The service it's always excellent here, but this time was super excellent. Our hosts and our waiter were super attentive. Maybe because I had my beautiful daughters with me and they took all the great attention. It was 2 weeks after my oldest daughter birthday but somehow our male waiter said I heard it was somebody's birthday and I said yes. My daughter's birthday was not long ago. So they treat her with a belated birthday celebration. It was so nice from him. So, when we got there we ordered our drinks and right after we got the drinks we ordered our food. My grandbaby ordered the chicken tenders with fries from the kids menu. My youngest love their burger. My oldest got the filet Mignon with mushrooms and fresh salad. I got my usual the veggie sandwich with fries. The waiter brought us everything but the filet Mignon. It was taking a while to be cooked. So he gravely left offered my daughter complimentary soup to mitigate the wait. And she got it. So when we finished eating the food he arrived with a huge plate with chocolate cake and ice cream and a big birthday torch. It look so nice and delicious. My grand baby ate all his chicken and left some fries. He said he loved the chicken and they were satisfying. My youngest daughter like I mention before. She loves their burger. So she was satisfied too. I so loved the veggie sandwich on a wheat bread. I just love all the fresh veggies they put in there. It had mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. With some mayo. Also the fries were very crispy. I really love it. My oldest mention she loved the soup and the salad. She kind of ate a little bit of the filet Mignon and mushrooms. She took the left over home. She mention the meat was so juicy and well seasoned. It was so tender and tasty. The dessert they brought us for free and the soup. So my youngest, my grand baby and the three of them ate the dessert after we sang happy birthday. I thought it was a very nice gesture of him to do that for my daughter. Highly recommended. Great view but breakfast service ended at 10:20 on a Monday morning, before we even got a chance to sit down. No other customers there at the time, so it's not like they were slammed. We ended up going to Sequoia Cafe down the road instead, which was less expensive anyway. The location has real potential given the view, but cutting off breakfast that early seems like it's costing them business. A little more flexibility on hours would probably help. read more

Quality of food is below mediocre or terrible. The kids pizza was definitely at the cheap frozen food level. The salad was ok but tiny. The pasta didn't have much taste. I asked for a well-done burger and after a very long wait they brought an uncooked burger. I asked why it wasn't cooked and they brought a half cooked burger which I returned and finally cancelled my order. The waiter first refused to take responsibility for their mess up so I had to asked for the manager. The manager was impolite and finally with a grumpy and weird attitude took the item off the check. The service felt a bit lacking and indifferent throughout our visit, and the ambiance didn't really do much to make up for it. After a multi hour road trip, my friend and I Denise got here. It was the last intentional spot in our day. But there was something we had not considered, we were going to be going to a place that required us to be fresh and ready to receive the wonder of place by a lack and we only had the energy for an angry stop at a gas station. So this place I visited when I was tired and that kind of gunked up the experience. If I would have gone with more energy to fully open my eyes than this experience would have been wondrous. When I booked the reservation I did it because it was a place by a lake. I enjoy water front dining and I usually use an ocean for scenery and today I was in a place where I could use a large creek. And since I was not going with any specific expectations that lake hit me like a bucket of wow. I remember like seeing the mouth of the lake going down like actual rocks. Like I was seeing the waters that people raft on with commitment to the outdoors. It felt like I had traveled into a place where trees were purest, bird melodies were the only noise in town (besides the water running in the creek), and cabins belonged to those who called the mountains home. I was in a novel and for some reason I felt like it was written by Twain. And that is really what I can say about this place. That is mostly what I remember the beauty of the creek. I wanted to spend more time there, I could have walked it, they had like a lounge but I did not. But I do remember the forested view that went on, and the roaring, jagged leg being a central character other than that I have small things to say. I remember the salad being ok. Denise and I shared a dish, I can't remember why but we did not eat the whole thing. It was inherently bad. But this could have been an off night, or just not the dish of the place, and really you go here for the lake, and the food was great in some ways just not in this specific way. I went to this place a few weeks ago, and, if I had not make it clear I remember the experience of being with the lake. So go here for that experience and let the rest just fall into place. read more

