This is the last restaurant you'll encounter before you leave the Delaware beach area, an area that can get ridiculously crowded during the summer months. If you want crabs, avoid the busier districts and park yourself at Surfing Crab. The first thing I noticed was the packed parking lot as we pulled in just before 5pm on a Monday. While the parking lot is deeper at second glance, it made us second guess our decision to eat here for a moment. The restaurant had a decent number of patrons, but we were able secure a socially distanced table in the dining room for crab eaters. There is an all-you-can-eat option for $59 (2-hour time limit). We opted to get two kid's mac n cheese meals, a 2-lb order of snow crabs (with two sides), and a half dozen medium steamed crabs for $52.50. Now, you're probably thinking that I could have gotten all I wanted (for 2 hours) for $6.50 more. However, with two young children, I didn't think they'd survive 2 hours of me digging through crabs. The server guaranteed properly sized and meaty mediums, so I just went with that. Call ahead might have been helpful, but about 20 minutes later, my piping hot 1/2 dozen crabs came out! They were indeed very sizable for mediums and meaty as promised. It took me over an hour to finish them all and they did fill me up. I was planning on eating some crabs and some snow crab legs, but I was too busy with the blue crabs that I had no time to sample her entree. I did try her sides (cole slaw & seasonal veggies). The seasonal veggies (yellow & green squash and mushrooms) were grilled and had a garlic flavor to it. I would highly recommend it. Crab prices vary from season to season, and the price tag here wasn't cheap. But I was extremely satisfied with the eating experience. read more

Best crabs everrrrr! Hot, seasoned well, and most of the back fins and legs when pulled cane with clumps of juicy, hot meat. I cyaaant wait to go back. Will almost drive the 2 hours to get there, but will include a beach day to make it worth it. Cost $50 and I ate 12-14, so worth the price. Tried hard not to fill up on the hush puppies fries and slaw. I was the for blue crabs. Nice cold beer. No wait to be seated. Took less than 10 min for first fresh batch to come out. Surfin crab is usually good but the last two times, I visited I had two disturbing experiences. One experience is when a waitress yelled and scolded a young black woman because her phone was too loud. A simple excuse me mam, can you please keep it down would have sufficed but I believe as black people we have a super power to recognize racially motivated behavior and this was it. As previously stated, I was visiting this establishment on average twice a week. My most recent visit they attempted to give me medium size crabs instead of the larges I was paying for. I told the waitress who did nothing for 30 minutes and then I requested a manager. The manager never came and instead sent the waitress back who stated, "The manager said they are the correct size," and he wasn't going to speak with me. I have spent a nice amount of money at this establishment but the one time when I had a concern, I wasn't even good enough to be spoken to directly. I scoured through yelp for days on end to find the best crab place in the Rehobeth-Lewes-Dewey area and decided on the Surfing Crab. As we were driving down to the beach, we passed by the restaurant and my bf said "Oh you could not pay me to eat at a random crab shop on the side of the highway." Little did he know THAT'S EXACTLY WHERE WE ENDED UP THE NEXT DAY! Try grabbing seating outdoors. Super breezy compared to the indoors. Ambiance is definitely chill, picnic, family vibes. Service was attentive. When it comes to seafood, I'm not here to play. I could eat crabs into extinction. I was debating between all you can eat crabs which came with an order of fries/hush puppies for $65/pp but decided to do 1/2 dozen between my boyfriend and I for $52.50. We ordered the select crabs (which was a 20-25 minute wait) and jumbo lump crab cake mac and cheese which came out first. The mac and cheese was if kraft mac and cheese used REAL cheese. It was good, nothing mind blowing but the CRAB CAKE! So crispy. Each time we went in for a bite, a jumbo lump crab meat would just pop off. It was the real deal, no fillers. Not bad for $27.50. While waiting for the crabs, the table next to us ordered mussels and the aroma of white wine garlic sauce wafted over and the next thing you know I blacked out and ordered it. The sauce was so creamy but still retained the taste of the sweet mussel juice. The main event however was definitely the crabs. My favorite part is definitely the mustard (only the real ones know). Crabs had minimal mustard however they were heavy and packed with firm crab meat. The claws were also firm and juicy as well. Even the individual legs were thicc and had good meat in them. I literally did not talk to my bf for a full hour as I was hammering away and cracking these crabs open. When I was finally done, I was COVERED in old bay and crab shards. So worth eating at a random crab joint on the side of the highway. read more

You can't make a reservation beforehand, the wait for food can be tremendously long. Even the prices of the crabs are fairly high unless you're participating in the all you can eat option. Having ordered the half dozen jumbos, I was certainly satisfied with the big, delicious and highly addicting old bay seasoned crabs. The fried oyster were also very well made; they were not soggy with oil and breaded lightly enough that i could still taste the oyster. I enjoyed the contrast between the rich, fried oysters and the sweet, delicate crab meat. This place is great, but be prepared to spend a lot and wait a lot. read more

We had a delicious dinner last night at Surfing Crab. We have eaten here several times and it's always very good. Last night we started with the fried shrimp and deviled eggs appetizers. Our three entrees were two generous size blackened Mahis, and fried shrimp. Our waitress was very attentive with drinks, and was able to accomodate us when we changed a side of fries for their delicious hush puppies. Most people enjoy coming to crack crabs. It is always busy in the summer. Luckily we live nearby and enjoy the casual friendly atmosphere here. read more

Went their tonight for a solo meal after spending time in Cape Henlopen State Park. I got the mussels and an order of the hush puppies. Both came out super fast and hot. The muscles come in a ton of garlic-wine broth, good enough to treat like console with the nice loaf of bread. Service was good. I was really jealous of the amazing plates of blue crabs coming out. The only issue I had was the un-airconditioned or under airconditioned bar area. With the amount of activity and people in the restaurant, it made for a sweaty meal. The best crabs in the Lewes / Rehobeth area, hands down! Note: the crabs are shipped up from Louisiana, some people have an issue with this. Not me, the crabs are fabulous. First meal in Delaware and we weren't disappointed! My friend and I ordered the fried shrimp basket, half a dozen of crabs and a cream of crab soup. I'd definitely recommend getting the fried shrimp! Very crispy and the sauce is perfect. The crabs were also really fresh, and we found that three large crabs each was just the right amount. The soup was a bit too salty for my liking but the flavor was there and it had a sizeable portion of crab meat in the center. I still smell like crab hours after dinner, but I don't regret it! Absolutely disrespectful the wife who was also the hostess was nasty and after waiting 3 hours and still never served even after sitting at table we never even had anyone come to greet us or even offer water. We decided after a 3 hour wait to leave. Great experience! Our waiter was attentive and knew how to place an order so that it was spaced out. The people in our party received the crabs first, as they knew others would finish their food before they were done with the crabs. Food was excellent - scallops, fish and chips and kids chicken tenders were all cooked perfectly. You are not going for the ambiance, you are going for the food!
