Wow is my first thought. Darn I wish this was in San Diego was my second. I travel here a lot for business and can't begin to tell you how excited I am to have found my new regular spot! High quality salads that do not skimp on the toppings. I had the Cobb and the bacon is REAL (and thick) bacon slices that are cut up. Loved the wall of lettuce and all the options I had. Oh and the ranch dressing is legit. They have a great menu and you can add/subtract as needed. Super friendly staff who were patient with this first timer. Seriously good. It appears I'm discovering the peninsula one suburb at a time as I venture from San Jose back to the city on an almost weekly basis. San Carlos was my town of choice on this particular day because I saw that this salad cafe was rated pretty highly and that was exactly what I wanted for lunch. As I came upon it, I noticed it was easiest the busiest place on this part of Laurel Street, which I believe is the town's main thoroughfare if you don't count El Camino Real. Owner Tracy Everett obviously knew what she was doing when she opened this bustling cafe. It was like Mixt without the attitude. You can design your own salad Chipotle-style or choose one of their dozen specialty salads, three warm bowls, or four focaccia sandwiches. I opted for the $14.50 Mayan Salad, which turned out to be a sizable serving of romaine lettuce, roasted pineapple, mango, pickled onions, carrots, jicama, slivered almonds, and goat cheese topped with pieces of achiote roasted chicken, all of it lightly tossed in a cilantro-lime dressing (photo: http://bit.ly/2wAIqcq). While I thought the price point was a tad high, I recognize the quality of the locally sourced ingredients really mandated that, and the refreshing result was worth it. Not a huge salad person. Always had that weird association that salad = rabbit food. But I really enjoyed the food at The Toss today! Generous serving of food, friendly staff, and cozy environment. Mayan: something new and off the regular menu. In the bowl you have lettuce, pineapple, pickled onions, jicama, almond, grilled chicken, and blue cheese, all topped off with a cilantro lime dressing. Super refreshing for that hot summer day. We'll balanced in terms of acidity and sweetness. Wanted to grab a cookie off the cookie tower but already had enough sugar for the day. I must say, this place really impressed me! Got the Coyote bowl for takeout today for lunch, and it was delicious! It has house-made turkey chorizo atop a bed of cilantro-lime rice topped with black beans, corn pico de gallo, shredded romaine lettuce. It also comes with a good portion of avocado with a paprika crema drizzle, and cilantro lime sauce on the side! The turkey chorizo was really good! It was full of flavor, and the bowl had a generous portion of it in big chunks too! It is a little pricey for what it is, but it definitely tastes good and fresh!! read more

Nice quaint cafe in San Carlos, abundance of fresh salad options for customization. They also serve sandwiches too like the Pesto Chicken sandwich . the oatmeal cookies here are KILLER. When you're opting for healthy, and in San Carlos, you can't go wrong with the Toss. i believe we talked to the owner in our first visit in December, extremely nice. TL;DR: For the price of these salads ($17-20), I'd expect a little more and I'd expect the chicken and other proteins to be really fresh. The chicken tastes like it is store bought out of a packet or has been sitting in the fridge for a few days. Freshness of Salad lettuce: 3.5 stars - The lettuce is fresh, crunchy, no browning. This is a baseline expectation though. Freshness of chicken/proteins: 1 star - It has that frozen and left thawed in fridge for too long taste or bought from freezer section of the store and defrosted. It just doesn't fit in right with the salad unless you drench it in dressing. - They give you very little. I would say less than 4oz of chicken which is not standard. Freshness of other ingredients: 4 stars - Other items (black beans, corn, carrots, cabbage, etc) are pretty fresh and taste good. Bacon: 5 stars - Adds perfect crunch and salt Dressings: 2 stars - They are just okay. They don't taste that unique and some taste heavy with mayo or heavy cream. read more

I've tried their salads twice, using a meal delivery service. The first time I ordered geisha and the second time the spicy salad with tofu instead of meat. I unfortunately did not enjoy both. Not sure if this is the takeout experience, my salad was super dry, greens were chewy and the dressing was too acidic. I had to throw out half my spicy salad. I did get some flavors in there but the lettuce and cabbage was just too dry even with the dressing. Normally after the dentist cleans my teeth, I don't want to eat right away and ruin all that hard work, but I didn't get out of there until 12:15 and I was hungry! Laurel Street (where my dentist is) is a goldmine for great lunch spots. Lately some good ones have started to spring up at the southern end, to keep The Refuge company. I very much enjoyed the Salt Box, and now, directly across the street from Dr. Loomis is The Toss. It's hard to find a great salad place, with interesting choices and perfectly fresh ingredients. I got the Corfu-sweet gem lettuce, sun-dried tomatoes, marinated artichokes, pickled red onion, crispy garbanzos, kalamata olives, feta cheese, roasted chicken champagne vinaigrette $13.75. Not generally a feta fan so I asked them to leave that off. They dry their own tomatoes and the difference is obvious. Those and the pickled onions were particularly tasty. I notice when I got to the register that the garbanzos had been omitted and the cashier (who turned out to be the owner) quickly had them added, although they were not crispy as described. I would love to try the crispy ones sometime. The owner/cashier, Tracy, brought my plate over to the table and brought me water, as well, an unexpectedly welcoming touch. The whole front of the shop opens up to the patio/sidewalk, making it feel spacious. The layout is such that the door where you enter is opposite the cashier stand, and the line for the salad prep is on the opposite side. They might want to rethink that, because it tends to make things bunch up when it gets more crowded. I wish there were a listing of the toss ins above where they are mixed to make selection and planning the perfect "design your own" salad easier. It would probably speed things up too. The staff all had great attitudes. I like that they really know how to toss the salad properly so everything gets well integrated. I will definitely come back! The salads here are good, as one would hope. The produce used is fresh and the protein is good quality. They have many well marked options for those that are gluten free or vegan which makes it easy to choose while you're scanning the menu. Will I be coming back here? Ehh, probably not. While the food is good and the location is very silicon valley, the price is way too much for me to justify. My meal was over $15 and that's way too much for me to pay for an average sized lunch salad. read more

