Octopus, hell no. safe bet was breakfast sandwich on a croissant. it was messy and required knife & fork. i would've kept it original and perhaps made your own English. Crossants are too delicate for this. Nothing on the plate except the egg sandwich. I was getting sick to my stomach with the flavor and asked for some sort of fruit to cleanse my palette. Server said it was on the kids menu ( Why only the kids?). Beautiful fruit, and better than the entree. We've been there several times and all have been subpar. We went to Burdick's for lunch today and had a wonderful experience! The restaurant has been freshened up, really cool new long wooden tables for group dining. Duane ordered a pea and asparagus orecchiette pasta. I had a duck ragu with papardelle. Both were excellent!! Presentation was beautiful, service exceptional. We made it back for a dinner and we were not disappointed. The food here is really divine. I had a splendid piece of salmon with some exquisite horseradish garnish. A tasty and fresh blue cheese salad with beets and walnuts. My co diners had the burger and the steak dishes. Everything was perfect, fresh and tasty. We then all saved room for some wonderful desserts. I would definitely recommend this spot. Reservations seem to be necessary though we made ours the same day. The inside is so charming - being there at Christmas it was extra lovely with some beautiful accents for Christmas. read more

Stop reading this review and call and make a reservation. This place requires reservation to eat there! Tables fill up quickly even on a regular Sunday afternoon. The restaurant closes at 2pm on Sundays. I can't describe the amazing flavors and textures you get from the dishes here. You have to come here and try it for yourself. We ordered off the brunch menu and everything was spot on. Chicken in the Steamed Bao was so tender! This one was off the dim sum menu. The eggs Benedict on bread was perfectly cooked. Salmon and avocado salad very fresh and tasty. The oysters on the half shell with the vinegar sauce, so fresh. Personally loved the lentil soup or soup of the day. If I am ever in Vermont, I for sure will make a point to eat here again. read more

I returned to Burdick's to attend the October fest celebration. Food was better than the regular menu but still left me wanting better. We started with Potato Pancakes which were crispy on the edges but greasy in the middle..sisters shared sauerbraten and Chicken Livers which they enjoyed.. I had the wurst plate which was eff. Chef's problem was the dishes was served in a large bowls with all side items buried around and under which made it one big mash of food. Burdick's is still a fine restaurant with delicious food, friendly servers and a style that at once, somehow, successfully combines a casual atmosphere with the feel of fine dining. Pretty nifty, huh? To be truthful, though, we dined there last week outdoors under their nice tent, so everything was definitely on the casual side. And so was our order -- cauliflower soup, a salad and a chicken sandwich. We loved all the dishes but the sop was especially piquant and so pleasingly flavored. Our waitress was a gem, and we enjoyed some conversation with our neighboring diners. Burdick's is on the pricey side, even for lunch. And bear in mind that you need a reservation for every meal. Solid Restaurant in an unexpected location. We have family that live nearby so whenever we come to visit we usually end up having lunch at the restaurant at burdick and it never disappoints. We are there before thanksgiving and the sea bass special on a pepper sauce was excellent. The gnocchi with sausage was another winner as was the potato crusted salmon and the onion soup starter was a big hit with everyone. Great place to have a nice meal in a semi casual environment that knows how to prepare a solid entree. Well done Ken B well done.... read more

If you are a person of color or care about any, avoid this unbelievably racist establishment. Manager (blonde hair) did absolutely everything from sudden stock checks to picking lint off her face to avoid acknowledging people of color. (And never did!) Bartender was the same. I will say it was clear that not all employees were onboard with the racism but I wish I could rewind time and not give this place a single cent. read more

The food at Burdick's, as well as the staff, is always very good. However, let it be known that they have recently simplified the menu. The food is still great, just less to choose from. My only complaint, and I have heard this from a number of other people, is that Burdick's has got to offer more than one vegetarian entree. Yes, they have salads, and they can be made completely vegetarian, but we all know that's not the same thing. I hope management wakes up and realizes they are losing business because one or more in a party are vegetarian and they have tired of having but one vegetarian option over the past 10 or 15 years. C'mon, it's not hard. And for the record, I am an omnivore but feel compelled to pass along the feedback of those I know and dine with who are vegetarian and no longer wish to go to Burdick's. read more

