The Toss is our Friday lunch routine. Hubby always gets the Baja Cobb and swaps out 2 of the toppings for something else. You are allowed 2 swap max. I always get the Zesty with chicken added. Lately they have a deal of the week. It's a great way to try a a new salad or sandwich and save a few dollars! This week was a spinach, strawberry, goat cheese, oranges and bacon salad. Greeted by flies when I first walk in - a risk of an open air establishment, but still. It was my first time here, I got excited by the concept for the spicy beef salad. I ordered that, then watched as what I felt was a stingy amount of mix-ins was applied. Avocado was left off. Cilantro was left off. I reminded her, then she added what I considered a very tiny amount of cilantro. When I asked for "a little more cilantro," I was charged for an extra item. I got duped! Highly rated on yelp. Who are these reviewers? I went three separate times. Gave them a chance three times coz I thought it was a me problem. First time, got the pesto chicken wrap - it was meh, needed more pesto. Tasted really dry. No biggie, probably I didn't order right since they're known for their salads. Second time, got the magnolia salad - an underwhelming salad. Made me feel like a goat. This time, lady at the counter was busy hating on people picking up large orders. I'm self aware enough to associate that experience leaving such a bad taste that's why I gave this place another visit. Third and last time, I got the chicken noodle salad. Favorite local lunch spot! I have had several salads from the menu and built my own and they are all always delicious. My husband really likes the chicken pesto panini on their house made focaccia. We have also tried a couple of their rotating daily soups and they are great as well. The salads are definitely expensive but they are very big and filling. The service is quick and friendly! This review is a year overdue. I used to work right across the street from The Toss and went there almost daily to get my usual, the Chicken Tinga Bowl. After relocating to Austin, TX, I've been craving that bowl ever since I left California. There have been many salad bars that have opened up around me that are just 'meh', but what sets The Toss apart is the hospitality of its owner. She is incredibly kind and welcoming, treating her customers like they are all regulars. The Toss is located a few blocks from the heart of San Carlos, in a quiet and safe neighborhood. The Toss is San Carlos's equivalent of Mixt, with its wall of leafy greens, counter full of tasty salad ingredients, and long menu of salad combinations. We came here on Tuesday, my first day of working from home; it was nice to bike over with my wife and eat lunch together. We got the Siesta and a cup of chicken noodle soup. The salad had kale, quinoa, beans, pepitas, tomatoes, and avocado, all with a zesty jalapeño dressing. The chicken noodle soup came with a piece of focaccia. The bowls sounded really good, so looking forward to coming back some time! If you eat in your salad comes in a big bowl (not a disposable container), so that's nice. There's a kid's salad, which my son got once and claimed to like (lettuce with no dressing is one of his favorite vegetables, kids are weird). The location is further down Laurel away from the main downtown drag past Trader Joe's. This place is fantastic! I just started a new job in SF and sometimes I need to come by San Carlos... this will be my new spot. The salads here are massive, enough for two servings sometimes. Well, let me start out by saying this place is extremely popular- and what a great concept: fast food salad bar! The line was out the door. We ordered a Cobb salad without bacon or chicken. I substituted with cucumber and edamame. I still payed the full $16.95 even without the meat. The salad was just ok- I found that the lettuce was cut in very large pieces. Once I ate all of goodies, I was left with a bowl plain old lettuce. Basically, the ratio of lettuce to toppings was way off. And considering they charge almost $20 per salad, I would expect the toppings to be more generous. Compared to other Cobb salads that I have had elsewhere, including a popular restaurant down on Laurel, this was very disappointing. Not sure I would go back. read more

This was my first time here, and I saw some decent reviews. There weren't too many salad bar options in the area and this came up as one of the best, and closest, to where we were. With healthy foods being super expensive, and fast food being significantly cheaper, it was nice to find this place. The servings were healthy in size and content, and the space was nicely lit with natural sunlight. Outdoor dining was available as well, and they managed to seat my family of seven. The staff was nice, and they spoke Spanish which is a huge plus to reach more in the community. The only thing that makes this place a little challenging is how overwhelming the menu is. Although there is no pressure to order right away, I felt it anyway. Looking at that menu gave me anxiety and I think it best to check the menu before going to order. I can't believe I've only recently discovered this place!!! At least I'm glad I did it in time for the cooler weather. This place is amazing! They have a great assortment of cold salads, sandwiches, warm bowls, and soups. My husband and I were looking for a soup and salad place for my father-in-law's birthday party. We found The Toss through our search efforts. In addition to salads and sandwiches they also have two soups each day. One is always vegetarian and the other has meat or fish in it. Tracy was so nice to work with us on our order. She was so accommodating throughout the process. On the day I went to pick up the order her staff was also very nice and helped me load the order into my car. We've tried a variety of dishes and each time are blown away by the flavors. For soup, we've tried the veg bok choy, chicken pasole, salmon chowder, and the veg white bean soup. Each one has been outstanding, but our favorite is the chicken pasole. The lime flavor really comes out in this dish. Dunk some of the focaccio bread in to make sure you get all of the broth. For warm bowls our favorite is the Shrimp Phuket. We love the zing of heat that comes with the dish. The peanut sauce isn't too overpowering either. We also tried the coyote and harvest. The harvest is nice with tofu added to it. We tried the corfu salad as well. Everything we've had hear has been unique. I appreciate the creativity of their menu. The only sandwich we've tried is pesto chicken and I really liked it. It's big enough to share with a side soup. My family loves soup and I know this will become a favorite within our family. It appears I'm discovering the peninsula one suburb at a time as I venture from San Jose back to the city on an almost weekly basis. San Carlos was my town of choice on this particular day because I saw that this salad cafe was rated pretty highly and that was exactly what I wanted for lunch. As I came upon it, I noticed it was easiest the busiest place on this part of Laurel Street, which I believe is the town's main thoroughfare if you don't count El Camino Real. Owner Tracy Everett obviously knew what she was doing when she opened this bustling cafe. It was like Mixt without the attitude. You can design your own salad Chipotle-style or choose one of their dozen specialty salads, three warm bowls, or four focaccia sandwiches. I opted for the $14.50 Mayan Salad, which turned out to be a sizable serving of romaine lettuce, roasted pineapple, mango, pickled onions, carrots, jicama, slivered almonds, and goat cheese topped with pieces of achiote roasted chicken, all of it lightly tossed in a cilantro-lime dressing (photo: http://bit.ly/2wAIqcq). While I thought the price point was a tad high, I recognize the quality of the locally sourced ingredients really mandated that, and the refreshing result was worth it.