Great place to stop after leaving Sequoia National Park. We sat on the outside patio and the views are gorgeous. We didn't have a reservation since we decided to stop in while driving by but they did ask and said we should make them next time. The service was great. Very quick and friendly. I had the eggplant parm with veggies and twice baked stuffed potato. The eggplant was really good. I was thrilled to see it wasn't breaded. It was cooked really well. Not mushy at all. I enjoyed the twice baked potato. I don't see them on menus very often. The escargot appetizer was ok. It lacked flavor. read more

Great place next to Sequoia National Park. It's right outside the gate of Sequoia National Park. The restaurant is so cool, it is next to a lake. There are even ducks down by the lake. We ordered Baked Brie $20. It was ok. The Baked Brie was good. Soft cheese with a crispy almond crust. The jam was really good too. But the bread was just plain bread. Nothing special. Sequoia Burger $23 was good. It didn't look at good, cuz the bun and lettuce wasn't put together, but it was good. Literal perfection - this tucked-away gem is a MUST VISIT if you're in the Sequoia area! The crab cakes were truly exceptional - delicious, clearly fresh, and great flavor. Best French dip I've ever had (and I've had many) - perfectly seasoned au jus, tender meat, PERFECT bread. The homemade chips were AMAZING - crispy, perfectly salted, clearly made with love. Even the house made fries were incredible. My husband's burger was also phenomenal - juicy, well-seasoned, quality beef you can taste. Basically, everything we tried was outstanding. Gateway delivered on every single dish. Service was top-notch as well. Everyone we encountered was friendly, on-the-ball, orders up in a timely manner. That was just a cherry on the top though because the food and views were the main attraction. Speaking of the views - wow!! The trees, the river, the bridge, the sunset, the patio overlooking the babbling brook, the scenery truly steals the show. Was this heaven? It really gave me a sense of serenity, joy, and peace just to take it all in. We're definitely going to stay at the lodge the next time we're in the area as well. The riverside setting at The Gateway is absolutely beautiful, and the view is the only reason this review even has a one-star. Unfortunately, the food was one of the most disappointing meals we've had. My husband ordered the pork chops with vegetables and a twice-baked potato, and I had the chicken piccata with a twice-baked potato. The potatoes were nearly inedible. The skins and the potato itself were so hard that we could barely cut them with a knife. It tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours before a potato topping was added right before serving. Even the topping was bland and had almost no flavor. My chicken piccata was equally disappointing. The chicken was tough, dry, and completely lacking in flavor. I only managed to eat about a quarter of it before giving up. The pork chops were average at best, but certainly not memorable. For the prices they charge, I expected a much higher level of quality. The food simply didn't come close to matching the cost or the beautiful setting. If you're visiting Three Rivers, I'd recommend enjoying the scenery somewhere else and spending your dining budget at places like Tony's Taverna instead. We left wishing we had. read more