Overall, a great restaurant where it would be least expected, a small town. It is a destination for unpretentious find dining. We drove an hour. Our fourth time, however, we were disappointed with our entrees. My mother's fish and chips was over-fried and rubbery. My tuna steak sandwich on challah was poorly done, soggy bread and sloppy. My wife's salmon salad was uninspiring. The strawberry-rhubarb ice scream just OK......the texture was wrong and it tasted like bland rhubarb and barely strawberry. Restaurants have life cycles and are only as good as the staff they retain. We have had awesome meals here in the past. For the price of a meal at this expensive restaurant, I do think they need to up their game again. read more

I ordered a chicken salad. It came with a giant bowl which was filled mostly with potato chips. There were three leaves of lettuce and one chicken buried deep... deep under the mountain of nasty fried chips. All of that for only $29! Not to mention this place could use some dusting, the chandelier was blowing STRINGS of dust in the wind over our food and I watched a piece drift off and land next to my food. Could've been into my food if I wasn't paying attention. Also, there was zero music so I could hear every conversation around me, which was awkward if I wanted to laugh or tell a story I didn't want a stranger to hear. There were also three separate kinds of lights blasting rays through my retinas. They have wall lights, chandeliers, and fairy lights, none of which make sense together, none of them match each other, AND THEY DONT ALL NEED TO BE ON AT THE SAME TIME... DIM THE LIGHTS. Also, one of the waitresses was wearing Jesus sandals with no socks which are definitely not safe for a kitchen. For those who don't know, you will definitely slip unless you get special non slip kitchen shoes which are an OSHA requirement! You could also drop hot oil or water on your open toes. read more

A little culinary gem located in the picturesque New Hampshire town of Walpole, next to Burdicks Chocolates. The food was very good and service friendly and professional. We had the bone morrow and poached pear with goat cheese as an appetizer. Both were fantastic. For lunch we had roast chicken, Branzino, and hanger steak. They don't have any truly adventurous menu offerings, but what they do make they execute masterfully. For dessert we hopped next door for some take out cakes that were phenomenal. Well worth a visit and if you are in the area don't miss stopping here. read more

Beautiful little restaurant in a charming New Hampshire town. The food was mixed. We started with a tomato and black bean soup, which was really tasty. My friend had the vegetarian special, which was a sautéed mix of seasonal veggies. A little plain, but she said it was good. My aunt had the fried catfish and chips. Frankly, the batter was flavorless. Not sure if it was missing salt, or what, it it just wasn't good. The fries, however, were outstanding! Thin and perfectly crispy. I had the quiche Lorraine with a small green salad on the side. It was good, but be warned, very, very rich. The service was overall good, except that if the waitress had checked in on us after the meals were delivered, we could have asked for salt and pepper, and then the fish might have been better. But she didn't. But it was good enough that I'd definitely go back. read more

Nice environment with some positives--perhaps your money may vary--but that monetary price is very high, and there were far too many misses--all served at the painfully glacial pace of Ken Burns documentary--for most of our party of 8 not to ultimately leave disappointed. The appetizers were a mixed bag. Some shared a nice assortment of oysters. French onion soup was also quite good. On the down side, the butternut squash soup special was bland, and the roasted olive appetizer, while a clever idea, was way too one note, and needed a contrasting flavor or two. A friend and I both ordered the swordfish, which was incredibly dry, tasteless and overcooked. It was served on top of a bland, mushy lentil mixture, although topped with a nice slab of bacon. Another friend's pork special was unbelievably tiny and also overcooked. Not a lot of vegetarian options - both had to get omelette/quiche for dinner. Some highlights included the roasted chicken entree with delicious potatoes, as well as the lamb shank. They also feature very good wine options, and the draft beers, while only two on tap, were both excellent options, including a delightfully rare and surprising Founders KBS, which made for a perfect dessert for me! Non-alcoholic desserts were popular as well, as one would expect from an establishment with a chocolate shop attached. Still, the food left me unimpressed, the service impatient and the price for it all made me blanch. My family and I were very excited to try Burdick's given the multiple recommendations I received. However, we were super disappointed with the service and vibe. I am never one to write a review, but our experience was so horrendous! We made reservations about 4 days before. When we arrived, we were not greeted at the front and then instructed to wait about 10 minutes so they could set up the table. Keep in mind the restaurant was not super busy, so there was no reason for this not to be prepared ahead of time. We were also the only colored family in the restaurant and felt like we were treated as such. We were told to ask about specials by the host, only to find out everything was sold out, this information could have been conveyed to the host. Our waitress came to our table only once for our initial order and every other time she came to the table was due to us calling her over. Meanwhile, it seemed like other tables had no issues in getting service. No steak knives were provided, even though two people ordered steaks. No refills for water unless we asked. About 20 minutes wait to get our beers, which we ordered immediately. No mussel bowl was given to place shells in, even though we asked the person setting down plates, which ended up being very messy. If the food was out of this world fantastic, MAYBE some of these could have been ignored, but the food was ehh alright at best. read more

