So we came back and my daughter ordered the Babka French Toast again. She didn't ask me to share it with her but simply made sure to stop eating after she had finished about half the dish. Much appreciated as this allowed me to order something different. I had The Classic which came with Eggs, mushroom & broccolini, potato rosti, baked beans, roasted tomato and housemade sourdough. We also ordered a Nutelle Hot Chocolate and Matcha Oat Latte. I loved The Classic. While I do enjoy trying new things all the time, I think I'm a Classic girl at heart. I often fight the urge to order the tried and true for the sake of trying new things, but I'm ever so happy on those occasions where I give in and order something more Classic. Baked beans and toast remind me of family trips to England. Havn't gone for one of those in years, but I do have some good memories of them. When they're on sale here, we sometimes like to buy cans of Heinz British style baked beans, and I sometimes make my own homemade version of baked beans to store in our freezer. I don't often see baked beans on brunch menus so this was a bit of a special occasion for me to be able to order something with baked beans for brunch. Personally, I would have preferred the beans to have been just a little bit softer. Nothing wrong with them. They were fully cooked but perhaps just a little bit firmer than I'd have liked. I prefer my beans very soft and I tend to be like that with a lot of foods in general. My hubby prefers his foods firmer, and I like my foods softer. It's a personal preference. Otherwise, I very much enjoyed this dish and am very likely to order it again sometime! Oh, the potato rosti in my dish was awesome as well. This meal was so filling though that I only ate one small corner of the potato rosti and then took the rest home to eat as I was very full already from everything else I had eaten from the plate. read more

Wow how did I miss this place which is just across from the Lonsdale Quay marketplace? Wonderful brunch spot with fantastic pastries and friendly staff. - Baked custard tart at Catch 122 - basically a giant Dan Tat. If you love Dan tats you got to get this. - all of the other pastries looked incredible and I will be back for sure to try them. - the mushroom toast is like Instagram worthy. It comes with this amazing fried I'm not sure what but it's great looking. Poached eggs too. - side of potatoes comes in a pan with aioli on top of each one. The aioli is fantastic. The potatoes crunchy and flavourful but not too fried at all. - ok the highlight for me is the KFC fusion Dutch baby. I've never heard of a dish like this before. The classic Dutch baby pancake with Korean ingredients - gochujang flavoured KFC, kimchi, veggies, an egg in the middle bibimbap style. The lower londsdale location is their second location (from Gastown) and the space offers alot of seating. We went during a saturday and there was no wait. We ordered the friend chicken and waffles, the portion was huge. The fried chicken was crispy and tender. The salmon bagel was on the smaller side but the poached egg was perfectly runny. We came here for brunch on a weekend and was surprised to find it not too busy which was music to our ears. We had a little one in tow and they are very baby/kid/family friendly. We then got the Chicken N French Toast and the Pulled BBQ Pork Shoulder benny. I found the chicken a bit dry for my liking but did enjoy the french toast twist rather then the usual waffles. First time trying their pastries! I had the Double Baked Ferrero Rocher croissant and it was crunchy, flaky and chocolate-y! The Yuzu Creme Brulee Cronut was soft but flaky and the yuzu cream provided a very tart flavour. Both were delish! We also tried the Tiramisu latte which had tiramisu cream cheese topping and it was very tasty. The food was amazing and creative. The appys for Korean style steak tartar and grilled octopus were savoury but mouth watering. Perfect with their cocktails. Everything was seasoned well with hints of sweet and spice. The Sirloin was seasoned well and not over-cooked. The potato cake garnish paired very well and was extremely tasty. To sum up our experience, my hat's off to a really nice non-chain restaurant that stands out from the uniformity of corporate chains :-) We all really enjoyed their unique approach to breakfast comfort food. This place was super busy so I definitely recommend a reservation but the food was amazing so definitely worth it! Our server was sweet and explained some of the menu items. In terms of food, I highly recommend the churros (they were so fluffy on the inside but crunchy on the outside) and the steak and eggs for brunch. It was such a great combo of flavors. Their coffee was really good and we also tried the mimosa flight. I will say I don't think the mimosa flight was completely worth it because the portions are pretty small. The aroma of this place completely and captures all of your senses. The food is so incredibly delicious. Kudos to this chef. another big fave of mine is that they have a huge variety of mocktails and yummy unique hot drinks. The hostess and waitresses are super sweet and the place is all dressed up in Christmasy decorations with a tree right now...very cute. Honestly, there are so many things on this menu that look absolutely scrumptious