I was so disappointed to be disappointed in my experience today. I wfh and rarely get out for lunch. Adding stars for the grilled shrimp! A chilly day, so I ordered the warm Phuket bowl with shrimp. Unfortunately, it was cold. SO cold. Like never started warm, cold. I ordered egg, but could barely find any egg. And the majority of the salad was red cabbage. Also, the mango didn't seem fresh or ripe. I ate half. The rest of it was wet red cabbage. I was sad about the salad. I will however, give The Toss another shot. I think walk-in is probably better. Location reminds me of mixt greens mashed with a posh yogurt shop. - TOPPING VARIETY: As a pluto's fan, I'm used to getting a wider variety of toppings and the option for grilled bread and turkey instead of chicken. - DRESSING: wasn't a huge fan of the balsamic, not as creamy as pluto's and the champagne vinaigrette ended up separating, so the tasty acidic vinaigrette on the bottom never made it to my salad. Great array of salads. Everything is very tasty. The one MAJOR downside on their DoorDash app is that they don't let you subtract items that people may not like in their salads like onions and cheese from the salads. They only let you add stuff. Not sure why this has not been fixed. Those of us who don't like onions or cheese or whatever should be able to subtract out things from the premade salads. We should also be able to choose the dressing. I personally like balsamic vinaigrette with most salads. Otherwise an exceptional array of salads. read more

Just got my nails done from next-door decided I was gonna go get a salad because the salad at the Thomas is usually really really really good and plentiful so I decided to order the chicken Tinga salad which I'm very familiar with and watching the server. She put D eat the lettuce in the bowls and then she stack the bowls on top of each other, which kind of amaze me that she did it right in front of me. She put a bowl inside of the other bowl that had lettuce Then. then I thought I should say something, but I'm not going to so I'd let that go. This is the cutest and best soup and salad place in the Bay Area. I got the Baja Cobb and it had half an avocado, grilled chicken and other yummy toppings! Everything was fresh and reasonably priced. They even have buy one salad get one half off after 3pm. Salads are pretty big so I didn't take advantage of that offer today. They have beer and wine too! Served this as a salad for a dinner I was hosting with take-out food and there was nothing left at the end of dinner. Harvest Bowl: 4/5. mixed grains, red cabbage, roasted bell peppers, onion, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, with a walnut basil pesto dressing (I had mine with no meat). Had this for lunch. Such a lovely little salad shop in San Carlos! The Toss is like a chipotle-style salad bar with both menu suggestions and custom options. If anyone has ever been to Chopt, this is exactly the same idea, but the ingredients taste more fresh. The front of the shop opens up with tables both inside and outside, and the atmosphere is bright and inviting. All of the employees were pleasant to interact with, and there was a woman, I believe she is the owner, walking around, checking in with each customer, and clearing tables as people finished their meals. As a vegan, I was glad to see tofu on the menu, but I must admit, I did not ask about the contents of the salad dressings, nor did I see them clearly listed anywhere. (Hopefully the Miso dressing on the Samauri is vegan). While the prices can be a little shocking at first glance ($15 for a salad), I don't think they are too ridiculous for a fresh salad in the area (considering other alternatives). I've driven by Toss a few times but never stopped in. My husband just noticed it and wanted salad for dinner (I thought get they were only open for lunch.) Perfect choice. Nice, clean modern interior. Some "house designed" salad choices or design your own. They also have some focaccia sandwiches and 2 soup choices. He designed his own, basic Joe stuff (olives, mushrooms tomatoes...) with balsamic dressing. He liked it. I ordered the Geisha, substituting romaine (even though there's a national warning not to eat it) for the cabbage, then they piled on the soba noodles, radish, edamame, pickled ginger (whaaat?!) wasabi peas, marinated tofu, carrots and oranges and mixed in the sesame miso dressing. Mine was better and so big I shared with him and he wants THAT one next time. Take out might be a regular for us now, he wishes it was closer to the office.