I recently had the opportunity to visit this restaurant that promised a stunning view and delightful meal, yet my experience fell short of my expectations. Upon arrival, I eagerly anticipated being seated outside to enjoy the beautiful scenery. To my dismay, despite the outdoor area being completely vacant, we were informed that we couldn't sit there. This was both surprising and disheartening, especially since it seemed like the ideal spot to enjoy our meal. Once you step inside, the experience falls flat. It feels like a shabby indoor diner, dimly lit and cramped. When it came to the food, I found it rather mundane, especially given the high prices on the menu. The dishes tasted more like they were microwaved than freshly prepared. It was disappointing that both the service and the food failed to live up to the reputation of a place celebrated for its views and dining experience. I genuinely wanted to love this place, but I left feeling that the unwelcoming staff and subpar food overshadowed the beautiful surroundings. I'm not even sure where to begin. The restaurant itself is cute from the outside, but unfortunately the inside feels very run-down and poorly maintained. We ended up leaving shortly after being seated because the experience was so uncomfortable. The customer service from the two young ladies working was extremely rude and unwelcoming. In fact, the people seated behind us mentioned that interactions with the staff are usually hit or miss, which was disappointing to hear. Customer service plays a huge role in the relationship between a restaurant and its customers. A friendly attitude and welcoming environment can make all the difference. Was really looking forward to eating here as it has a great view of the River. Also, my daughter had eaten here for breakfast and enjoyed it. However, I was not so lucky. My husband and I ate here for dinner since we were staying right next door. (10% discount if you show them your room key.) . We weren't super hungry so we decided to split an app and entree. We ordered the fried calamari, which was good--no complaints other than the price $21. We also split the chicken piccata, which came with a baked potato and a side of green beans and carrots. Where to begin with this? For $35 you get about half a chicken breast. If you know chicken piccata, you know that it's supposed to be pounded thin, coated in flour and cooked so that the coating stays somewhat crunchy on the surface. This chicken was thicker and the coating was soggy and falling off. Taste-wise it was just ok. The baked potato was nothing special but it's hard to mess that up unless you undercook it. Potato was cooked properly and topped with some sour cream and butter. Nothing spectacular. The veggies were ok, but the portion was pretty small, so split between two people, kinda ridiculous. My husband commented that some of his green beans were undercooked. As far as the service, it was just ok. She did her job, but while she didn't have a total attitude, she wasn't thrilled to have this job either. The busboys were super nice and attentive though. Oh, and we sat out on the deck which had bird poop on the railing and a very persistent wasp flying around us the whole time, so for me, that took away from the river view. This my first time dinning here and let me tell you it was amazing. We arrived without a reservation and the staff were amazing. They let us know there was a large amount of people ahead of us but if we waited at the bar they would try and accommodate our large party of 8. They sure did! We had drinks at the very well stocked bar and in 15-20 minutes they had a table for us in the banquet room. We had the entire banquet room to ourselves which was very nice. The food was delicious and prices were fair. We asked about seating outside by the river and all our questions were answered. If you want a table by the river call ahead and make a reservation. But we will definitely be returning to this place. It is a little hidden treasure that is super close to Sequoia National Park. Pork chops were juicy and well flavored, ribeye was also juicy, tender, and flavorful. The sequoia burger was cooked perfectly at medium rare. The only thing was that the chicken Alfredo which was $39!!!! Was not good. The sauce lacked any flavor which is what makes the whole meal. The bow tie pasta wasn't my favorite either. as i walked in this place, my first impression was the cozy ambiance and scenic view of the river. however, my praise for this place just about stops there... many of the front employees looked frazzled and confused of what to do. the employee at the bar (who i can only assume to be their manager?) kept asking them questions to see if they had room for my group and neither of them knew how to answer. eventually we got seated by a different host; we had to wait for a bit but i didn't mind. i'm not sure if it was just bad timing on our part or a bigger, more consistent issue. either way, once we got sat outside the service improved, so i appreciate that for the food, it was just alright and honestly costly for how it tastes. i split the vegetable pizza with a friend and it was fine. others got the blt with soup and it looked like a really small portion. my friend said ants were on the bread that came with his escargot. he, for some reason, decided not to tell anyone including us, so i don't know any more about this. i would say skip if you are coming back from sequoia and are looking for somewhere to fill up. read more