and very unique. We went here for brunch and opted for the steak and eggs that had a Korean and Japanese inspiration with kimchi, edamame but best of all this rice "vessel" which was crispy perfection on the outside and soft on the inside. I also got the huevos rancheros with the chorizo patty... OMG, best one I've had outside of Mexico. The flavour bombs that this restaurant gives out is insanity. Despite having been here multiple times (the only brunch place to have this honour in Van) I realised I never reviewed Catch 122. Located somewhat inconveniently in North Van, their dishes remind me of Melbourne Asian-inspired brunch menu. Place was bright and airy with nice lighting from the floor to ceiling windows. Service was just the right amount of friendly, not overbearing yet attentive enough to make sure water is never empty. Drinks were unfortunately very average across the board. KFC Dutch Baby Baked Pancake ($23) 9/10 Despite not being recommended by the staffs (apparently their bestsellers are eggs benedict, steak&bulgogi, and chicken&waffle), I found this dish to be the best in terms of uniqueness and flavour profile. Fusion style brunch can be tricky to pull off, yet Catch 122 managed to do so by combining Korean spicy gochujang sauce with Western style pancake and fried chicken offerings. All the other sides (kimchi, aioli, etc.) also work together to elevate the dish even more. Cauliflower Benny ($19) 8.5/10 A vegetarian take on traditional benny, this one used croquette instead of english muffin. I typically avoid eggs benedict as I often found it to be and overwhelmingly eggy dish, but this one was quite light due to the veggies and pickles. Probably not for everyone, but it is one of the few egg benedict dishes I could enjoy. Cornflakes Hazelnut Babka French Toast ($22) 8/10 A twist of traditional brioche french toast by using babka and deep frying it ala HK french toast. This was right up my alley, perfectly crunchy, sweet, yet also balanced by espresso cream and berries. I also liked how they separated the maple syrup so you can adjust based on preference. Please make this available during weekday as well. Tres Leches Dutch Baby Pancake ($19) 6/10 Surprisingly, even as a sweet brunch lover, I found this dish to be underwhelming. As somebody who like tres leches cake, I found that this dish didn't really resemble the actual cake in terms of flavour. The semifreddo and whip also really make this dish heavy. Chorizo Breakfast Sandwich ($21) 5/10 I only tried a bit from my friend's other but I remember it being very mediocre. Portion was very big so she couldn't finish. Terrible service. The staff were polite and did not say anything inappropriate, but I was seated and then completely ignored for about 20 minutes. About 15 minutes in, another group was seated at the table next to me. Their order was taken and their drinks were delivered before anyone even checked on me. I tried the usual signals in this situation pushing my menu away and making eye contact but multiple staff members looked in my direction and continued serving everyone else. Eventually, I left with only a glass of water on the table and no food, still hungry. I was genuinely excited to try this place. The food looks good, but it is not cheap and not worth it if you have to wait an excessive amount of time just to place an order. I also want to note that as a woman of color, I frequently experience different standards of service, and this interaction felt consistent with discrimination and bias I have encountered elsewhere. read more

Came here on a Friday around 10:30a, one other customer sitting inside. I decided to take an outside table. I was served immediately. After receiving my drink and food at about 10:40a, another table of 10 sat outside across the patio & I was entirely forgotten about. Three different servers came outside during that time but none of them looked in my direction or stayed outside long enough for me to get their attention until I finally got the attention of one at 11:20a to get me my bill and box for my food. Only a box was brought and I had to ask for my bill a second time. Wow I came because this place was recommended by the NYT, and it really met those high expectations. I ordered the bulgogi steak and egg. First impressions were amazing, the plate was so nicely plated with such an eclectic and colourful collection of veggies and sauces. I ordered the steak medium rare but it came out a bit overcooked (~medium ish) which was a little unfortunate, but thankfully it was still very delicious. It was a very tender and flavourful cut, well-cooked and just generally good quality meat. The pecorino rice cake that the steak sat atop was really surprisingly; it was a nice, lighter complement to the steak and egg at first. But, it did quickly get heavier and too soggy to properly enjoy. The greens were amazing, fresh leafy veggies with its light dressing and the Korean peanut spice was definitely a new combo for me - worked really well imo. The diced kimchi was really delicious, flavour was really authentic, and sometimes I don't like crunching on the hard cabbage stems, so this was a win-win for me. It was a really good pairing with the egg, especially with the runny yolk. The pureed edamame was interesting - I wasn't really a fan (bland at