After reading a plentiful amount of reviews espousing the qualities of The Stone Tavern, and viewing some amazing looking photos of the food, a work colleague and I were excited to visit for lunch and try it out. We were promptly seated in a mostly full dining area just to the right of the entrance around 12:30 pm on a Thursday. The dining room was spacious with plenty of room between tables though the booths are a tad tight. A large bar area with lots of TVs looked appealing as well. Drinks were quickly ordered and served as we perused the menu. While we had both looked at the menu prior to coming, and had an idea of what we wanted, there were so many appealing options that we second guessed a little as we made the tough decisions to not order way more than we could consume. Finally we decided on The Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with fries, the Ribeye Cheesesteak with fries, and a bowl of the Tomato, Bacon Mac & Cheese with the agreement to split the sandwiches and mac & cheese so we could both try additional items. Three very full and visually appealing plates of food arrived quickly (about 10-12 minutes after ordering) and we were ready to dig in. First up was the Ribeye Cheesesteak with caramelized stout onions, truffled local mushrooms, and sharp provolone on a Liscio's roll. Immediately viewable was the limited amount of cheese that was only lining the roll and not mixed into the meat in any way. Biting into the sandwich revealed a dry meat with a distinctly non-cheesesteak flavor. It wasn't bad, but it just tasted like a bland steak and cheese sandwich. The sharp provolone didn't make it to the party and had no noticeable presence. After eating half of my portion I added some ketchup which helped some with the dryness. This was a 25 out of 5 and I wouldn't bother ordering it again. I also started to consume the shoestring french fries while I ate the cheesesteak, and they were delicious. Crisp with just the right amount of salt. 4.5 out of 5. Next up was the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with thinly shaved Black Angus beef that is roasted daily, served with Au Jus, and horseradish sauce on a long roll. Topped with cheese and loaded with meat, this is what I was most looking forward to and couldn't wait to take a bite. I wish I hadn't! By itself, this was probably the blandest sandwich I have ever had in my life, while dipping into the Au Jus definitely improved the flavor, it still wasn't enough. I tried adding the horseradish sauce, but that was a sad approximation of real horseradish. Worst of all was the meat itself, where I had three different bites that were fatty/gristly and couldn't be chewed. Can't say I've ever had that from a roast beef sandwich before. 1.5 out of 5. Lastly, we had the Tomato, Bacon Mac & Cheese consisting of cavatappi pasta, applewood smoked bacon, and some diced tomato. This was sadly also a disappointment. The quality of the cheese left something to be desired and the sauce was very runny in consistency even after letting it sit for 10 mins while everything else was eaten. Another bland dish that neither of us even bothered to finish or box up to take home. Ketchup couldn't save this. 2 out of 5. Other than the fries, the only other bright spot was the service. Our waitress Isabella was polite, attentive, and performed her job well. Refilling drinks and making sure we were taken care of. 5 out of 5 for service. Affordability... for the three dishes and two Diet Cokes the total came to $57.27 with tax plus a $12 tip. The portion sizes were strong, but the flavor eliminated any value proposition. Overall, the food looked far better than it tasted and I was really disappointed in the meal. I had hoped I'd found a good local pub to take family and friends, but The Stone Tavern doesn't cut it. 2 out of 5 rating with no good reason to return. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed a belated St. Patrick's Day lunch in the cozy confines of this charming pub. The dark wood, stone wall, lively bar, and delicious food (Shepherd's Pie and an Emerald Salad with salmon) brought back fond memories of gathering spaces in the west of Ireland. Love this local hangout. Probably the best cheesesteaks in Chester County. The new owner is obviously very serious about his West Chester establishment which has kept up with the times over many years. Great place to catch up with like minded sport, travel and political friends. Ron the bartender during the day is the GOAT of bartending in Chester county maybe all of PA. I personally keep a notebook of his life & health wisdoms. Secret thing to know is that they will roll up that "best of" cheesesteak into a wrap and put a fried egg and jalapeños in it if you're willing to give up a little of that incredible steak because you just can't get that much meat into a wrap! . Their fries are a must. I live in Arizona a lot of the year but always look forward to getting back to The Stone Tavern in the spring! read more

my aunt and I went there for lunch yesterday. It was fabulous. This place is a hidden gem! I had the smash burger and it was spot on and huge! Also a very generous helping of their crispy fries with it. My aunt had the apple and walnut salad, which was a very generous portion and very delicious! Then for dessert to top it all off, we had their homemade bread pudding. It was the best bread pudding I've ever had! I recommend this restaurant for a memorable meal. read more

