Great local restaurant with so much history. Everything we ordered was delicious and our waitress was wonderful.

Bottom Line: If you want overpriced, below average food be sure to eat here. There are better places in Shaver. It took a very long time to get our food: 45 minutes from order to delivery and there were not a lot of people. We ate outside, which was nice. Vegetarian Plate: the Asian Sauce was straight from a bottle--overly salty with lots of sugar taste. They poured on at least 1/2 cup. The tofu was very overcooked. The veggies were both overcooked and undercooked. The tofu/veggies were cold. The rice was very hot. So the tofu/veggies sat for a great while then the rice was added. Pine Nut Salad: added grilled chicken. The chicken was fine, but the salad had lots of dark/black wilted old pieces of greens, not the "crisp greens" as noted on the menu. There was almost no blue cheese and a few tiny pieces of tomato. when the waitress asked how things were we said the vegetarian plate was cold and the salad had old greens, which she could see. Do not come here if you want to be harassed and yelled at by the manager/owner's daughter for providing honest feedback. Also, we were told to not leave a negative Yelp review but after reading others similar situations at this place.. here we go: Came here for a birthday dinner Saturday night with reservations for 10 which the table was ready right when we arrived. One guest in our party ordered swordfish which was completely undercooked, and 4 guests ordered filets. The swordfish was sent back to be cooked more. 3 of the filets had no flavor, the mushrooms were raw and not sautéed as listed on the menu. 2 people in our party requested A1 to actually eat their steaks which is not supposed to be the case when eating a filet. Another person In the party took 1 bite of the filet and immediately sent it back, describing it as meat you put into a roast and the worst steak he's ever had. The veggies look frozen. I never got my soup that comes with the $30 chicken but I didn't say anything. The potatoes could have been cooked more as well. When our bill arrived at the table, our server said she took the swordfish off, and took the cocktail off for the person who sent their filet back and didn't eat anything. You would have thought that the person who didn't eat his filet would have had his item removed from the bill. When we brought it to the servers attention, she would talk to the chef because they've never had a complaint about the filet (but if you look at the Yelp reviews there has been others who mentioned that the filets don't taste good which we wish we would've known prior). The server came back quite some time later and offered 25% off of the filet and we said that that's not justified as the filet was not eaten and immediately sent back. The server then went in the back, and came back out saying the manager refuses to take the filet off the bill because there's never been a complaint about their filet. Meanwhile, we noticed an individual standing in the doorway of the kitchen who we're assuming was the manager which she was. We acknowledged her and asked if we could speak with her. She came over to the table and we explained to her the situation and it was at that time she reiterated there has been no complaints about the food. We then explained everyone that had the filets were quite unsatisfied and We just want to provide some honest feedback. She then yelled, "fine I'll take off all the filets" we then explained we only wanted the 1 filet off that was not eaten. She then turned her back and yelled, "fine, you get your way!" Which was extremely unprofessional. The manager came back out and said, "here, they've been taken off" which was spoken in a very aggressive tone. At this point, we again let her know we were just trying to provide honest feedback being that she said no one had complained about the food before. It was at this point, she immediately stopped us and yelled in front of the whole restaurant, "Ok, guys time for a life lesson" she then went and grabbing employees and bringing them over to the table which you could tell they were embarrassed and not surprised by this manager's reaction. This is when we realized that providing this honest feedback was a lost cause. The servers and bartenders apologized on our way out. We will not be back. read more

We came back in 30 mins to check on the status of the table. She's super friendly, always helpful with making perfect recommendations and the service is always on point. The spinach salad is to die for as well as their homemade soups. This restaurant is so warm and inviting on the inside. The history of Shaver Lake is all around you. You should make reservations because they are popular and busy, but the staff is always polite even when some people are not. But the FOOD is 100% the star here. Your dinner entree comes with soup, salad and rolls, the soup changes but I have yet to have a cup of soup that I didn't like. You have a choice of a green salad or a spinach salad with their house dressing, do the spinach...my favorite! Dinner choices are steaks, chicken and seafood. All are wonderful but my favorite is their halibut...so good! Just remember to make a reservation and be nice if you don't and there is a long wait. read more

We came in to the restaurant tonight and had a wonderful time. We were greeted with a smile, and were sat quickly. All the servers were very friendly and ours was very attentive and had a great sense of humor. The drinks were very good and the food was tasty. The ambiance is amazing! With so much of the area's history in one building, you really have to include it in your tour of Shaver Lake. My family has owned a cabin in Shaver since the 60s. I'm only in my twenties but I've never eaten here and needless to say I will not be returning. It was way to over priced. I understand with COVID, prices are higher than normal but $28+ for 8 dry frozen and then microwaved looking raviolis, a small spinach salad, and a cup of "minestrone soup" that was just bell peppers and onions in some type of broth is a little ridiculous. Or $32+ or let's say 8 pieces of "shrimp scampi" if that's what it was and some rice with the side salad and cup of soup... I was baffled. The only good thing I have to say was my $18 Caesar salad was decent and the sourdough bread and butter was good. My family and I wouldn't have minded the price point if the quality of the food was decent and the proportions were larger. read more

