flavor. I branched out from my go to fried chicken sandwhich with an egg and instead got the chicken parm, it was so disappointing. This was probably our last time going to Norman Rose. There are just too many great restaurants in downtown Napa to risk spending that kind of money on another mediocre meal. read more

I had awesome food here I got the Wienerschnitzel that came with German potato salad. It is some of the best that I've had. My friend got the French dip sandwich. She stated it tasted really well. The calamari was overly fried and the shishito peppers had great flavor, lightly oiled and salted but were a bit undercooked. We also tried two of the lunch specials. The pulled pork on a potatoe bun was topped with scant coleslaw and red onions, also included sweet potatoe fries (instead of a la carte). I had an amazing experience at Norman Rose Tavern. As someone who's been on the hunt for truly good fish and chips, I can finally say I found something worth calling the real deal. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the portion size felt fair for the price. The staff struck a great balance -- friendly and attentive without constantly interrupting the meal to ask if everything was okay. It made the whole experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. At one point, the music was slightly loud for my liking. Another guest politely mentioned it, and the staff immediately turned it down and made sure everyone was comfortable. That kind of responsiveness really stood out. What truly went above and beyond was what happened after I left. I had forgotten my hat on the seat, and instead of just putting it in lost and found, our waiter actually ran out of the restaurant and caught up with me before I crossed the street to the parking area. That level of care is rare and genuinely appreciated. Overall, this was a 10/10 experience. Norman Rose Tavern is one of our regular stomping grounds because the food is consistently good and the environment is comfortable. My husband and I went there for a late lunch and sat in a booth by the window to people watch the passersby on the street. We enjoyed our server's mellow nature and smooth service. I was thirsty from being out in the sun and both server and busser kept my iced tea and water full. Seriously, I must have a hollow leg to store it all! Here's what we enjoyed: The Wedge Salad is big enough to share. Crispy, fresh, and tasty! My husband was craving a BLT. It was not on the menu but they had all of the ingredients so the server made it possible. He thought it was perfect. The bread and bacon were proportioned evenly making each bite delicious. Their lamb burger is always good. I love how the cheese and greens dance with the flavors of the lamb. What blew us away this time though were the Sweet Potato Fries. Seriously? It is a mystery what made them stand out for us?? They were the best we have ever had. My husband does not like sweet potato fries and he thought they were great. They were cooked to perfection. Went to Napa for a midweek lull. Since the restaurant's close to the hotels, getting there's no problem. A huge off-menu specials board right by the entrance which featured a good selection of items. Decided to go with what's on the menu. The Short Rib with mushroom risotto is pure decadence- the short rib was braised tenderly, and the risotto was on point; I sent my regards and compliments to the chef. Went here for Valentine's Day! The service was really good. The ambiance is pretty live and lots of lights. They have roses on each table I'm not sure if it's their signature thing to do or if it was just for Valentines. The food was really good but the portions were pretty small for the price. Started off with calamari as appetizer which was delicious and super tasty. We also got some Drinks- I got the strawberry cocktail they have which I absolutely enjoyed as it was not too over powering tasting like alcohol (I'm not a big fan of straight up alcohol) so it was very nice for me. For entrees, Fish and chips- 5/10, not very much flavor, soft and crunchy but lacked flavor. New York steaks were ask to be well done and medium well and they both came out about medium-medium rare, which was unfortunate. The short rib was actually quite tasty and very tender. Mac n cheese was ok, and the breadcrumbs on top gave it a nice touch. Truffle fries didn't taste like truffle fries so that gets 6/10. We also got the Brussels sprout (not pictured) which were also a big hit. Went on a Friday night and it seemed like the restaurant was pretty slow, only a couple tables the entire time we were there. Service as a whole was a bit slow, waters stayed pretty much empty the entire time we were there until we were able to wave someone down. Our waiter would be gone for long periods of times so if we did need anything it was almost impossible to get it when we needed/wanted it. I'm going to start with the good. Food is good no complaints. For the price and taste I will go back. The short rib was tender and full of flavor. The salmon appetizer was a big portion and the pan roasted chicken cook perfectly. Now for the bad. The service was bad. Our waiter Israel is overwhelmed. He was serving 5 tables with one of the tables with a party of 8. He barely check on us, didn't ask if we needed more drinks and gave the wrong bill at then end. All I can think of is one of their staff called in sick. Too bad, for a Friday night, the restaurant should be in full force serving and making sure that they turn their tables fast. For the service, I'm not setting foot at this restaurant anytime soon. read more

Thank you Norman Rose for the hospitality during my mother in laws bday lunch. Great food, great atmosphere, good service and comfortable seating. Reservations was easy to make. Yes, right here on Yelp! I called to double check if they allow outside cake and they said yes (they do charge a cake cutting fee however, was not told that but I expected it). As a reminder, I received a confirmation text of my reservation the day before. We walked in and was greeted right away. The hostesses and our server were all super friendly and nice. Patient as well- we asked a lot of questions. All of them answered with a smile and our host even shared some laughs with us when she had to go back in the kitchen and ask. Food was good. I enjoyed my fried l chicken sandwich which I highly recommend! Burgers are a La carte here so add some fries to go with it. Parking can be a pain here due to street parking but don't fret, there are a couple of public parking spaces around the corner. I would absolutely come back here again. read more

While in Napa, we stumbled upon the Norman Rose Tavern. They had their menu posted outside, so we got a glimpse into what they offered. My husband and I were in downtown Napa for the night. Stopped in for an early dinner. We were greeted and shown to a table right away. Immediately had someone come and ask if we wanted water while we waited for our server. Dominic, our server, came by within minutes and took our drink orders. We got a strawberry fields and a really tasty gin sour. Our drinks came out quickly and our order was taken. We ordered the fish and chips and steak frites. Steak was very flavorful and tender. Service was great. Dominic was very friendly and checked on us multiple times. We decided to order dessert, which we don't normally do, because we were enjoying the chill ambience. My sister in law flew out from Arizona back to her home town of Napa to see friends and family for her birthday. When we got to the restaurant, she had the back room with a large table. The restaurant seemed a little hot (there was a heat wave in Northern California like normal in July) and the people we were with mentioned how hot it was to the waitress and if we could get more air in that room. I guess the temperature couldn't go down any further. We were able to open the back door to the room and get some sort of hot airflow. I believe there was an issue with the air conditioner for the whole building because I saw another restaurant connected to the hallway with a fan blowing into their restaurant. Our waitress was very short and left our table quickly not giving us a chance to ask for more water, or grab a kids menu for our son (the only kiddo at the table) Once our food came to the table, my wedge salad and fettuccine Alfredo was really good. My husband got the steak and said it was dry. At the end when checking out, we paid our portion of the bill which was $200. I didn't get a chance to offer a tip, I imagine it was included in the bill since we had 10 people in our party. In times like this I feel like the waiter/waitress doesn't care how he or she provides great service because no matter what you're paying that tip. I feel my husband and I are great tippers, we've both worked in the food industry and know it's hard making a living and not everyone tips like we do.
