Took my best friend from back home in CA to the Big Thurman today, to see how she thought it stacked up to her hometown San Diego's Hodad's and it was pure perfection for her, I already knew I'd come hungry and leave happy. Ambience is old school with the added in occasional contemporary flare (think Graffiti slaps, stickers, toy claw machine etc). Seating is less available than the Sunbury/Galena location but this should be expected and prepared for by guests of the GV flagship location. The service is reasonably timed, courteous and some might even say flirty lol! No matter or issue for me. I love a friendly service staff. I've been to Thurman's before and got a burger so today I decided to keep it light with some simple apps and a salad. For the appetizers, I ordered the jalapeno poppers and beer battered cheese curds. The poppers were a perfect ratio of jalapeno, cream cheese, and fried dough. I also loved that they were huge compared to other poppers I've had that use chopped jalapenos compared to whole like these ones pictures. The cheese curds were good but a little "hard" for my liking but still cheesy enough on the inside. For my meal I wanted something light so I ordered the Macedonian salad with gyro meat. I did like it a lot, except the olives made it a tad too salty, so I just around those and enjoyed my meal. Service was slow. My boyfriend and I sat down at the bar and it probably took 5-10 minutes for someone to ask if we wanted a drink. We were not in a rush so this was not a big deal. Just ridiculous! 3/4 lb burgers ! I had to try one and discovered all the Yelp reviews are spot on. The house fries were probably the best I've had in years. My friend had the salsa burger which was served open face and it was completely flooded with salsa. He loved it and ate the whole thing. After seeing The Thurman Cafe on a lot of "best burgers in Ohio" lists, we decided to try it out. It's a small bar/restaurant located in German village. Street parking only, but plenty of side streets and places to park. Upon walking in the lobby area was very crowded and we waited about 40 minutes to get seated. We were seated at the bar. Service was a team effort between the bartender and the servers. They were all very attentive but not overbearing. We started with the pretzel bites and honey mustard. They tasted like cut up pieces of soft pretzel that were fried. They were delicious! The perfect sweet and salty combination. I tried the bacon cheddar ranch burger. This was the biggest burger I've ever eaten! The patty is 3/4 pound and about an inch and a half thick. It was very flavorful and the toppings worked well together. My only complaint is that I ordered it medium and there wasn't any pink in it. The onion straws were a nice change of pace from the regular fries. Overall a very great experience and a good burger! Wouldn't recommend to someone if they're looking for a quick meal - it took time to get seated and then the burgers took at least a half hour to cook. Ok, so I've lived in Cleveland for 36yrs. I happened to be in Columbus, and remember the rumors of a burger place called Thurmans. So, I drove past, looked and was like "eh", but I'll give it a shot. I sat at the bar, and immediately given a menu. The previous reviews said I'd be waiting 30 min; yeah... not so. I ordered the Jaeger Burger, and when it was brought to my seating, I must have looked stupefied. The burger was huge, and the fries perfect temp. I dove I. And believed I had conquered a mighty burger. Just then, a Thurmanator floated past, and made me very humbled. The burger I ordered was moist, huge, and just perfected cooked (Medium Rare). The biggest dollop of French Onion Dip with the caramelized onions were the perfect combo. All this and the ambiance began to grow on me. The memorabilia, the college crowd, and the nice variety of liquor and great choice of beers; heavenly. All and all, you have to try this. No questions, no hesitation!! What can I say about this Columbus staple that hasn't already been said. The food is fantastic. I've been here many times over the years. When I have friends that come in from out of town, this is where they want to go. I had a good friend come in from California and this is where he wanted to go. He used to live walking distance of this place. It's more convenient to go to the Thurmans To Go location in Pataskala. This is the full experience though. Just like you've seen on TV. It was the first time I've never had to wait to get in. There was a spot open at the bar. All servers/staff wear masks and wipe down seating areas after guests leave. I got the Mushroom Burger. I don't remember what my friend got. The guy next to us attempted Thurminator. It's awe striking and I had to take a picture. My food was delicious. It's not the best burger in town (IMHO). It's high on the list though. Nice and juicy. I usually eat it upside down because the juices soak the thin bottom bread so much that it can no longer hold the burger. The wings here are good also. A bunch of friends and I came to Thurman Cafe to try their famously large burgers on a Saturday evening, all I can say is that I was severely disappointed by the whole experience. First, the wait. I guess for Saturday night, we should expect to wait for a table at a place that doesn't take reservations. My group didn't realize HOW long that wait would be, and it ended up being over 90 minutes before we got seated. I understand that this place is popular, but this wait time in conjunction with everything described below was just upsetting. Upon entering the main area of the restaurant, I can understand why people like coming here. There's a very lively vibe with dollar bills stuck everywhere and people having a great time. The lighting was too dim for my liking, however. I ordered the Jason burger while some of my friends ordered the Thurmanator. It was, as promised, massive. I was actually pretty excited to dig into the burger, but sadly I quickly learned that my burger was nowhere near the "medium" I ordered and was more of a medium-well to well-done. The patty is so really thick, but the meat on the inside was pretty dry and definitely no pink to be seen. The patty itself was also pretty flavorless and I was left eating dry, flavorless chunks of meat. The other toppings on burger were mediocre at best, with the fried egg being way overdone and greasy. The salami was the only thing on that burger I enjoyed, but it was a salty item in a burger already loaded with salt. I finished about half and couldn't get myself to eat any more of this tragic waste of meat. For the cost of the burger I certainly expected something of higher quality. The service speed throughout the night was so-so, with someone coming over to refill our waters once or twice. The water tasted a bit funky and gave me a stomachache. I stopped drinking it after a trip to the bathroom even though I wanted water with all the sodium I was consuming. Finally, what REALLY solidified this 1-star review is one of the servers asking our group of East Asian-looking faces "Where are you from?" I am quite upset that this question was asked specifically to our table since I highly doubt the servers would ask a table of white individuals where they are from. Almost everyone at my table grew up in the States and we responded with the American cities we were from respectively to be polite. The server, unable to comprehend that we are American, pressed the question as if he was expecting us to say "China" or "Japan" when none of us are actually from those countries. Come on, it's 2020. Just because we don't look white doesn't mean we can't be from Cincinnati. For that, I would've given a 0 star review but I guess 1 is the minimum. The menu has several burger options but also other categories of foods including chicken sandwiches and subs. They have a full liquor selection and a variety of bottled beers. Nothing fancy mind you, just hardwood booths with no padding or structure. Draft beer was good, burgers were significantly overcooked and I didn't taste any seasoning. Side upgrades get costly. And I really don't know how you're supposed to enjoy a burger that is too tall to eat, really it's beyond me. Just a chunk of plain overcooked hamburger with toppings.
