Owned by a community minded couple that used to deliver large orders to my place of work. What may have only initially sat ten (name?) now accommodates 16-20 people, including a high-top window counter section with views of novelty toys spanning decades. Well imagined lunch menu offerings for all palette preferences and dietary restrictions: poultry, grazing meat, fish, cheese, and veggie options. Thought my salmon smear was a salad but it tasted great as a sandwich; warm, toasted wheat bread hosting fresh smoked, tender fish with fresh veggies and creamy smooth herbed goat cheese: a well assembled lunch option with no regrets - take that FOMO! (After I ordered the salmon smear and sat down, I noticed the flatbread pizza special with arugula and peaches....mmm). Based on my co-workers reaction to her food, I'd say her pimento cheese sandwich was a welcoming warm food hug on a formidable Fall Monday. Who doesn't need a food hug? My very best friend was only in town visiting me for 24 hours. The Ten Top made it on the list of spots I just had to take her to while she was here. I've had several fantastic meals here, but the one I want to brag about is the veggie grilled cheese. I brought my friend here for "second lunch" so she could try it. The first time I bit in to this sandwich I actually said "oh wow!" I was expecting to enjoy it since I like all the different veggies and cheeses, but I didn't expect a "wow" moment. There are enough veggies so you can trick your mind into thinking you're eating something healthy, but enough cheese so you don't forget you're eating a grilled cheese sandwich. The bread has a perfect crunch that helps complete this awesome sandwich. I'm a fan of the potato salad as my side. I don't usually get jazzed about potato salad, but I inhale it from The Ten Top. First time at Ten Top despite working a ten minute walk away. We arrived just after opening on a Wednesday morning. The staff was very friendly: I was really torn between the crab cake and Greek lamb sandwiches, and highly recommended both but suggested the crab if looking for something a little lighter. (On my way out they also said the tuna melt is phenomenal. I unfortunately don't love Tuna, but if I was ever going to eat and enjoy it, this would be the place. The pictures look mouthwatering good!) I believe they said it would take maybe 10 or 15 minutes, but we were in and out in less than ten. One other customer came in during that time and was also in and out quickly. Back to the crab cake. Wow! This sandwich is massive and the side of potato salad could best be described as an actual mountain. The sandwich consists of a really well seasoned crab cake, fresh greens, perfectly ripened tomato slices, and a caper dill aioli that set the whole thing off perfectly with a delightful little tanginess. The bun was delicious, soft and a little sweet, but I ended up tossing it aside half way through just so I could finish the rest of the crab and other toppings. The potato salad deserves it's own paragraph here. Large chunks of potatoes that seem well flavored throughout, crunchy bits of celery and red onion, all resting amongst a creaminess rivaling the best mashed potatoes. The serving size is enormous and though I ate maybe a third with the intention of saving the rest for later, I find myself still picking at it because it is just so satisfying. I can't wait to come back to try the Greek Lamb Hoagie, and will probably have to work my way through the rest of the menu as well. This is a great little lunch spot in Ghent! read more

Do yourself a favor and save your appetite if you're headed to this small, unassuming establishment for lunch. I came here with a coworker and we both left with smiles and full bellies!! He ordered the Greek hoagie with cole slaw and I ordered rick's meatloaf sandwich with potato salad. The meatloaf looked like it was half a meatloaf. Each piece was nearly an inch thick. I really enjoyed the sandwich as well as the potato salad. They had some sodas in the cooler that I had never seen before so I opted to try some kind of root beer they taste better than IBC root beer. I can't remember the name but I think it was called Spiecher. I wish I had scanned the menu better before we ordered because they also had Cajun crab and catfish soup and some kind of black bean chili that smelled outstanding. Although I think if I would have ate a bowl I probably would have busted at the seams. The reviews are all true! This place is a perfect little lunch spot with a famous tuna melt sandwich that's worth all it's glory! I came in for the first time a bit overwhelmed with all the yummy sounding options but the friendly girl working behind the counter recommended I start with the tuna melt and she was so right! Incredibly generous in portioning and super filling. With a layer of melted cheese on top of a thick layer of tuna over a piece of bread holding it all up, I ended up eating half at the restaurant and took the other half home. Only downside for me was that it happened to be on the saltier side so beware if you're watching your sodium intake - I believe it was just all in the cheese though. I told myself I had to explore all the great places around Norfolk more before repeating spots but the cravings for another visit just keep getting stronger! read more

