This is a must for anyone who loves Italian or Mexican food! We had the jumbo prawns for appetizer, it was Mexican inspired deliciousness. My husband had the crab ravioli special and I had the tomatillo chicken.... both were terrific! It's a quaint little place that we will ABSOLUTELY visit again 2nd VISIT did not disappoint! I had chicken/cheese ravioli special, hubs had the ribeye. Both were fantastic. Family owned establishment so waitress was very busy helping all customers. Not a great experience from a food perspective. However, the service was very good. The waitress/hostess was very attentive. Now for the food... we really wanted this to be great and it takes a lot to disappoint us but.... it was very sub-par. For starters the salad was very limp and the bread was very disappointing. You could tell it was warmed in the microwave which was especially disconcerting considering this restaurant has an Italian theme. This is pretty basic and should be an easy win. Then for the main course. I had the Flat Iron steak with garlic mashed potatoes. The flavor was good but both items were cold. My wife had the lemon chicken which was also cold, very bland and chewy. Don't know if we just had bad timing as I see many positive reviews here which is what brought us here to begin with. Unfortunately, we won't be back and would not recommend it to anyone considering this place for dinner. Try at your own risk. read more

Yummy! Previously The Oak Street Brassiere now the Subterranean owned by new people who sold the Mesquitery about 20 years ago. Super good food & specials! My puppy was barking in the Hood River hotel & he had to come over to the restaurant. We tied him at the bottom of the stairs & the owners little daughter looked after him. My husband gave her a $2 tip. Great service & moderately priced meal. Chicken cordon blue, lasagna, & ahi tuna is what we ordered and all were well presented and delicious! read more

We liked the staff and our waiter, very friendly and welcoming people. The food was okay at best. Not our favorite place in Hood River so far and we probably won't return. Worth checking out if you're a local and haven't tried yet, but if you're visiting short term it wouldn't be at the top of my list of places to try! That said, having indoor seating is a plus as that's hard to find right now so if you need somewhere warm it may be a good option! read more

-The Night of the big proposal- I'll start with saying the food is usually fantastic (usually) but the service is AWFUL! My now Fiancé and I went here on our first date so what better place to enjoy a meal before the big question?! It's a cute little restaurant with a nice atmosphere. We came in and it was a decently busy night with only a select few tables open. The hostess offered to let us sit at the bar while we waited for a booth (awesome, beer!) A gentlemen sitting at a table right behind the bar overheard and graciously gave up his table. The owner, our server watched as we switched and the hostess wiped down the table... this is key in the story. We then sat there for over 10 minutes while we waited for someone to get a drink order. My Fiancé ordered the Ribeye and clam chowder, I ordered the Creamy Chicken Alfredo and Clam Chowder. We then waited another 20 minutes to where I had to get up and go talk to our server just so we could get our soup. Getting anyone's attention was basically impossible I might add. Our dinner shortly followed. The steak was fantastic but the Alfredo was so oily I could feel it running down my face. Again not a single person came to check on us. I tried to eat it but I just couldn't. When I went to the bathroom my Fiancé flagged down a server and told them I wasn't enjoying my meal. When I came back out the owner, our server was standing there bringing us the check. He asked me to give the place another chance. I told him I usually love the food but this time was very unsatisfactory. He then when on to defend his food and ask why I didn't get anyone's attenion. I told him I tried but it was almost impossible to get anyone to even look our direction. Here's where the key point comes in. He then went on to tell me that most customers stand by the wait to be seated sign and wait to be seated... which we did. And that when we sat at the bar and then immediately switched tables it "threw off the flow" basically saying that because we weren't seated properly that he wasn't capable of giving us even remotely decent service. At this point I had enough, I calmly said I was going to leave as I didn't want some grown man telling me my extremely poor experience was my fault. As I walked out the door I let him know I am a server/bartender and I've been in this industry for 10 years so I know exactly how it works. If anyone needs to know apparently he's been in it for 30, I was about ready to tell him to retire but I refrained. Needless to say I ended up outside in tears because this man almost ruined my night, the night! Thankfully I have an amazing Fiancé who calmed me down and was still able to save the night. He proposed at the rose garden above the fountain in the rain and it was everything I could've ever wanted because I now get to marry the love of my life. As for The Subterranean, I will NEVER be back. read more

