    Jargersnitzel

We truly stumbled across this place. We walked I on the later side after driving 9 hours. The ambiance was wonderful; truly a step back in time as a tavern. Our waitress was wonderfully attentive and made some awesome suggestions. I originally ordered the prime rib special but no worries my backup plan was the jaegersnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. We started with a very fresh cold salad. Get the creamy Italian Parmesan homemade dressing. I never finish a salad but I could have lapped up the rest of the dressing! They serve fresh baked bread and today's spread was a red pepper feta. My husband had the smoked pork chops. They were huge! Took a to go box for both entrees.

One of my favorite hobbies as a food guy is to put together little themed adventures. Whether it be finding the best burger or fried chicken or maybe even hitting craft beer trails, I like to have a theme. One of the best parts of being in the East Coast so much has been really delving into the history of the U.S., especially now that we are trying to delete it and change it into something it isn't. So my quest over the next few months will be to hit the oldest bars/taverns in America. The first stop on this adventure is the Tavern in Abingdon, VA. Built in 1779 (wow!) this was built as a stagecoach stop for travelers headed into the Blue Ridge Highlands, which is worth the trip itself just FYI. Walking up to the building it really looked like just I hoped it would. Years of reading history books and seeing paintings and drawings, I was hoping it would not have been upgraded too much, and it just looked like I imagined. What I was surprised was how amazing the experience was. Also how modern the menu, both drink and food is. Don't ask me why I expected flaggons of ales and bread bowls, makes zero sense. Instead it was a well curated cocktail list with a stunning modern menu. The one thing I knew I had to get was the French Onion soup, I think they called it the Tavern Soup, and it was worth the hype. The cheese was ooey-gooey wonderful and the onions and broth mixed nicely, sweet and salty, and was quite filling on its own. The menu is absolutely loaded with elegant choices: trout, scallops, chicken and risotto, baked salmon. I went full decadence and ordered the lamb chops because I saw it being served at the table close by. I am so glad I did. The meat was cooked absolutely perfectly and soaked in au jus, you couldn't ask for more tender bites. The mashed potatoes was a classic pairing and I ordered a side of asparagus along with it. Along with the beautiful service, the restaurant itself is lovely. I give this the highest of my highest recommendation.

This is our favorite spot in Abingdon when in town for work. We usually sit inside but weather was perfect so we sat outside this time. I love the Lemon Spritzer and my sister loves the Hugo Spritz. We got the bread with compounded butter - so good! We then shared the chicken risotto. Service is always friendly attentive and fast and the location is perfect. We will be back everytime we are in the area because it's so good!

This is such a beautiful spot; you feel like you're stepping back into 1779 as they've kept the building in great condition. We stopped in and had an appetizer and drinks. They have a good GF selection and the patio is a great place to sit. Service was fantastic. Im glad we stopped in on a whim. Would love to visit again!

Great comfort meal and cool historic atmosphere in the heart of Abington. Passed through on a business trip and spoke with several others at the bar saying this is always a must visit meal during their time in the town. Excellent service and a killer prime rib.

This was a must-not-miss on my list and I'm so glad I didn't! Set in a historical building, you can't help but feel romanced by the low ceilings and swept into another century. Reservations are highly recommended. I had the Jagerschnitzel, which was heavenly with buttered spaetzel and glorious red cabbage. It came with a sizable, hearty salad, with house made dressings, and fresh, warm bread. For dessert I had the peanut butter pie and OMG you cannot miss it!

Always a special occasion at this place…read more Group of 4 reservation on Friday at 7 pm. Table with view of river had spectacular view. Excellence is standard here from bar drinks and beers to service and especially the food. Shrimp cocktail coconut shrimp and fried green tomatoes for appetizers, although the ultra fine corn meal hush puppies are highly recommended too. Blackened redfish with special salsa was tender tasty and an unusually rich tasting treat. Mahi Mahi and Chilean sea bass were others chosen and one solo filet mignon. Conversation Slowed to a crawl with few oohs ahhs and you've got to try this statements all thru dinner. Desert was warm carrot cake and chocolate brownie Sunday. Decadent sweet and deliriously great with superb back coffee. Wait staff never left a glass unfilled and was great with recommendations for an unforgettable meal. Next time I'll come earlier to take advantage of the seafood market ( closed at 5 pm) for take home delicacies flown in fresh from everywhere greatest seafood exists. Can't wait til next excuse to go to Kingsport. We didn't scrimp on anything/ the bill was a tad over $ 200 with appetizers desert and entrees. But there were great looking selections on the lesser cost on the menu too. I was looking for a first class dinner experience and was perfectly satisfied. Stuffed and needing a nap after though lol

We walked in for dinner about an hour before closing, so they weren't all that busy. We were shown…read moreto a table along the windows, with an excellent view of the river just outside. It really was quite impressive. Our waitress was friendly but not very present, she'd disappear for large amounts of time and forgot refills a couple of times, but it didn't detract from the meal. I went with the Mahi Mahi entree ($20.99), blackened. I got the loaded potato for my side (+$1) and a side salad. My husband ordered the Stuffed Tilapia ($20.99) and we got the Fried Crab Bites ($14.99) to start. The crab bites and the side salads came out together. The salad was simple but good, kind of reminded me of a school cafeteria side salad in it simplicity. The crab bites were interesting - crispy on the outside, but still a bit...soupy?...on the inside. They were served with a remoulade dipping sauce that added a bit of zest. The main dishes came out pretty quickly, once the appetizer and salad plates were cleared. The mahi piece was smaller than I had expected, which was okay in the sense that I wasn't starving, but surprising in the sense that we were paying $21 for it. Still, it was blackened and flaky, and flavorful. The baked potato was also quite tasty, though I feel like it's hard to mess up a baked potato. My husband's plate was a cheesy, gooey slab of fish, served with two slices of crusty bread. He enjoyed the flavors of the tilapia and appreciated that they didn't skimp on the crab or shrimp meats. We had intended to end the meal with dessert - their specials menu was so intriguing - but by the time we finished our meals, we were stuffed, and it was almost 9 pm, their closing time. We didn't want to be those people making the kitchen stay late, so we packed it in and headed home. One note on the exterior: there were swarms of what we referred to as "midges" - not sure if that's what they truly were, but swarms of tiny bugs that hit you in the face as you were walking and followed you into your car as you were leaving. It was impossible to avoid them. Could have just been the time of year, or day, or maybe it's always like that. Just something to consider.