This place. Where to begin? Perhaps best to preface with -- I'm a lifelong foodie from Manhattan, NY who enjoys a good hole in the wall diner or tiny family owned ethnic restaurant, fine dinning where they magically appear and pull your chair out for you and fold your napkin when you get up to use the restroom, and the smaller gem of a neighborhood place with an exceptional chef that feels like home and draws people from all over the city. The Restaurant at Burdick's is none of these. Rather, it is an overly high priced ($21 for an exceedingly ungenerous and mediocre Caesar salad) place that has you pack up your own leftovers at the table. But that is in keeping with a general cold vibe and we're doing you a favor attitude conveyed by our server, who seemed to also be their hostess. It shouldn't take you nearly 10 minutes to return and tell me that the wine I ordered isn't available. Especially at 5:15 pm when you're not yet full. Then when I look uncertain about the alternative option and you say, I can let you taste -- well that word "let" says it all. You bring me a taste, then take it away to fill up the glass -- what? No, you should leave it for me to sip while you either bring me a full glass, or walk over with the bottle and fill the glass. Let's see, there are bread plates on the table with butter knives in tow, but no bread offered. Is the table setting just for show? Then, after 20 min when we ask for bread, she responds with, I can get you bread. If you're that inept (other tables had bread) best not to pair it with attitude. Just sayin'. To my non-meat eating request that the brussel sprouts be prepared without lardons, she returns from the kitchen with, we'll do that for you. Where's the sense that you're happy to accommodate me? When your entrees are $29-$39, there is a standard of service that's expected. That standard includes a sense that you're happy to accommodate me. The 3 tiny pieces of chocolate that come with the check are paired with, the chocolates are on the house. Literally, she said that! Wait, what?! What restaurant of such a pretense to be high end makes a point of telling you you're getting something for free? I guess that sums up the feel of the place, pretense. The message was repeatedly one of, we are doing you a favor. Not gracious. Not warm. If the front of the house makes the experience unpleasant, it matters little what you do in the kitchen. On to the kitchen. We already covered the salad. The rest of the food was tasty, but nothing was special. Really not as good as they seem to be aiming for. The mussels were good, but the balance of wine to butter was really off, could barely taste a trace of the wine. Why with toasted bread and not frites? If you offer bistro fare, go classic. The chicken my daughter was served was also tasty, but inedibly dry in spots (my husband and she agreed on this). The accompanying potatoes were good. My husband ordered the cod. It too was good. But the accompanying broccolini was seriously undercooked. Oh, and on the menu it says that the accompanying green is broccoli rabe. Where did that error originate - a chef who doesn't know the difference (doubtful), or management that assumes that the patrons won't know the difference (arrogant of them) and therefore the server need not alert us to the substitution? In sum, if this place could get it together with what's happening in the front of the house, the food (though not special and high priced) would be worth a visit. But -- save for the friendly, warm blonde woman with a nice sense of play who actually brought our food out to us -- the overall experience was unpleasant. read more

We hadn't visited Burdick's for quite a long time but we're invited to dine with friends bearing a gift certificate. As with most restaurants the prices had gone up dramatically but we were hopeful that everything would be delicious and cooked to perfection. One of us ordered the half a chicken that appeared on a large bed of mashed potatoes with a few leeks tucked underneath at all. The whole thing was just kind of beige and brown. Would have been nice to see something of a vegetable accompanying all this beige. Sadly, the chicken dry and overcooked, ditto for the dinner salad with chicken breast. The only decently cooked entree to arrive at the table were the lamb chops , hence the two stars . Overcooked and overpriced we won't be back. read more

