My therapist, Cathy, was excellent and hit all my trouble spots. At 38 weeks I definitely needed a massage. Checking out was easy as well. He's very knowledgeable and can give you a true deep tissue massage with his steel fingers. Many people think they can "dig deep" but a few truly can. I just had a terrible experience here. I am 3 weeks post-partum w a c-section and I made an appt for a post-natal massage to try and relax and address swelling. I arrived and waited 15 min past my appt time and the receptionist was nowhere to be found. Eventually someone came out and said there had been a "mixup" w scheduling and she could give me a regular massage but she was not trained in pre or post-partum therapy. I didn't have such a hot experience. First I call to make an appointment and was able to get one for the next day which was a Sunday. That honestly threw me off a little because all of the other reviews made this place sound so great that I expected them to be booked up for awhile. I showed up the next day and as soon as I walked in I was again thrown by how shabby everything is inside, including an old sofa with a sheet thrown over it to cover it up in the waiting area. Not nice. I checked in with the receptionist who just stared at me blankly and talked very slowly and in a very confused way, which I think is her norm because she sounded exactly like the person I made my appointment with. Or as the receptionist would say, "uhhhh - what appointment?" Yeah. They lost it. And blamed it on a computer issue but then she's sitting there with a paper appointment book in front of her that contained appointments for that week and the week before. I reminded her that I had just made it the day before and she just stared at me and goes, "....well - it's gone." So I left. A few hours later someone else called who seemed a little more with it and apologized and asked me to call back to schedule a massage at a discounted rate. I decide to give it another shot because the reviews were just so good and asked for another weekend appointment. There were so many available on both Saturday and Sunday. I guess worrying about this place being really popular and booked isn't an issue. At least it makes it convenient. When I went in for the massage the rate was only discounted 9 dollars. Seriously?? 9?? The number seemed so random until I figured out it was 10% off. I had asked for a deep tissue massage but I just ended up with a standard weak rubdown. Every now and then she would just totally stop and then I realized that's when she was probably infusing me with positive energy or some such thing. I'd rather she did it while still massaging me. I asked for the whole hour to be focused on my neck and back and still walked out feeling only mildly looser. In fact my lower back felt a little worse. It was pretty worthless overall. The therapist seemed nice though. I just feel like I wasted money and time on this place. My clear cut choice for quality massage in the area. After some injuries, I started coming here as a client in 2005 and have seen a variety of people. This center has some of the most skilled therapists in the area all under one roof, with the technical knowledge of the body I needed, not just rubbing and sending you on your way. This is not a spa atmosphere, although you can still come here and receive a great relaxing massage. If you prefer teas, robes, showers, there are better places to visit. Specialty here is pain management and relief, which I had great personal success with. All types of massage are offered but you've got to find a person that works for you, as with any massage place, but they offer such variety, you'd be hard pressed not to. Convenient location by metro and weeknight/weekend hours were a big plus for me, prices are on par with other places in the area, but I'd contest the quality is much higher here the same $$ elsewhere... read more

My entire experience with the Teal Center was fantastic from speaking to the front desk to make the appointment to the amazing attentive masseur who did not skimp at all. I called on a Tuesday and requested a lymphatic drainage massage with whoever was their resident specialist and with admittedly little idea of what it would actually entail - just fixating on the word detox. It happened that the next available appointment was for the following day (and then basically booked until January) so I jumped on it. The receptionist (Cathy? Carrie? She has a very calming voice and it starts with a C....) talked me through the whole process and made me aware of their billing policies (credit card to hold the appointment and no cancellation for my particular appointment bc it was less than 24 hrs away), gave me directions and parking instructions and links to forms to fill out in advance, and then assaged my concerns in my subsequent follow up call 10 mins later panicking that I had picked the wrong treatment/massage/masseur/etc. She talked me through the differences between lymphatic drainage and tui na (the other option I was considering) and filed a note for my masseur (Sylvia) that I may prefer a firmer pressure (lymphatic massage is generally very light). The actual massage: AMAZING. First Sylvia talked to me about why I was there and what I wanted out of the session (insomnia, detoxification, generally stress and tense muscles) and then outlined what she would be doing (massage + lymphatic drainage with a focus on my face, arms, shoulders, back). She was attentive and supportive and gave me a full 60-min massage/treatment! I was half expecting to be rushed towards the end but never did I feel harried or pressured. In fact, after the massage, she sat down and talked with me some more about how I was feeling and deep breathing exercises to help with the insomnia/stress. The facilities were very clean and warm, the music was soothing, the lights were off and blinds on, and the room smelled good. There was some outside noise from the construction and one time a siren but honestly it didn't disrupt the ~zen~. The waiting room (I didn't have to wait as she was ready and greeting me when I came in about 5 mins before my appointment time) was nice and tranquil. I don't get the comparison to a physical therapists office which I've always found more doctorly and sterile. Definitely not a spa facility mind you but still very inviting. The massage was great! Deep but not painful, relaxing and soothing and well paced. She got out the knots and used the perfect amount of pressure. The lymphatic drainage part was obviously different from the massage part and mostly entailed very light soothing motions over the 'lymphnodes' points or something like that. I'd sarcastically call it granola-nutty healer mumbo jumbo except it TOTALLY WORKS. I have no clue how or why but I definitely felt my body unwind and zen out. Bottom line: Sylvia's the lady with the magic angel hands and attentive no skimps no frills. read more