It's nice to support small local businesses but honestly, the food is better, the large chain restaurant food is gross, it's frozen, processed sometimes they are rigid in their menus. Ten Top food is great and they are super friendly. I'm a vegetarian so there's a few things on the menu I can try but the Baked Caprese is so damn good I haven't tried anything else. Small, few tables , kind of a hole in the wall BUT, And I repeat BUT, Service and food was out of this world. I had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes and I dont know what was in those potatoes but it had to be fairy dust because they were fantastic. The meatloaf was like a brick of pure heaven. Interesting and innovative. Selections like vegan French onion soup (I'm not vegan, yet I inhaled it with focused obsession), salmon and cauliflower chowder, Mediterranean beef. All amazing. So I called the restaurant back to double check and let them know what I found out and the young man was helping me and another man took the phone away from him who said he was the owner and he was the most rude person I have ever Spoken with over the phone. He wouldn't listen to me so I could explain that it seems that yelp is connected to GrubHub and he cut me off and was so very rude to me. I will never order from here again. I've been visiting Colley avenue for the past few years, so I can't believe this is the first time I have come across this gem! The Ten Top is so adorable! From the sea foam walls to the little trinkets on the front desk, I loved the homey vibe that it gives off. Also, it smelled SO good when we walked in. We later found out it was the soup du jour, tomato soup, which my friend ended up loving! I took a chance and ordered their French sandwich with ham, pear, and a few other simple ingredients, and it was honestly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in Norfolk. For a side, I chose the pasta salad, which was also pretty great. The selection of craft sodas were pretty solid! I got a ginger ale that I really enjoyed. My bestie and her hubby have been raving about this place for a long time, and for my visit up from NC I finally got to give it a try! After looking over the menu and with my bestie's recommendation I tried the turkey apple club with potato salad and let me just say O.M.G!! The turkey club was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, especially considering it was on cinnamon bread. Cinnamon bread?! My husband and I have been here several times and each time we have a wonderful experience. The people are kind and the good is great. The daily soups are such a wonderful addition to a cold, crisp, autumn day. There's not much seating but getting the food to go and enjoy on a picnic is definitely recommended. I'm late to the game on this one. Finally tried this awesome spot that's hidden in plain sight in Ghent. It's located on Shirley, just off Colley near the Naro. It is a fantastic little spot that specializes in fresh, cafefully crafted sandwiches and salads. I had a crabcake special. The crabcake itself was tasty and full of crabmeat' with little or no filler. It was rubbed in fresh chili powder which gave a nice flavor. Ripe tomatoes, fresh greens, and a house made aioli made it a near-perfect sandwich. It also came with what is probably the best potato salad I've ever eaten. The Ten Top has been buried in my many bookmarks in Yelp for far too long! I found The Ten Top on Yelp a few years back and saved it because I saw appetizing pictures of their sandwiches. For whatever reason, we were never able to make it there but I'm glad we finally made it. It's located in the bustling streets of Colley Ave. The interior is very limited and few seats and tables available but there's a huge space for the kitchen. No complaints whatsoever! The staff was friendly as well and was patient as we decided what to order. We ordered the Pastrami melt with chips and the Chicken and Apple Chutney Wrap with a tomato Parmesan soup. Our order had a little wait as there were orders before us but that was no problem at all. The Pastrami melt was a solid choice as there was generous helpings of pastrami and the sauce and toppings were perfect. The Chicken and Apple Chutney wrap was just okay though but not terrible. The tomato Parmesan soup was delicious with the Parmesan having a good balance with the tart tomato flavor. The consensus was the pastrami melt was a hit! Every now and then they roll out a new menu which always gets me excited. Although the restaurant itself is small, it has a great vibe & a pinball machine. As well as restrooms! The workers are always friendly & very helpful with decision making. A few have recently started remembering me by name and that makes a world of difference. I dine in the Ghent area pretty often but I decided to check out the Ten Top for the first time since it had great reviews. I managed to stop by after their lunch rush (which I heard can get pretty hectic) so it wasn't busy at all and I was able to find street parking close by. Lucky me! It's a small interior with probably five tables and a bar-like seating area by the window, so this place is ideal for dining with a friend, alone or taking it to go. Despite being small, it was a pretty neat set up- with art on the walls, a pin ball machine and cool action figures sitting on the apron of the window. While waiting in line for my order I was checking out the impressive selection of drinks. Teas, cream sodas, and Mexican Coca-Cola (which tastes better than regular coke..if you know, you know). Once at the register, I was greeted by a friendly gentleman and he brought my order out when it was ready which again, didn't take long because the place wasn't busy. I ordered the California Cobb salad with chicken (my "safe zone" choice being that it was my first time here). It was DELICIOUS and a generous serving size would be an understatement. I definitely had to take it home and save it for later. My favorite part of the salad was the homemade croutons. Super flavorful and huge; I wish I could buy it in a box from the store, and the ingredients were very fresh. They use rotini and it's cooked perfectly--nice al dente instead of overcooked pasta like most places. They also add zucchini and squash, which is a nice touch. 