times, weird aftertaste otherwise), but I think it was a pretty creative/interesting concept. The broccolini was the low point - it was undercooked and really, really difficult to chew on. I didn't finish this :( My friend ordered the duck confit, which was also really yummy. The duck was very flavourful and the sourdough underneath was surprisingly good. The side greens were great too - none of the peanut flavour of mine, but same fresh, crisp, light flavour throughout. We also ordered the smashed fried potatoes, of which only two of those three words were really true. The potatoes were certainly fried but definitely were not smashed at all. Still, they were very very delicious - soft and fluffy in each bite, paired with a nice aioli, and I liked the mix-match of the regular (yukon gold?) potatoes and the purple potatoes. Portion size was also surprisingly large for an appetiser/side. Very delicious meal overall, I was really pleasantly surprised at how good everything turned out. Always a lovely experience here. Great location and beautiful ambiance indoors. Service is good. It meets expectations. Parking is a bit more difficult for this area in general if you are driving, but within walking distance of hotels and coastal activities. Menu is brief but includes happy hour and cocktails and the right quantity of items within each category. Everything is plated well and tastes great. Catch 122 recently moved to the Shipyards area of North Van, and I think the new location suits them well! I visited for the first time a couple weeks ago, immediately falling in love with the airy, yet warm feel. Upscale casual is definitely the vibe here. The menu is extensive, so it took me awhile to decide. Thankful for the staff's kindness and patience. From cafe drinks to cocktails, brunch to baked goods, foodies will rejoice here! I was super impressed with both items I ordered, so if you're looking for suggestions I would look at: 1. Yuzu cloud - a light, fruity, non-alc drink. Sets the right mood for brunch and acts as a great palate cleanser for the decadence to follow! 2. Cauliflower benny - not your average eggs benedict! A croquette as the base was new to me, as was having a vegetable (carrot) puree to go along with this brunch classic. It all worked so well! My friend and I couldn't tell whether this place was a fusion brunch place, or the exact cuisine, but we ended up getting the bulgogi steak n' egg and the pulled pork BBQ egg benedict to share. Both dishes were phenomenal. Although I expected to like the bulgogi steak n' egg more than the benedict, I would much more recommend someone the benedict. With the pulled pork, it takes such a unique twist with so much more flavor and the salad and potatoes complements the dish so well. On the other hand, the bulgogi steak n' egg was delicious, however, I wasn't the biggest fan of the kimchi (the seasoning was not quite right) and the dressing/sauces for the salad were 'meh'. But! The dishes were a little too dry until we popped the egg into the meat (I highly recommend doing this). The bulgogi steak and eggs was interesting but not impressive. The food here was good. Although a few of the menu items were on the sweeter rather than the savory side, and yes, we were told by our server and expected this. I heard about Catch 122 googling best brunch downtown and Catch 122 is on the list. I made reservations and arrived right at time for 11:30am. We walked to Catch 122 about 15 minutes in the heat 26 degrees. I guess I should not expect but they didn't have A/C so we were sweating for a bit before we got used to the warmth. The restaurant is spacious and I love the decor with brickwork wall and wood for tables and chairs. We needed water as it was hot and so didn't order any beverages. We went straight to food. I order The BELT (bacon, egg, lettuce and tomatoe). It was really delicious and I loved the crunch from bacon and the fried egg made dish more decadent. The sourdough bread was toasted to perfect crunch with what I believe to butter. It was paired with homemade chips and was light and crispy and my husband couldn't stop eating my chips! That's ok, I am watching my carb intake. My hubby ordered the Bulgogi Steak & Eggs and the steak was perfectly cooked. He enjoyed this dish and we both left full and warm and needed to walk it off. Well. I'd like to keep this my best hidden secret. But ill tell you a little bit more about this cute cafe thats not so small tucked away in the streets of gastown. When you enter the Cafe it gives you chill vibes and the aroma of the food is bomb. The baked goods in the cabinet are a must, whether you choose to stay or take to go. Big shout outs to the patisserie chefs eh. The food is always on point. Their menu is OG and has food game, either way you're leaving with a belly full of Greatness. The only thing I gotta say which makes my review a 4. Is the non existent AC. That's a bit disappointing. That you get warm while you're eating. The space is really nice and spacious but when the heat rises you just feel a little uncomfortable. I ordered the grown up hot chocolate. Delicious. My go to is always the classic. Why. Because of the potato rosti. Yes I welcome carbs. All day everyday. Please support this delicious establishment. But also please consider getting AC at some point. read more
