Although I felt the buffalo chicken wrap needed more buffalo sauce was good though. We also got over easy eggs w/ hash and toast. My mom ate her entire plate it was so delicious! For dessert I picked one of there decedent mini cakes the red velvet. However I found that either the simple syrup or maybe just the flavor was a little berry and that wasn't what I was expecting for red velvet but our server was so nice he let me pick another dessert to replace it complimentary and I went with the crumb cake. Here the food was pretty decent but with such large menus I think you need to figure out what they are actually good at when ordering. One of the things I miss living in the NYC metropolitan area are.......the diners. 24x7x365, these places are always open! And, for the most part, the food is really good. Two weeks ago we were in Northern New Jersey and stopped at the Suburban Diner on Route 17. Our son's high school football team played at Bergen Catholic in Oradell. We decided to stop here for a late pre game breakfast. The Suburban Diner did not disappoint. The food and service were really good. I went with the Brunchzilla which was an egg, potato and breakfast meat combo in a tortilla. It was delish! The "cawfee" was great too. My wife and I split and apple crumb after (cheat day) but, I did ogle the lemon meringue pie with the topping of upholstery in the display case. Years ago I would have opted for that but, those days are behind me. The service was speedy and courteous. The "cawfee" cup was always topped off. The parking is narrow, very tight and waits are worth putting your taste buds on hiatus. Ordered the meatloaf sandwich entree. The waitress politely asked me what type of bread I would like to have it on. That is top notch. Along with the sandwich I also was served a tiny (but fresh and delicious) side Caesar salad. The flavors together complemented each others very well. We were in town for memorial service and ate here two days in a row. Impressed by the excellent customer service, generous portions, good quality food. It has everything a classic diner should have including an abundant bakery case full of many sweet treats. I have been coming to suburban since I was a little tike (over 30 years) and I love everything about this diner. It has so much nostalgia for me and it's a place that when my dad visits from the UK he will literally eat at every day he's here. The staff is always nice and welcoming and if you go enough you are sure to have a repeat waiter and become diner friends. Their egg breakfasts are unbeatable when it comes to North Jersey diner food and they are always willing to make the hash browns extra crispy! You can even ask them to burrito wrap an omelette. Their wraps are delicious and pressed in a panini press to make the outside crispy (buffalo chicken and the avocado/Mexican wrap are amazing). My husband loves the Philly cheesesteak panini and why wouldn't he is ooey gooey and steak filled and the fries that come along are delicious. Not to mention the comforting addition of the coleslaw and pickle. Their pancakes and waffles are insanely delicious, but beware you will leave with a big food belly. And their salads are exactly what Elaine meant on Seinfeld when she said she wanted a BIG SALAD! the salads are hearty and unique in all the add-ins and oh so yummy and nourishing. Visiting family and we came for brunch. The menu is vast and varied. With six of us ranging in age from 10 to 60, there was something for everyone. And no one was disappointed. I had the raspberry salad with mixed greens, walnuts, apples, raisins, and strawberries tossed in a raspberry vinaigrette topped with grilled chicken. It fresh, delicious, and plentiful! I couldn't finish it but I took it home to have later. My nephew polished off his Benedict and my niece enjoyed her chicken gyro so much she reviewed it on her food blog. My younger niece had the Red, White, and Blue pancakes with strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. I was at the opposite end of our table, so I can't report on my sister's and brother's meals--only that my sister's breakfast bowl was declared "delicious" and looked bottomless despite her best efforts. Our server was friendly and kind and got our orders right without using pencil and paper. The diner is an appropriate title and matches the setting and decor. I decided to stop here while visiting some family in town. They have a nice selection of food on their menu many different breakfast items you can order even in the evening. They have quite a bit of room for seating there as well. I decided to have the Brooklyn style meal which is a grilled chicken, fried eggplant, roasted red peppers with melted mozzarella cheese and a touch of marinara sauce on a hero roll. I had a fantastic Autumn salad without the feta cheese. It was comprised of: delicious butternut squash with a hint of cinnamon, golden raisins, walnuts, slivers of green apple, salad greens, and a delicious raspberry vinaigrette. Popped in this weekend very early therefore it was almost empty-just the way I like it during Covid. The decor is super cool for a diner. Service was just meh to be honest. The server wasn't very friendly, seemed impatient though we were the only ones there. Food was Ok. I ordered eggs Benedict with crab. I've had better hollandaise sauce elsewhere but it was OK. I've been customer of the suburban Diner forever. I did a review a year ago and complained about the prices. But the prices have continued to rise. I think their food is top-notch. I have never had a bad meal there. You can pick anything off the menu and it will always be cooked beautifully. Their soups are absolutely homemade and delicious. The reason I'm giving only three stars is because this place has become so extraordinarily expensive for a Diner. Believe me I get the fact that costs have gone up tremendously. Inflation has gone through the roof. And I understand that some of it has to be passed on to the Customer. But I was there the other day and I was looking on the menu for something inexpensive and it wasn't impossible to find anything that was inexpensive. A cup of soup is $7. A BLT is $12. A tuna sandwich is $16. When you