4* 7) Value, value, value! You know how sometimes on a first visit you are unsure where it lands on the ole 1-5 scale? Well I would say that is a fair assessment of how things went today. I did not love my sandwich, but really thought the small place was chill. Not to mention service was excellent. What made this all change was a woman named Elvira. She sat in the corner starring at me and I must say it was a turn on. So what began as an average lunch later turned into an exhilarating Friday trist. I met a friend around 11:30 AM to get a head of the crowd. That worked out pretty good until it came time to park. So let's get to the most challenging item to be concerned about. If your driving and attempting to park at peak times it may be a big hassle. It was not bad for me after some effort. Parking is either going to be on parallel on Colley, or curb on Shirely for the most part. That is unless you hit the lottery and score one of their two spaces directly in front of the building. The laundromat beside The Ten Top has signs up "for customers only" and unless you feel like getting towed I would not push it. Keep in mind if you do park on Shirley to kiss the curb and don't block a drive. It is very narrow and I imagine a mirror, or two, or there has been knocked off. Fliers are neatly taped to the inside of the window creating an awesome community board collage. The vibe was definitely hippie and no shock there. We aren't in Kansas anymore Dorthy, this is hip and trendy Ghent. As I opened the glass door and it was surprising how small the sandwich shop was. A few tables, counter directly in front and I loved the open air kitchen. Concrete floors and menu boards decorated the walls. The counter was full of tiny nick knack toys the kids are sure to mess with and I'm sure that's why they are there. I immediately felt comfortable with the 4-5 others enjoying lunch. I don't know about you, but it is always kinda awkward the first time your at a walk up, especially if you have not familiar with the line up at all. So when I saw their paper menu on the counter it was intimidating with lots of choices. I pulled the ole what would you recommend that is a tried and true method used for centuries. The Greek Lamb Hoagie was one of a few recommended by the hip young blondie woman. I did not hesitate and said go for it. Prices seem fair and it you want a drink it's all bottled up in the cooler to grab. My friend and I found a table by the window. Tables not occupied were cleared and clean. The floors clean and overall appearance was that they take care of the dining room which is always a great start for me. Sorry to disappoint those that want a view, but other than some people watching on Colley if you stretch out a bit there is none. I also checked out the restroom prior lunch delivery and found them tidy. This is when I spotted her in the corner looking so sexy. Unless you are a pinball enthusiast you may not be get as worked up as I. Elvira and The Party Monsters Pinball by Bally's is a 1989 machine. I have not laid eyes on her since college when we were a hot item at my pizza hangout. It took every bit of restraint in my body to not be out in out rude and leave my friend and play her. But I'm an adult and had restraint, not to mention lunch was being served. So let's talk food. The Greek Lamb Hoagie had spinach, mozzarella baked in a French Baguette and topped with cucumber dill dressing. It is one of their most popular sandwiches. However, I felt bread was so crispy it was difficult to even approach with dill dressing filling the bread type bowl up. The taste was okay, just too much dill for me, but the meat once I could get to it was really good. The side of potato salad was fantastic and I loved. My friend got the pulled a pulled pork sandwich and pasta salad and he said it was delicious. That is what I should have ordered, oh well next time. The young woman at the counter came over to our table and cleared plates. It is not a self bus, but was still very impressed with how attentive she was. The visit was a solid 3, recommend and i will be back. But wait a minute, what about Elvira and if our still reading my boring review notice I gave them a 4. After my friend left I said goodbye at the car and he went on his merry way. I got in my car too, even started it...then got out and went back to be with my lost love from college. The nice young woman at the counter provided quarters for the machine and I was ready to have Elvira make my dreams come true. After so many years of s. I tossed in 50 cents for 5 balls and channeled my inner pinball wizard and boy did I have a blast! I even popped her twice, but sadly could not achieve the high score after approximately 45 minutes. If you don't have the potato salad here, you are doing yourself a disservice. It's won awards. No, really. In Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Hampton Roads, they had a potato salad taste off and Ten Top won the award. And having gotten some of their potato salad, I can understand why. Nicely al dente with the right amounts of yumminess. I don't know how else to describe it other than OMG. For lunch, I was torn between the meatloaf and a pizza, finally settling on the pizza. Spinach, chicken and feta cheese combined nicely for a good flavor and a good texture. I would only say that the big bits of diced chicken were odd. Smaller pieces would be how I would have done it. But that's why I'm an IT consultant and they're a great restaurant, I guess. Parking is going to be your main challenge here. If you're lucky, find a spot on the street.