I've had several very good massages at the Teal Center. (As a massage therapist myself, I'm a very discerning client!) However, this afternoon I had an appointment scheduled with Angela. I waited thirty minutes after my appointment was to start, but I finally had to reschedule (with a different therapist on a different day). No one was able to get in touch with Angela, nor had she called to say she was running behind. Nothing. I have never, nor would I ever, leave a client waiting without explanation. While apologetic, the administrative staff didn't offer a discounted session or try to get me in with another therapist at the time. It's not the way I would have handled the situation. I'm going back because I've been impressed by the quality of the therapy I've received there. I'm hoping this was just a fluke. read more

If you want a waffle-robe padded, girly girl getaway, this isn't the spot, but if you wants an incredible massage in an incredibly peaceful spot, go to The Teal Center in Arlington. It's just blocks from the Metro and there's parking in the building. Don't be fooled by the non-descript hulking apt. building that houses it. And don't be fooled by the name, teal has nothing to do with the malibu-barbie shade of color, it's the owner's last name. Brenda Teal has been a zealous leader in training and staffing her massage center with professionals who take a holistic approach.If you want an all-over relaxation, there's someone there for you. If you're suffering from sinus headaches, there's someone there. If your abductors feel as if they're made of concrete rebar, there's more than a few folks here to smooth it out. Many are athletes and can speak specifically to sports injuries. I've been going there for eight years and just walking into the place immediately relaxes me and it's just the smell and quiet. Leo, Heather, Tammy, Brenda and Louis are my favorites, but you can't go wrong. Although there's no showers or free lotions and potions, you won't pay for it. An hour massage goes for $85. read more

I saw her for a deep tissue session but she used a combination of deep tissue and therapeutic techniques for my shoulder/neck issue. I have worked with several therapists over the years at the Teal Center. They are all well trained and know the body. They listen to your concerns and focus on them beautifully. I am currently working Joe with some persistent mid back pain. For this pain, I have had MRI, CAT, injections, physical therapy, chiropractor, acupuncture and massage at other places. Joe's massage techniques are producing wonderful results and I actually believe he will eventually succeed in getting it to melt away. The price is terrific when you discover the results. I went to the Teal Center seeking relief from lower back and hip pain that had been plaguing me for over a decade. I had recently completed a long run and severely aggravated the condition. I made an appointment with Adam and asked him to provide deep tissue/trigger point treatment in the lower back and hip. After two visits with Adam, the pain was gone! The Teal Center is just around the corner from me and I've been meaning to try it out for a while now. Today was a great day to do just that. I felt a massive migrane coming on and painful stiffness making its way from my left shoulder to my head. I scheduled a same-day massage appointment and was placed under the most wonderful care of Nishanka Lahr. She is one of the Center's senior therapists and absolutely wonderful at what she does. She loosened up my whole back area and incorporated craniosacral therapy, which was the first for me and an amazingly deep experience on a physical and an emotional level. Wow! Loved Nishanka. I went in for a "relaxation" massage after feeling super achy from a long run. What I loved was that she seemed to have a thorough understanding of my muscle placement so she knew how to pull and rub it all in the right way. It's not a posh space, but I'm not there for a posh space. I'm there for a GOOD MASSAGE. She mixed in a little acupressure. I felt great! When we finished, Nishanka was also kind enough to point out some alignment issues that she noticed (for example, a shoulder that seemed to be pulling forward and a calf that was rather tight). She then recommended some stretches to help with my realignment. I will definitely be back. read more

4.5 out of 5. I called for an appointment at Randolph Towers this morning and was offered two same-day options. The Randolph Towers location (4001 9th St N in Arlington) has street parking available, but it goes quickly, so I highly recommend the taking the metro (short walk from Ballston metro stop). My massage (deep tissue) was good, although there was too much Swedish, muscle-softening prep and not enough digging in with the forearm and elbow. I could feel that my right side was worked on slight less than my left. Overall, it was a good massage for the price and I would come back here, but I still find the best massage in the DMV is in Centreville (Spa World). Alas, if you live in Arlington, you can save the $35 Spa World charges to get in the door and the 25 minute drive and get a very good massage at The Teal Center. read more