This place is delicious! Super fun to go downstairs into a romantic, dimly lit place. Great food and the owner was super nice, hospitable, and very attentive. Best calamari ever!!!! Very romantic setting.. plus great staff and delicious food. Truly, the calamari was amazing. The cocktails were not that great however; I ordered a pretty common mixed drink and what they served was no bueno.. I only drank a couple of sips.. when I told the server she apologized but didn't offer to come it or give me a different drink... a little disappointed there... did I mention the calamari?? I came in with my dad and brother visiting from California. We didn't really know where to eat but we were walking through the town and saw that this place claimed they had the best steak around. Let me say they 100% lived up to that claim. Best steak I've ever had. The cooks know exactly what they are doing. They cook it exactly how you ask it. Perfection. On to service. The guy that serves everyone was incredibly friendly. Super fun guy to have you helping you out, you want to talk to him all night. It's a really chilled out and fun atmosphere in the restaurant. Great music, the lights dimmed, and just makes you feel relaxed. I'm so sad that this place is more than a 10 hour drive from my house, cause let me tell you i would be going at least once a week. I took some good friends there this past memorial weekend on our way up the gorge. We didn't make it there until 9:40, the staff was friendly, greeted us with the biggest smile as if we were regulars that showed up at a normal dinner time. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about what she was serving. We went for her drink and dinner recommendations and she was spot on. The suggested drink was called " Sweet Melissa" and was delightfully light and refreshing. The dinner salad, tossed in their house dressing was delicious. I had the crab ravioli which had a zesty melt-in-your-mouth old school Italian flavor to make this a new favorite for me... My friends had the flat iron steak which was a first for them and they said it was very flavorful and too much for one of them to finish all of it, which was a great midnight snack for when we arrived at our cabin.... The restaurant is below the street with no windows but once inside you'll forget all about that. You can roll in with jeans or dress up to make it a romantic evening. The recycled decor and local art give it a historic vibe as well. The price was absolutely fair for the food and to be honest we have paid more for less at other places we have tried. They will definitely see us again soon and we highly recommend them to everyone who loves good service, great food and a great atmosphere. read more

Stumbled upon this place after a long hike near Hood River. We were looking for a place with happy hour. It turned out they had a nice one. It was super-bowl Sunday and the place was pretty quiet at the time. Only a few other patrons. The game was playing on the large screen TV. Our waiter, possibly the owner, was very friendly and personable. The menu offerings are definitely top quality. We ended up with a Parmesan Alfredo and the "Chicken Sub-T", grilled sandwich, and a bread bites snack (with kalamata olives and balsamic vinagar goodness) that we ordered from the happy hour menu. All were delicious. We decided to order a dessert as well, the creme brulee. Again, delicious. Note. It is rare for me to give a 5 star rating for any place but this was pretty nice. Really 4.5 stars. The only advice I'd give the owner would be to put some work into the bathrooms. We found this underground wonder by accident and had a wonderful family meal here in the heart of downtown. The extra measure the staff took, in particular, Chris, was amazing. And the food was great! Fried pickles were awesome and the on tap beers were fantastic. Great wines, too. Great steak, but only one entrance down a flight of stairs. The rear exit is blocked with cleaning supplies against the door above which is an "exit" sign & all is covered with a curtain. Waiter said that they were "grandfathered" in, so no problem. Never heard such a bogus statement. If there is a fire, what exit do the patrons use? One guess! This restaurant is overpriced for the quality of the food it offers. The bread was rubbery. My order of Ahi was very under cooked. It had just a few millimeters of sear to it and was slathered with an exceedingly salty sauce. The rice side had way too much seasoning in some bites and none in others. My husband said his steak was good but it arrived with veggies instead of the garlic mashed potatoes he ordered. When he pointed it out the waitress quickly brought out a side plate of the potatoes. Unfortunately they were overly salty too. We were in HR for the weekend and this was my birthday dinner out.
