Great service and delicious food. Didn't expect sushi in McCall to be such good quality :)

Again, I'm a Texan in Idaho for the Summer. Imagine my delight to find this gem of a place overlooking the Lake in Downtown McCall. I'm so happy great sushi in a wonderful setting. You could not ask for a better location to view the Lake Activity while you dine. A wonderful patio overlooks the lake and the HUB of town down below. The prices here are extremely reasonable. Our waiters on all of our visits great and seemed to know a lot about Japan and the food they were serving- PLUS. Everything we had on very visit was very good. We love sushi and we love this place. This place has one of the most extensive beer menus I have ever seen. I thought I might be at a microbrewery and again the prices for beer and wine were dare I say, cheap??? I guess I kind of expect to pay for an overpriced drink when I'm setting in a tourist area with a view. Well not here. On our second visit my husband ordered a beer that had recently been put in the cooler. IT had not had time to get ice cold. When he asked for a cold mug, The waitress reluctantly told us she had none as they were a "Green Dining Establishment". She promptly returned with a little clear bin filled with ice to keep his bottle on ice at our table. I was super impressed by this. My husband was a little embarrassed as he must have appeared to be very high maintenance. But I know he was happy about it. Great service!! Great food. Check out the bathroom sink- cool!! They are part of some Green Dining Initiative, I hope this starts a trend. read more

I make it a point to eat at this restaurant every weekend I spend up in McCall. The location is great and the balcony has a great view of the small lake town that is McCall, Idaho. Try to eat here during sunset and ask to sit outside - it's worth the summer sun's heat. I haven't tried a sushi roll here that I didn't love, but the Shrimpzilla will forever be my favorite. Although the wait can be long after ordering the food, it's definitely worth it. read more

The sushi is pretty good, but not rolled correctly. It keeps trying to come apart. They have a small selection of rolls for Happy Hour 4 to 6. Wish that was a little larger selection. Overall pretty good though! read more

Everything is relative when you're in a rural community but notwithstanding this place would be a gem in any town or city. Great rolls, wide variety of beers in bottle/draft and Pho Saturday/Sundays. In general I feel most seafood restaurants this far inland would be pretty sketchy but this place is pretty epic now that I think about it. The service is spotty at times but just order a few drinks and you will always walk away satisfied. read more

I begged my boyfriend to go out for sushi with me while we were in the wilds of Idaho--a place where he likes to grill salmon and eat steaks and potatoes. That's what summers in Idaho are all about for him. And he AGREED to go. That's how I knew he loved me. Coming from the SF Bay Area, we were initially a little skeptical (really? how good could sushi be in a city where the Asian population was probably in the low double digits?) but we were pleasantly surprised. Wowza, that was good. I've enjoyed a decent amount of sushi in my food-eating career, but the dishes my fiancé and I ordered here were particularly excellent. We both ordered bento lunch specials, but with different choices of sushi roll. She went for a spectacular ginger roll, while I wanted to see this bar's take on the Classic California roll. The portions were perfectly-sized: Enough to fill you up, but not deter you from a nice walk through downtown afterwards. All in all, it was a fantastic meal, with an incredible view of the frozen lake from our table on the 2nd floor overlook. The big standout was surprisingly the Miso soup! I can confidently say we both agreed it was the best Miso we've ever had! The salad was also extremely fresh and delicious. The only caveat would be the Mochi we were recommended from the dessert menu. It's a 6 piece dish of rice cakes that contain red bean ice cream. My fiancé was immediately put-off by the texture & flavor of the rice cake, which I would actually liken more to a marshmallow-flavored "cup" with a hard boiled egg-like consistency. I actually wound up enjoying it, but they were so cold I would think twice about eating each one in a single bite again....So, if marshmallows aren't your thing, think twice before ordering that dish. As a dessert alternative, the Honey Bread sounded fantastic but we didn't get a chance to try it. As a final note: The menu offered some great drink options including "make your own floats", Japanese beer and a wide sake selection, including mixologist concoctions. We'll definitely be stopping here whenever we visit McCall from now on! read more

Waited for an hour and 15 minutes. Person at the door seated multiple parties behind us on the list ahead of us after repeatedly promising us a table. Spent most of the time chatting with locals who he let in ahead of us. We even called ahead and were told the wait would be 30 mins. Some of the most disappointing service I have ever received. It's been a while since I've been this insulted by a restaurant. Pretty pathetic. read more

We had a terrible experience and I will never support this restaurant again! I made a reservation, in person, for the next night. After receiving a text to confirm the reservation for a table for three at 5:30 pm as requested, we showed up on time. The hostess showed us to our table, but it was NOT a table but a very small bar area outside with bar stools. I politely asked if we could sit somewhere else, explained that I made a reservation in person for a table. The hostess took me back inside and the manager was VERY rude. She told me that it was my fault! She said that when I made the reservation online that I should have noted that I was not interested in bar seating. I explained again that I made the reservation IN PERSON and that my mother who is almost 80 years old can't sit on a barstool to eat dinner . She said that there was nothing that she could do and refused to honor our 5:30pm reservation for a table. This is not how you treat customers. read more

