I had this restaurant recommended to me, and it did not disappoint. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday in Rehoboth, and luckily I made reservations about a week in advance. When we checked in, the manager was incredibly friendly. I mentioned it was my daughter's birthday and asked if we could sit outside. He gave us the best table in the restaurant, right on the front corner overlooking the boardwalk. The service was excellent. Our waiter was dressed as Santa Claus, had a great sense of humor, and made fantastic recommendations. He suggested the pomegranate margarita, which was outstanding. I ordered the bowl, my wife had the fish tacos, and my daughter enjoyed the kids meal with chicken nuggets and fries. To top it all off, they surprised my daughter with a complimentary slice of birthday cake, which was probably the highlight of the meal for her. Overall, the atmosphere here is incredible and is easily the restaurant's biggest draw. Sitting outside, overlooking the boardwalk while watching the sun set over the ocean, is hard to beat. Came here because of the good ratings, so I had high hopes. The oysters were good, the calamari was good, and the shrimp was good. Everything was decent except for my seafood linguini. Unfortunately, it was underwhelming--the noodles were overcooked, and the sauce lacked flavor and depth. It honestly tasted like melted butter and wasn't good at all. I ended up having to return it. We arrived at around 1pm and were sat on the upstairs balcony right away. We had a really nice lunch overlooking the ocean. See pic. Great happy hour with $1.50 oysters! I had to get 6 and loved them. My wife and I shared a fish sandwich, where we substituted the hush puppies for a house side salad. We also shared the fried zucchini appetizer. Honestly a really bad experience saved solely by the ambiance. We came in for dinner last week and overall just had not a great experience. Initially things were good upon sitting down, however once we ordered things turned. We ordered appetizers and entrees yet all of the food was brought at once. Any wait staff should know that these things are to be spaced out as our table was then so crowded it was borderline impossible to access anything as there was already copious signage and other items on the table. By the time we finished our apps our entrees were cold and unenjoyable. Personally I had the snow crab legs which were fine, albeit skimpy on meat, and some oysters which were some of the worst oysters I have ever had in conjunction with mignonette that was so watery it tasted nothing like vinegar - I had the entire table try it and everyone was shocked. While our waitress was very kind with lovely energy she didn't really seem to understand how to properly service a table. The ambiance here is great I must say. Overlooking the water really did help save this meal from being a complete dud but overall I doubt we will be back. read more

This was a cute ocean view restaurant. The inside of the restaurant as so nice, the decide gave beach vibes and luckily for us it wasn't crowded. The best menu item that stood out to us was the Garlic Shrimp Bread Bowl. The shrimp were huge, the sauce was creamy and garlicky, and the bread was toasted and soft. So if you need a starter, I highly recommend getting that. read more

Came here with a large group and we all loved both the food and the ambiance! One member of our group is gluten-free and loved the larger Gf-menu. I loved that there were several really good vegan options as well. We sat on the rooftop, with a great view of the ocean. I would definitely recommend this place for a large group! My one rec would be that it was a little hard to seat our larger group on the roof- there were restrictions about which areas different servers correspond to, which felt a little unnecessary. The waiter was kind and asked if she wanted anything else or remove from the check. She made a smart move and didn't order anything else. My lobster meat was fine. The pasta came out cold and the plate lukewarm. The cheese ravioli lacked much flavor perhaps would have been better hot. I let the waiter know it was cold. We came here based on recommendations. Honestly it was nothing like I expected. It was a sticky sports Ike bar. The tables were sticky- it's damp inside- which isn't surprising considering it's on a beach. The food was okay. The crab dip was the best thing but the chips were few and stale. The fried shrimp Tacos had 5 pieces of shrimp total which were totally over fried. They were laid on a heaping of cabbage. The Maryland crab soup was fine- nothing to write home about. Hello, I would like to add my experience dining at above the dunes. We were looking forward to enjoying an evening with friends - 6 of us. We wished to sit outside with our friends but was promptly told by the host (hostess?) we couldn't tell, that we could only be 5. It was strange because there was plenty of room to enjoy our drinks. We then asked to be seated at a high top by the bar. We were then told you can, but you must eat fast. WTF! We were served drinks but the host was hovering over us and pressuring us to leave. They were glad to take our money and we would have gladly had more spirits and food but the pressure was just too much. The experience can only be described as traumatic. I don't just need a therapist--I need one of those little anatomy dolls so I can point to exactly where this experience damaged my soul. read more

