The host was impatient, and trying to rush me to a seat when I was checking out the dessert display. Dude, what's the rush? There is a tactful way to be helpful and present without rushing a customer. There were a lot of employees there. I think I counted about 10 wait staff. Then you go to Da Pepo in Montclair and pay 3x the amount with one waitress running around bussing and waiting 12 tables. SMH. Looks like the management at Suburban Diner has not trouble with "worker shortages" and is better at his or her job than the bougie restaurants. My only gripe is the staring. All the male employees were staring at me. It was uncomfortable. It's like they never saw a woman before. I had the meatloaf sandwich with cole slaw and pickle. It was good, but I would not order it again. It had an unusual texture and unusual spice in it (cumin? IDK what it was). I'll tell you what though- the salad options looked epic! I woke up Sunday morning and knew what I needed, pancakes. I scrolled and scrolled through door dash and found the suburban diner. I looked through the reviews on Yelp some where hit or miss but what I kept reading was that the PANCAKES were on point. So in Yelp I always trust I ordered the Nutella S'mores pancakes $11.50 and so so worth it. I almost got the waffles but saw the reviews for the pancakes were off the wall. Like all the reviews the pancakes were so soft and moist. Sorry I have to use that word. The Nutella and the marshmallows were an amazing combination. The quality was great but also there was quantity. I had snacks for the whole day! If you're looking for a sweet treat for breakfast or even a dessert. The Nutella s'mores pancakes are to die for! I really don't like mediocre-to-bad reviews about mom & pop businesses, except there are other mom & pop places around these parts that do a much better job across the board. First things first, no one here seems to smile ... except for our server, a young guy, who cracked a smile as part of a mea culpa (after he forgot to come see us for a while -- after all, he had three tables, so I see how he could forget about us). But seriously, no one was rude. I just felt like we'd walked into a George Orwell novel when we walked through the door. And it remained the same throughout our visit. The food here is ... mediocre. At best. We came here after a day in NYC. This place was our after-Broadway late-night destination. Two people in our party had dessert and coffee, ad both of them seemed happy. My wife had a BLT and I ordered a NJ sloppy joe. Both were executed poorly. Perhaps it's the house recipe. Maybe it's the overnight cook, but BLTs should come with (at least) a side of mayo. And you never serve a NJ sloppy joe with the coleslaw side down, else those bottom slices of bread turn into bread pudding, as mine did. Also, since when does a place not put cheese on a NJ sloppy joe? Or not use rye? -- Now, please keep in mind that I would never ask these questions if we'd dined at a joint in Oklahoma. The food here was like going to Texas for barbecue, and getting grilled roast beef with barbecue sauce. It just didn't taste like the real thing. Started as a small train car back in the 1950s serving great American classics food for decades on Route 17 North in Paramus, today it's renovated and modern diner which my partner and I came for dinner tonight. Despite the Mother's Day celebration, there were plenty of parking spaces. Upon arrival, the inside of the Suburban Diner is modern and spacious whose center is around the bar but the main attraction is its bakery goods. We were greeted by our server Pat who was friendly and attentive. The menu includes everything from eggs to burgers, sandwiches to pastas. We ordered the fried chicken in a basket accompanied with fries and a cup of cream of Turkey soup as well as the Suburban salad consisting of Mixed Greens tossed with Roasted Peppers, Artichoke Hearts, Fresh Mozzarella, Kalamata Olives, Cherry Tomatoes, Onions with a Roasted Pepper Garlic Dressing. Unfortunately the cream of Turkey soup was not the best I had as they used corn starch to thicken instead of a roux with its buttery taste. The fried chicken consisted of a half chicken cut into 4 pieces which were tasty, crispy and moist. The fries were served hot and very crispy. The salad was fresh, huge portion but some of the artichokes were tough. One of us had room for their double chocolate cake which was rich but mostly frosting. All in all, classic style diner with reasonable prices, nice portions and friendly staff which we can recommend it. read more