The server offered to take it back but we kept them. But everything else was decent. The hash browns were fried well and nicely seasoned with salt and pepper. The bacon was crispy and they glistened with grease. The fruit was lukewarm and the pineapple tasted better than the cantaloupe. Even without the syrup, there was a sweet smell to the pancakes. Very thick and fluffy. *Two Eggs, Bacon and Potatoes: I got my eggs scrambled and they were light in texture and flavor. I definitely leaned on ketchup for some seasoning. *Muffins: all entrees came with a banana muffin. These were buttery and sweet. They were a bit dry but nothing the side of butter couldn't fix. However, we were seated and we waited for 20 minutes with no waiter but one of the clean up crew served us. Came back with our food which was under cooked and there was mold on the napkins and forks were dirty and we wanted refills but the other waiters ignored us. They never came by to check on us for the whole hour was weird. This place was kind of suspicious to begin with because there was no price to the entres so in the end we had to pay $300!! Which was ridiculous and to be ignored the entire time and to also pay for gratuity which is 20% on top of our food is insanely ridiculous. A small seven room lodge with a full-service restaurant, the Gateway Restaurant & Lodge in Three Rivers, California offers good dining and accommodations as close to Sequoia National Park as one could be without being in the park. We stopped by for a Sunday brunch and found the food and service to be good, with a unique backdrop situated near the rushing water of the Kaweah River. The lodge is located right on Sierra Drive, right after crossing the Pumpkin Hollow Bridge while heading towards the Southern entrance to the national park. Parking is tricky: we got lucky to find a spot but probably would have skipped it if all spots were occupied. We didn't have a reservation, but was able to be immediately seated at an indoor table. Next time, we would request for a table on the outdoor patio (just to experience something different), noting that it is quite loud from the rushing river waters below. In this area, there was no cell service so the provided free wifi was a great addition to our meal. Sunday morning is brunch time, and everybody is requested to order from the brunch menu: Adults $31, children under 12 $18. It comes with a Southern baked apple, beignets (on this day, it was filled with lemon curd), choice of 9 entrees, side of hash browns, and unlimited champagne (or orange mimosa). My wife and her mom both got the same thing: scrambled eggs with tiger shrimp wrapped in bacon. The shrimp was cooked well, and both ladies enjoyed the saltiness of the crispy bacon with the sweetness of the seafood. I chose a Grizzly Bear Omelet, a two egg mix that had a mix of various meats and diced vegetables spooned in the middle (i.e. it wasn't mixed with the egg batter, but instead added as a filling for the folded over product), with melted cheese covering the finished product. I asked for some salsa, and it was good with it. There are differences on how scrambled eggs are prepared, and I thought the version was average. Not being a fan of cooked fruit, I appreciated being able to sample the baked apple, which had hints of cinnamon and sugar. The beignet was good, obviously freshly made. Each plate also came with a few pieces of honeydew, along with some good crispy hash browns. Service was prompt and friendly throughout. It was busy, so couldn't stop by as often as some would want for an AllYouCanDrink brunch, but we were fine with it. All in all, a good experience with some unique views. read more

Yes, the view is unique and so all our repeat guests want to eat there. Being a healthy vegan, there are no options for me, other than a not-so-great salad and a Beyond burger. So, they lose a party of six over and over, because they don't have options for a single vegan in the party. I have asked many times. It's a shame that restaurant owners don't consider that they lose a lot more customers than just the occasional vegan. Please be a little creative and come up with some healthy plant-based options. read more

Was actually pretty excited to go and when my wife asked, do you want to sit inside or outside, I said no you have to sit outside. That's the whole point of this place is the Riverside view. Let me start by saying the service was great, I don't even know what to say about the food, because I couldn't get it out of my head that the preparation may be lazy and not following proper code. This is all deduced by how extremely dirty the outside is. The entire fence enclosure was layered with spiders and webs. We're not talking about new webs. I mean they look like they've been there for months. This is literally 6 inches away from me as I'm sitting at the table next to the railing. You start to look around and you see these star shaped chandeliers, and these have what looks like years worth of webs. Then you look at the windows, extremely dirty with webs, dirt, grime. And then it's just everywhere you look, underneath the station, the floors, etc. We should've got up and left, but I thought I was maybe being a a boujee out of towner. Honestly, I'm surprised somebody from the environmental health department has not shut them down. So anyways. Terrible dinner. Could not stop thinking about this as I was eating my red snapper and avoided my vegetables. Pretty disappointing. read more