We had a neighborhood ladies lunch here with about 20 woman. First off I have to say, the view is the best! It is an open layout with plenty of room which was nice. We had two servers and the one I had was excellent. She got all our drinks and orders taken and was quick to return with our orders. As far as food goes, I would say that was a mixed bag. I personally had a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, my go to order for lunch. Unfortunately it was drowned in dressing and I am someone who likes dressing. A few of the ladies had the burgers and loved them and someone else had the pokey bowl and said it was good too. I would like to come back and try something else and enjoy the view. I'll start with the positive. The location right on the beach is great. The service was also great. Our server was on it. Attentive but not hovering over us and she was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, that's where the positivity ends. When this place fails, it is because the food sucks. Our edamame was so covered with salt that it was inedible. How do you screw that up? Tuna on crispy rice - I'd say that the tuna itself was not bad but the "crispy" rice just wasn't and that wrecks the dish. My main was gumbo and it was effectively a thin broth that was so salty that I could feel my blood pressure rise as I ate it. Totally inedible and arrived at the table not remotely hot. My daughter got a chicken bowl where the "jerk" chicken had no seasoning at all, the "roasted" broccoli wasn't roasted and the beans and corn were served cold. "Drive along the sea Far from the city's twitch and smoke That's where my life became a joke On the dunes" (Donald Fagan) Next time you're strolling down the Rehoboth boardwalk, look up way high over the boardwalk level stores and snack bars, because over them all is a very sweet restaurant named Above the Dunes. When you enter from the street level, a staircase points you up to the second floor that opens up into a huge dining room and bar. The dining room has a gorgeous baby blue color scheme for its furniture and tablescapes, and after our meal we also noticed that color scheme extended to their eye catching and very distinctive exterior lighting. So, if you're on the boardwalk at night, you sure can't miss it. The menu is heavy on all types of seafood with tacos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and steaks for the non-seafood crowd. I started off with a Maryland Crab soup ($10) that was jam packed with tender crab meat in a delicious broth with diced carrots and potatoes. We both went to the salad menu for a Caribbean Bowl ($19) with Jerk chicken, pineapple, rice, roasted broccoli, corn salsa, pico, and Cajun ranch dressing and an ATD Chicken Salad ($15) with house made chicken salad with grapes, celery, almonds, mayo, and old bay, over a bed of lettuce. My Caribbean Bowl was excellent. What a mix of colors and textures and tastes! Every component was delicious, especially the fresh pineapple and jerk spiced chicken. Service from Evan was fine, he was quick with our water and refills and a mid-meal checkback. Thank you Above the Dunes for making our last dinner in Rehoboth such a pleasant experience. My friend and I could not decide where to go for dinner and since we both never been here we decided to give it a whirl. When we got upstairs we thought it was pretty cool and pretty atmosphere. It took a little time for a waiter to come over to take our order. I knew exactly what I wanted pretty quickly. I seem to be on a caprese kick on my visit to Rehoboth this time around so, I figured why not give the Chicken caprese a try. For some reason, not sure why or how I thought I was getting a salad and then after my dish came I saw on menu that it comes on a bun and with chips. So, I guess I got a chicken caprese sandwich, which I had never seen before on a menu. It looked pretty sad and when I tried to cut through it, it was a bit hard too and I felt like it was not cooked all the way. The cheese too itself was a bit hard to cut and that was odd. And I asked for the balsamic glaze on the side and I saw there was some balsamic on the cheese. When I saw the side of balsamic vinegar in its container it was like a drop. I was just totally confussed by this dish as a whole. I told our waiter and he asked if I wanted something else or for it to be off the check which was nice of him to ask. I went with that option. My friend got lobster ravioli which came out cold at first. She sent it back to be warmed up more. When it came back again it still was not that hot/warm and she said that the lobster was good but ravioli itself was not good. This place also seemed a bit disorganized and like there was no order to it. Also, when I went to the restroom, it seemed that the floor was a bit slippery and I could see some spots of water possibly or something. I thought it was my shoes but my friend said how she could see something. There was also some crumbs and food under our table so makes me ask myself if they cleaned before we sat down. There is a nice view of the ocean and the beach from this restaurant especially if you sit by the window or even in their outside deck area. We also saw many groups here like what could be birthdays and bachelorette parties. So it seemed like a good place for that. Maybe my friend and I ordered the wrong choices here because everyone else's food that we saw come out looked appetizing. Located right off the boardwalk, we stopped in here during our first visit to Rehobeth Beach, actually it was our first stop. My wife and I ordered a couple of cocktails to start from our friendly waitress, an Orange Crush for her and a Tanqueray Martini for me to go along with some 1.50 Happy Hour Oysters, fresh and delicious from VA. After enjoying our great drinks and oysters we ordered lunch. My wife ordered the Fish Sandwich, beer battered haddock along with some hush puppies and I went with the Boston Lobster Roll, served just like I like it with butter and lemon, both were excellent. The portions are miniscule...a four dollar upcharge for fries got me literally 4 waffle fries and some crumbs...the chicken breast was so small it barely covered half the dried out bun...the tomato slices were mealey and calling those slivers a slice is generous...they had the nerve to charge 19.00 for that sad excuse of a Caprese sandwich...the place is filthy too...the dust was falling from the ceiling on our table, the bathrooms were gross, which is indicative of a dirty kitchen as well...the service was slow at a slow lunch time...the menus were dirty and sticky with food caked on them...the cleaner they use on the tables leaves behind a sickly toxic smell that's nauseating...I realize this is a "seafood" restaurant, but if you can't do the basics I don't trust them to do fish...my brother, against my warning, ordered the French Dip...it should be called the French Roadkill...dried, leathery burnt pieces of a meat like substance left over from the Nixon administration...you've been warned! We went for lunch and the music was not too loud and we were fortunate enough to be seated right by the windows without a reservation (coming in the off-season helps with this of course).