My wife and I were in the mood for fish and chips and a friend recommended The Stone Tavern. I see many poor reviews but we found that the food was very good, the service was very good and the atmosphere was bar casual. One thing though, this place was very busy for Sunday mid-afternoon, the place was very noisy and loud. I could barely hear my wife across the table from me but maybe that wasn't a bad thing. The Stone Tavern looked pretty cool on the outside when we were driving by so we stopped to have dinner there. We arrived on a Saturday night, around 7:30... For a bar/tavern/pub, it was surprisingly dead in there, so we had our pick of seats. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, but food coming out of the kitchen was slow. And the food itself was very lackluster. We thought we'd liven things up and get dessert, but the kitchen had closed down early. Then about half an hour before the restaurant was actually due to be closed, we were told they were closing the whole restaurant early and we were sort of shooed out. Having worked in the restaurant industry before, I get it. There are no other customers and the bill was settled, so the staff wanted to close up shop early. The whole experience was overall disappointing. At least the food was warm. Solid 3 stars. read more

The Stone Tavern is great! We sat at the bar and had a fantastic bartender who fave us perfect service all night. The food was amazing, perfect pub fare. My husband and I split the French dip and they even put it on separate plates for us, which was a nice touch. I tried my first ever scotch egg and it was absolutely delicious, definitely won't be my last. On top of that, Stone Tavern had one of our favorite guitar players, Jeff Dominik perform beginning at 8 PM. We sat at the bar, enjoyed the music, and had a great time. The Stone tavern does not take it self too seriously but I thought it was Definitely a five-star Irish pub! Perfect for what it is. read more

An amazing local spot! The food and drinks are great, and it's always a fun time! The bartenders are awesome so we usually sit at the bar (you can order food as well as drinks). They have a lot of regulars and it truly feels homey! A few of my favorite things to order are the Emerald Salad, Mushroom and Carmelized Flatbread, Cheddar Wedges, and Loaded Fries (No Bacon). My lengthy relationship with The Stone Tavern in West Chester is now over. Firstly, their food is mediocre at best. It's bland pub food no better than your average diner. But the real problem came last night. My family and I stopped in for what we thought was going to be a nice quiet dinner after a long, exhausting evening. We opened the door of the restaurant, only to be blasted in all of our ears by music that was at an ear-splitting, hearing-damaging volume. My 80 year old mother was wincing in pain as her hearing aids amplified the already blaring music to an eardrum-rupturing level. Obviously, we couldn't stay longer than a few seconds. As we were leaving, I decided to give my feedback about the ridiculous, totally unneccesary, inappropriate noise levels, and I started explaining why were leaving to the teenager at the front. Worse still than the bland food, the horrible volume of music, and the trivia night person screaming into the microphone, was the fact the teenage boy in front said he would NOT pass along my feedback to the manager or owner because "it's just how it is," and "we can't accommodate everyone," and "they've been doing this for years and they're not going to change it." This is literally the first time in my life I have encountered anyone saying that no, they would not pass along my feedback. Let me clear something up for the people making these decisions: the volume of the music and trivia screamer will absolutely cause permanent hearing damage in all of your staff and diners. There is NO reason why the music and trivia person have to be THAT loud. The average person would be able to hear everything just fine at a quarter of the volume. I have been to plenty of pubs having trivia night, and NO ONE had the music and trivia person at ANYWHERE near the volume you people had it at last night. No one. It was louder than a concert. Further, those rude little children at the front need some training in customer service. If a customer asks them to pass along feedback, they need to learn to pass along the feedback, not tell the customer no, they won't pass it along. These kids have no idea that their hearing IS absolutely sustaining permanent damage from that level of noise. I hope all of their parents read this and I hope the manager and owner reads it. Your kids' hearing is undergoing permanent longterm damage by working at The Stone Tavern in West Chester, Pa. And by the way, you just lost three longtime customers. Never again! read more