Excellent! We decided to take a "Sunday Drive" to Walpole & have brunch at the restaurant. We hadn't been here since pre-Covid & it did not disappoint! We made a reservation & we're very happy to see that tables were spaced more than they had been prior to the pandemic. All of our food was delicious- I went with the burger, VT cheddar cheese & fries tossed in Parmesan & truffle oil! Yum! My partner went for the Lentil Soup, Corned Beef Hash & poached eggs. Everything was delicious! The hostess & our waitress, Brandy were wonderful as was our bartender. It's a drive for us (a little over an hour) from Weare but so worth it! I was recently working with a prominent photographer here to take photos of my home in Putney, VT. This person happens to be non-caucasian. I thought I'd like to take him for a lovely meal so decided on Burdick's. When we arrived he went inside first while I parked the car to ask to be seated as the signs at the restaurant requested. He was turned away IMMEDIATELY before I entered. All the tables were reportedly 'booked through reservations' and there were no more reservations available.... not ONE table to be had despite the fact that there were at least 8-10 empty tables at the time. We were eventually told we could sit at the bar when I questioned all the empty tables... (with our backs to the restaurant). After eating our meal we noted that all the tables that were empty when we arrived were still empty, as well as most of the tables outside where we requested to sit initially..... This blatant racism was shocking and very hurtful in all the ways imaginable. I was mortified that an out of town guest was treated this way. I still can't get past it. I called the manager who's name was Kevin after we left. He insisted that no such thing had occurred, "we don't discriminate". I did not call it out further at the moment because I was terrified for my friend's safety if the police should be called to report a 'disturbance'. We've all seen those videos. We went next store to the chocolate shoppe for about 30 minutes before leaving the premises. Check the photos below and make your own conclusion. We not only returned, but we took a (modest) nearby motel so we could do so. Glorious. Their duck-liver mousse was divine and a huge scoop of it for a rich starter. Joe went on to the venison sausage, like just about everything, house-made and wonderful. I was sort of breaded out from the mousse so I had the lamb burger, sans bun. It was cooked more than I would have requested, but it made a sort of sense and was marvelous, a sort of de-constructed affair with a super-tasty olive tapenade. Finally, as is my wont, I let them choose my booze. It was the same, marvelous dry rose for both courses. Counter-intuitive (rose with lamb?) but on this warm day, it was just right. We just kind of stumbled across this gem while looking for somewhere decent to eat during a long drive and, for me, it really knocked it out of the park. Among other things, my kid has food allergies and they were super-accommodating and made it feel like no big deal. On top of that, she's got too much of a refined taste and, even with her restrictions, they hit all the right notes. As for me, I ordered the mackerel and it was absolutely delicious; the crisp on the skin was perfect and the seasoning was robust but not over the top. The chick pea and veggie accompaniment was also fantastic, with just the right balance of acid to make it bright and pleasant without taking anything away from the fish and. My partner's sole was also fantastic, but so much so that I didn't get to taste too much of it. The front of the house, again, was friendly and accommodating and didn't even mention how under-dressed we were for such a simple but elegant space (if I lived closer, this would definitely be on my list for a gorgeous date night spot). We had trouble using the online reservation sysstem but when we arrived the maître d' was very accommodating and seated us with no problems for a wonderful Valentine's Day lunch. I started with the Finnan Hadde, a delightful fish chowder exquisitely prepared. This was followed Mussels & Spaghetti, very generous with the mussels, the pasta al dente, the cream sauce perfectly seasoned (I wanted to slurp it out off the bowl but there were too many people in the dining room ). I think it is the best European fine cuisine in NH. We passed on the dessert menu to checkout their dessert shop next door, we were not disappointed. The Salmon sauté ($25) with reverb compote was however, too burnt and bitter so I couldn't enjoy the dish, even the reverb comport gave a nice sweet&sourness to the salmon. read more

I used to love this place! Recently I heard they had a new chef so I went with my S.O to check it out. The service was okay, but the food was downright awful!! The chef doesn't know how to do basic cooking! And as baker, I was disgusted by the desserts! I had a citrus cheesecake that was lumpy and sticky. The crust was so thick and rock hard! Not to mention the overly sour lemon curd and citrus with no sweetness to be found. This used to be a great restaurant by all standards: food, service, and ambiance. It was well worth the prices they charge. Sadly the food is the only thing left that is any good. On a recent visit the waitstaff was downright incompetent. The restaurant was about 1/3 full. We waited 25 minutes before our waitress appeared to take our drink order and then gave us attitude when we told her how long we waited. We ordered everything. 15 minutes later the appetizers show up. Still no drinks or bread. Drinks take another 5 minutes. Bread and entrees 10 minutes after that. I ordered what I thought was cold beet soup, but was served split pea soup...in July? My roasted chicken entree was amazing as usual. The manager was very apologetic and offered us dessert, but we just couldn't wait to get out of there. read more
