I had a bad day today. I didn't feel like cooking. My shiny new entertainment book came in the mail and we decided on the Tipper. I'm glad we did...We shared a plate of yam fries, the big tipper salad and a beef dip with soup. It was good. Sometimes you don't want anything fancy, you want some homecooked style food and that's what we got. The service was good. I think more people should come to the Tipper. Cute little booths, a bar with a TV, and there is something in the back that looks like more space.. Maybe I will ask next time. This is a good place to come when you don't feel like anything else. This place has a diverse selection of burgers and pastas. I went here for lunch on a weekday and it was quite empty. It can get busy at dinner on weekends or on game nights - is what the server told me. I tried the salmon burger and the grilled portebello. I was surprised that the salmon burger was so tasty! My friend and I stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner. I ordered the chicken strips with a side of house salad, and my friend ordered a pound of wings and the house salad as well. We also shared the soup of the day, which was red curry with rice. The food came out super fast, and it was all really good. The chicken strips weren't dry, the wings were super tasty, and my friend loved her salad. It's a really comfortable, laid back diner-style restaurant-slash-bar, which appeals to all age groups, from us young folks to seniors alike. We'd definitely like to come back to try more items from the menu. Menu: large breakfast menu (although no eggs benedict), served till 5 pm. Appies, burgers and sandwiches, pasta, and more. I stop in for a songwriters group once a month, and really like this place. I find the older looking interior charming, and Cam treats us with excellent service. He goes above and beyond. The food and atmosphere is simple, nothing too fancy. But good. It is a pub. If you're looking for fine cuisine, white glove service, and world class decor, go somewhere else, dress up, and spend 3 times as much. If you want a simple, affordable, tasty meal, approachable atmosphere, and genuine, friendly service, this is a great spot. We always leave The Tipper feeling satisfied. They serve gluten free buns (actually tasty and soft) for sandwiches, upon request, and the burger patties are gluten free. My partner usually orders the beef dip, I find it a little messy since gluten free buns can fall apart from dipping, but it is tasty. I have tried the salmon burger, which was satisfying, and the beef burger, which was tender, juicy, and flavourful, as it was just cooked enough, and not overdone. The house salad is fresh and delicious, with a homemade dressing that I wish we could take home by the bottle. JJ Bean coffee is a nice touch. I'm admittedly a bit of a fish out of water. I came up to Vancouver from San Francisco to take a tour of UBC, and on my very tight budget, opted for the Day's Inn Metro. Across the street, I stumbled across The Tipper almost completely by accident, and I'm incredibly glad that I did. I've come to The Tipper now for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I think it's safe to say that this is the best that it gets. The staff is incredibly sweet and friendly, the atmosphere is wonderfully cozy and inviting, and the food is just fantastic. Hands down the best omelet I've ever had, and that's saying quite a bit! The food is very reasonably priced, and the soothing overhead music is nicely complimented by some very cool paintings on the wall, creating a very welcoming atmosphere. Cozy atmosphere, soft indy wake-up music, JJ bean coffee = perfect ambiance for any age, you could take your parents here or little cousin or roomates. Bonus for having booths. Nutella buckwheat pancakes for me, big breakfast for my sweetie with all the usual favs -- plus amazing home-style potatoes. Loved our attentive waitress-- 3 coffee refills. A little pricey to make it a weekly affair (average prices, no deals really except for quality and excellent portion size) but the value is well worth it. This is Canadian comfort food. I came here for one of their breakfasts and came to get a standard with scrambled eggs. The service was timed respectfully as breakfast food is easier to prepare. The customer serivce was friendly and the price was fair market value. I did come here for a burger back when it was a mom and pop shop, however, came recently as a modern modern decor with a menu that is more or less the same. My only minor complaint is that I did ask for tea and the waitress forgot but she did apologize. read more