Last night our group of 25 showed up at the Stone Tavern, and they were so accommodating. They went over and beyond to have us all seated together. I haven't seen such great customer service in years. We could've overwhelmed them by our group, but they were so pleasant. My only regret is, I don't have anyone's names to thank. This place is really cute!! A dimly lit pub that is right up my alley. I came with a coworker for an external meeting. It was great for that as it wasn't super busy or loud. The bar is big and on a day off I would love to enjoy a Guinness here!! My coworker went with the chicken sandwich and I had the burger, we both really enjoyed it! He finished every bite. I was intrigued to see things like a cheesesteak and meatball sandwich on the menu, very unexpected but fitting for the area. I wish I'd known this was here sooner as I've worked in the area a while. After my experience having an after work beer at this place, I have to echo many of the one-star reviews that this place has received. The ambience is nice enough, but the bartender was downright aggressive. I've been to many a divey place and have honestly never experienced anything quite like this--it's like he decided he didn't like me when I walked in and that was that. Seems especially 'extra' for bar in West Chester, PA--it's the suburbs, tough guy--take that act down the shore. Again, it seems like a number of other reviewers have experienced similar unwarranted hostility from this dude; I understand their sentiments. This place used to be the place to go for a quick, quality family meal. Unfortunately this is no longer the case since the new ownership took over. While the menu hasn't changed much the quality of the food has definitely gone down hill. The wait time for food has increased drastically. I walked in the door at 5:15 and didn't leave until almost 7:00. The servers are still friendly as ever however the guy up front needs to change his attitude. He is extremely rude and uninviting ALL OF THE TIME, so bad that my 10 year old asked "what's this guys deal?" This used to be one of our favorite spots to go and I have tried giving them time to adjust under new ownership but unfortunately we will be having to take our business elsewhere. read more

Not sure what happened tonight but we usually do not have an issue when ordering the wings AND we always look forward to it. I ordered and because I was at home which is 8 minutes away I went according to the 20 min pick up time. When I got home I gave the kids each of their orders they ate two and said never mind I don't want them. Mind you they are both 6'2" and never turn down food. I tried one and they were super dry. So I called back and they were happy to replace them. I immediately picked them up and went home. The mediums were great juicy and hot not over cooked the second batch was dry again! I took a pick because I thought that was odd that one batch with different sauce was delicious and cook right and the second was terribly over cooked. So how many Irish Pubs are there in America? 10,000? 100,000? More? I've been to a bunch and most of them offer forgettable bar food. This place is a delightful exception! The ATMOSPHERE is classic Irish Pub with the dark wood and slightly subdued lighting but there are a couple of twists here. The fit and finish inside is very high quality and everything is extra clean. It just feels classy! You'll know exactly what I mean when you visit. I sat at the bar and had solid CUSTOMER SERVICE. I happened to hit a shift change and I had already paid bartender #1. Even though I ordered nothing from bartender #2, he was also attentive. Nice! The menu and FOOD here will likely surprise you in a good way. How often do you see Duck Bolognese Cavatappi or Sweet and Savory Bacon flatbread with date puree in a pub? If the chef gets any more creative, folks are going to start tossing around the term "Gastropub!" I can never resist Deviled Eggs ($5.75) so I enjoyed them as an appetizer. They looked so good they were gone before I had a chance to take a picture. Other reviewers had praised the Black Angus Burgers so I went with the "All In" version ($11). It included chili, cheddar and a fried egg. It was very very good, cooked correctly and massive. It came with homemade chips that needed seasoning but were otherwise just fine. If you are looking for a pub experience in the Western Burbs, add these folks to your list. read more