We stayed at the Cottage behind the restaurant this weekend and had the loveliest time! Everything was clean and meticulously organized, and Justine made the whole experience SO easy! I can't say enough about the perfect hot shower in the master bath -- after a long week of camping, it was exactly what I needed! The cabin itself is so charming and surrounded by beautiful trees. Had a great evening last night at the Trading Post in Shaver Lake. We had the Calamari and Fillet of Sole. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. Their entrees are served with soup and salad too which is old school. Loved it! The staff are very friendly and helpful. They have a mixed menu with great options. We enjoyed a meal here during our long weekend at Shaver Lake. Very traditional American fare with steak, fish and vegetarian options. They don't have a kids menu, but our kids are little foodies so did great with splitting the chicken teryaki. One person in our party had the prime rib special which was well prepared, another had the tofu stir fry and loved it. My husband and I both had seafood - the sole for me and the stuffed calamari for him. They both tasted very fresh and were not oversalted which I appreciated. Also to note, all entrees come with soup AND salad. Yep, you read it right. Isn't that so cool? You never get that anymore so it felt like a lovely retro perk. Also, their house sweet and sour vinaigrette dressing is divine on the spinach salad. You have the chance to chose a spinach or green salad for the FREE salad and both are great. All the entrees come with either potato or rice and veggies. The veggies are fresh and perfectly prepared. The rise was tasty. OK, now on to dessert - their house made deserts are delicious - we literally tried one of each. They have a cocktail list and a selection of wines with a few that rotate so be sure to ask what they have. One of the highlights for us was the service. The staff is mostly female which is rare in restaurants and they were all very kind, attentive and friendly. We sat inside which is cozy and looks like a mountain cabin. We loved the Trading Post and had the best steak of our entire trip here (filet). We were lucky to be able to sit outside under the stars and next to an outdoor fireplace. I'm so glad I checked yelp because I didn't know by the name that it was a restaurant. It turned out to be the best restaurant in town. Our waitress Kelly was super friendly and told us all about the area, the fastest way to get to Yosemite and where to see waterfalls. She even lent me a blanket so I was extra toasty. The so called manager of the restaurant was my tables personal server and bartender and the food was tasty however after throwing away my half eaten plate without asking me I asked if there was something that could be done because I was disappointed that I couldn't take it home. After offering to prepare a new steak she said that wasn't available and that instead she would take off the charge of my steak from the over 150$ bill. When I asked for a new receipt she brought me a new steak. Implying she was never going to refund me and was lying about either being unable to prepare the steak or refund me. Either way it was okay because it had been resolved. However the following day I go to work and a bs complaint was made saying I was drunk at the bar in my work uniform. A total lie that the server/ manager made because she was butt hurt. The complete lack of consideration towards my profession and where I make my money is just so disrespectful and rude. I may get my food taken to go from here but I will never eat at this establishment again as they have lost my trust in customer service read more

We have been here several times over the years, but this last trip was very disappointing. Two of us got the ribs and they were tough and undercooked and were basically uneatable. My wife got the Seafood platter and the batter was over cooked and without any seasoning. My Monterey Chicken was ok but over seasoned with pepper. Ribeye steak was cooked a perfect medium-rare, but lacked flavor and some sort of sauce to go with it, so I had to ask for the A1 to get through it. Other than that, you could do a whole lot worse driving around Shaver Lake for food. Service was super friendly, which was a warm and welcome sight for us out-of-town folk. Great service. Good food. Nice ambiance. Alright, got to admit, was a bit skeptical, but wow, Trading Post proved me wrong. Crazy busy on a Sunday night. Reservations recommended. Our waitress was slammed, but still made it a point to stop by our table numerous times. Potato Skins (~$10): half a dozen potato skins service with AWESOME RANCH!!! Soup, salad & bread come with every entree. Bread: Brownie points, bread was served nice and hot. Green Salad: served with the AWESOME RANCH as well. Lettuce, grape tomatoes, olives and cucumbers. Roasted Pepper soup: good. Barbecued Ribs: Nice portion for $20. Served with a baked potato (or rice pilaf) and veggies. Stuffed New York Steak: (~$26) Also a nice portion. Sounded delicious, but when it got to me, I realized it was imitation crab. :( Other than that, the steak was good, the baked potatoes was good, and the veggies were good as well. Corkage was ~$11. We would definitely recommend this place, and we will definitely be back for more.....but next time maybe not order as much. We came home with soooo many leftovers. Well I was really taken by the lousy service and reception we had at this establishment!!!! It was Saturday night around 6:30 pm and the hostess said they had no tables and to ask the bartender if she was taking orders for food, so I politely asked her and she just had a major attitude!!! She flat out said she was the only bartender!!!The hostess said she would serve us anyways! So we sat at the bar waiting for the bartender to take our order for a drink and just ignored us completely. Another couple Sat down and she took their order immediately and just shined us on!!! We waited for a little more longer but we were just being ignored!!! So finally we just got up and left!!!!!!! The Trading Post is our favorite restaurant in Shaver. We have a cabin at Dinkey and love to end the day at The Trading Post. We enjoyed dinner there last night and all 4 of us ate every bite. They are so consistent even in these trying times, everything was the same as last year. We enjoy eating on their patio so we were happy to sit outside. Great little place in Shaver Lake with nice outdoor dining under the pines. Our server, Carol, from Brazil, was wonderful. She knew how everything was prepared, and we went with seafood, although this place has impressive options for the beef eaters. Nice wine selection from Paso Robles. You get a salad, soup, veggies, and either rice pilaf or a baked potato with your entree'. Sunday is pasta special night. Lively bar inside. Cute place. Our waitress was condescending when taking our order. Food was just okay for the price. The steak was cooked perfectly but the calamari was thin and rubbery. They put an automatic 20% gratuity for any group over 6 people. FYI. UPDATE: After posting my original Yelp from my dinner table, the server came back to the table to apologize for being condescending. She said she saw me Yelping right in front of her (because she was looking over my shoulder). The owner came over and was very upset saying I was bashing them on Yelp. I guess the server was his sister. WOW! Very uncomfortable for everyone at our table. Yelp is to provide feedback for improvement. These people obviously don't want feedback and will confront you if you Yelp while still in their restaurant. I won't be back! read more