consider a can of tuna costs $2.50 in the grocery store charging $16 for a scoop of tuna is ridiculous. All that's being added is two slices of bread and some mayo. I don't know why yelp is showing two dollar signs for the cost of this restaurant because it's become ridiculously expensive. It really makes me sad because I can no longer afford to go there. If I ordered a cup of soup and a tuna sandwich, it would cost me $23. With tax and tip a tuna sandwich and a cup of soup would cost $30. That is insane. Everything is relative and should be priced accordingly but it doesn't seem to be. You can't even get an appetizer for under $10. If you have the time go to Matthew's diner in Waldwick, the prices are so much more reasonable and the food is good. Matthew's diner even has a lunch special with select items on the menu. You can get a cup of soup and dessert for a very reasonable price. I don't understand why the suburban can't do a separate menu section with some affordable dishes that people on a fixed income can afford. This breaks my heart to write this review because I truly do love the suburban Diner. I have always enjoyed eating there. The food should be five star rated. The service is usually good, the restaurant is clean and it's attractive looking. But the cost has gone through the roof. read more

Was here last week looking for a quick bite. I know better than to bring expectations to a typical NJ diner. But I do enjoy a surprise. No surprises here. We were seated quickly. My companion ordered some kind of chicken salad with guacamole. I had a BLT with fries. The salad looked none too fresh. Also, it was very lightly dressed. We asked for extra. My coffee was fine. The BLT was just that. Warmed over mediocre bacon that was probably fresh much earlier in the day. The fries were not crisp. I ate a few for filler. Lacking ambience. I have no memory of the decor. I find it a continued source of irritation and disappointment when the owners of places like this lack imagination and energy and make the decision to put forth only the absolute bare minimum of effort regarding the food that they serve. read more

My have things changed.... Subpar food and service. Used to be a pile of pastrami and corned beef, now 4 slices for $16! Dry over priced, over cooked steak. We came here with Hubby's family. My mother-in-law was so happy because she could dine in for lunch with all her children. The place was packed. We went on a Sunday and had to wait about 10 mins, which was not bad at all. Then, we were escorted to the big table in the back. There were a lot of employees, but our waitress was very experienced and professional. She handled most of the tasks. Our plates were not taken away fast enough, so the plates got piled up for a while and no one came to the rescue but the waitress herself. With that many employees, I would figure they would stay alert. I ordered Spinach Benedict with 2 poached eggs and lots of spinach in the bottom on an English muffin. I asked for dressing on the side because hollandaise sauce is not my favorite. I like my benedict with no dressing, naked all the way. If you want to be my benedict, you can't be shy ha! My lunch was awesome! Loved it! Mommy had fruit and jello with cottage cheese. Wow, Mommy's eating healthy! She is. She's 93 going 94 and still goes out dining every week with us. Hubby on the other side had a plate I didn't approve which was processed meat or sausage with eggs over easy. I don't eat processed food, but I was easy on him. So, no divorce. Not yet! I was starving but was also looking for something healthy so I thought diners usually have a good salad list. This one went above and beyond. After choosing the 5 spice salmon salad, I knew I made the right choice. It was literally a huge plate of greens. Probably a whole container full of salad you'd buy at the grocery store. Fresh and crisp baby spinach, lettuce and baby mix. Then a generous portion of grilled salmon on top. Which was not overpowering or too spicy at all. They also added some small chopped mango on top of the fish which was perfect. I was so full I couldn't even finish it. So worth the price, this is probably the best salad here in my opinion and I'll definitely be back to get it again. The service was also nice, the interior is gorgeous for a diner. The first thing I will say about this place is that they started charging their customers a 3% surcharge onto the bill, if, you pay by debit or credit card. The portion size is usually good and the food okay. For me, the salads are their best menu item. The sandwiches can be hit or miss. I've had issues where I have had to send back an item, because they forgot to add something or it wasn't up to my liking. Their fries are actually really good. The one thing this place does well are the deserts. Whomever, their baker is, they're really good. Their cheesecakes are creamy and flavorful. I really enjoy the Baklava Cheesecake. It's worth its weight in gold. Too bad most diner coffee is awful. I've never had great diner coffee. This is one area most places should try and do better. It's a coffee renaissance these days. Very convenient location, right on route 17. Hop off and get a bite. Very large space, lotsa tables. Clean. Good service by the waitress. She was very helpful and nice. The host was impatient, and trying to rush me to a seat when I was checking out the dessert display. Dude, what's the rush? There is a tactful way to be helpful and present without rushing a customer. There were a lot of employees there. I think I counted about 10 wait staff. Then you go to Da Pepo in Montclair and pay 3x the amount with one waitress running around bussing and waiting 12 tables. SMH. Looks like the management at Suburban Diner has not trouble with "worker shortages" and is better at his or her job than the bougie restaurants. My only gripe is the staring. All the male employees were staring at me. It was uncomfortable. It's like they never saw a woman before. I had the meatloaf sandwich with cole slaw and pickle. It was good, but I would not order it again. It had an unusual texture and unusual spice in it (cumin? IDK what it was). I'll tell you what though- the salad options looked epic!