I gave this place 3 tries and all three times they have messed up orders. Two times we ordered Reuben sandwiches and they did not give thousand island dressing with it, which is one of the main ingredients and therefore made it dry. We asked for the fries well done and they were barely cooked. They charge $17 for a souvlaki platter which is just 2 skewers of chicken and a side Greek salad. I asked for no tomatoes or onions in my salad and the entire salad was onions and tomatoes, barely any lettuce or dressing in it. I've been dining in for years and truly never had a bad meal! Their menu is quite extensive satisfying many palates. On this visit I went with their special breakfast bowl which consisted of home fries, peppers, jalapeños, onions, avocado, cheese, steak and eggs! It was a huge portion and super delicious! I would have preferred my steak pieces to be more on the medium rare side, but it did not deter me from stuffing my face! My family ordered an omelette, the bbq bacon burger and a simple order of eggs and sausage. We also ordered toasted bagels as they have this nice crunch on the outside and never taste stale. I've never ordered a cocktail here, but I did see many kicking back a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa! Their dessert just looks incredible! Huge glass display cases upon entering just blow your mind away and you can't help, but find room to include one slice of heaven at some point! Huge parking lot. We came here at the last minute on a Saturday afternoon for brunch and was pleasantly surprised. I was forewarned that their pancakes were nothing to rave about, but we found that the pancakes basically stole the show! Was it a new recipe? Was it a more skilled chef in the kitchen? Whatever it was, we all gobbled up the pancakes from my daughter's children's meal. We all really enjoyed the pancakes and look forward to coming here again the next time we are in town. We went for a late night dinner on a Thursday, most places still close pretty early but Suburban is open until 11! We got there around 10:30 and we very happy they were able to accommodate us. This place is a literal mixed bag for me! Pros: We were seated within reason, due to the ample seating on a Saturday January night. Husband and I were also served within reason, with timely refills on coffee and iced teas. The large menu has something for everyone, and our entrees were good, but didn't knock our socks off. Cons: Hostess insisted on herding those waiting to be seated into an extremely tiny space, away from current diners, as if we were cattle. Breadsticks that we ordered never came to our table. The waiter messed up our salad orders, but we were able to just switch plates ourselves, especially since it was a busy time. The desserts are overrated and overpriced, as our jumbo chocolate chip cookie was stale and solid as a rock aka the equivalent of one you would get at NY Penn Station. This meant that we had to use our hands to break up the cookie to dip in our ice cream. $9 was a major rip off! Speaking of such, as others have mentioned, there is a 3% fee charged for credit cards on top of your bill, which is already overpriced; my wrap was good but maybe worth $13 at most, not $17! Rating Suburban diner on just one visit is tough. If I could give half stars, I'd give this 3 1/2. On the pro side, their menu is huge and definitely has something for everyone. Their cake and pie case looks amazing too! I wish I could have taken one of everything! If I lived closer, I think this would be a dangerous place for me! We were there on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. I ordered a delicious London broil panini and the avocado egg rolls. I liked the egg rolls quite a bit but others thought they were bland. The fries were really great!! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My one complaint is that the waters weren't refilled as often as they should have been. I think for as empty as the place was it would have been nice for the waiter to be a little more aware of drinks. Another note on the menu is that the format isn't extremely user friendly. You kind of have to hunt for what you're looking for. Overall, I'd go back and actually hope to so that I can get a better feel for the place. read more

We couldn't decide what we wanted for dinner, so a diner was the logical choice. As we sat down, a waiter brought us water and asked if we wanted any drinks. The menu was quite extensive, with many types of food. I opted for a tuna sandwich and hubby opted for a meatloaf sandwich. The tuna was quite good. It had celery an mayo and that was it, the way I like it! Hubby enjoyed the meatloaf. He liked that it was thin sliced. Both sandwiches.were huge! The fries were crispy and delicious and it greasy at all. There was a fully stocked bar and many interesting adult drinks on the menu. I wasn't certain which one of us was driving home, so I didn't indulge. The selection of deaaetwas amazing, but I decided not to indulge there either. I would definitely go back! Not sure if I have changed or they have changed. Many years ago when I lived her this was our go to diner. The classic NJ diner experience. Nothing was really great but nothing was really bad. Fast forward 15 years I find myself revisiting my old standby. Service, decor, etc was exactly what you want and expect from a diner. Then the food came. The food was really poor. Cheap ingredients, oversized portions, bland flavors. The best plate on the table was the slaw and pickle. Like I said maybe it's me, maybe this place was always like this. This was our family's first Jersey diner experience (we were visiting from Chicago). We came for dinner and we all loved the food (Greek combo for my husband, salmon pasta for me, ravioli & mac & cheese for our kids). I got a piece of key lime pie to go and it was also fabulous. The service is excellent and the ambience is fun. There were lots of families there. We ate at several diners during our trip, but our top 2 were Suburban in Paramus and Marvis on the Jersey Shore. I have eaten here a few times for lunch and found this place to be a very good diner. There is plenty of parking, plenty of seating and the decor is nice. I recently had the eggs Benedict with corned beef hash and home fries. It was very good. They even throw in a sliced strawberry and a tad of spinach on my plate. The home fries were cooked well. My buddy and I frequent Suburban diner, and the last three visits weren't very pleasant. My experience today is the reason why I am writing this review. Our waitress was extremely forgetful. She did not write down our order, and returned to our table 10 minutes later to confirm our order. During our 36 minute wait for our simple order of two pizza burgers, not once she did come by our table to check in, or remind us that our food is on its way. When our food finally arrived, she forgot to bring our drinks. A few minutes into my dinner, I noticed there was mold on my bread. I pointed that out to the shift manager and he quickly discarded my food. (I wish I took a picture of the mold first before calling the manager.) He was able to comp for my meal, but based on the poor customer service our waitress provided, everything should have been free. read more