I was very disappointed in my massage at the Teal Center. I had high hopes since it is a convienient location for me and it has such great reviews. The receptionists and the lobby space are very nice, and the overall place is nice. However, the massage was not good. It was clear the therapist hadn't even glanced at my paperwork at all. I've been getting massage every other week for 5 years, and this was one of my worst massages. She started super soft barely touching me for a long while, then when I said I needed deeper tissue, she started to use her bony elbows and knuckles which was pretty excruciating during and now after. I might try another therapist sometime but I am hesitant to do it. There are other places nearby to try. read more

I screwed up my back and knew I needed a massage to loosen things up and get me back on track. Of course I came to this conclusion on a Saturday morning. I called the Grooming Lounge to see if they had any appointments available, but they were booked all weekend with the exception of a half hour on Sunday. That wouldn't do. So I checked Yelp and discovered Teal. I made the call and was able to schedule an appointment for an hour and a half later. Overall the experience was excellent. The massage by Dianna was excellent, exactly what my sore back needed. She spent the right amount of time listening to me describe my back problem and how it developed. Not only did she provide a great massage, but she also offered tips on how to prevent further recurrences, even going so far as to demonstrate specific exercises that I could do to strengthen problem areas. read more

My massage was with Dianna McAdams, CMT and my experience was less than adequate. I have been getting regular weekly massages and have tried 20+ masseuses over the past few years, and she ranks at the bottom. She completely ignored my requests, despite providing her detail instructions on areas to work on and how much pressure to apply. I went to her based on her level of experience and her ability to customize the massage to the needs of the customer, yet her knowledge was minimal. I use massage to treat tension headaches and tendenitis, and even $1/minute mall chair massages have done much better job than Dianna. I specifically told her that I need a lot of work on my neck, apply pressure points and use a lot of pressure, yet she spent less than 10 minutes on my neck. Worse, she wasted at least 15 minutes in gently touching body points (some kind of energy balancing thing which I do not believe in and not requested at all). I left the massage in need of a massage. It's been 2 days and the tension of my neck has worsened. It was a waste of money and time. Oh, did I even say she was 15 minutes late? I also requested a little work on my thighs. She gently touched my thighs...I would not even consider that a massage. If she cannot work through the muscles and work off tension and trigger points, why does she say she specializes in "deep tissue" & "nueromuscular"? read more

I highly recommend Kate for acupunture. I've been seeing her regularly for a year, and it's been so helpful. Even ailments that I don't think are a big deal (i.e. dry mouth), she'll treat it so tell her everything. I also recommend Adam for massage. I like that The Teal Center's price is standard based on the time and does not vary based on the type of service. They charge $95 per hour whether it's acupunture or a massage. The Center's environment is a bit no frills, but I like that. Their services focus more on your body and health needs as opposed to frilly unnecessary ammenities. I decided to come to the Teal Center because I was injured a few years back and my back and neck had seized up again. I saw Adam and explained what my injuries were, what techniques formerly worked on my back and neck and asked if he could do something about it. After an hour, I felt like a new person. He managed to release alot of the tension in my shoulders and neck and I felt he listened to me and did exactly what I wanted. I came back two weeks later for a maintenance appointment. My back wasn't even close to being as bad as it had been, but again I felt so much better than before. I will continue to come to Adam. For those who want more of a traditional spa experience, Teal Center might not be your first choice. It is a little more clinical than a spa and doesn't offer other services like facials etc. But if you want a great massage or other bodywork from people trained in a variety of bodywork, I recommend Teal Center (and Adam) wholeheartedly. read more

I love the Teal Center! Whether you're in pain or just looking for some relaxation, this is the place to go. I've seen several of the therapists at both locations and have never had a disappointing session. The office went under a huge renovation earlier this year and the place looks wonderful. It's not too spa-like, but still has a relaxing natural wood/blue tone that makes the place feel comfortable. My regular therapist was Jenny who is awesome! I saw her about 1-2x a month and am sad that I no longer live in the area. You're usually able to get an appointment with Jenny since she works all day long, while most of the others don't seem to, so you don't have to worry whether you're getting a good therapist or not if you're booking last minute. If you don't have a flexible schedule - book ahead! She is very knowledgeable and knows all sorts of modalities so she can really customize the session to your needs. I've seen her for Thai, Reiki, Triggetpoint, Deep Tissue, Relaxation, etc. We got to a point where I trusted her enough to do whatever she felt I needed based on what I told her that day. Angela is also great for a deep, invigorating massage, and Yulia for relaxation! Highly recommend online booking, though if you don't know what you want, the receptionists are helpful and knowledgeable about each therapist and their modalities. read more

I went to Luis for about 2 years when I lived in DC. He is an outstanding therapist. When I received a massage from him it not only felt like he was doing his best to help me move past the pain & discomfort I had, it felt as though he honestly cared. For clients who have chronic pain or regularly receive massage, you know it is rare for the therapist to invest so much personally. The massage therapist (Patti) asked me what was going on, didn't let me finish my statement and then reprimanded me the rest of my session for my neck pain (even though if she had let me finish she would have known she was off base in her assessment).
