Very attentive staff and good food. The portions were very generous. Dinner and dessert were more than enough to fill me up. Very cool atmosphere down there as well. Regardless of what you generally like to eat, you will find something on the menu that works for you. Would eat here again on my next stop through town.

This is our 1st visit to the city of Hood River, on a Tuesday night. We found this restaurant based on yo reviews. The restaurant is in the middle of downtown and under street level. This is a small restaurant. We are the only order party in the entire restaurant. The hostess and waitress was very helpful with our order. Nice food and service.

I've been here a couple of times now, and had the same experience twice. The wait staff (lady with short hair) is very polite, friendly and attentive but in no way overbearing. CON: They don't have sparkling water (most places in HR don't) and the bread you get with dinner is mediocre at best...very best. PRO: The service is really good, the food is delicious! I haven't had any meat dishes here, so I have no idea how they might taste. But the pasta and sauces are spot on! As far as "Italian" food goes, this is the tastiest in hood river.

The pasta is simply amazing!!! A family-owned restaurant that's friendly, fast, and has very tasty food!! I tried the Linguine Carbonara and it was delicious!! The owner was working alone serving and not once was frazzled or hurried. He got our food out pretty fast and checked in on us. Super friendly and kind! Definitely recommend this place!

We are new to town and we've already had two recommendations for The Subterranean. We went for dinner tonight and it was heavenly! We shared a Caesar salad and a pasta special (Linguine Milanese?), with tiramisu for dessert. All were delicious! The pasta was incredibly good and I'm glad to hear it's earned a permanent spot on the menu. We can't wait to go back and try a steak. Glad to know of this fun little spot.

Great food - wife and I tried different pastas that were both pretty good. Couldn't go wrong with our deep fried pickle appetizer either. The name of the restaurant doesn't lie - a dark, cozy basement atmosphere. Pretty lonely on a Thursday night in November but that was perfect for us.

So if you are traveling thru Hood River on the Columbia River Gorge You must stop to eat at the Subterranean restaurant- steakhouse. Adam & I decided to share each other's choices. I went with the Salmon Dill Aoli special with side veggies. It was amazing! Adam kept raving about the piece he ate. We also got their Flat Iron steak which was very tasty. Hubby got the garlic mash. Great service. Family owned and operated.

We were most interested in a couple of the dishes, most notably the pettole and arancini. We walked up on a Sunday for lunch and none of the items we wanted were on the menu! The owner mentioned how she rotates all the menu items every month on the 15th, migrating between specialty dishes between regions of Italy for 11 months of the year, then bringing the customer favorites back for the last month. What a unique concept! Unfortunately most of the menu items available didn't interest us that much, so we ended up only ordering the tiramisu. Chef did offer us samples if we were interested which I appreciated. Tiramisu ($8) - The owner warned us when we ordered that she had just made the tiramisu around 30 minutes prior, so the espresso still needed time to soak into the ladyfingers. Electing to get lunch at a different spot, we ended up waiting about 2 hours before digging in. Unfortunately due to being kept cold in our cooler, the bottom layer of ladyfingers still hadn't reached the point of being soaked enough to be tender. Another hour or two outside of the cooler solved the issue. An $8 order contains a pretty large tiramisu square, hand cut and fit snugly into a takeout container. It's such a rich dessert that eating only about a third of it completely filled me up. It's creamy, it's tender, it's sweet, it's thick. It's night and day vs. store bought tiramisu, being probably two or three times the richness of mascarpone and cream, although not cloyingly so. The espresso soaks in well after a couple of hours, giving tenderness to the ladyfingers and an espresso taste that isn't bitter or acrid at all. Yum! (5/5) I don't eat tiramisu all that much, but I loved the one served at Pesco. Given that they have different menu items every month, it seems like this food cart is a great place to visit for plenty of variety. I'll have to keep an eye out the next time I'm in town!

However, it's the ambiance that really sets this place apart. James is the maitre d' and traffic coordinator. Bad start but we decided to go for it (I planned this stop because they had good looking food and cocktails for the non wine drinkers). There were maybe 4 tables occupied, so I was surprised it would take "a long while". One person from my party went directly to the restroom so didn't hear what was said, when he came out he went to the bar and asked if he could order a flight which he received a strict "no it's going to be a long while" Lol I understand being overwhelmed or whatever, we're human, but to have the attitude was unnecessary. We left after a few minutes and spent $400 at another winery down the road. Which by the way was much busier but because they were kind we stuck it out, our server made a good chunk on tips too. Split the St. Helens Burger, an order of fries, and a side salad with the recommended goat cheese (trust them--it was the right call). The burger was everything you want it to be. A fresh poppy seed bun, a perfectly cooked patty, sweet caramelized onions... and then came the poblano pepper. That little bit of smoky heat tied the whole thing together. Now let's talk about the fries because they deserve their own paragraph. These are, without question, my favorite fries. They arrived hot, crispy, perfectly golden, and had that satisfying crunch that makes it impossible to stop at just one. If you're a fry person, these alone are worth the visit. The side salad was fresh and flavorful, and the creamy goat cheese took it from "just a side salad" to something I'd happily order again. It was the perfect balance to all those delicious fries. If you're looking for a place that consistently delivers great food in a welcoming atmosphere, Kickstand Coffee should absolutely be on your list. We've yet to have a bad meal here, and it's one of those places we recommend without hesitation to friends, family, and anyone who asks where to eat. I now wish I didn't let my husband eat more of the fries. Gotta head back up there soon! Service was great and love that the girl at the counter asked me if I was doing anything fun today - extra friendliness goes a long way!