If you look in the back, there's actually a "secret" room by the washroom that can be used for music, theatre or meetings. Best part of all, there's no cost for booking that space. Just talk with Colin or Cameron, and they'll be more than happy to set you up. My band had the wonderful pleasure of performing here twice, and it was such an amazing experience. Came for breakfast with hubby and 2 kids. Walked in past the "seat yourself" sign, one of the kidlets had to use the washroom straight away, so she walked to the back, and was reprimanded that we can't go to the back room as there was a private function going on. Explained about the impending puddle on the floor, while approaching a new table to sit at. From behind the bar someone shouted at us to please choose one of the other smaller tables, as they have 7 regulars that come in every Sunday and sit at our chosen booth. At this stage I can't say we felt welcome. Server came over and was underwhelming, mumbling, no eye contact, no smiles to the kids even. My daughter asked whether they have chocolate milk, and server mumbled "kinda...powder...like Nesquick". We were fine with that. She came back bringing everyone else's drinks, saying that their hot chocolate powder doesn't want to mix with the cold milk. Well duh! Of course it doesn't, but HC powder isn't Nesquick. Wish she would just have said no to start out with. The menu said to ask the server about their "creations for kids" so we did. There was no such thing. She just pointed at the add-ons on the menu and told us to pick from there. Makes for an expensive kids meal at about $2.50 per item. Kids wanted the pancakes. Sorry, we don't make pancakes anymore. But we checked the menu before we came here because we promised them pancakes, and its still on your menu. Just "sorry, only French toast". Kids chose 3 items, which she screwed up and had to go change. We ordered the Buffalo Joe's (14.50) and Big Breakfast (13.00). The potatoes were spectacular, and I'm usually the one who leaves it on my plate. The food was otherwise fine. But just that, ok, not amazing or different. Not worth the price if i can get the same food at an all-day breakfast diner down the road for 5 bucks. I am aware that there is not much you could do with bacon, eggs and sausages, which is exactly why the service and ambience has to shine at a breakfast place, which The Tipper sadly didn't. I came upon The Tipper in the Entertainment Book and although it was out of the way, a quick glance on Yelp encouraged me to give it a try. Had an early September dinner here and the place was empty, although that afforded us nice window seats and a quiet view of the sun setting over an unseasonable yet pleasant warm evening. Salmon burger: quite tasty (as yelped by others). Yam fries: ditto (in all its pure fried simplicity..delicious). It was too much for me to eat all at once so I got my leftover yam fries to go, and our server gave me a container of the yummy dip unbidden. Nice touch. Only thing that kept my rating from being a 4 is my friend's underwhelming pasta dish. Draught on special also seemed watery for some reason. Barely 3 stars I have to say. I was here now the 3rd time, even though I have never checked in on Yelp before. This time I walked in and waited to be seated or told that it is ok to seat myself. The server ask if I wanted to order take out but I said just drink in the restaurant. After I seated myself I ordered a beer which came soon enough. After mt friend arrived it turned sad. It took us quite a while to get a 2nd drink and water refill. The original server seemed to ignore us even though we tried to stare her down and even waved, but no reaction. Only after waving down the bartender we got served. Once we drunk our second beer we decided that they don't deserve our patronage and did not really seem to care anyway. Too bad because it is the only real pub to walk to from our place on Slocan and 29th. Hopefully with the development of the area come more because I won't be back. read more

And they do it well. I come often because I like the staff (eclectic and friendly folks) and have never had bad food. In fact everything has been downright yummy and hearty, penne tip, eggs benny, sangria, apple crumble,Mmmmm. It's not 5 star level dining. But not expecting that at this price point. I was surprised to see a negative yelp review about the owner because I have witnessed him going out of his way to be kind to street people, people with disabilities and animals. And this was when no one was watching and no financial gain to be had. How can you fault that? Who knows maybe he read the review, didn't realize he was coming across and upped his game. They have the usual breakfast standards, as well as burgers, sandwiches, and a few other things. The hamburgers are very good and customizable with all the classic add-ons. The room is comfortable with mostly booth seating and dark wood paneling and local art on the walls. The service is casual and friendly, as it should be in a diner, and the staff seem to enjoy working there, which is nice to see. There is also a nice little bar with maybe 8 seats up front and a small but thoughtful selection of beer on tap as well as full hard bar. It's a nice place to stop in for a drink or two and there are usually a couple of locals sitting at the bar in the evening. The backroom has a stage where they host live music and it has a cool secret bar feel to it, tucked away at the back of the restaurant. read more

First of all, I like going to places that are not chains and are locally owned. I just went to the tipper yesterday and had a great time. The owner, Colin, was very accommodating and friendly. He took the time to talk to us, and explain any questions we had. I believe they had just opened about 3 months ago. There are also very nice paintings on sale that decorate the walls vibrantly. The food is a reasonable price and quite good. We had yam fries and wings to start - made fresh and possibly the BEST wings I have ever tasted. As the entrée, I had the cola candied salmon - a very interesting taste, which i enjoyed. It had a sweet hardened glaze on top and the middle was very tender. We came here on a "why not try this place" kinda night. Walked in and sat ourselves, place looked kinda hip / hipster so not quite sure how the food was gonna be. I ordered the Braised chuck roast beef dip, And the wife ordered the Salmon hot plate. Gotta say, it was well worth eating. Good food, awesome staff, good service, and the owner thinks he is funny (he is actually, but don't tell him that). We have since been back and tried different things, it is all good. Originally tried to get a table at Whitespot on Kingsway but didn't realize it was Father's day - the place was packed so drove down a few blocks and stopped at the Tipper. I live in the area so have passed this restaurant many a times. Good thing we tried it because boyfriend and I were really happy with everything. Seated ourselves upon arrival - as directed by the sandwich board. Server came promptly with waters and got our drink orders. Food was delicious (local, free ranged eggs) and great quality. I was impressed my scrambled eggs did not come from a carton, as they usually are at chain breakfast places. Noticed the steak sandwich was offered at $13.5 which is a steal. The owner came by several times to drop off food, clear plates, refill waters and process our payment - seemed like a great guy. Overall, we were really impressed with this eatery. It looked like the place was mostly frequented by locals. Definitely will return and is now our weekend brunch spot! read more

Really a terrific spot for breakfast. We went there on New Year's Day when they were one of the few spots which was open (that was not the reason we went!) and the sourdough BLT was masterful. The lettuce and spring greens covering the strips of fine bacon like a handkerchief but a handkerchief made of organic material which would be unpleasant and ineffective. The hand cut potatoes were delicious and made me expect to see Edward Scissorhands hard at work in the kitchen (I didn't).