We visit Shaver Lake on a yearly basis, but have never tried the Trading Post, so this past weekend, we were in the mood for steaks and visited for dinner. The positives: The server was very nice and did a great job. The soup was amazing. Loved it. Good bread. Super cute outdoor area that is by reservation during good weather. The negatives: I got the New York, and my boyfriend got a rib eye. For the record, he thinks rib eyes are the best and most flavorful cut, so that is what he always orders when out, and orders medium or medium rare depending on what that restaurant's typical medium is (and he does talk to the server to discern). Basically, it has to be at least a little pink. His was so over-cooked that it was hard to cut and even looked dry. Needless to say, there was zero pink at all, and it was a totally ruined steak. So much so, that when our server came by, we didn't even have to say anything...she looked at his steak, made a face and asked if it was overdone. She ended up comping his beer because of it. My New York was cooked just right, but was totally bland. It seemed like it wasn't quality meat due to the lack of flavor, and they didn't even attempt to season it. The vegetables for all of our party were way undercooked (carrots and zucchini I couldn't stab with a fork). We really should have walked out when we saw that the menu had some statement about not being responsible for overcooked steaks. For that reason, I don't think our experience was just a fluke. The worst part was the price tag for such an awful meal. It's not expensive if it's quality, but I hate paying $100 for a meal that plain sucks. Disappointment would be an understatement, frustrating was more fitting. It absolutely did not live up to its claim of being fine dining or quality food. read more

This restaurant in the mountains has the finest best calamari wanted by at a restaurant we had a group of eight and the filet mignon was excellent rib steak was excellent the halibut was excellent the soul fish was excellent you cannot beat this with free soup and salad which is extra and any restaurant that has fine food paying at least 16 and eight dollars for soup oil on the house and the soup was good you can't beat this with a stickThe service was fine also my only drawback is that in the summer there needs to be put in a fan in the dining room they have one by the bar come in the winter we won't need a fan but this summer we do I think it's affordable to do so that's a note to the owner read more

We stopped in for a cocktail and bite while passing through.. it was a cold rainy day and we were so happy to find this local spot... The cozy fireplace and warm staff were so welcoming. We had a couple Irish mules and ordered the wings. Everything was so good! Actually, we had to hold ourselves back from getting more wings- they were that good! Quaint little place up in wood country. Super nice atmosphere although really cold, neither of us could take our coats off. The didn't put on the heat only had one fireplace in the back trying to heat the whole place. Well you could definitely see that the chef / owner wasn't on duty this night. I got the mushroom cup of soup that was very bland. Tasted like pre cooked mushrooms in a watery broth unseasoned. Then I got a dinner salad that wasn't washed correctly as there was a lot of dirt in the leaves. Finally I ordered a ribeye medium rare, it was cooked ok but definitely a low grade of beef because it was super chewy and maybe I need new teeth but it was super hard to chew through all the sinew. My fiancé had the house special that night. Her soup too was very under seasoned. She got the salad with the sweet n sour dressing said it was ok but not how she had remembered. The special was anything but.... it was ravioli over chicken cutlet with an Alfredo sauce. We both have had enough Alfredo sauce over our years to know this was it as described. And the raviolis were very under cooked. The edges were very hard. The cutlets were ok but the sauce was supposed to be a rich butter sauce with mushrooms, the cooks idea of sauce was just butter and mushrooms, butter in itself does not make a sauce rather a component of one. Instead of taking a night off, maybe the chef should train his employee a little better. Just one persons opinion. The young lady we had as a server was nice but did not offer to do anything for her for her under cooked pasta. Instead didn't charge us the $5 for my beer. Plus we only got a half of a roll each size of bread. This place charges if you want extra. Kind of a skimpy thing to do. Especially since they are supposed to be making their own bread. Very cheap not to give people a full roll. We will give this place a second chance in the summer maybe the chef will be on duty. read more