Worst restaurant experience to date in my life! We were in town for a bachelorette party and went into the restaurant and we were told to come back in 45 min. We informed the hostess that we would go across the street for a drink since they didn't have enough seating for our group downstairs. When we arrived back 40 min later we were told 'they didn't expect us to come back and that they are closing now because they had a "rough" weekend. When we asked to speak to a manager she arrived stomping her feet and smacking her hands and said we should have called in advance and if she "let's" us upstairs we have to order immediately and all at once. Other patrons visiting that overheard all of this stated the food was good but not worth the poor customer service they also received so we decided to just leave read more

I was pleasantly surprised by The Sushi Bar. I have been to many sushi places in Idaho that I have heard great things about, and have been disappointed by mediocre sushi. This place is not one of those. I read the reviews about this restaurant and it received great reviews so I had to check it out. I was not disappointed in the slightest. In fact, I told my wife the next time we are in McCall we HAVE to come back. I don't mean to sound like a sushi snob, but I am Japanese and was born and raised on the island of O'ahu. Whoever the sushi chef is at The Sushi Bar, I applaud you. My miso soup was also amazing! I can't wait to try some of the other foods they offer! read more

I just wanted to follow-up and say, my experience here was good and like I said, for being in a rural area like McCall I think the sushi was better than most would expect. However, in comparing to the Northern and Central California sushi restaurants I am accustomed to, it just can't compare. Perhaps this is an unfair judgement as most Idahoans would not have this to compare too. I have eaten at many restaurants here that provide sashimi cuts that are to die for! Combinations of flavors I could never dream up. I love a restaurant that provides the unexpected. I'm not creative enough to think of how to even come up with these ideas. I don't need cream cheese and other sauces masking the goodness underneath ( in fact I am recently dairy and soy free). read more

Worst dining experience ever. We were told we could get drinks while we waited for our table, but no one showed up to serve us. When we got our table, our waitress took a long time to bring our drinks and forgot to bring water. Our food took almost an hour to arrive, and the sushi had sat by the bar for nearly 40 minutes getting dry. When we complained they compted one round of sodas and dessert. Then we waited another 30 minutes for dessert, they were out of ice cream, and they burned the honey toast while we watched the wait staff do shots in the kitchen. Empty plates and glasses stacked on our table and no one cleared them until we asked. To top it off, the waitress forgot our share plates completely so we had to pass the dessert plate. We get very good sushi in the Seattle area so I was a little afraid to try Idaho sushi! But it wasn't bad at all. We had the Kobe beef starter which was okay but wouldn't buy it again and two rolls and a ahi shashimi. The shrimp Zilla was the best of the bunch. Spicy tuna roll wasn't bad either. Nice ambiance. Service was good. The server, who was vegan told us the Kobe beef was very good. Haha read more

My husband and I were eager to try the Sushi Bar in McCall after hearing lots of positive word of mouth from friends and others. Unfortunately, contrary to what other people have said we were disappointed in our visit yesterday evening. It was a busy Friday night, even at 8:30. We ordered the $30 Sushi for Two which included edamame appetizer, miso soup, and two rolls: one our choice and the other, Chef's choice. The edamame was slightly under-cooked and we never received our miso soup (which we didn't realize until this morning). The sushi rolls, however, were teeny -- what you would see for a simple avocado or cucumber roll. We ordered the Shrimpzilla roll, and Chef's choice was a ginger salmon roll ... Both of which were fine, but it would have been nice to try something different than what our dining partner ordered. There was a great selection of reasonably priced beer and wine, which could have been the reason my husband left a $20 tip for a $77 tab! All in all, it was a pretty mediocre experience -- mediocre food and mediocre service. read more

Since I moved to Idaho, I have heard multiple people rave about the sushi bar in McCall. My husband and I finally made it to McCall and thus had to try out this place. I thought the sushi was good and so was the shrimp tempura rice noodle bowl we got. But thats just it...everything was good as expected. Nothing was great, it was all just normal. Surprisingly very good sushi and the dessert was DA BOMB! Beautiful view and very friendly service. We didn't run into any of the issues that some of the other posts. At first when we got here we were skeptical about how fresh it could really be but it was delicious and we are from CA. We had the Poke, cucumber salad, shrimp tempura rice bowl (which was a hit for the kids), spring fever roll and spicy salmon roll. The honey toast is a must have! All local ingredients and definitely big enough to share for a table of 4-6. Don't leave without trying it. read more

Very interesting place. Was spoken to rudely the first night when the tall blonde hostess told us 2hr wait. "No problem" I said. The place was busy, I get it. The 2nd night same scenario, (same tall blonde) only this night the place was not busy. Walked across to Bistro 45 and called. The nice female on the other end said the wait now is 30min Max? I'm confused. The "tall blonde" is rude! Snotty attitude. Also lies on waiting times. Had friends that night also experienced the similar attitude with the same person. I hear the place is great. Food tastes great and lots of great options. Has a small seating area outside. When busy the inside does get really loud. Service was slow and server was not very attentive. Server made it right by compensating us by taking a roll off the bill but still sending it home to go. read more

Dinner for 6 last night included Kirin Ichaban (nicely chilled) squid salads, spicey poki with avo and mango, Brundage Blast roll, Smokejumper roll and Wonder roll. Green tea ice cream for desert. The only reason I wouldn't give a full 5 star was that IF you make the mistake of ordering "3 stars" on their 1-5 scale, 2 out of 6 couldn't finish their dinner! We are all seasoned in spicey foods, and normally 3 stars is just right. Their scale needs calibration! Availability to reserve a table (even at a cost to guarantee) would be cool.