I had higher hopes from suburban because it looks much fancier than other diners however I will give them two stars for cleanliness and a good service. Their food was subpar and below mediocre. The slider chicken was so hard that I was not able to cut it with a knife and fork. Mozzarella sticks were decent but cold. I don't understand why southwest sliders had American cheese on it ?! I probably should've checked other peoples reviews before I ordered food however it was something I did on a whim and went in with full faith that the food would be like any other diner food. I have no idea how they have such high ratings. I went for breakfast this morning and got a omelette with tomatoes and onions. The omelette had cheese only in the fold so the majority of the omelette had no cheese. The home fries were hard and tasteless and the toast had margarine or cheap butter. Also my unsweetened iced tea was sour so you know it's been sitting for a while. The cashier asked me how it was and I told her it was horrible and for the prices it should be quality. We all usually order some variation on the half sandwich with french fries and soup. My standard is the half turkey sandwich on rye bread with french fries and matzo ball soup. At our last visit, it was on the menu for $8.95 and at that price, you really can't beat it! A pretty standard diner staple, the soup can either be flavorful broth and firm matzo balls. The sandwich is well put together, the produce crisp and the turkey deli-fresh. The fries are thick cut, crispy and tasty. One fall afternoon, we decided to splurge and order the caramel apple margaritas on drink special. They were absolutely delicious and exactly what we needed. On our next visit, they had of course been replaced by the next drink specials, but we were missing them something terrible. The waiter relayed our order to the bartender, who became the hero of the hour when he managed to produce three of the caramel apple margaritas we were all craving. Classic diner food done right. The Suburban Diner has infamously been charging a 3% credit card surcharge fee to BOTH credit and DEBIT CARD transactions. However, surcharge fees are strictly limited to credit card transactions ONLY. Even if a client wishes to run a signature debit transaction, where a debit card is processed as a credit transaction, you are still NOT allowed to implement a surcharge. They tried this with me yesterday. I informed them that what they were doing was unethical much less illegal. This discussion went nowhere. Consumer beware of this establishment that post-pandemic has become way overpriced for a diner. Factor in tax, tip and if you pay with a credit or debit card, the 3% surcharge; and good luck to you. Perhaps they'll change their tune if consumers factor in that 3% hit into the gratuity we leave for service. I'm currently disputing this with my financial institution. It's really not the money as much as it is the principle. read more

I don't know why the reviews aren't 5 stars because I had such a great experience ordering takeout from here. First off- I ordered 11 meals for lunch and ALL of them were correct with no mistakes! Price is a little high for diner prices, but WELL WORTH IT considering portion sizes are so big! Each meal definitely was worth 2 separate meals! I loved the variety and appreciated that there were both vegetarian and vegan options. For vegan option, I ordered the Mediterranean salad without olives and feta cheese, and a side of sweet potato fries. Many of the salads can be made vegan, and there was also veggie burger and veggie wrap options that can be made vegan! I ordered brunch from the Suburban Diner off Uber eats. I ordered the crab cake Benedict and it was absolutely delightful. Crab cake was lumpy, juicy, and flavorful, just how I liked it. Benedict was perfect, and eggs cooked perfectly. I took one star off because the home fries were completely bland, you will definitely need the salt and pepper they package in the bag. I appreciated the fact that the hollandaise sauce was packaged separately , so that the Benedict didn't get soggy. Would definitely try other items from here, but I think I found my new Sunday morning dine at home brunch spot! read more

We have been to this diner many times before. We have watched the prices go up and up and the service go down and down. Guess customers have to pay for the new outdoor patio addition they are building. The food is above average but overpriced (can't screw up salad too much). Today's service was a comedy of errors. Our waiter was hard of hearing, the coffee was bad because the half and half had gone bad ruining the brew, and the Tiramisu was old and stale. To top things off our waiter gave our check to the next table and they paid it. This required a long discussion at checkout about the bill.
